I'm glad to see you cover this one, this is my all-time favorite HL2 mod next to Research and Development. The Greek mythology is there to add flavor to the story. Perseus is the warrior that slayed Medusa, Athena armed him with the mirrored shield that he used to reflect her gaze back at her. The AI lady is named Minerva (the Roman name for Athena), she was telling you that it was she who got you the HEV suit and the combine helicopter so you could come to this little island and kill a monster for her. Adam Foster worked on Portal 2 at Valve and added similar easter eggs there. Google some things like "Portal 2 Tartarus" and "Portal 2 Prometheus" to find more info about it.
Also, the beginning of that whole "underground" section, where you wake up at the bottom of the test shaft as flaming debris falls from the 'bove? See also 12:30...
Minerva has a pretty solid ending, so I don't mind it. That being said, I would love to see a continuation for it if Foster ever gets around to that. Wonder if he wants to, even.
If you want to dig even deeper, minerva is technically a sequel to it's previous mod for HL1 called Someplace Else, the inspiration for minerva is clearly the two hits from Bungie, those being the Marathon series and Halo, the way the first introduction to the map resembles the silent cartographer + the way Athena communicates with you resembles the terminals where Leela and Durandal would communicate with the player, i urge you radhaz make some videos about Marathon, "oh but how that ties in into half-life" well there's some maps for hl1 and hldm specially Halls3 which started as Marathon netmaps... Anyways sorry for the text wall, lob u pakistani king ❤
This mod was and still is peak 2000's HL2 modding, and playing it with Mmod only makes it better for overhauling the combat encounters even though the vanilla version of Minerva Metastasis is still pretty challenging even on normal difficulty.
Glad to finally learn more about and finally play Minerva thanks to this video. The mod took heavier inspiration from Bungie's past works than I expected, particularly Marathon with the passive-aggressive/pragmatic yet still caring AI guiding you through transmitted terminal prompt messages, playing as a silent codenamed wild card character who has historically flip flopped sides between a evil alien collective empire and humanity just so he could better throw a wrench (in this mod even literally) into the former's plans, and of course doing a grand search and destroy sabotage of the Alien's new master plan before bullet congaing thru the resulting chaos they barely had time to process happened. Heck, the segment where you are slowly fighting headcrabs from a point of advantage as you head down like in normal half life only to then get ambushed from where you came from and play with the tables both turned and in your favor on 2 fronts at the same time is a great re-imagining of one of the good levels from the first game. I can see why Valve hired the person who made this. Its one thing for a modder/dev to show/reference what they were a fan of as a tribute, its another to take not only the story telling/plot ideas but level design/setpiece/enemy encounter design as base concept inspiration to experiment and iterate successfully upon in a fun yet original feeling quality way. Dont know what they got placed to work on in Valve but I hope they worked on or will work on something great or atleast will be able to work on another mod/game outside of valve if not (imagine if they got to work along side the Entropy Zero or Raising the Bar devs, would be a match made in heaven).
I CAN'T BELIEVE you did not mentioned SECOND marvellous part of this mod: THE SOUNDTRACK written by ZhayTee (Joseph Toscano) ! He became one of my favourite indie musicians for years back then in the 2000-10's. The soundtrack of Minerva is legendary and indescribable memorable! And more of that... I FOUND Minerva existence because of these ZhayTee works. It was mid 2000's and I found these compositions in a local network without any proper media-data, so it took some additional time to find music creator and lead the way to the whole origins (media research was way more harder back then). I think this soundtrack is even more exceptional and memorable for me than Minerva itself. JUST LISTEN TO IT.
Minerva is quite the legend. And nice seeing you using MMOD. While I personally prefer an older version of MMOD (two hand pistol holding is just... just feels right), it is the way I played the HL2 games with, the old stuff just didn't do it for me after playing countless hours of Gmod.
This was one of the first HL2 mods I ever played and it set a very high bar for me. Good video. Maybe it's just blurry in the video, but the other side of the portal has some pretty interesting architecture and some antlions running around IIRC.
The MMOD version's portal seems to be bugged, to take a guess at why there's a disparity. I went and re-checked the original steam release myself and the other side of the portal depicts a sandy, rocky environment with Antlions, their mounds, and a lot of combine metal pillars sticking up from out of the ground.
Great video! It makes me happy to know that I wasn't the only one who got stuck in the section where you had to shoot the cable. I had to watch a gameplay video to figure out what to do, but in my defense, I was only 14 or 16 when I played that mod back then.
I remember playing this around 2007/2008 and I was genuinely blown away by the quality of the level design, it really felt like the rare example of a user made map that is just as good as anything the games developers could ever come up with
After watching the Build 2046: Beta Edition, then watching this video... The depressing world of 2046's hopes n dreams to be shattered by the insanity of Minerva, is such a weird beauty to me.

That's mostly a load of crap. For one, you literally see the HEV suit's boot-up sequence when you wake up after the explosion. You also get messages through the suit's communications interface throughout the mod. For another thing, even without any MMOD, the HEV features and viewmodels from HL2 are completely unaltered. The protagonist's status as a Combine unit is intentionally left vague, but it's unlikely he was a proper Overwatch soldier, considering how it's impossible to reprogram them, and they have their entire lower bodies replaced by armored synthetic parts which (alongside their bodysuits themselves) don't seem to be easily removable to fit inside an HEV suit. Also, as a side note, this mod is a sequel to a HL1 mod called Someplace Else, which further details the background of this particular HEV suit, and Athena herself.

To my knowledge, there's no indication that a Combine soldier's lower half isn't like is their upper halves in terms of modifications. 2. Combine soldiers have to undergo memory replacement, so who's to say that the main character wasn't rescued before going through the procedure? Judging by the all of the Athena stand-in's dialogue, My best guess (and speculation too, due to the vague-ness) is that MINVERVA: Metastasis' player character was a former metrocop who was forcefully promoted to a soldier, escaped capture before getting their brain scrubbed, and got rescued by the Athena stand-in soon after.

We also never see any rebels wearing any Combine gear other than metrocop stuff, so it seems likely that the bodysuits are hard to remove once put on. In general, I doubt an Overwatch soldier's physiology would work well with an HEV suit, but I could be completely wrong. As for whether or not our so-called Perseus is an actual Overwatch soldier, it's possible. Again, it's left really vague in the mod, we just know he achieved a rank higher than a metrocop, and whether or not he was allowed to keep any autonomy is unknown. Ultimately, it comes down to Adam Foster's interpretation of the Combine and their rank structure. Technically, what's stopping him? JSawyer made his FNV mod while being a developer of FNV. Just declare that your mod is not canon in any way, and you're good.
I think Minerva gets a great look to it just because of the Combine area. I think the concept Combine stuff looks amazing, very mechanical, tons of moving parts, very industrial. And half life 2 is very bleak and not really that. It has mechanical and industrial here and there, but not a lot of moving parts (much like the big pistons that would've moved around in Air Exchange, which I wish we could've gotten). Minerva has all these pluses that the concepts had and I think it makes it great. I'm glad I got to play it last year or so, was a fun mod that can't really be forgotten.

i think the way the story is conveyed to you and the character Athena are heavily inspired by such games as Marathon and early Halo Adam made a map prior to this for og Half-Life, Someplace Else which also employs text messages from an unknown source that seems awfully similar to this one.
I'm not big on using MMod on a old mod and review it like that, but I like the idea of mixing the old with the new. This mod is like the good ending to that one mod that was sent to Valve. I feel the visuals are not "better" than Valve's, but rather more fitting to the trope-influenced idea of the Combine, like we know how factory-heavy and inhuman they are, but in HL2, it doesn't lean into that on a stereotypical way you'd expect, such as what other settings would do.

If you are interested in another mod creator that got hired to work at Valve check Mission Improbable (it has a way to play with mmod but I wouldn't recommend it because for some reason episode 1 and 2 enemies don't appear with it and it breaks scripts) I think the creator is still working at Valve or at least back when cs2 released he was still there

if the map is a homage to halo 1's silent cartographer then athena is supposed to be cortana. or rather the proto 'cortana letters' dialogue where she reference mythology more.

we might have gotten more out of this if Adam hadn't gotten a job at Valve, putting development on hold for the mod series so I guess his gain was our loss
Wish this would be ported to Entropy Zero 2. Would make more sense of a captured elite was used with the captured armor. Only issue is that hostile combine soldiers crash the game as of late.
What hurts me is not the fact this mod is so fucking good, it's the fact this mod is so damn good while being so well made and compact, but this many years later we rarely get anything that gets close to it. Many modders seem obsessed with adding more and more shit to their mods as if that'll make it good. Fuck that, sounds like bloating something mediocre to me. Base weapons and base resources can still create gold, it's how you use them.
hoping one of yous can help, i wanna play this with MMod and it doesnt work. I have current mmod installed, minerva from steam installed and all the SDKs and when i open mmod minerva the menu is just purple checkers and start new game doesnt do anything
fun fact for anyone who hasn't played the original mod and only played the mmod version: in the original version the portal actually had an image of the combine overworld where you see the dropships moving towards the portal before exiting out of it. this in my opinion downgrades the original mod as in mmod you dont get to see the overworld in the portal and it just feels less immersive, especially with athena mentioning that they "know that place" when we dont actually see that "place". and thats even mentioning all the other things that mmod removed such as that planet earth hologram that you see after you losing your weapons as well as other stuff like that, i honestly dont understand why it all had to be removed and i really consider the mmod port a huge disappointment as it essentially downgrades the mod rather than improves it. and if seriously never experienced the original mod before playing the mmod version, then i feel sorry for you.

It is a pretty cool soundtrack. I really wish some people talked about some of the custom music done for Half Life and Portal mods.

If you are interested in another mod creator that got hired to work at Valve check Mission Improbable (it has a way to play with mmod but I wouldn't recommend it because for some reason episode 1 and 2 enemies don't appear with it and it breaks scripts) I think the creator is still working at Valve or at least back when cs2 released he was still there

i have played really small amount of hl2 mods, mostly during the dry period before alyx came out, but this was one of them and it really is on par with valve games

if the map is a homage to halo 1's silent cartographer then athena is supposed to be cortana. or rather the proto 'cortana letters' dialogue where she reference mythology more.

we might have gotten more out of this if Adam hadn't gotten a job at Valve, putting development on hold for the mod series

Wish this would be ported to Entropy Zero 2. Would make more sense of a captured elite was used with the captured armor. Only issue is that hostile combine soldiers crash the game as of late.

What hurts me is not the fact this mod is so fucking good, it's the fact this mod is so damn good while being so well made and compact, but this many years later we rarely get anything that gets close to it. Many modders seem obsessed with adding more and more shit to their mods as if that'll make it good.
Fuck that, sounds like bloating something mediocre to me. Base weapons and base resources can still create gold, it's how you use them.
I love the mods that are integrated with Mmod.
But how do you integrate Mmod with such mods?
Im not sure honestly. I think there might be a MMod SDK or something that lets you make mods compatible with MMod.

hoping one of yous can help, i wanna play this with MMod and it doesnt work. I have current mmod installed, minerva from steam installed and all the SDKs and when i open mmod minerva the menu is just purple checkers and start new game doesnt do anything
fun fact for anyone who hasn't played the original mod and only played the mmod version: in the original version the portal actually had an image of the combine overworld where you see the dropships moving towards the portal before exiting out of it. this in my opinion downgrades the original mod as in mmod you dont get to see the overworld in the portal and it just feels less immersive, especially with athena mentioning that they "know that place" when we dont actually see that "place". and thats even mentioning all the other things that mmod removed such as that planet earth hologram that you see after you losing your weapons as well as other stuff like that, i honestly dont understand why it all had to be removed and i really consider the mmod port a huge disappointment as it essentially downgrades the mod rather than improves it. and if seriously never experienced the original mod before playing the mmod version, then i feel sorry for you.
