Focus shift is a nono for a macro lens. Back to the drawing board.
It's a serious flaw, for sure.
Especially when you're Ihotographing moving insects. Canon should bring back in camera focus adjustment.

Hi Dustin. Always love your reviews. When you say the workaround for the focus shift is to use the lens in manual focus I presume you mean to focus by eye? I have the Canon R body and when using manual focus I use the little pointers etc. in the viewfinder that show when the shot is in focus. Will the focus shift make this method unreliable and therefore I will need to focus by eye?
Hi Greg, yes, whatever method you use to visually confirm focus will be fine. I used manual focus for most of my macro shots shown in the review and gallery, and used the combination of the focus guide (which I think you are describing) along with a focus overlay. I got excellent results that way.
I'm Waiting for the comparison between this lens and the Nikon Z 105 MC f2.8 S lens especially on the Image Quality side and the advantage Nikon has with the Z mount
I don't review Nikon, so someone else will have to do that!
I finally bought a used one. I have tried hard to find this shift issue, I could not... like many others at DPReview too. So, I don’t get what happened with this « issue » 🧐.

Don't wanna sound greedy, but is there any chance you could get your hands on the new/upcoming Laowa 85mm f/5.6 2x Ultra Macro APO?
Would love to hear your opinion on that little (252g !!!) thing. Seems very promising option if you are looking to experiment with 2x magnification

The focus shift issue, even if only at f5.6 and f8, is going to be an issue for me as I have always used AF on the EF version of this lens at macro distances because it worked well. I would not have expected Canon to design a lens that had unreliable AF at any f-stop. It seems they are attempting to justify this by claiming that all macro photographers will use MF at macro distance. Well, not all of us do that. I have owned the EF version since 2013 and I could effectively get AF on a living, moving bug at near 1:1 distance with that lens. While I often use f11, there are situations where using a larger aperture is better than using a smaller one. Also, what happens with the focus bracketing feature of the R5/6 that requires a lens with AF? This is certainly a situation where you may want to be at f5.6 as the lens may be sharper there than at f11. Has anyone tested this? I would hope that there is no actual focusing going on then and that the camera is just using the motors of the lens to adjust the plane of focus. I think reviewers should be harder on Canon for allowing this issue to exist and not informing potential buyers about this issue before purchase of a much more expensive lens. Just a simple statement is all that would have been required of them rather than letting us find out about it long after a purchase.
It is definitely a disappointing turn of events...and I suspect triggered by the SA control function.

@@creativegreatsvisuals Mostly because this is a new feature that causes a shift in focus, creating an issue that Canon didn't have on previous macro lenses.

I’m curious to see what you think of this lens compared to the Sony 90mm G OSS. I have a metabones adapter for my Sony camera and have been experimenting with Canon glass on it
I see fairly similar levels of performance, though the Canon has higher magnification. The Sony doesn't have the focus shift issue, however
I have used both lens EF and RF. To be honest, I only use AF in the field with insects and flowers. EF is still the best lens in my opinion. The focus shift of the RF is unacceptable for a lens priced so high. Unless there is a firmware to correct this focus shift I will sell this lens and keep using the EF lens. Do you think that Canon will issue a firmware to correct the focus shift? Thank you and I really appreciate your reviews.
I honestly don’t know if focus shift is something that can be fixed via firmware. The only way I could see it being fixed is if the lens focussed with the aperture stopped down rather than wide open
does this rf100 2.8 give good video macro shots in auto focus ? does it focus shift in video using auto focus ? "what is focus shift mean?"
focus shift means that focus changes when the aperture is stopped down.
had this lens for a couple of days. could not deal with the auto focus any more so traded it in for a different lens. f2.8 is supposed to be decent to good at low light, yet it is bad at focusing at low light so......

Just bought the Laowa 90mm 2.8 for RF, i like that one... a lot cheaper! But damn, at 2:1 macro your focus plane is sooo small.

Hmm, not sure about the focus shift issue. A lot of people here are moaning about it, but I have this lens, and it is the best lens in my kit for the price. It is as sharp as the RF 50mm F 1.2. It is a great focal length for portrait, product photography, macro, astro etc. Did I just really get lucky and got a perfect copy of it? It's my favorite lens! I also have the Laowa 100mm F2.8 2x macro, and that lens is no where near as sharp and the contrast and colors are just "meh".
I did really like the lens optically, but I’ve definitely had a lot of people who have said they saw the same problem with the focus shift.
What a great video could be sony 90 vs sigma 105 vs canon 100 vs nikon 105...

Don´t take my comment as a fan: Canon is becoming the big lier in the market. Is abussing on prices and not getting same quality as competition. There´s almost no information around about actual Canon´s crisis and is the purpose of over priced system. Thank you so much Dustin for your time and informative videos, they are very useful as I´m a seller in L. America and we are not getting any news/restock from Canon since april.
In Inda this lens is going for close to 1800$. The L lens is half the price but goes for more than the sony 90mm. Their prices are haywire as if they donot want to compete. Perhaps just aim at an elite niche. The Nikon and the new Sigma are priced at half the price.
I've been a little underwhelmed by what Canon is doing recently.
This focus shift problem could be easily mitigated if Canon brought back the im camera lens correction. I had a bad focus shift problem on a RF 50 f1.2 that I had to return to Adorama. Canon wanted it back to have it repaired but the lens is onmy 1 week old. I wouldn't want a brand new lens that Canon will butcher.
I'm not sure that mirrorless focus would work the same way with that. The problem, too, is that then you would have focus shift issues at F2.8.
