  • IOD See what the IOD Sisters snagged in a recent thrift haul and how they did a home accessories makeover - grandmillennial style!
Sally and Josie explain what the "grandmillennial" decor style is (hint: think 'granny chic'), learn how to decorate in the grandmillennial style, and how to pick thrift store home furnishing that jam with this emerging interior design trend in 2021.
After going through the thrift haul, the IOD Sisters paint a lamp base and repurpose thrift store wall art to transform them into grandmillennial decor style.

Sherry at The Canterbury Cottage channel just did a long video on Grand Millennialism with tons of ideas and the comments were mostly full of enthusiasm and gratitude for this style. So many people already have lots of collections and a love for traditional and haven't been represented for a long time while we've watched BoHo and Farmhouse rule the home decor space, especially on UA-cam. We're being given permission to celebrate the style that we already love and find comfortable and nurturing. Yay to Grand Millennial!

@@bluecottonbykammy7199 we had to mix the paint to get exactly the color we wanted. Because our Stockists carry many different brands, and as a courtesy to them, we don’t ever mention paint brands that we use. I will say that any mineral based or chalk type paint will work beautifully for this. I can tell you that the gold paint is called liquid leaf and can be found at any craft store. Soemtimes our Stockists have that as well. There are several brands for that and we’ve never tried one we don’t like!

It's also called Granny Chic. The grand stands for grandmother (or grandparents). So, the name is a combination of the two age groups.

I am a Baby Boomer....my mom and grandparents lived in a country farmhouse and the decor looked nothing like what has been coined farmhouse today, lifeless, colorless and boring. There was always something of interest to see at my grandparents' house. I used to snoop in my grandmother's old Singer pedal sewing machine cabinet drawers and would find all kinds of treasures....wooden spools, buttons, thimbles...etc. This Grandmillenial is just renaming what our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents lived with (which was mostly functional). This is nothing new. For years and years, our mom's, grandma's and great grandparent's things were tossed aside....antique stores, thrift stores, etc, couldn't give away the old family china and antiques. I inherited many of these type of things and have held on to them and would never part with them.

Grandmillennial Style comes from decor used/collected by older generations such as older parents, grandparents, great grandparents. Lots of vintage glass, pottery, heavy fabrics, tapestry & lace, wooden furniture unpainted, brass & copper & pewter, printed classic wallpaper, heavy damask curtains & silky breezy sheers, doilies, tablecloths/runners, rugs/carpets from India/Asia, endless antiques, classic sculptures & nicely framed art/photo landscapes/portraits, shelves of nicely bound books, leather sofas/chairs/buttoned/wingbacks, all things once considered tasteful & refined.

I thought the shade looked pretty amazing with just the stamped look. I would have painted the top and bottom trim with the gold, and then spritzed the stamped shade with the gold or watered down gold. I would be cottagey with flare. Sometimes simple lines of popped color and a little spritz (tiny paint splatter look) of that same color is all you need to tie something together. Maybe even using the same green instead of gold on the shade? I am all about adding a minimal second color to the shade to set it off.

I have three Chinese boxes of various shapes and sizes similar to the one at 4:02. One has a green patina. I got them at Ross back in the days when you could find really nice things there now and then. I hold onto that stuff for dear life because I still love them and they were cheap as hell. If I showed you the throw pillows I got there you wouldn’t believe me. My style is sort of an artsy/eclectic/things Grandma left me, so in my mind, my decor never goes out big style. It doesn’t hurt that I live in a 1930s house. Harmonious decor and architecture makes all the difference. 😁

Yes ! It can hardly be mentioned too often, that things with quality workmanship and materials and classy style, will never be out of style, even if not among the top trends, height of popularity, or your particular favorite. So, they are never a bad buy/investment ( unless you should be spending that $ elsewhere - be aware folks, that for many , many reasons, we may be facing major food shortages soon ) .
So, save those functional pieces with "good bones" - maybe paint or refinish a few ( that aren't too valuable kept as is ) - and just change out the softer furnishings, when you want a fresh style :) .

Use the scrap paper to test your wash. A sponge works well for applying it or use a recycled spray bottle to spray the color on.
I’ve painted lampshades before. It’s really hard to get a solid color without blotchiness. I stamped mine too, it’s easier to use the stamps individually. There’s less chance of smearing and easier to apply pressure consistently. You sisters are always fun to watch!

Grand millenial is about pattern and color... if you take a lovely granny chic piece and paint them white, they aren't grand millenial becomes French or country. However the real French Provential is also more colorful than decorators seem to want it to be.

I myself detest boring one color shades. I would have loved to see a stamped shade (the initial idea) without being watered down I either green or dark pink (whatever was the original color). I think the stamp would look very pretty. The test of the lamp and the picture came out great and was fun to watch....though I was a bit concerned when Sally was hammering on that picture with the glass inside. Great job ladies. Thank you.

I love the lamp. The shade I'd left it as it was & use a ribbon of gold around the top & bottom for a more sophisticated look. Just me throwing my 2 cents in. 🙃

Bring gold into the shade. Plain shade with gold trim. No stamping as there is enough pattern in the base.💚

Think you're right! The shade was an experiment gone a bit (or a lot!) wrong. Thanks for the suggestion. ❤️

Sptitz the shade with the same green, leave some white background. stamp with soft rose paint, spritz lightly, let dry, then, stamp with gold and black writing.

What about gluing old patterns on to the shade with a decoupage application. Or bits of torn patterns on to the one you already did.

The lampshade shape isn't working. I'd want to try a shade in a rectangular boxy shape, esp. since the lamp base is kind of flattened, if that makes sense.

The stamps are NEVER in stock so it's kind of hard to use them and it's very frustrating

Sorry to hear you're frustrated. As with many manufacturers, COVID greatly disrupted our supply chain but things have eased up recently. If you email customerservice@ironorchiddesigns.com and let them know what you're looking for and where you're located, they will be happy to help you. Thanks!

Several items on your table are genuine Grandmillennial Style as they are...once painted white or some other nontraditional color it becomes something else, shabby chic or farmhouse or bohemian/hippy. Grandmillennial is visiting the past not modern-day makeovers. ...But what do I know. I'm sure your items will be lovely.

I layer with my comments but I love the picture and frame, the lamp is very pretty, but the shade i think needs some of the same color as the rose, very pale and then some gold put in some where.?

  • @TheRepublicOfJohn
    @TheRepublicOfJohn 3 роки тому

Grandmillenial is basically if you took the interior of the Ray and Charles Eames House and put it in a house built in a more traditional architectural style. Those 1950s MCM designers were eclectic as heck and didn't shy away from decor, colors, and textiles from the 20s-50s.

I think I would have tea dyed over the pink on the lampshade, then it would have aged it a bit.

They call it grand millennial cuz its millennials who are appreciating what their grandma had. We aren't claiming we made it up. Its basically a refresh on the traditional style.
