I love that the presence of Christina singlehandedly changes IR from the hot-take-fest it had been since the Simon Borg days to an actual *analysis* of the plays. Keep 'em honest, Christina!
Idk about anyone else but I definitely miss Simon borg🤣
They just picked up some random guy and told him to ref the Charlotte game 😂😂
@@gavinpilato6035 Well respected doesn't constitute his poor performance for that game. Two game changing decisions that needed to be made there, if red bulls fail to make playoffs by two points then we will certainly look back on this and see how awful this was. The point is to avoid serious injuries and protect the welfare of the players, and clearly it was missed, not once, but twice. Thus leading me to believe there might have been some sort of bias or foul play here, be it with the teams, league, refereeing crew, players, etc.
@@gavinpilato6035 As a Red Bulls fan, I can assure you there were many more missed calls than what was shown here. The red card misses were the worst offenses, but Kyle Duncan should’ve received a second yellow when he was beat and stopped a counter attack by pulling the attackers jersey and holding him back. It was one of the most clear-cut tactical foul yellows you could imagine and although the ref called a foul, he somehow didn’t give the second yellow. Idk if he knew he fucked up on the first two earlier and decided to not give a red to “even things out,” but either way it was a third egregious missed red card. There were also tons of poor, inconsistent foul decisions throughout the game. It’s one thing to call a tight or loose game, but a complete other to go back and forth all game long with seemingly no rhyme or reason. Idk about his accolades, but I do know that this was one of if not the worst refereeing performance I’ve seen in the MLS.
@@CrisTheMex if they miss the playoffs due to a missed call in week 5, they have no business being in the playoffs
Tbf, any random guy is probably gonna call a match better than 75% of ProRefs
@@gavinpilato6035 I've got about 6 months of reffing done now. It's not easy. However, I don't see any of my refs (that haven't been fired/forced to stop reffing) missing extremely blatant calls, losing all sense of control in the match, or being excessively inconsistent. And we don't have VAR. And our pay is getting to play for free next season. It's hard. It's not impossible. It definitely is doable if you actually care, or at least forced to care by your job being on the line
As a Red Bulls fan, we killed our selves and lost this game. But dang, any of those red cards could’ve pushed the game in our favor.
I am entering my second year as a soccer ref, and am reviewing the law book again and LOVE watching these videos. Breaking down the calls from the top referees is really inspiring and awesome to learn from them. Thank you for doing this!
I am a ref as well and have been watching this for years and Unkel is just so great to hear.
Agreed, so nice having her here, and not having it be just hot takes
@@iansoccerreferee she’s a great mentor as well, had her as a mentor for our group at a referee academy here in texas. Very well spoken and explains things beautifully
I do like the shtick of Unkel ignoring Wiebe's annoying catch phrase.
What are they doing down there in Charlotte 💀💀
Christina Unkel is a legend let's go Cristina !! Next time put her name in the title though, featuring Christina Unkel
That costs extra
I'm a die hard Sporting KC fan and those were pretty obviously both yellows on Ben Sweat and well deserved. He played like a massive liability vs Seattle and Jordan Morris popped off. I can't believe those 2 REDS were missed in the Charlotte/NY game
I was at the match and completely agree. Sweat is a huge liability and needs to sit for a long while.
Yay more Christina!
Keep bringing these kinda videos. Helps the referrer community like myself. Much appreciate it!!!
throwing the ball at someone in retaliation to a foul has to be a red every time
Christina is kicking butt! Keep up the good stuff!
When Peter Vermes agrees that it was a yellow, then you know it was the right call
I really hope some of those Charlotte calls still get called Reds as WOW those are bad!...also yes GO HUSKIES!!!
As a red bulls fan this is insanity those players tried to injured them especially that 2nd imagine if he landed on his neck
I was at at the Charlotte game, was supporting my boys in purple, but honestly the referee should've called many fouls and cards on both sides.
Who was the VAR in RBNY vs CLT?
Helen Keller
Apparently nobody
Idk but it’s more likely your marriage will end in divorce than it is for that play to not be reviewed!
@@steven____ LMAO
Wow Charlotte vs RBNY refereeing was bad, 2 missed red cards
I know it's not really what these videos cover, but how about the amount of time Mendoza gave in MN? Not only was the extra minute+ unwarranted, especially considering it had elapsed after a GOAL KICK, but the original 6 minutes made no sense given the number of stoppages. Not once in the game was there a major injury or VAR, so I really don't know where he got that much stoppage time from. Anyways, it wouldn't've mattered if the Loons players had actually played until the whistle, even if they had no reason to think it would continue after it passed midfield
MLS and PRO let teams know before the season started that additional time was going to increase to be more realistic, much like was done in the World Cup. Substitutions, cards, and goal celebrations all count toward added time. Also, since Minnesota got TWO yellow cards for time wasting IN STOPPAGE TIME (plus two slow goal kicks), I don't see how the 1:17 additional added time can be considered unwarranted.
Not every referee has bought into it yet, but they’re starting to be an emphasis on adding any intentional time wasting moment on a stoppage time at the end. They are starting to push this in some European leagues, and it also was used in the World Cup. I did not watch that game, was there a lot of time wasting your the end? That may have been where the minutes came from.
This is true by stoppage time standards of yesteryear, nowadays we prefer 90 minutes of football be played
What about the phantom yellow card on Obinna Nwobodo in the FC Cincinnati/Nashville game?
Sur les 4 rouges il y en avais où j'étais pour (notamment celui de Chicago face à l'inter miami) et d'autres où ils y avaient juste jaunes
Yikes, tough day in Charlotte...
Have to disagree regarding the penalty shout in Portland. The LA player went through Fogaca in order to toe the ball. If no contact, Fogaca would have stayed on his feet and would have possession of the ball. Portland was robbed. Having said that, they didn't deserve the win based on their performance...
The back leg especially was not clean.
TÁ PARECENDO A NFL!
The real question is how many drinks did the VAR guy have n that Charlotte vs NYRB game?
When one game takes up almost half the episode you know we need to talk about the reffing issues... This is ridiculous.
WHOS REFFING THE REFEREES AND VAR between Charlotte and red bulls.
Nothing on the Nwobodo yellow card in NSHvCIN?
Nothing from the RSL game? Shocking
Yeah I feel like Julio should have a penalty shout
Please show the decision: foul, yello, red, advantage
Man the best carolina team going to bad with the colorado rapids the best colorado team
not making himself bigger!?!?!?!??
literally extends his forearm out to MAKE HIMSELF BIGGER
Those should have been reds
Is Cristina related to Ted? 🤔
That's well known. Are you attempting to be funny or imply something?
@@choduffield um no? Ted was the ref for a recent CLTFC game and I was curious if they were related. Damn
@@daniellerivera1797 Got it. I thought you were trying to imply something. They are married.
What about the pen in the nycfc game
Deserved pen
Harper got the old dom Dwyer but If it was dom he would've got the red
1. Wrong choice by the referee. Red card for serious found play. I bet $100 that both the VAR official(s) and the center ref got talked to from a ref coach.
How dare you!
What if the referee of the first game shown forgot his cards at home?
You cannot blame him!
(10 sec later, referee used the yellow card).
How dare you!
What if he is blind? You cannot discriminate an disabled person!
No way that charlotte didn’t get carded for those 2 challenges what a joke
4 missed red cards in the charlotte game
1. 0:57 Red
2. 2:32 Yellow
3. 3:05 Yellow
4. 3:31 Foul
5. 3:33 Yellow
6. 4:42 Keep playing
7. 5:42 Red
8. 6:45 Penalty
9. 7:13 Penalty
8:37 Yellow
Anyone else missing Charlie´s, ¨LET¨S GO?!¨
Nope. I cringed every time he said it. It sounded forced and unnatural unlike the classic "See you next time!"
nope
How about Timbers keeper, David Bingham, going off with an injury he got tackling the ball on a CLEARLY offside play?
This isn't what the rule change was for. Raise the flag when someone is clearly offsides.
Mention to the hosts prior to coming to this segment and there's a much better chance they'll look at it.
I couldn't find any highlight of the play, but CLEARLY offside plays are flagged. If there is any question, the AR will keep the flag down to not take away a goal scoring opportunity. There must have been some question.
@@choduffield have you seen how the refs have let it play out? Have you ever seen a goal scored then flagged for offsides that was wrong?
Refs know when a play is offsides
@@choduffield do you have the hosts number so I can send them a text next time?
@@nochepatada He states to tag them on social media. I feel like that has to have some influence given how often certain teams are highlighted.
@@nochepatada Absolutely I've seen a goal scored and then it called back. It happens often in all leagues using VAR around the globe. If they absolutely knew, then VAR wouldn't need to exist. There's a big difference in them believing it is offside and them absolutely knowing it is clearly offside. The first yearish of VAR we saw a lot of potential goals stopped by a flag only to see on replay the AR was wrong, but once you stop play it's too late. Nobody wants that.
My ankles feel good these days at age 55 even after all the ankle sprains and breaks. That may change in the future but I have high hopes. How is everybody else's ankles, here?
Where's Extratime?
What about the clear hand ball on Portland that wasn’t called
I thought galaxy was timbers and Reciprocally
Skipped the MN vs VAN game. The ref kept the game in play until VAN had enough chances at goal instead of watching the actual game clock.
the center ref from the charolette game needs to get kicked out of the league
and y’all thought cincinnati played dirty!
You missed one from the Red Bulls game. Kyle Duncan on a yellow tugs the jersey of a player running by him to stop a counter. Classic tactical foul yellow card, should’ve been a second yellow. I think that that’s the only red we deserved, but they obviously deserved those two that didn’t get called. Worst reffed match I’ve ever watched in the MLS all-around, ref had no control whatsoever
Make this SKC guy a MEME
Referee accountability now!!!
💛💚🌲💚💛
I thought three blind mice was just a meme but I guess they're on the reffing staff in Nashville.
MLS favors teams with better attendance, on the micro and macro.
Okay, so Cáceres poked the ball with his feet. He also swept Fogaça's legs out from under him in the act. Horrendous call by Penso. Terrible take by Wiebe.
NOTHING ABOUT THE WAYYYY TOO LONG OF ADDED TIME IN THE MINNESOTA GAME JOKE OF A LEAGUE
There's plays all over the league that don't get addressed. Partly it's because of the amount of time available. Partly it's because nobody reaches out to them to even consider including it, but then they complain here that it wasn't looked at.
And in this case, I'm not sure what they're review. They'd have to watch the entire half and record every second they thought was relevant, then add it up to come to a conclusion, and then make a comment of either "yeah, seemed a little long" or "they got it about right." You might be interested in that, but I know I'm surely not.
I’m sick of refs having to go to VAR for easy decision, it’slike they don’t even try to make the right call the first time. They just let everything go and hope VAR cleans up the mess
Referees, from the start of VAR, are banned from the behavior you mention. They call the game the same with or without VAR. VAR is just a backstop for things missed.
The way I see it is that the entire game is being held to a higher standard. Referees missed calls all the time in the past. Some were small. Some we thought were obvious on a replay. Now that VAR is there, it looks to some that referees are letting VAR make the decision instead of them when in fact it likely would have been called the same without the chance for a correction.
Why are we so soft these days. Soccer is a contact sport, bottom line.
First red card argument. Pretty obvious but MLS struggles because they are so inconsistent. How can they miss this?!
Second one, the header. There’s no violent conduct, both players had arms out, one had more momentum than the other, one jumped higher than the other, BOTH HAD ARMS OUT TOWARDS EACHOTHER, but because one jumped higher and faster he is in the wrong? it’s a 50/50, protect yourself by going into the tackle hard, as basic and learning to pass and move.
Reyes double foul? First tackle You show one view that doesn’t give the whole Story, he steps in front to cut the pass, the other player tries to hold him back and just isn’t strong enough and doesn’t move his feet so he goes down dramatically… we are getting too soft here people.
Second tackle is shoulder to shoulder no? Of course he stopped an attack that’s his JOB. SOFT
TOLKIN has no desire to play the ball, he looks back and stops his run to run some sort of basketball screen. No foul there except tolkin throwing the ball.
first clip the lad with with the shite trim pulled out of the challenge looked light
1st: 0:28 Easiest Red of my life. Why have VAR if it's not for moments like this?!
2nd: 1:51 Should be Red. It's violent conduct. At least a yellow card??? What were refs thinking that game??
3rd: 2:42 Yellow all day. This is Soccer, not wrestling.
4th: 3:02 Yellow, possible Red for denial of goal scoring opportunity.
5th: 3:23 Yellows for each. Uncalled for to throw the ball because you're mad. It doesn't "look like" violence but it's a violent action. Unnecessary. The player throwing the ball should be fined for this action.
6th: 4:22 Penalty. Defender might have touched the ball first but I see the leg making contact with the striker's leg before the ball had contact. I feel he made contact first in order to touch it first.
7th: 4:55 No Goal. Great strike from the player to put it on target. But it's obstruction on the keeper.
8th: 5:23 Red. Good use of VAR. Good to bring the ref back to watch review.
9th: 6:13 Penalty. Defender missed the ball and made contact with the striker in the box. Good use of VAR.
10th: 6:51 Handball, Inside the Box, Penalty. While the player kept his hand close to him, his motion of his arm puts his elbow in an obstructive position. Perhaps VAR could draw lines from the player's feet compared to the box. Defender starts in the box but might have crossed out of the box by the time the ball hits him. To me it seemed he was within the box, VAR should be able to define his location. I see the defenders Right leg drifting out of the box but his body seems to stay in. Defender pulls his arm closer in the moment the ball hits him.
11th: 8:16 Easy yellow.
3:02 - There was a defender 3 feet away. Certainly not DOGSO
6:51 - If there's one thing we've learned about camera angles, there's no way anyone could definitively call that in the penalty area. I'm at least 50% there, but that's not close to being good enough.
1st replay was just a guy missed the ball, its unfortunate but no malice was there.
Malice is not a factor when you "endanger the safety of the opponent" which is the argument for this one; malice IS a primary requirement for "violent conduct".
