Few automobile operators dim their headlights when another operator is coming in their direction as well. The days of common courtesy are over. Nobody holds the door open for the person following them into a building. Nobody will move their automobile away from the petrol pumps after filling the tank to allow someone else to use the pump while they go back inside to buy more items. Nobody will help a weaker person carry a heavy item. Nobody will rewind the rental VHS before returning the cassette.
@@Cryptonymicus When oncoming traffic insists on keeping their lights as bright as possible, I will simply help them out because obviously it is too dark for them. I make my city lights brighter, and turn on eight other off road lights to compliment my city lights and their high city lights. This will assure they will have the ample light they demand. It is done out of courtesy. After I pass their vehicle, I will then turn off the eight other headlights and dim the city lights. After all, not all drivers are visually impaired like the driver I just crossed. Being courteous, if the driver approaching me has their headlights bright, I will first flash only my city lights to see if they simply made a mistake and left the bright lights on from being out in a rural highway. If they do not turn off their bright lights they are indicating they need more light and I am happy to provide 1,375,500 total lumens for them.
I first found this video in late March or April of 2020 when we all wondered how long it would be before we would once again see people on platforms, in trains, and generally conducting commerce.
I just seen this on 05-14-2023 at 4:30am could not sleep and bumped into this video. Cool video 👀😋👍 I can't wait until every single line is converted into Magrail's instead of these 110 year old technology tracks and signals system. But I guess maybe it will happen after 2060 when I am long passed on from this earth. Which will be way too late for me to experience it. 🤷♀
Did this for over thirteen years long ago. I recall a snowy night taking a late train east and watching the fireworks of lavender colored plasma outside the train with the ice and snow dancing in clouds as we rolled through it all. I didn't miss the sick passenger who thought it proper to go to work sick, and infect us all in the train.
Very interesting and unique video (although many New Yorker's might not agree so). I've always wondered what it was like to ride on an inner-city commuter train, from the pilot's point of view. And what better way to see this than from the New York City Long Island area? I'm also amazed by how quiet these trains are, making slightly less noise than a commercial jetliner.
I’m a local to Metro North which is similar to the LIRR but for our modern New Haven Line we don’t use M9’s we use M8’s otherwise we have M2’s M3’s M6’s and M7’s besides the M1’s M4’s and M5’s, the ones that go to New Haven/Poughkeepsie are the M1’s M4’s and M5’s so stops would be after Yankee Stadium as a direct train to Poughkeepsie: Croton Harmon Garrison New Hamburg Poughkeepsie And then the line to Croton Harmon would be: Grand Central Harlem-125th St Yankees-E 153rd St Morris Hghts University Hghts Marble Hill Spuyten Duyvil Riverdale Ludlow Yonkers Hastings on Hudson Dobbs Ferry Ardsley on Hudson Irvington Tarrytown Philips Manor Scarborough Ossining Croton Harmon
Its unfortunate you didn't go one more stop to Little Neck. Have a friend who regularly commutes into the city from there and would have been nice to see his station.

A few things stand out in this video to me. At 16:27 that house has some nice bright colorful Christmas lights on the house!😃👍🎄. At 16:53-16:55 you can see the sign for Citi Field all the way to the far left then again at 17:06. From 17:08-17:28 on the right you can clearly see Arthur Ashe Stadium & Louis Armstrong Stadium as part of the USTA National Tennis Center!!!🎾🎾. Did the engineer reduce his headlights after getting on the main line? At 14:30 ish he put the high beams back on, dumped then at 17:00. why? Looks like he dims the lights approaching a station.
I remember quite a few years ago when faulty slack adjusters destroyed an entire series of railcars wheels. Flat spots and "burned" wheels all had to be replaced. I know, I was there.

Hal Eckman Thanks. I’ve only been to NYC once and I wasn’t fortunate enough to ride the subway. I’m trying to picture where this and the direction of travel.
No problem. It's going westbound from Penn station under the city and East River out to Queens where Amtrak then goes into Westchester county and NE to New Haven and Boston. The Long Island railroad goes east through Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties

2nd Post: The engineer on this train is "old school." he dims his headlight for an oncoming train. I understand not all engineers do this anymore.
You have to request the lights to be dimmed over the radio technically but it’s common curtesy to do it.

Opening scene only worth watching if the train starts moving WHILE the ppl are running down the platform!

Just curious, and hope somebody can answer: How does a wheel get a spot like that?
Locked up brakes is the usual cause. Steel sliding on steel doesn't wok out very well.

The LIRR has a mish-mash of color light signals and position light signals. Gotta hand it to the motormen; they've got to memorize both kinds.
Cats01 the ultimate goal is to replace all the position light signals with color light signals in the future but it all costs money
The LIRR, as of 07/02/2019, has 136 signals.

Do these trains use an overhead power gantry and also a third rail?
Third rail. Amtrak and NJ Transit use the overhead catenary

The ringing bell while the train is in motion (and even sometimes when it is stopped, in fact), is the acknowledger/alerter sound coming from the engineer's cab of the M3 trains- when a signal change or update, or a corresponding cab signal indicates a speed change is warranted/necessary, the engineer receives the ringing bell as an alert that he/she must acknowledge the signal and then comply with the speed indicated.
