Watched this and thought "that's ridiculous". 1 week later, ordered one. Wife saw it and said "that's ridiculous". Then she wanted one. Next thing you know, I've ordered 15 of them and have been handing them out as Christmas gifts! Thanks +Techmoan for making me realize I needed something I never knew existed.

I've got a similar cable and it consumes 200mA for the light. So I wouldn't recommend using them with a powerbank if you're worried about running out of battery.

I like that the UK wall outlets have the on/off switch built in, nice feature.
Hahaha, Android phones do that for years now with a charging light on the notification LED (Red/Orange: Charging, Green: Fully charged).

Depends on the phone, it's not a standard feature. Low end phones like the Core Prime for example, won't nessicarily have it.
+TheTurnipKing Is the Core Prime an LG or Motorola phone? Haven't heard of it.
Until now, every Samsung, HTC and Oneplus phone I've seen has that "feature", even though I wouldn't call it a feature since it has been around for years

USB doesn't start and end with Smartphones. Do not forget that a lot of people own devices other than smartphones that also use USB to charge. This cable might (or might not) be useful for indicating charge level for these devices. Three action cameras were shown as an example in the video however there are a multitude of other devices charged via USB ....such as Action Cameras, Compact Cameras, Game Controllers, Bluetooth Headphones, Bluetooth Speakers etc

maybe he could use more different muppets although this grumpy green one obviously depicts himself being the moan-side of techMOAN :D The way they're used every now and then suits well and the ratio of screentime techmoan/muppet shouldn't change. Its perfectly informative and has a funny twist/extra by using the muppet.
Actually it depicts half the commentors on his videos who don't watch his videos completely and always say the weirdest things.

Serious question: Have you tried it with a Qualcomm QC2.0 quick charger (Galaxy phones etc)? Wondering if it "moves" even quicker.
I have definitely noticed the lights move at a few different speeds when charging different devices with different chargers. It's something worth experimenting with.
could be a resistance value that changes the speed of the lights
QC 2.0 and 3.0 can run at high voltages might even kill the cable

Possibly, but I can't imagine they didn't design it with 9/12V in mind . All they need is a 5V Zener Diode to regulate the voltage going into the power supply for the LEDs.
It could just be a chip that controls the lights by watching the current draw.

I remember I used to have some of the old led usb cables where the plug simply lit up.
Still useful since it made plugging additional things in behind the pc easier.

I'm glad you demo'd it on one of those Anker USB charging banks because I have one of them...and makes me want one even more.
They are nice and can handle up to 2A each port. We take it on trips as even my Sony camera charges via USB.

I had one of these a while back. I am not sure of the brand but it only lasted for about 6 to 8 months. It was a cool idea at the time.
Hello Techmoan, great video as always. I was wondering if they made these types of cables for the newer USB-C standard. I have a OnePlus Two phone and having an EL cable would make things so much easier for me.

I've found quite a difference between USB cables, in that some charge at around 1600mA at best, whilst others can be as low as 400mA - despite using the same power source. Do you know how this cable performs, and can you recommend a USB cable that might give the 2amp charge that some smartphones and tablets need?

These disappeared off the market in Australia. Target carried them but I suspect the step up electronics died pretty often. I have one and it seems to be picky about what it will charge - occasionally the lights will come on and then go off again in short order.

This is a really *_bright_* idea.
I had gotten a version of that cable that had a 3 way connector at the charging end. The connector pretty much broke within a couple of days. Its a great idea but the quality can sometimes be shotty.

I had one of these (different brand) and the HV inverter in the USB plug got really warm. So warm that the housing melted... Pretty fantastic cable othereise
I bought one of these last year and had about a months use out of it before the EL wires died. Then I was just a bulky standard lead.
I think my mistake was leaving it switched on for 24/7. If you get one, unplug after use.
Oh plus the thick portion of the cable tends to run hot in normal use....
Thankfully someone on amazon posted images of opened / fallen apart versions of this cable. Also lots of 1 star reviews that all have the same electromechanical complaints.
Looks great, but I'm not going to buy this cable.
Furthermore, I would love to have see you do a capacity test on USB cables. On how much current it's capable to pass to the device. That's the most important feature of a good charge cable.

So cool! I want one! Also, I would imagine the cable would just draw it's own current in addition to the current the device being charged is drawing (assuming the device doesn't draw the maximum current that the wall power supply can provide) meaning it shouldn't take any longer to charge?
I got one of these and it is cool, though it was one of the cheaper ones, the end with the high voltage converter started coming apart, and the connection on the other side got unreliable (for the 4th gen iphone). The cable is the exact same style though, so maybe it's the same people that did it.
This seems to be a higher quality one, might be worth picking one up again sometime, I'm not sure.
