Hello there! While I’m not the great commissioner who, well, commission this, I am the proud creator of this match up! And wow, seeing it get a track and especially done by Therewolf Media was like a impossible dream to me, so seeing it happen right before me feels unbelievable.
Here are also the main theme or connection to it, cuz they are pretty lengthy and long so I keep it short:
Bright jacket colored wearing Cyberpunk protagonists who live on the edge of society after varied tragedies happened related to lost of their families, including the death of their parents, a car/bike accident and numerous deaths of their gangs members, who are weaponed with mechanical equipment known for their speed and fight against modified humans and mankind‘s corporate evil to protect their new found crime related families and love. And for something real funny, while David’s arc is him losing his humanity and sanity because of the corruption of his city, Kaneda manages to be a decent human being throughout his story, and ironically enough, his archenemy is someone who also loses their humanity because they started to take in supplements on them and doing drugs to calm themselves down which all started by the corruption of their world and being a victim of their circumstances.
More connections can be found around the newest post on the Death Battle Match Up subreddit if anyone is interested!
But for now, let’s get to the main fish here, onto the track and my review of it:
    Hm….
    THIS GOES HARD AS F*CK!!!
I like how quiet it is if it makes sense, it feels more illuminating and somewhat somber, but also has the techno tunes of a street race and fight, It’s also feels very intense.
It also goes faster and slower at places, like a motorcycle or running, taking short breaks to go to different path on the last second, I like the occasional callback to Ego Death's motifs (it is an Akira track after all), the bell sounds in particular is a nice note to hear.
I love how in the beginning around 0:30, it feels when where two proper street legends meet each other and have a fight I like the chanting around 1:30 in, I imagine that’s where David starts to succumb to Cyberpsychosis, similar how Tetsuo began to mutant in Tetsuo VS Magento, and how it immediately starts to get faster and faster and faster.
It feels extremely corny to say this but I’m happy.
I‘m happy that people love this match up has much as I do, I have been working hard on it to spread around the community and this is one of its biggest milestones yet, and now with a rumored new installment or remake for Akira and Edgerunners still being a popular anime, I hope that we, as a community can push this match up more harder than before, in till it could possibly become even a episode! Which might possibly happen because it’s also getting submitted into the next Champion Ballot! So whenever that’s out, better got it if you want to see it become a episode!

both are pretty much just regular human beings with some neat weapons on their side, while David is much faster with the Sandasvista, he can’t use it all the time because his brain might get cooked, and even if, he can’t blitz Kaneda because Kaneda‘s laser gun is much faster than David, and is powerful enough to instantly kill David, but Kaneda isn’t durable enough to tank the bullets from the guns that David has and will surely die if he gets shot in the brain. It is super close, and you could make valid arguments for either sides on who would win.

      @Annihilate0405 11 місяців тому +11

@aidenreed680 Based on what is said, David probably wins. While Kaneda's laser gun is faster than David and can insta-kill him, he has to aim it at David and fire before he gets blitzed. What I believe would happen is Kaneda tries to shoot David, but David uses the Sandavista to get out of the way of the line of fire before Kaneda fires the laser gun, giving David the chance to shoot Kaneda in the head.

YEESSS!!! So glad it’s finally here! This is the second track I commissioned with Aaron, and once again he absolutely outdid himself with this one! I actually had several matchup ideas for doing another music piece, so I held a voting poll on Reddit for other fans to decide what it’ll be. This was the winner, and in retrospect I think it was overall the best choice!
Cyberpunk Edgerunners was one of the best series I’ve seen in recent memory. Even if I was pretty mixed on the original gameplay material, I was completely enthralled by the world around it, and the anime adaptation for it in particular struck a cord with me in ways I totally didn’t expect. David’s character in particular quite resonated with me as a struggler trying to get by and ultimately besting the odds, and being the huge Death Battle fan that I am, I would love to see him in an actual episode one of these days. And given how influential of a series Akira is one the concept of Futuristic dystopian fiction as a whole, I think the OG gigachad himself Shotaro Kaneda would make for a stellar opponent for him; not just in terms of debatability and animation potential, but the “old vs new” thematics and aesthetics as two distinct series that took the world by storm.
Really love what Aaron did with this score; most of the reference tracks I sent in were from the 2077 game’s soundtrack (which the anime borrowed a lot from) since I overall thought it would accompany the fight best, but I personally thought the highlight of the song was the seamless transition into Kaneda’s theme near the halfway point. Therewolf’s previous Akira track, “Ego Death” was easily one of my favourite instrumental pieces from last year, and the way he gave the same vibe while still sounding original with this one is such a treat. Also the change in tempo near the end was actually a personal request; I love how many of Therewolf’s tracks tell stories with the sound, and for this one, I wanted to convey a scene of David overusing his Sandevistan and realizing he had to end the fight quickly, and Kaneda piecing this together and attempting to wait out the clock until his opponent reaches his time limit. And it even sounds like there’s a bit of a fake out ending in there, splendid!!!
Overall this was totally worth the wait. Thank you so much for this, Therewolf. You never fail to blow our expectations out of the water.

    Comparisons:
Both are the teenage protagonists who wears a brightly-coloured jacket with a logo plastered behind it and would earn the title of a cyberpunk.
Both are from series set on a future earth within a highly technologically advanced and dystopian city, where society has changed for the worse (Night City and Neo-Tokyo), being filled with crime, as well as gangs rising up and then dropping like flies all around the corner.
They both are brash, hot headed, and filled with ambitions along with their crew/gang which act as their new found family.
Both of them pursue their cyberpunk paths after dropping out of highschool, the deaths of their parents, and being influenced plus victims to their societies' flaws.
They fight against scientifically-modified humans who gained their powers via transferring (pretty much every cyberpunk in Night City for David and Tetsuo Shima for Kaneda).
Both are marksman and use a special machine which is often remarked by its coolness and known for its speed (the Sandavistan and Kaneda's iconic bike).
Both of their series belong to the cyberpunk genre, with Akira being the one which popularized around all of the world and Cyberpunk being the new golden modern child of the genre. Said series also have heavy political undertones, criticizing the modern society we live in with all the new technology being invented and how the modern man becomes more hollow and empty by the sheer pressure of this modern world.
Both of their franchises are more popular thanks to their animated adaptations (Akira becoming iconic not only in Japan but all around the world / Edgerunners being a mix combination of east and west, which when it was released on Netflix, revived the game it was adapted from).
While David’s arc is him losing his humanity and sanity because of the corruption of his city, Kaneda manages to be a decent human being throughout his story, and ironically enough, his archenemy is someone who also loses their humanity because they started to take in supplements on them and doing drugs to calm themselves down which all started by the corruption of their world and being a victim of their circumstances.

Don't really know much for Shotaro's end (as I don't remember much if anything on Akira), but I do know that David can have a bit of an advantage given he has a military grade Sandevistan installed and, if looking at him by the end of the show, a large amount of cyberware including the gorilla arms from Maine.
Though he did come close to succumbing to Cyberpsychosis a few times too, so it might fuck him up during the fight. But given how much he has, until I do learn more about Shotaro, might say David has this.
Not saying it's a stomp, but he could take it.

Y'know, after seeing freaking Emmett VS David being pushed by some people I forgot that David had some normal matchups too. And I'm all for that. Also damn that track art is cool, the inclusion of the moon in the background is epic as someone who's seen Edgerunners.
Hearing a fully electronic track from Therewolf is always a joy, especially after Ego Death was so good (speaking of which, don't think I didn't hear those references to it throughout the track. Really smooth but well implemented and cool to hear) and this one makes full use of both Akira and Cyberpunk's musical styles. It perfectly blends the sort of "quiet" feel that a lot of older electronic tracks have, fitting perfectly both franchises.
Added to that the fact that the track periodically devolves into much heavier and sombre segments gets across really well the tragic and violent side of the characters in a way that's extremely enjoyable to hear.
I also like the fact that the song is somewhat repetitive in its structure and used motifs. Some may see it as an issue but in this case I think it fits. I don't know much of Akira so I'll mostly speak in David's case here: of all we see of David in Edgerunners, he's a character that is stuck chasing others' dreams, never actually making his own and resulting in him stagnating in his ambitions (of course as a character he evolves massively tho). And the fact that the track rarely moves away from the motifs it established throughout the track, even ending with an already established one, gets this perfectly across. Down to his last breath he'll still be the same he ever was: looking after others before himself which justifies why the climax of the song is the same as a motif heard prior to it.
That or I'm just looking too deep into it.
But putting the meaning of the track aside for now, I must mention a few segments on their own. First being the 0:49-1:07 segment because it's really freaking good. It has the heaviness and electronic feeling fitting of Cyberpunk's brutal dystopic setting and of course has the instruments that are signature of Akira's OST to make a really good mix of both OSTs that perfectly fit both characters. Really feels like a segment where both are just trying to end the other as brutally as they can one way or another as only the neon lights of the city lights up their surroundings.
Second thing I'd like to note is the choirs heard near the half of the song. It's quite obvious that they're meant to be for Kaneda and even if I don't know much of Akira I can for sure enjoy the parallel that's made with Ego Death. While in Ego Death the choirs were meant to showcase the sheer abomination that Tetsuo becomes, here they feel much more orderly and even if they're still quite menacing, they almost feel hopeful with an increase pitch instead of Ego Death's decrescendo pitch to the choirs. It perfectly shows the difference between Tetsuo that let himself be swallowed by higher powers, succumbing in the process while Kaneda (and to a further extent David too, making the choirs fit for both characters) tries to make the most of the dystopian world they live in, seeing hope and success in it even if the chances of reaching it are minimal. Great parallel done there.
Finally I'd like to mention the whole 2:22-2:50 segment which I think is a great showcase of increase in scale for a track. It mostly reuses motifs heard earlier in the song but here they're sped up heavily, clearly adding a feeling of tension and scale to the segment that's easy to visualize as a representation of both characters giving their all and, specifically, David pushing himself to his limits, overusing his tech to the point of almost ending himself in the hopes of winning the fight. Gives a great sense of scale to the track as said before and also works doubly so as it transitions to the aforementioned slower, more brutal motif and, more importantly, the climax after it which has the main melody heard throughout the song playing in a crescendo manner.
This whole final climax starting at 3:11 is really well done IMO for a few reasons. The first one is that it's notably slower than the aforementioned up-sped segment which reflects well how both characters have already reached their peak and have expanded most of their energy. It's a really good way to showcase how, whoever wins, they'll reflect their original material in that their death won't be honorable nor heroic. It'll be a bloodbath where both are trying to rip one another apart as their body gives out from exhaustion.
But there's another reason which also plays into this. And that's the fact that the segment goes crescendo. It may seem like a small detail only used to give scale and tension to the track but to me it has the added effect of perfectly representing the characters mentality: even to their last breath they still don't give up and try to give the best of themselves, even if it means completely destroying themselves in the process. Of course this mostly applies to David given it's the one I know the most but it still calls back to the tone of Akira in that even in a rotten world it's worth it to reach for happiness and hope instead of falling into despair, something that's well represented in this ending that shows that, even when exhausted and giving out, both still are giving their very best to come out victorious. And I find that to be a wonderfully respectful representation of both characters.
Overall this track is definitely worthy of the two great characters it features. It represents them wonderfully in addition to just sounding fantastically unique too. Even with all I said I likely missed a lot of stuff, notably on the Akira side of things, so I'm sure someone that's actually a fan of the manga/movie will appreciate this track even more than I already do but still, that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the track because damn I really like it. Absolutely wonderful with this for sure.
