Looking forward to testing out my new BMX25 on a nine day canoe trip next week. I chose this model for two reasons. One it's potential for improvement and two it's colour. Olive green matches the rest of my low vis camping gear. Can't stand the "yard sale" look of unnaturally coloured plastic kit. The large silicone rubber closures appeared to offer good compression if a gasket is added, which was the first thing I did. It's now 100% air and watertight, which should improve its performance drastically. Next I made a five sided Reflectix shroud to cover everything but the carry handle as well as a Reflectix external bottom doubler and internal draft blanket. Took me about a half an hour. Lastly I installed rubber feet to reduce heat absorption through conduction with the ground. In addition, I have a SAIL brand, high end soft cooler that fits snuggly into the BMX25 interior with which to eke out an extra day of chill by doubling the already ample insulation once ice and provisions are depleted.
I bought the IMX 24qt for a recent trip and it worked like your test showed. It's so rugged that I believe I could use it as a jack stand. in a pinch that is. However, the drain plug leaked right off when it got water. Didn't see it right away so my seat got real wet. The plug, or actually cap, was also tight. I stopped by Lowes, picked up a rubber washer, and cut it to fit. Problem solved. It is made in in China and would definitely pay more if made in America.
Sorry to hear that Steve! It looks like you can purchase replacement drain plugs from Igloo if needed, but the rubber washer is a great, quick solution!
Thanks for the great video, I have several coolers ranging from budget to expensive but overall my go to is my Igloo BMX 25 quart that I paid about $60 for about 2 years ago.
Had you immersed a thermometer into the different water/ice mixtures you would find they were all the same temperature. Until the ice is finally gone all the ice/water mixtures are the same temperature. Your different Infrared thermometer measurements are likely due to reflective properties of surfaces you pointed at.
I have two of the IMX coolers and they are great. The only problem with the IMX is it is near impossible to get a replacement rubber latch. Can't find one anywhere on the internet and Igloo in Katy Tx never has them in stock and it will take months to get one. Igloo is a HUGE disappointment when it comes to parts for the IMX. I am keeping that in mind for our next cooler.
It is important that there is not one complete product but several with each lacking in something so that you buy, remain disappointed, buy the next one and so on. Of course, the companies call this an opportunity for every taste, etc.
Comparing larger coolers full of air to smaller ones full of ice is a bad experiment tbh. Would’ve been better to see each cooler full since that’s how one properly packs a cooler
They must not add the gasket to keep cost as low as possible? I dont know any other reason why these great coolers dont come with a seal already, it just makes sense to have it sealed.

I was a po boi....my teach said I needed a ruler for class....soooo I took my ol man's cooler lid & brung it to class ...every student be looking @ me all weird.....when I got home.....boy was my ol man pissed cuz he couldn't put his cold ones n the cooler....
Thank you for the excellent video! We ended up buying the BMX 25 over the IMX 24 as a result. You showed the BMX 25 to be so close in performance to its more expensive brother, that we couldn't justify the extra size externally of the IMX 24. I will say the IMX coolers definitely felt nicer and better constructed though; and it felt worth the extra cost in that respect. If they made the top flange a bit smaller on the IMX 25 it would've been much more palatable to go with that upgrade.
I'm in the same boat, considering at BMX 25 or IMX 24. The features look a bit nicer on the IMX but like you mentionex the larger footprint may not be worth it. Also the IMX looks to be about an extra 6lbs and I would be on my own when it is loaded.
A terrible review actually. Your science is flawed. First off, coolers must be prechilled before testing. Also, putting in 22 lbs of ice in each one is ridiculous as the small coolers are full with no air space and the larger coolers have lots of air. Cooling air is the most difficult task in a cooler or refrigerator. Had you filled each cooler to the top so that the coolers could be compared accurately you would have gotten different results
We used the same amount of ice in each one for our test to try and keep the variable consistent, but it would be interesting to see how the larger coolers hold up when full to the top with ice! Maybe another test is in our future...
@@OhioPowerTool there was another review that did a test between budget ice chests and big ice chests (can't remember the specific title) but the big ice chest that lasted 7 days full up, only lasted 3 days whe Half full.

Only in the U.S. do we need 100 different designs of the same cooler.

Fair point! Sounds like a round two should happen 👀
Maybe you should do a video Mr Bill Nye The Science Guy

I have 2 IMX 70's and they have gaskets.
We’ll done OPT
I have a 10 year old RotoMold Sportsman, it don't look like Igloo is in that game today? Too bad.....
The BMX 52 is up to $149 so definitely not worth buying it anymore when you can get a Rtic for 50 bucks more
The search button on your website launches the phone. And you have no contact info listed on the website...

@@Being_Joe Don't buy an IMX24 unless you have handled it at a store. Someone told me that and they were right. I did not buy.

It isn’t that serious calm down
Gotta fill those b words up with ice for it to be fair. Don't think that video will come and making it fair is very math-ie but can be done.

Not a good comparison. Fill all coolers to same level with ice to start off.
That is a good point, thank you for the feedback!
