Hi everyone! I have no idea why the UA-cam algorithm decided to pick this video up all of a sudden, but that you guys for all the support! I’m glad you’re enjoying the video! I have gotten a lot of comments about the ao oni movie, so I just wanted to say that I am aware of it and it is on my list of things to possibly make a video on! ALSO! I know that square oni is actually called fuwatti. I just thought it was a funny little nickname 😩
OKAY SO WHY AO IS PURPLE AND NOT BLUE IS FUNNY AS HECC. It's because "ao" is like, a whole range of colors. Ao can even be _green_ if the green is on something natural, like sea green or grassy or forest green. "Ao" is only blue in the vaguest sense, all the way from minty green to deep indigo. But not navy blue, navy blue is in the realm of "kuro", black. (I feel like I've gone mad sometimes arguing over a "kuro" colored character being described as black when he's CLEARLY DARK BLUE, but no, turns out that they just think two colors are one.).
@@phoenixprince1806 old comment but y not give the answer??? midori is more often used for what we in english strictly categorize as green, especially in modern contexts, tho both can be used for natural greens depending on context
Fun fact, the bathroom death is based on the game. When you check the bathroom the oni is in it but the door is locked, fiddle with it enough times and you can get in and die, blood splatter and all
I'm quite sure that they knew what they were doing, just making a comedy shorts series without a proper adaptation of the story beforehand. It might just be a fun love letter for the players. An anime adaptation of Ib would sound like it takes an enormous amount of effort and budget if the supposed adaptation were to really try to make the art *pop.* I mean, paintings and art are major themes in the game, so if they half-ass on the art direction, I'd be more than disappointed.
The hypothetical Ib team would have to have the same team that did Mo No No Ke (not Princess Mononoke, but the TV series about the Medicine Seller that started off as one of the three tales in Ayakashi: Samurai Ghost Stories).
@@neoqwerty I didn't have any anime in mind while I typed the comment, but Mononoke's art style is just about exactly what I'm looking for. Also, thanks for the recommendation. It's so damn gorgeous and unique in many ways. …and might I mention it's terrifying?
In this age of UA-cam where everyone always talks and behaves with overwhelming confidence and pride like they hold every answer to life, your down to Earth and minimalist way of presenting yourself are extremely refreshing. You give me the vibes of a nice early 2010s youtuber when things were simpler. This video was really entertaining. Keep up the good work!
9:10 - This is actually a reference to an Easter Egg in the game where you see an Ao Oni walking past the bathroom door. You Can spam the bathroom door to brute force your way in. You die in the same way.
You would be correct about the time loop thing! While in the anime, it's likely just a product of the series being episodic and comedic, but in the manga, and sort of the live action movies, there is a time loop. The game, Ao Oni, itself exists in the universe of Ao Oni within the movies and ESPECIALLY the manga, as the events of the game happen in real life as the game is played, when the characters die, it starts over, though by what I remember it's more complicated than that in the manga. I wish I could explain it more thoroughly and accurately, but it's been a few years since I read the manga, the plot(s) sort of confused me, and I no longer have access to the manga for reasons, though the movies, while pretty different, are still available on UA-cam, I think. There are 3 movies, but the last one is animated, and I haven't watched it, but by what I've seen, it looks to have it's own original story.
Also, YES, I 100% believe that if a straight on horror Ao Oni anime adaptation was created, it could of done well, I do wish it had of happened, not that I hate what we got. Ao Oni seems to still be at least vaguely popular in Japan, so maybe it will happen one day.
I like how they improved the character's designs in the anime. Hiroshi's scarf is cool, Takeshi looks like a scared delinquent, Mika looks more peppy, and Takuro looks like the cool dude.
I’ve only just now heard about this game but I can already think of some good plot that could be put into a serious show like u mentioned. That would have actually made it feel like a good horror show. Think they would need to redesign the ao oni though so it would actually look scary if they wanted to do a horror anime😭
As mentioned, I think it makes sense for its chibi comedy style considering there is not toooo much horror/story to valjdate a full anime, you would need to remove puzzles and some gameplay sections to make it not seem bloated. There is also the fact that the Ao Oni movies are really what you seem to look for so having both the animes and the movies wouldn't make sense business wise. Even the movies seems a little stretched out with padding in some regards so a full anime just didn't seem likely to be good to me
Im gonna be honest, Ao Oni was the first and the only time the "uncanny valley" really worked on me, when i was a kid i couldnt even watch the videos, i would just stare at the thumbnails
yeah this anime was weird lol; i remember being excited when i first heard about it as a teen cause "omg horror game i played is getting an anime!" but being so disappointef after the first episode i didnt finish it as for if it could work as a serious anime, i dont know! they made an 3d anime movie a few years back, and that was. Weird in a different way. i would like them see them try, but who knows if there'll be anymore. oh, and i almost wonder if these shorts were like, an "advertisement"/tie in of sorts for the light novels, since i think the designs in the show were the same as the books.
From what I understand in some cultures they don't always consider secondary colors (purple, green, orange) their own colors, like green is considered a shade of blue until it becomes a shade of yellow, so maybe it's blue because they consider purple blue.
in english, "red" used to include orange, and it still usually separates purple into "indigo" and "violet" kinda funny how humans create their own independent categories across cultures.
its sad how (atleast based on the novel informations) the square oni is actually a dead kitten, thats why when he appears there's also a cat running away. this kinda confirms the theory that everyone/everything that dies inside the mansion becomes a Oni no matter how they died
I'm a game dev, so I will say that the music was a factor to why this game was scary, but I feel like the buildup to the scares were also good. The game was generally quiet, had tiny bits of story and dialogue to get the player a little nervous, and sometimes the scare would be a fake out before it was the actual monster. I think it got old halfway through the game, which made it less scary, but them adding in a new monster type helped spice that up a bit. (And omg, I cant tell you how good of a design decision it was to show the monster IN YOUR MENU. 👏 Lol glad you brought that one up.) For a short, simple game, I think they did a bunch of things to make it scary and it worked really well, especially for us youngins at the time haha
I'm not sure if the title is related to this, but there was a time in Japan when every cool color was referred to as 'ao,' specifically, and warm colors were called 'aka.' It wasn't until later that distinct names were given to these colors. Interestingly, some items like traffic lights continue to use these references to this day.
The only anime adaptation of an rpg maker game I love is Angels of Death. I heard that people think it's bad, but I think it's pretty good. I also love the OST and the OP & ED. I hope there will be an adaptation of the character's backstory, just like the Angels of Death Episode.Eddie and maybe the other characters. Maybe like an OVA.
I'm pretty sure I watch this on crunchy roll but after the last episode, an anime movie of Ao Oni started playing and it was like an actual serious kind of retelling of the game in some weird way. I don't remember much but I know mostly that there was a flower it was the plot point of the whole thing.
I think youre right about the music. I was playing a game while talking to a friend (i was also midway through ao oni at the time) and he started playing the music and i immediately went into fight or flight
I loved this anime for how unhinged it was. It was much better than the animated movie for sure. One thing I will say is that Japanese loves predictable comedy. Some of the most popular Japanese comedy shows are formulaic that uses the same gag over and over again. (Yoshiki to shinkigeki and the Drifters sketches are the classic examples of this) The audience expect it coming and still laughs. I think it’s comforting to them.
I'm so happy to see many ppl talkin about this game, I remember I played it so much I could speedrun it and finish it in around 20 minutes. 10:43 Am I hallucinating or does it look like Mika's shirt suddenly dissapeared and she's topless save for the collar, a weird white band, and the ribbon? Like, that's the exact same color on her skin and where the top part of her shirt should be, I just checked.
I don't really know the timeline of when they were released but I do know there were novels, manga, and Live-Action films that also came out before or around the time as the anime so maybe that's why they never made a "serious" anime series. Between all the other media and the original game it seemed like one of those "either you've seen it before or you know it through social osmosis" kind of deals. It's kind of wild just how popular Ao Oni is/was in Japan. if I had to pick any RPG Maker game to get an Anime, it'd be Ib. I would love to see that game realized in an animated series.... or if we're picking anything and not just horror then Space Funeral would be an absolute trip.
didnt know people disliked these anime shorts. i get people wanting a full-length horror adaptation but theyre fine as silly jokes for existing fans. the anime definitely cares about the source material too with all of the game references.
I don't know if anyone else said this, but if you're looking for a more serious and intriguing interpretation of Ao Oni, there's a 5-volume light novel and it's quite interesting. I strongly recommend it to you.

I don't know if anyone else said this, but if you're looking for a more serious and intriguing interpretation of Ao Oni, there's a 5-volume light novel and it's quite interesting. I strongly recommend it to you.
