As a Broncos fan thank you for this vid…I’m tired of seeing film breakdown vids that show 99% good things and 1% bad and gives fans of the franchise false hope they have a savior on their hands…I appreciate you for pointing out the things that can hold Bo back at the next level, while also praising him for what he does well.
You can do that with every NFL QB and especially every QB prospect.
I think Bo is the steal of the draft. Everyone thinks the Broncos reached. I don’t one bit. I’ll take an accurate, smart experienced qb over any one of those other guys. Moving the chains is what’s important. Not throwing deep balls. And in all honesty, Bo is known as a great teammate and has leadership qualities which matter more than any athletic measurable imo.
I dont know how to explain it but something about watching him just screams NFL quarterback to me. I think he'll translate to the pro game really well, potentially great pick at 12

Fully agree, I said the same thing in about two paragraphs. I'd honestly put him at the top in best chance for success of all other qb's drafted. Only thing that would knock him off top spot is the equity in upside from higher potential of Williams and Penix. But yeah, most likely to make 3-5 pro bowls or something, he's top of list for me.

payton couldn't get a nearly 40 year old man to break bad habits but he's made a career on those bad habits. Nix nearly has a clean slate for payton to work with.

@@GelatoBoiiWell, to be fair, you build an offense around the QB and their abilities. Mostly. You do not try to fit a QB into one. It rarely works. Unless, you have a Manning or Rodgers on your team.

I mean the Broncos drafted his favorite weapon Troy Franklin in the 4th round and Sean Payton is a system based, offense minded coach. I hope everything meshes together as well as it does on paper
Even if we take into consideration the other QBs Payton tried to get the most out of post Drew Brees (Bridgewater, etc.) much of the success came to the caliber of talent around the QB. Nix is going to a great OL situation to a murky one. The Broncos receiver group has depth but also not amazing. At the same time I don't think Payton was going into the 2024 training camp with Sitdham/Wilson as his QBs.

the thing i love the most about Bo is his ability to not be sacked. he had something like 5 sacks in 500 dropbacks or something in his last year. That is so telling for a prospect it shows he can:
1) read defenses
2) set/understand protections
3) quick release
4) get the ball to his playmakers
5) injury avoidance
6) build trust with coaches and teammates
7) not giving away field position/downs
all of those traits are transferable to the NFL.
Great analysis once again. Lots of ESPN talking heads were claiming he was a dink and dunk passer but last I checked he was 3rd in yards per completion. Will be fun to see how he works out!
Reminds me a lot of brock Purdy great anticipation and going through progressions can extend plays and has a strong enough arm

Exactly what I've always thought. Brock wasn't considered much before Shanahan. The right coaching and playmaking will make the best of QB's talent to make a difference.
He's a bigger, stronger, and faster version of Purdy. Better arm too.
@@zachary2999 That is because Brock is essentially the kind of simple QB that Shanahan can work with. Bad teams need more out of their QB to make up for being shaky in other spots on the offense. But with the Niners offense and weapons, if Brock can read the field as fast as Jimmy G did to take the easy middle field passes then that is good. But Brock is also aggressive going downfield and is willing to use his legs so that is a mega plus working in that offense.
Best timing and best accuracy in this class. Broncos got a steal imo.

Good analysis. With the comparison the 1983 QB draft with this years, it will be interesting to see which ones will be future HOFers, multi-year starters, and dudes. Even after this, NFL scouts can't guarantee that a future QB is a sure thing.
Great review. This is why I believe sitting him will only benefit his game play. I do think he has some of the true qualities Payton designs his type of offense around and the two will be succesful in the years to come however I'm not expecting it to be great as soon as he steps on the field. A little time will go a long way with Bo.

I like the assessment and the video is quality content. I have a different perspective though on his “anticipation”. For example, Nix doesn’t anticipate the wr making the cut; Nix reads the defense and “anticipates” the hole in the zone and throws it to a “spot”. The wr from OU reads and anticipates defense the same as Nix. They trust and know each other.
I think Payton is out to let ppl find out what f’kn around with him is all about. Brees to Thomas all day long building a defense out to kill with his guys. Payton’s ppl buy in and he wins. He is a killer. He has a real chance to kill with Nix.

After watching every game at Oregon and most of his tape at Auburn...there is no enigma imo...the "enigma" part is bias from the media creeping into our evaluations...the film speaks for itself. Bo has a chance to be a GREAT quarterback

Hate Payton, but I'm excited to see what he does in their offense. He's got some really great physical attributes..... and that fast release is INSANE.
Watching this man in auburn I never thought he would be here today. Shows how the portal is also a good thing for the game. It needs to be reworked but It gets too much hate sometimes. For every kid that bounces around looking for playing time you find a player completely flip the narrative of their career and go pro.
It also shows Bo coming back from adversity. He knew he didn't live up to the caliber of QB he thought he could be at Auburn. Fresh start at oregon and played elite football for 2 years.

I think the criticism is fair. There were a number of multi read plays (I wouldn't say it was zero as you said). He does tend to take the first read if it is open though and it usually was open. I see his deep ball as needing work, but it isn't terrible. I think one of the issues he has with the deep ball is he usually prefers to touch pass where he needs to bullet more often. Being accurate on a touch pass is pretty difficult as the ball is just in the air for so long while the receiver is covering ground. Do you agree?
Especially with nfl defenses still using the 2 high safety's Nix can leave throwing short to medium throws all the way down the field, but with the broncos offense and heavy run game it'll open up the deep shots which I feel he is underrated in that aspect of the game.

Dan Lanning is a defensive coach. The OC in Oregon is a man named Will Stein. He's also the QB coach. He should be a name to watch, considering the work he did with Bo.
I'm new to scouting players, this is the first year I tried to look through 200+ players before the draft. That said, my assessment of Nix that wasn't touched on here was that he can have some great accuracy and ball placement on the run but can really whiff in the pocket. To me, that shows that he has some high level ability, but it would be ideal if he was drafted into a Penix type situation where he could rebuild his footwork and, as you said, break his bad habits. He really has the tools to be a great QB in my opinion (although the lack of pocket presence truly worries me), but he's going to a situation where he has to start right away. To me, that adds up to another high ceiling player who will likely bust because they weren't developed properly.
I think he's very NFL ready, especially that offense. Not saying your wrong, but have never noticed poor foot-work from him remotely, I guess I'll keep an eye out. The 'not having enough experience going through progressions" I guess is related argument for not being ready, but not sure there's a good solution there besides live reps.
Good breakdown. I personally believe Nix has the tools to be a franchise QB, and he is going to prove alot of doubters wrong. He has the "it" that alot of scouts and analysts miss but that every great QB has. The vast majority of throws in the NFL are short to intermediate. And contrary to popular belief, Nix can throw the deep ball.

If the QB reads well, he knows before the snap what's his best option is. Yes?
And sometimes the defense defeats the play. Then, you want the QB to move out of the pocket, take another look at a broken-play opportunity or tuck and run. Right?

The ability to need to read post snap is greatly reduced by the type of plays called. If you do not call plays that require your qb to full field scan and actually go through progressions, I cannot grade that. The Ducks did this incredibly rarely.
Improv and extension do not count as progressions to me as they take place outside the structure of the play - in the NFL, progressions mean winning from the pocket.
In terms of behind the line improvising, Nix would be 3rd in this draft, not number 1.
Bo Nix is gonna wind up being the 2nd best QB of the class as a rookie after Caleb Williams. He has NFL traits and he's going into a perfect scheme for his strengths. I don't have that many questions about Bo Nix honestly, he's a prototypical west coast offense QB in an era where the descendants of the Bill Walsh tree west coast scheme are dominating football. When he followed the script at Oregon he was excellent, and when he improvised and deviated from the script, he was also excellent.

Bo Nix is an average QB who played a very easy schedule and whose team could just out talent every defense they played.

To be fair JJ is also sitting out for at least a year (and a half) or so. Payton is throwing Nix to the fire regardless of who he has on the Broncos roster on offense.
I feel like the Broncos for their own sake just did not feel comfortable not picking Nix after Penix was picked. I feel like Nix will be way more coachable than Wilson but it will definitely come to hiding Nix’s flaws more than anything.
I say all the time on this channel how much I prefer rookie QBs to sit, but man, if the broncos are starting Zach Wilson in week 1, something went horribly wrong.

Problem is he's going to Sean in Denver NOT N.O. The last three games with QB Stinham (sp?) The Broncos ran a lot of 4-5 receiver air-raid plays with sprinkles of Payton's system mixed in. I know the Broncos can not help themselves, and will want to see a lot of "take the top off the defense" (Shurmur ball) which their offense is in noway capable of running.

I don't know a lot about Daniels, Maye, or even Williams so much, but initial impressions were not particularly impressed by Daniels. Caleb obviously has a lot of ugly qualities similar to Baker and Wilson; not staying on schedule and bailing too early, hard habits to break.... few can outrun 4.5 ends even late into their 20's... at pro level so he's going to have to step up A LOT more in the future. Maye again, I don't know enough to have an opinion. Anyway, both Penix and Nix were just really impressive and sharp in both meetings.
If Washington had played even anywhere close to how they did against Oregon in the national championship I think they would have won comfortably; it wasn't just the D causing the issues, Penix was just OFF and missing wide open guys he hits at 85% plus. Anyway yeah Nix, odds are against any given qb succeeding, but I think Nix has a very good chance to be good. Processing form and release all seem very good, this is exactly what Broncos needed, unless the league has truly neutralized Paytons quick attack offense, I find it hard to imagine NIx not succeeding. ***Of all the qb's, and again no knowledge on Maye, I actually think I'd put Nix highest on the list in likelihood of success, *** Williams and Penix maybe matching for highest ceilings.

I think the overwhelming amount of positive plays and completion percentage ends up putting Bo Nix into a favorable position in the NFL. He has one of the best creative coaching minds that he can learn from and will show that he is a consistent quarterback at the pro level. I think his first season will be a strange and questionable one. He will most likely throw more interceptions than he ever did in college but he will have to show resiliency throughout his career.

It’s hard to ever analyze an Oregon QB because the system is so QB friendly. Bo while good on the run, does escape the pocket too fast and also gets away with bad throws when throwing across his body. He also does lack the ability right now to see pressure and throws picks because he panics. I think he has a good but not elite arm which is well good enough for the NFL in a west coast system like what he will be in for the broncos. After watching Purdy, you do not need a good arm or traits to be successful if everything around you is working, you just need to have the skill to anticipate where your player will be open and be able to go off script when needed. Bo at least has an NFL arm and has a higher ceiling so we will see. He also has intermediate accuracy issues which you also saw from Herbert in Oregon.
I don’t care what any if the pro analyst say. I’m not an Oregon fan(Wildcat Az) but they drafted the best QB in that draft.
His progression abilities mid play are impossible to evalute and his weaknesses are there....... his ability to read pre snap and throw with anticipation tho, that seems to be one of the biggest issues young QB's have to overcome. So as a coach like Peyton whos offense is built on anticipation throws he might be in the perfect fit.... can't say the same if he went elsewhere....... that's why Wilson struggled, hed hold the ball, or scramble and try to make big plays too often.
Love the analysis but Kurt Warner came out and said he was the only one after watching film who offensive scheme translated to the NFL.

If he thinks running 20 RPOs a game and 1 read and run deep shots translates - he's either not watched enough NFL recently, or not watched enough Bo Nix tape.

If I remember correctly, outside the RPOs, some of the route concepts and indicators of coverage in the offense he ran at Oregon translated. Imma work on the finding the link. Again, killer work my guy.

I think the quick game, both accuracy and reading both very much translate, plus the anticipation is great - I just don't know how to grade someone's harder NFL reads and progressions if they aren't asked to do it

The ravens offense is infinitely more complex than the Oregon Offense and required progressions and down field reads consistently, their run game was also substantially more complex
Practitioners aren't always the best at explaining their own craft - remember we had multiple former pros claiming Zach Wilson was the next big thing or Bryce was better than Stroud, and they were all wrong - if either Chase or Kurt wants to watch every game of his 23 season with me and discuss it I'm more than happy to have them on the channel to discuss what they think I missed

Don’t know how you can claim he wasn’t in a pro style offense when guys like Kurt Warner and Chase Daniels said those things. I feel like there’s a lot of key components you missed. Bo was still high in air yards per attempt and his best weapon was a day 3 pick, He has shown that his greatest attributes are russels weaknesses, Russ was a play extender and struggled with reading defenses and throwing on time, that is the opposite of what Payton wants, plus his Oline is ranked top 10 and was top 10 in pass block win rate so the offense should be much more effective with the perfect qb in this draft going to the perfect system for him. No other rookie qb fits a scheme more this year than Bo and it’s not close.
Because running 15-20 RPOs and screens a game is not a pro style offense
The team that ran the most RPOs a game last season in the NFL was the Eagles and that was at less than 6 a game (and they were a boring stagnant offense)
I think he's a great fit for Sean Payton, and think he's got a great chance to succeed - I just can't evaluate what's not there

Was the scheme he ran at Auburn more akin to a pro scheme, and if so, how did he seem to handle it? From what I remember, he was very hot and cold. Also, his Auburn tape may be a better example of how he looks behind a suspect line. I seem to recall a few games getting ugly for him.
He’s nowhere near the Quarterback he was at Auburn and Oregon’s scheme was more like what he’s going to run obviously but…literally completely changed, and transferred his good attributes from Auburn over. I dont think it’s fair to compare Auburn Bo Nix to Broncos Bo Nix. Broncos had an overhated O-line because Wilson pranced into so many sacks and pressure…and the line also improved this offseason.
Bo Nix was good enough to go in the top 10. Don’t get it twisted JJ still isn’t a top 10 worthy pick. Yea you draft on potential but majority of those picks are really damn good in college. Jj wasn’t insane and even in 2022 he wouldn’t beat out Kenny

Honestly watching this, I think he will end up as a Joe Flacco who can evade the pocket, ending up in the position Jared Goff is in where we question if he is truly elite, even with great numbers, for the rest of his career
Outside of the other rookie QBs who won't be starting this season, it will be interesting to see how Caleb, Jayden and Bo Nix handle NFL blitzes and pressures. Especially since many DCs are finding some success throwing sim pressure blitz looks at young QBs.
First off, his name is Caleb. 2nd off, Caleb’s cockiness (in the NFL draft if you watched it) I’m not a fan of. He’s kinda a showboater that thinks he’s all that. He’s shown no humility or humbleness. At least to the cameras. The way he acts is just kind of a red flag to me. The biggest red flag really.
And Caleb threw 7 interceptions in a row today or yesterday in practice and was benched for the day.
Oregon qbs scare me because of the scheme.

The only people who do not like Bo are those who are caught up on his Auburn time . Auburn runs a dumb offense. Mix is fine. he will be a hard QB to deal with in the NFL because he can run faster than most WRs. So his legs will help him get past the learning curve. He could very easy become the best QB of the 2024 class because Caleb Williams sure as hell is not!

This was a good break down, that just ended horribly. Bo nix can’t read, yet throws 80% completion percentage? My guy, terrible take.
Both things can be true at the same time. Playing in a RPO heavy offense with one read plays leads to a high completion %. Just because he had a high completion percentage doesn't mean he made 2nd and 3rd reads correctly.
Bo has a lot of experience and snaps so he will skip over some rookie mistakes and tendencies. He’s not the most talented but very dependable.

You're not. If he dont have a deep ball anticipation wont matter. The NFL passing windows are too tight, if you cant get safetys and CB's to respect deep threats, they will sit in cover 1 or 2 and collapse on underneath routes.
@@E.J.Crunkleton Reminds me sorta of the Mac Jones conundrum in 2023. Granted there were other bad things going for the Pats offense (receivers that can't separate, injured O-line) but Mac faced the most man coverage out of any QB in that season. Defenses were daring Mac to get deep shots through and if he couldn't, they just kept the Pats offense stalled.

Tall order starting as an underclassman qb in the SEC, especially when your team has consistent talent deficits. For those reasons and the inevitable improvement I don't think you can really support the claim that he was 'just average in the SEC', every situation is just too different with that many variables.
I've been bringing up these exact points for the last 3 months, but the chorus of group think praise from fans & media pundits have been used to drown me out every time I do so. Frankly I am surprised Payton drafted Nix. In 2006 he turned down the opportunity to draft a top 1st round QB prospect despite having his choice of three who were top ten rated. Payton is not famous for liking rookie QBs. Brees, whom he had signed before the 2006 draft, was only 3 months removed from a major shoulder injury & failed is physical in Miami. He was also coming off a down year, & had only one good one on his 5 year resume. Nobody but Sean offered him a contract & Brees himself later admitted he thought his career might be over.
I trust Payton implicitly when it comes to knowing quarterbacks for his offense, but I can't ignore the fact that Nix played 4 of 5 seasons inside one of the least transferable offensive systems in college football. In his only season outside of the Gus Malzahn/Kenny Dillingham Air Raid with pace, he played poorly & was temporarily benched. He described having to make NFL type progression reads as "a nightmare". H immediately bolted to Oregon to follow Dillingham & get back to the spread concepts. I hope Payton has found his guy, but it was only a year ago that he was singing the praises of Jarrett Stidham and talking about how high is football IQ was, how intelligent he was, how he could read defenses & could process information quickly. He's not the only one. NFL players on the Raiders, 49ers & Broncos all said the same thing. There is an assumption out there that he's merely a backup. I am not at all sure we can say that since he's been behind nothing but long established, highly accomplished quarterbacks. I won't be surprised if Stidham, who played better at Auburn for Malzahn than Nix did before leaving for the NFL, is the 2024 starter when the dust clears. I think Nix has to sit for a year...not a few games.

@@sethtenrec you can say that about literally any QB prospect ever. I'm only speaking from his college film. He hasn't shown any high ceiling. Even if he does great in the NFL, it doesn't change the fact that he didn't show high ceiling in college
@@sethtenrec Big disagree on Rosen. All I heard from Rosen from his college tape was his high level processing. Which has shown jack shit translating in the NFL. Traits based picks may be a dart throw for QB but if they improve on the actual QB'ing stuff, they add so much more to their game. Besides Rosen in a short scramble situation couldn't turn what Allen does to take off and truck smaller defenders from his 6'5 240 lb frame onto a first down.

i wanted us to trade back, take QB next year. He can be decent but i just don't understand the point of a rebuild if we have a ton of holes in the roster. We could have sucked ass for a year, take a QB next year, and should have taken a lineman or edge this draft.
To be honest I thought the positive part was actually quite hopeful - that level of anticipation is special.
He's got some big holes due to scheme, that might have stunted his growth - and make it difficult to work out who he is as a prospect - and he's also got some warts like a lot of college QBs, and those i'm less hopeful about.
I think the question is - How much growth is left in a 24 year old quarterback who's been playing in an RPO offense for 5 straight years?
With good coaching, maybe there's an abundance, but also, he might have just reached his ceiling.

When you talked about him not being good at throwing downfield you only showed his 6 or 7 misses throughout the season. His downfield connect rate was excellent

I agree with you that lots of Bo's throws were wide open - but it's difficult to deny the throws I showed are anticipation - that throw to Franklin over the middle levels is elite.
And I also agree with you - we need to see more progressions, but I can't grade what's not there

1st
First of all, breaking down 'highlights' is not a real film study. From looking at tape as a defensive coordinator / player's perspective, instead of that of a fan, we look at series after series to get the full story. Sure, Bo Nix has enough attributes to put together a highlight reel but, what does a 'true' film study show? What I saw was a lot of inconsistency during a game, that worries me. Oddly enough, there were some 'Russell Wilson' tendencies like predetermining too many targets, starring down receivers, and not going through reads on a consistent level, considering his offensive line was one of the better ones in the country. Also, too many tuck and run bailing out of clean pocket moments for my liking. Oregon faced some of college's worst defenses in the PAC 12 so, when he goes to the NFL and to a team that has a very inconsistent o-line in Denver, how will those inconsistencies play out? I think this is a guy that still needs work before he is thrown into the NFL day one. The Broncos will not be patient and per the usual, will throw him in too soon with unrealistic expectations that will most likely cut his NFL career short.
