    I just used silk wraps to reinforce my short nails while they are growing out. The key is to to make sure the piece of silk fits the nail. If there is even the tiniest bit of silk sticking up, the whole thing will lift. I buff them gently smooth and put a layer of Orly GelFx clear builder gel, cure it, and then apply gel polish over it. I am using Shellac Luxe gel polish which literally soaks off in 5 minutes and does not disturb the silk wrap or glue underneath.

    I switched to silk wrap about three years ago, and I would never go back to anything else. It's definitely not for you if you love long nails though. I like to keep my nails pretty short but well groomed. And it works perfectly for my taste and need. Give it a try.

The brands aren’t many but look up Lizy G on UA-cam as well brands I came across and bought are: backscratchers, Cuccio, Sheba Nails, ASP (all season professionals), & IBD has nail resin only as well check out Princess Nails if in UK. Of course they have the loose fiberglass for sale on Amazon but I don’t feel comfortable doing my nails like that I prefer the fiberglass made specifically for nails and made or comes from US which I know Sheba nails & Backscratchers are both small companies inside the US and really nice people and great products

    I just used the silk this week, and I can answer your question about who/what/why it's best for: I've been on chemotherapy for about 2 years, and my nails have deep groves that make it harder for things to adhere. Even worse, my nails are very thin, so it's recommended that I NOT wear press-on or acrylic nails. BUT I just used the silk this week, and it filled in all the ridges and lines!!!!!!! It made my rough nails smooth when I was done filing!! I have healthy, regular nails again that look exactly like my healthy natural nails from before cancer!! Then I applied the gel nails, and viola! Even more beautiful nails that don't fall off!! I coulda stopped with just the silk, but I wanted strength and shine too. I'm uploading the video now... I've been so emotional for the past 2 days since I did it. I feel pretty again!

    I use fiberglass or silk over tips (active length) I use a resin or brush-on gel that cures with an activator spray. I only use the wrap on long natural nails. Fiberglass is a great alternative to acrylic and if your nail breaks it's NOT painful or damages natural nails.

    Aah.... that's not how it is done. Here is the fast and easy way:
    1) measure a piece that is the width of your nail. The silk should be 5 to 10mm long. If you want to build a longer nail, you need to support it with a form underneath.
    2) apply base gel. Do not cure.
    3) put silk in the middle of the nail. Use a tooth pick to pull it towards the free edge and pull until it is extended to your desired length.
    4) gently pat/brush gel over silk and stess area.
    5) cure. Clean. Buff everything so there are no harsh edges.
    6) apply gel and build apex.
    7) buff. Done. Follow with desired color + top coat

    • @shicadelic
      @shicadelic 5 років тому +7

      Oh and in step 5 you also form the cured silk tip

    • @marielanders1218
      @marielanders1218 4 роки тому +16

      If you already have to use a form it doesn't make sense to use the silk wrap for an extension. You can just make the extension with the form and soft gel, hard gel, acrylic, Polygel, etc. Just my thoughts.

    Now I’ll age myself here. But many years ago silk and acrylic were the only products to build an extension, besides plastic tips and press-ons. There was no gel yet. This was also the go to way to repair a broken nail too. But again, not with gel.
    For me I’d affix the silk with glue and then build the nail strength with a dip method of acrylic overlay, but not with a base products, but thin layers of glue in between layers of powder, hardened each time with monomer, accelerator. Until it was hard enough to file, shape and buff. That was my preferred method for building out an extension if I had to (rarely did because it is difficult and my nails were thick and strong enough on their own) and also for repairing a broken nail. This really allows you to control the thickness.

I tried dip but once I use the activator I get an irritation on my skin so not worth risking becoming allergic and I finally came across fiberglass and glad I did because now I can finally have long nails again yay. Sure it’s not the same as my beloved acrylic but sooooo much better option than nothing. I just have to use regular polish and find it’s getting easier to do application the more I practice. There are so little amount of videos on UA-cam wish there were more. Do you think I could do an inlay with this? Or is it just giving you strength & length? Is there other things I could add to make them pretty? Thank you I appreciate all of your videos and time it takes you. Your helping thousands of people and know I am very appreciative

  • @JulietMHorner
    @JulietMHorner 5 років тому +3

    Anastasia,
    I am allergic to traditional L&P, which I discovered while in nail school. I have two nails that hard gel sculpts just refuse to stay adhered to. The sculpts/overlays peel up within days and I end up resculpting/overlaying several times within a normal two week period. I have had better luck on these particular nails with Gelish Polygel, but then I always feel like they look different from the rest of my nails.
    With all of that said, I recently broke off about half of my mid-length natural nail on two nails. I did not want to have to sculpt out length to match the others, so I decided to try using a full piece silk wrap with resin & activator. I then overlayed my 'acygel method'. This is where I put a semi-thin layer of base gel polish (KUPA is my preference as well 😉) and sprinkle a finely milled FLEXIBLE acrylic powder (by IBD) over it until saturated and then cure. Depending on how long I make the nail, I can add a second layer to create an apex. I also use the c-curve sticks while curing to help create that shape. I then file the surface to remove the gritty texture and polish as usual. So far, these nails have the same strength as a hard gel/Polygel sculpt and it has been almost a month with one polish change out.
    I have had to become proficient at acrylic (not as much), hard gels, silkwraps, and acygels because my clients' needs are all different. What works on one doesn't necessarily work on the other. It can be a bit like playing detective with new clients, but they appreciate the time I take to tailor fit their service to them.

    Hi! Love your videos! I have a nail question!
    I couldn't get into my regular person, so I went to a salon I'd never been to (famous last words LOL) and had a mani and a clear gel top coat. Well, it's been 2 days now and I have what look like little bruises on the sidewalls of half my nails! The polish lifted too, and my nails are very thin! I knew she'd manhandled me a bit, but this is awful!
    I want to do them myself as I do in between appointments (normally have UV gel overlays) but it hurts and my natural nail is over filed as it is!
    How long will this take to feel better? Should I leave them alone and natural, or should I throw on a couple of coats of gel or just a uv clear coat? Help!

      The silk wrap is actually made to strengthen nails so this would be a good method for u but instead get resin & accelerator

    I'm intrigued, I covered silk and fibreglass in my training but was told to not put gel or gel polish on it. Can you advise whether this is OK to do? I'd only really use them as wraps, not extensions really. Maybe it's because of the spray activator used? Xx

    I think you should have started building on the silk first then worked your way on up the cuticle.

    My manicurist used the silk wrap over the tips and I really liked them because it made them look so natural. Your aggravation kinda made me giggle…..hehe!

    This seems pretty easy. Can you use this over the whole nail? Would it help thin nails get strong?

    • @Nailcou
      @Nailcou  5 років тому +2

      You can, but it won't be comfortable working close to the cuticle
