    There are a lot of deserved criticisms of MLS refereeing, but the league discussing controversial calls every week and keeping open discussion is miles ahead of any other league in the world. We need refs more humanized

    So what about that elbow Maldonado took in the 45+1 in San Jose vs LAFC - you focused on the wrong play in that match!

    1:58. "Unnaturally bigger". This is where I chafe at calls on this issue. He's trying to win a 1 on 1 with opposing defender. Soccer is physical. Players block opponents with their arms. In context of the physical struggle between the two players, his arm extended outward is 100% natural. Players in the box should not be constrained to waddling like penguins, with arms pinned behind backs, to avoid handball calls. Arms are a normal part of vigorous physical movement, especially in the context of a hard physical challenge with another player.

    Well, Dillon Nealis committed the most cardinal sin of all.
    He gave the refs a chance to make a call.
    When you do that, you can't be surprised when they go against you.

      I have had to referee matches in MLS next (MLS own youth academy) with two and sometimes as the only ref. Quite an indictment on the state of referees that they have to advertise on here

    While Nealis put his arm on Carranza’s midsection, I don’t think it was enough to hold him back, let alone send him flying like that! So I would’ve given Carranza a yellow for simulation and no pk!

      Probably enough to affect his play for the ball. Enough? Well, he made sure to have to look like it was. Spinning around with the pull instead of falling the opposite direction would have looked much more naturally convincing though.

    I'm so sick and tired of diving! It ruins the sport! I wish they would show Yellows more often for diving.

    • @choduffield
      @choduffield Рік тому

      I say all the time, that's tough during the game. You have to be absolutely sure you're right as a referee. Carding someone who actually did get fouled......not good.
      While they do fine players after the fact, they need to be giving post-game yellows which go against the yellow card accumulation for the season.

    • @unprepaired-gamer
      @unprepaired-gamer Рік тому

      @David Duffield but couldn't the booth do more to snuff this out? Have the guy upstairs check and let play continue. If he sees that it was a dive, the ref can treat it like playing the advantage. Then dir8ng the next dead ball, give him the yellow. I know it'll add up and eventually suspend the player, that's the point. Make the players no that diving has absolutely NO place in the MLS.

    • @choduffield
      @choduffield Рік тому

      @@unprepaired-gamer VAR *could* do a lot of things, but they aren't tasked to do them because the game would be slowed to a crawl. That's not to say this isn't a good scope creep to their duties to identify yellow card simulation. The duties of VAR has remained pretty consistent (have they even changed?) since it was introduced. I think that's a good thing. We absolutely don't want to have play stopped more often to go through one to 5 minute reviews of plays. So, yeah, they *could*, but at this point I'd rather have fines and post-game yellows (which lead to suspensions) to try and curb it.

    I disagree on the following
    Lowe handball: It probably was a handball, but I’m not 100% sure. If you’re not 100% sure, you don’t send it for review.
    Lewis O’Brien foul: That’s a yellow card. You don’t give out red cards based on how badly the opposing player got injured. You lose me when you argue that it was excessive force. It was a genuine, albeit ill-advised attempt to win the ball. It was a one footed challenge and the studs and foot went nowhere near the opposing players leg. The attacking player just happened to get tripped in a way that injured him. Yellow all day.

    Wiebe is incorrect in saying it's a penalty but also simulation. Simulation is pretending a foul was committed against you, almost always without contact. If you claim this is a penalty contact foul, you CANNOT call it simulation. "Embellishment" is not a penalty in IFAB. This is not hockey. You absolutely CANNOT call a PK, then give him a YC for "simulation". If a PRO referee did this, kiss his career goodbye.

      There's no contact down low. I think that even if the arm wasn't touched, the attacker would have intentionally kicked the ground looking for a PK Referee got played on this one even after VAR tried to help him out. PRO agreed on their Inside Video Review segment.

    I just want to point out that in the penalty call at 2:00, it can be true that NYRB player commits a penalty and the Philly player is guilty of simulation. It wouldn't change the restart, which is a penalty kick, and the Philly player would still get a yellow.

    FC Cincinnati had some issues with Guido Gonzales in the past when both team and referee were in the USL, namely the most egregious not handball penalty call you may ever see from a professional referee when FCC played Rochester in July of 2017. In the DC match, it was an obvious red that was blown by Guido.
