  • This video is a step by step demonstration on how to construct a 3D Epoxy Floor. We go through all the steps of applying the floor like
    1. Sticking the poster
    2. Eliminating trapped air and wrinkles
    3. Mixing the resin
    4. Applying the resin and eliminating defects

Welcome to this video by Learn Coatings. Today I'm going to show you how to apply a 3D Epoxy floor. This is an example we did on a piece of wood, so what you would do on a floor would be obviously much larger in scale, but here's how we did it. First, you find a nice 3D picture like this one, you apply glue and you stick it to the board, you make sure that your substrate is nicely clean, smooth, substrate, primed and on top you stick it. Now once you stick it on top, you need to make sure that no air will be trapped underneath the poster, otherwise you will have all sorts of problems with the wrinkles. So, what we do here is, we gently make sure that the entire poster is well stick properly to the substrate. Now, you will burn into wrinkles this is part of this does happen, if you do find wrinkles just use a blow dryer to dry the wood, dry the glue underneath so it'll be easier to sort of stretch it out and fix any wrinkles that may appear. You need to be patient maybe work with someone who's experienced in applying wallpaper tapestries and slowly you can just apply, here's an example of a wrinkle we have that's just take your time and slowly apply the wall paper so the wrinkles don't show up. Because if you do have wrinkles, that will also affect the final coating. So, it's very important that you don't have any wrinkles when you are applying the 3D Poster. keep in mind, use something soft to press the poster down so that you don't run into problems. And once the poster has dried to the substrate, then you can proceed to the next step which is actually mixing the resin. So, mix the resin for one or two minutes, and then you can pour this mixture on top of the 3D floor. Make sure that you spread it properly with a tool so the resin goes in everywhere and there's a itself levels everywhere. You don't want to put too little because if you put too little you'll get bubbles you will get fish eyes, if you get too much you might get yellowing in some parts. The main thing is make sure it goes everywhere then you can use a blow dryer to eliminate bubbles or a spiked roller or whatever you prefer, be gentle. I found your video interesting. There is such a thing as heavy vinyl floor mural. You method is attractive to this DIYer because the heavy vinyl floor mural can act as a crack isolation sheet which prevents ghosting or can be used to hide a botched job. Then epoxy can be poured on top: the spiked shoes cannot be used except on the second and subsequent coats.

Has anyone ever tried something like this in their van? I am wanting to do this to my floor over a tapestry. How long will it take to harden properly and will I have fumes to worry about for long?
