- #ilovervlife #hayhouse #macontours We had the very fortunate opportunity the visit the Hay House located in Macon, GA. We were provided a private tour and were able to visit 7 floors of this amazing house. The Jonston-Felton-Hay House was constructed between 1855 and 1859 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1974. This 18,000 square foot mansion was built in the Italian Renaissance Revival style and had many amenities that were very unique for the mid-1800's including hot and cold running water, central heat, gas lighting, central heat, in-house kitchen and a state of the art ventilation system.
Our tour started in the basement and proceeded throughout this amazing structure culminating at the very top with a walk around the 7th floor widow's walk offering amazing views of downtown Macon.
This video is just a highlight of our tour and I hope you have the opportunity to visit Macon and see the amazing home. For more information about the Hay House visit www.hayhousema....

My Goodness, what a beautiful house....I esp. loved those huge front doors.....I will need to take this tour for myself, someday....as I have a mother-in-law and sister-in-law, living in Warner Robbins.... Thank you, so much....👏👏 Since Macon did sustain some damage during the Civil War, it's wonderful that the (Hay) house escaped that fate... I know there are houses there that did suffer some damage...
Thanks Joanie. It’s something. So much more I couldn’t fit in the video. You’ll love the tour. If you have a minute, go to our website. I have a few pictures that shows a little extra detail. See our gallery at ilovervlife.com/gallery/
@@iLoveRVlife I'm sure, it's such a grand house...I live in Huntsville, AL and there are quite a few pre Civil War homes here, too.... I always enjoy your tour videos, especially..
Thank you for this video. I am planning to go visit this magnificent place on Wednesday,
Great to hear you enjoyed the video. Have fun.
What a fun little tour. WOW! What a beautiful house. The intricate detail of this place is amazing! Love all the wood work. The staircase and window is so pretty. Thanks for bringing us along. Going to add to my RV bucket list.

You bet!
this video was so cool thanks for sharing putting it on our list of things to do
You bet! A very cool tour in the heart of town. Great destination to see and spend the day seeing the site.
It's a beautiful place. I'm from Macon also and in Elementary School we went on many tours of the Hay House. I wish they would've showed the grand staircase af and the elevator.
It’s quite the place. It’s really something during Christmas.
thanks for graciously taking your precious time to share this delightful peace of history. It has piqued my curiosity. since you haved two different rv roofs , you said in an earlier video that pc was easier and cooler and easier to clean than the rubber roof. you still feel that way after years of using them thanks have a safe, healthy, anf joyful journey ahead
Hi Phillip. Thanks much. This was a fun tour and happy to share. We love the PVC roof. Don’t think I would ever want to return to the older style rubber roof. There’s no chalking, super easy to clean with a little soap and water and a soft car brush. The reflective quality makes a huge difference in the summer, especially when we have little tree cover. They AC units don’t have to work as hard to keep the 5th wheel cool. We’ve had the roof 4 years now. Since we are constantly on the road, it is never under a cover. If we walked on top, it looks as good as the day we picked it up. No cracks, no weird stains. So glad we took the advice of the installation facility. Safe travels. Jerry...
thanks for first hand info. how long and cost for them to redo your roof you have it done in macon@@iLoveRVlife
I had the roof installed at Mid State RV in Byron, GA. Very large dealer with an excellent maintenance shop plus a full body shop for RVs. It’s a bit of a task to replace. The roof has to be pealed off, then a new layer of luan glued to cover the splinters. Then glue the new roof. Took 5 days. They were true to word. Dropped off on Monday morning, picked up Friday afternoon. It wasn’t inexpensive. Sitting down? $7,200. I had little choice though. Had a 6 foot rip and the aluminum edge had been crushed. I can’t say enough good things about Mid State. They installed my slide toppers and also do my 10,000 mile wheel repacks. Good folks.
thanks very helpful info@@iLoveRVlife
Very nice video of a stunning antebellum mansion. You were very fortunate to have visited the cupola because it's usually off limits to visitors (the spiral staircase is narrow, steep and treacherous). Decades ago my girlfriend was a docent at the Hay House when we were studying at Mercer and she always told me spooky stories about Mary Ellen Johnston, the resident ghost. We would also visit Mary Ellen's grave at the Johnston-Bond crypt down on the river at Rose Hill Cemetery. Did you happen to experience any parts of the mansion that felt ice cold? Did you capture anything unusual on your video? Thanks again for your tour of my favorite house located in one of the most beautiful cities in America.
Thanks for the very kind comment. The Hay House is a rare piece of history with great period architecture, and sets the stage for the unique parts of downtown Macon. We were fortunate to get the extended tour and saw most of the house with the exception of the cellar. We didn’t experience any apparitions, but that would have been a cool UA-cam addition.
That house is just amazing the oppulance for that era is spectacular. I notice a lot of Williams we have a lot of them in Northern Ireland in fact my husband is William Loney. Macon is beautiful Thankyou for this great video.
Thanks Valerie. So fortunate the house survived after so long. Quite a spectacular place.
I Love RV Life It really is I was reading up on the first owner William Butler Johnston there was only 2 out of his 6 children survived.
So sad, but typical for that era. He was an interesting fellow. Was a technology investor for that time and made his money from railroads and ice boxes. Was able to retain much of his wealth after the Civil War with investments held in the North US and in Europe. Something else. He and his wife honeymooned in Europe for 3 years. Wow! This is where they purchased most of the furnishings and art for the home. The 3rd owner didn’t care for the extensive art collection and auctioned off most and converted the art gallery into a ballroom. For the mid 1800’s, the home had an indoor kitchen and plumbing with flush toilets. Very rare for the 1850’s and affordable for just a few. I’ll add some pictures to our website this week. The plaster work, gold gilding and woodwork are stunning.
I Love RV Life He was obviously a very shrewd business man when he could retire at 40. All so interesting he was very lucky to have survived the civil war with his house and money fairly intact. X
Valerie, go to our website gallery at ilovervlife.com/gallery/ I've added a few shots from the house to show some of the more interesting elements that were difficult to show in the video. Jerry...

We toured a couple houses in Macon, but not that one. Been to a couple of Rally's in Perry, plus one trip I did family research across Central Georgia.
Hope you have the chance to come back. Really interesting place.
