excellent comparison between the most used brands, personally I lean towards BP51, it is what I have mounted on my 2017 cue and it has given me a very smooth ride, it is very progressive and it holds the weight well. Greetings from Costa Rica.
We're running the BP51 on our own Tacoma at the moment and agree, i dont think there's another shock out there that can go as soft as these can due to the rebound adjustment.
Fyi, sounded like you got the high speed compression and low speed compression mixed up and I heard an incorrect statement about Rebound, so just want to help clarify for anyone confused... The 'return' action, Rebound, is how fast the shock can extend back out to full extension. Too fast rebound and you will bounce off things like a pogo stick and is potentially pretty dangerous because you're just letting the spring extend freely. You can also set it too slow so then instead of going back to extension for the next hit, it stays where it is at and the next hit compresses it further until it bottoms and gets really uncomfortable. High speed compression is multiple fast succession bumps - like going 60 over waterboards. You'll want to have your HS rebound fairly quick so the shock doesn't pack up and bottom, but not so fast you are just letting the spring shoot you back up. Low Speed compression is resisting slow acting forces like weight transfer from acceleration or braking, g-outs, whoops and other things like that. Some shocks include high speed and low speed rebound so you can independently tune them to each condition which is real handy for eliminating that packing and bouncing in all scenarios. Seriously just trying to help, not throwing any stones. I've been tuning Fox MTB coils and forks for about 20 years and figured I'd try and help clarify. I'd also think about explaining digressive, progressive and linear dampening methods. You touched on it, but it could use some more coverage since this is the number 1 thing you 'feel' immediately after putting them on the car and hitting your first bump.
I was debating changing out the rear shocks for coil overs in addition to the leaf springs. This is mainly for towing to avoid the rear of the truck from squatting.
Stick to the rear shock as it is and just upgrade the rear leaf. Unless you're building this to really off-road, doing a rear coilover or IFS swap isn't necessary.

ive got the BP51s in my double cab Tundra, set the rebound level to 4... and the compresion level to 2 in the front and 3 in the back... i feel like modern day Aladdin... its like a magic carpet really.
Great to hear! We really think those BP51s do not get the credit they deserve. Where everybody else is trying to mimic race level performance with their high end dampers, the OME decided to make a killer "trail oriented" shock instead, and we definitely love them for it.
@@Bryce2987 Yup. That IFS with bypass is pretty sweet, the solid axle rear will probably always behave like a solid axle on certain hits no matter what shock is installed.
great review info. I know nothing about shocks but after this I really do feel like I have a much better idea about this popular upgrade. in my case the Bilstein 6112's as a first-time suspension upgrade.
I have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma, 4x4 v6, 96k miles on OEM shocks. The low miles is it is our second rig, our recreational and going to the dump vehicle, and don’t use it for off-roading, but for the occasional camping and ski trips. I want to replace the shocks and struts. We just purchased a 3500 pound trailer, 400 pound tongue weight. I’ve been to your website and am impressed by the extensive offerings, but for a regular guy like me it’s a bit overwhelming - kinda like going to a Chinese food restaurant for the first time and trying to pick from 93 menu offerings. Given my used and needs, do you have a few suggestions for me? I really want to work with you all, but I need a few choices to review with my wife (an engineer) to keep her in the loop (happy wife, happy life). Thank you so much!
haha love the analogy, thanks for the feedback. You could go with the Bilstein aftermarket option replacement, they're a bit better than the factory Bilstein, and should last just as long. I got it installed a while ago now. It added about 1.5-2ish inches in height. I also upgraded to 33inch BF Goodrich KM3 mud terain tires from les schwab, which added another 1.5ish inches of height. I paid 4WP to do the installation for me. There was a laundry list of fixes they wanted me to do before they would touch it. The most expensive one was getting a new steering rack, which I got from the dealership. As for costs, I don't have exact numbers (it was a while ago. These are approximates.) Tires-----‐-----‐----------------------------$2K Steering rack + other repairs- $3.5K Suspension kit------------------------$3.5K Labor---‐----------------------------------$1.5K TOTAL---$10.5K -ish

So… I see that you showed a rolling hills(washboard) but what do you call the typical washboard you see from acceleration on dirt cause that will be fast for the shock and do the shock handle those well?
Just curious what u recommend for back shocks when U upgrade the bilstein 6112’s?? Also do u recommend upgrading upper control arms when moving up to bilsteins? I have 2019 stock off road Tacoma with small upgraded front bumper that I may add a winch to in near future.

I currently have Boss Toytec coil over reservoir and I’m not totally excited with highway performance. I’m just a weekend warrior that just camps. I don’t need a shock to handle heavy duty off road , just access roads to dispersed camping. What shock would you suggest out of all these you showed ? My guess would be Bilstein 6112. Thanks
We don't know how to Toytec feels as we don't carry their product line so we can't give a direct comparison. However, from our experience Bilstein is a good starting point for daily driving and entry level off-roading. Great for those looking for something to still using while driving around but want to have some capable to off-road a bit. There are different parts we would suggest if you do want to go more off-roading or more desert driving and etc.
It's really up to you and what you want out of everything. It's literally brand new truck. Some people replacement right away as their building an off-road rig while some keep it on for a while to enjoy a stock setup.
My Kings saved my ass coming down a steep grade Mountain pass on the interstate a couple weeks ago… no doubt… pulling a 6x12 full of industrial sewing machines behind my Tacoma…. Shit went wild at 85, but them kings kept me upright and alive…

I have a 2012 tacoma 4x4 double cab. Have an older procomp stage II 6 inch lift . Looking at upgrading the coils and struts. Any recommendation? I do 70% road and 30% off-road trails.
OME BP51 give you the most adjustment features to really fine tune the comfort. You get an internal bypass, external reservoir, and rebound and low speed compression adjustment. There's also a new set up we started to create content and putting them vehicles is SDI. They make an electronic adjustment version that you can control within your vehicle with their dial. They offer a Trail, Street, and Desert options. On top of that, you can go further and adjust various driving adjustment like Pitch, Roll, Turn, Throttle, and Brake sensitivities.

Really Tossing around a lot of ideas here, Either the Fox Racing Series 2.5 DSC or the ICONs 2.5 with the CDCV, this toss up is mostly because of cost and if I am actually going to adjust them as much as I need too. 2023 Tacoma TRD Off-Road... will be going with a 33 inch tire... Decisions... Decisions... Mostly camping and wheeling with the buds... little bit of crawling and going through the woops at speed.... don't know what to do! lol
the adjustments are pretty easy on both, the fox 2.5 will feel a tad softer during the daily drive. The Bilstein 6112 + 5160 combo is a good budget option that can take similar abuse, especially paired with some timbren offroad bumpstops to help with the hard hits
For the name "kings" I think they should have thr adjustments like the fox, yet the ave those internal hydraulic bump stop or zone control like those bilstein B8
Fox holds a patent on the DSC feature they offer. We heard that the patent might be up soon and if so, more companies will offer the same feature or even better. Bilstein 8112 announce their new version back at a Sema 2022, low and high-speed compression and JCO or the internal bump stop adjustment.
Trying to decide on fox 2.5 DSC elite performance vs factory race. Living in Arizona I do daily driving in my Tacoma during weekdays and high speed off roading on weekends. Do the updated changes in the elite performance series make it worth going with new technology compared to old reliable factory series?
Both are great options are are made slightly differently but provide about the same functionality. The main thing is Factory series is a steel body and the Performance elite is an Aluminum body. There are differences on the valve, seals, and other components but both will act about the same when you're using them. The performance elite is using Fox new technology for their components.

Our boss, Sean Reyes, had them on his 2006 Toyota Tacoma for quite a while. He went with the stage 8 which provided pretty everything. These a good option for daily driving and more like technical off-roading. He has swapped to OME BP51 for more comfort control.

I have a 2016 Tacoma and it’s mostly a road truck I use it for camping and taking the bikes to the track but really enjoy the look of a lift on my truck I’m running 33” right now with a ruff Country lift . I think it’s a 4” lift the ride is really choppy on the road . I would like your advise on what I should replace it with considering I still would like to be able to get it into under ground parking and for it to still fit in the garage. Thanks

The TRD Pro Fox are a 2.5 coilover series with an internal bypass. The aftermarket Fox 2.5 do not have the internal by pass but you will get their DSC and reservoir. If you want the same internal bypass with adjustment feature, the closest thing we can do is OME BP51 which have the internal bypass, external reservoir, rebound and low speed compression adjustment.

Any full coilover setup and rear shocks that come in that cheap are almost certainly imported twin tube shocks with a tiny piston. Mammoth's own site doesn't give any specifics on twintube or monotube or piston size, which makes us wonder if they really care about suspension and the current field of competition (its stacked). We bet they ride terrible, like most twin tube shocks with inadequate rebound damping for the 2" lift.
We assume you have a Tacoma. We can push this more to focused on street driving or desert. Jumping a truck isn't ideal unless invest in like 3.0 or long travel and custom parts to maximize your travel.
I have an ome heavy kit right now on my 05 Tacoma, heavy Dakar leafs, heavy front and rear suspension and it’s just too rough as I only have an arb bumper and winch up front are rarely carry extra weight… I every day drive the truck but also drive on the sand and on trails quite often, what would you recommend? I was thinking about removing a leaf and maybe trying different coil springs to keep it cheap but if you could offer some advice I would appreciate it! Great video!
The main difference between the heavy dakars and the standard is the number of leafs so you should be able to pull a leaf for a softer ride as well as come down to a softer coil spring in the front. That said the Nitrochargers in that kit are not known for riding great, so it may be a good idea to do a full switch on everything to something tuned a little softer. Otherwise you can just load up a few sand bags or other heavy items to get some weight into it and soften things up.
Truthfully the 6112s probably are the best shock at speed and over the big stuff at their price point. Bilstein does not make 6112 rear shocks however the 5160s pair really well with just about any leaf pack, and especially ones designed to offset constant load. We have had really great luck with the Icon RXT leaf springs with those parts now and they can be set up perfectly to offset 300-500lbs or more of constant load.

The extended travel coilovers offer more travel and can safely be set for more lift, but require aftermarket upper control arms. The real difference internally is the standard travel models have an extra spacer to limit how far they extend as to not cause bind or contact the stock upper arms. So since they are effectively the same part either with or without a little aluminum puck on the inside, price on the parts themselves are the same, however the extended travel parts will always be more expensive in the long run as they will require you to upgrade your UCA. With that said, if you are looking at a 2.5" body shock like the Icons, you really should already have a UCA planned anyway

It's all personal preference. Both are great options. It's really what you're looking to get out the suspension. Our top two leaf packs are Icon RXT and Deaver Expedition series.
Is it okay to run Fox 2.5 with remote reservoirs on the front and Fox 2.0 with remote reservoirs on the rear of a 2020 Tacoma? Or should I go 2.5's all around?
Depends on your goals but if you like to keep it stock height go Bilstein 4600s, otherwise if you would not mind a little lift go Eibach Pro Truck Sports
Love what Ian is doing with that! We've been aggressively testing Tacoma shocks and many other vehicles for a while now. We put thousands of miles on each shock to understand it in all environments, from numerous perspectives and drivers. We put out our Tacoma video 5 years ago now after 12 years of ownership at that point, and have driven on every shock in this video extensively, not to mention some newer top of the line options in the last couple years. We started with unbiased shock education in 2012, glad others are joining up.
Which one would you recommend for a 99 Toyota Tacoma extended cab? I'm not looking for anything extreme off road More along the line of moderate if there's such a thing as lol.. currently my truck is stock and I'm wanting to lift it at least 3 inches and I'm considering running 35's. We run Fox on one of our own Tacoma but he has custom rear Fox 2.5 DSC as he did a mount relocation. Both a good options. Really depends on what you're trying to do.
Any flat ground universal style coil spring that is 14" long and 3" in ID will work on the Tacomas, 4Runners, FJs and GXs. They are fine all the way up to the top notch, however most 700 lb coils should be paired with 1/8" thick spacer over the bump stops to avoid coil bind
Hello, I have a question: I have a lift ( with blocks) of 4” in the front and 2” on the back on a 2016 tacoma trd sport 4x4 . The ride is rough. It’s not as comfortable as I would like it. (I bought with the current lift it has). I would like to change the suspension so the ride feels better and I’ve been looking on coil over options. I don’t know much about what’s needed to be done, I’m new on this and im wondering if you can give me an advise. I don’t use the truck for off-roading. I just use it for normal use, streets and freeways. I just want it to have a smoother ride. Any advise is well appreciated thank you.
That is a drop bracket lift so things are a little different, but we can definitely get you a set of Fox 2.0 snap rings and rear shocks that will be a lot softer and easier to live with. The truck has already been modified passed the point of returning back to stock easily, since they likely had to cut the front crossmember for the lift so options are limited, but that combo should certainly help.

I just barely started looking into replacing the shocks on my 2018 2.7L 4cyl Tacoma. So I’m not looking for anything too crazy and I don’t wanna make it look like it’s a 4x4, just something simple but great for driving around town and some crappy roads. Anybody else been/is in a similar situation?
we hear ya, lots of budget friendly and simple replacement options. Take a look at KYB Gas-a-just, or Bilstein 4600 if you want a bit of a sportier ride.
Tacoma shocks not compatible directly, but the same behaviors here for the Tacoma apply to the Hilux, meaning the valving profiles are generally the same across brands. King is softer than Fox out of the box, etc.
those shocks can do pretty good work. they're comfortable on-road, and can take some good hits offroad. If you want to go much faster offroad, then yes an upgrade will be in order to gain some more wheel travel. Otherwise better to rebuild them like new and keep em ($800ish) rather than buying brand new to achieve bigger results ($3k+).
If you just want to be able to drive down the road without slowing for things like pot holes, dips, or speed bumps you really do not need to go crazy. I would just go for something simple that does not require a ton of service like the Eibach Stage 2 kits with their 2.0 coilovers and shocks. Then I might consider something like an Icon 51100 progressive add a leaf to bring the rear up a bit for more bump travel and some additional bottom out support. The rear ends of these Tacos sit real close to the bump stops and the semi "digressive" nature of the stock leaf springs means the back can crash and buck pretty hard. That add a leaf will net you more height and in turn more distance from the bump stops and provide more progressive support at the end of your travel to keep you from bottoming out or bucking the rear as easily.
Leaning towards the Old Man Emu set for 1st gen Tacoma. Have Fabtec now and it wore out with 90k on it, super rough and upredictable drive. Need and Old Man Emu sponsor. Lol
Both are their pros and cons. It's mainly the features they offer and/or the customer options that you can add. Also if you're not building the truck for extreme off-roading and racing, then 3.0 are pretty much really overkill.

Jeff was running the off the shelf 2015 Toyota Tacoma Fox 2.5 DSC in the front and rear (since then, he's now on customer Fox 2.5 for his LT kit and custom longer rear shock). They were honestly not bad at all for the street. Definitely feel more of the street imperfections but it felt a bit more smooth and comfort. However he was running 35s at the time (since then he's not on 37s lol and eventually wants to do 40s), which may play a roll in the overall comfort as well. But for us, we think it's a solid set up for daily but really shines in off-roading.
HELP - I have a 2012 TRD TX BAJA, replacement shocks i found are all discontinued. Fronts are 60mm progressive valving and 50mm remote resevoir in rear...... Im sure im missing something but what would be replacements that are available? Its my wife's, more a street rig for her but want to keep it as close to stock ride with the new shocks for her?? Sure those are basically Bilstein 6112s and 5160s which should be adjustable from a few tenths of an inch over stock height in the front up to around 2-2.5" of lift

Sean's white Tacoma has Pro Comp 34 Series wheels in a 17x8.5 ET0 (4.75" BS) with 285/70R17 tires. Jeff's grey Tacoma had Level 8 Bully Pros in a 16x8.5 ET0 (4.75" BS). Some of the clips Jeff is running a 295/75R16 and in others he has a 315/75R16.
Whats the softest ride? I have a bad back and want to drive on a cloud. 99% on road and just a normal daily driver. 2001 tacoma supercharged. No jumps or anything crazy
Old Man Emu BP51 have been the absolute softest shock we've been on, since you can adjust the compression and rebound extremely soft. Granted, they're also one of the most expensive at $3k/set. Other route may be the Fox 2.0 with a custom front spring (easily done). Custom tuned Kings are top notch but most $$ Softest budget shock we know of would be the KYB Excel-G, more like $300/set.

Got Acctune adjustable Kings on mine and it was the best decision I made for upgrades on the 3rd Gen Tacoma TRD Off Road.

Stick to the rear shock as it is and just upgrade the rear leaf. Unless you're building this to really off-road, doing a rear coilover or IFS swap isn't necessary.

ive got the BP51s in my double cab Tundra, set the rebound level to 4... and the compresion level to 2 in the front and 3 in the back... i feel like modern day Aladdin... its like a magic carpet really.
Great to hear! We really think those BP51s do not get the credit they deserve. Where everybody else is trying to mimic race level performance with their high end dampers, the OME decided to make a killer "trail oriented" shock instead, and we definitely love them for it.
B8112 gets my vote. Have those paired with 5160's on a GX. Went out to Oceano Dunes and the frontend was butter.

@@Bryce2987 Yup. That IFS with bypass is pretty sweet, the solid axle rear will probably always behave like a solid axle on certain hits no matter what shock is installed.

I have the Eibach Stage 1 and Heavy Duty OME leaf springs. They are a great combo so far.

Depends on what kind of "wheeling" BP51 are more of a overland set up while Kings are one of the top of line off-roading suspension.

I have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma, 4x4 v6, 96k miles on OEM shocks. The low miles is it is our second rig, our recreational and going to the dump vehicle, and don’t use it for off-roading, but for the occasional camping and ski trips.
I want to replace the shocks and struts. We just purchased a 3500 pound trailer, 400 pound tongue weight.
I’ve been to your website and am impressed by the extensive offerings, but for a regular guy like me it’s a bit overwhelming - kinda like going to a Chinese food restaurant for the first time and trying to pick from 93 menu offerings.

haha love the analogy, thanks for the feedback. You could go with the Bilstein aftermarket option replacement, they're a bit better than the factory Bilstein, and should last just as long.
The KYB Monomax is also pretty good for towing and handling extra weight.

I got it installed a while ago now. It added about 1.5-2ish inches in height. I also upgraded to 33inch BF Goodrich KM3 mud terain tires from les schwab, which added another 1.5ish inches of height. I paid 4WP to do the installation for me. There was a laundry list of fixes they wanted me to do before they would touch it. The most expensive one was getting a new steering rack, which I got from the dealership.
As for costs, I don't have exact numbers (it was a while ago. These are approximates.) Tires-----‐-----‐----------------------------$2K
Steering rack + other repairs- $3.5K
Suspension kit------------------------$3.5K
Labor---‐----------------------------------$1.5K

So… I see that you showed a rolling hills(washboard) but what do you call the typical washboard you see from acceleration on dirt cause that will be fast for the shock and do the shock handle those well?

We suggest running a UCA anytime you go over 2" but it's not required until you do extended travel coilovers or go over 3".
You should upgrade the front spring accordingly based on how much constant weight you have. We can help you out with that.

I don’t need a shock to handle heavy duty off road , just access roads to dispersed camping. What shock would you suggest out of all these you showed ? My guess would be Bilstein 6112.

We don't know how to Toytec feels as we don't carry their product line so we can't give a direct comparison. However, from our experience Bilstein is a good starting point for daily driving and entry level off-roading. Great for those looking for something to still using while driving around but want to have some capable to off-road a bit. There are different parts we would suggest if you do want to go more off-roading or more desert driving and etc.

It's really up to you and what you want out of everything. It's literally brand new truck. Some people replacement right away as their building an off-road rig while some keep it on for a while to enjoy a stock setup.

Which option would provide the most comfort on highways?
OME BP51 give you the most adjustment features to really fine tune the comfort. You get an internal bypass, external reservoir, and rebound and low speed compression adjustment.
There's also a new set up we started to create content and putting them vehicles is SDI. They make an electronic adjustment version that you can control within your vehicle with their dial. They offer a Trail, Street, and Desert options. On top of that, you can go further and adjust various driving adjustment like Pitch, Roll, Turn, Throttle, and Brake sensitivities.
Between the Fox 2.0 and Bilstein 6112, which is smoother on washboard roads and small bump compliance at slower speeds?
We have tested both and they both work great on washboards and fire roads at low speed.

Really Tossing around a lot of ideas here, Either the Fox Racing Series 2.5 DSC or the ICONs 2.5 with the CDCV, this toss up is mostly because of cost and if I am actually going to adjust them as much as I need too. 2023 Tacoma TRD Off-Road... will be going with a 33 inch tire... Decisions... Decisions... Mostly camping and wheeling with the buds... little bit of crawling and going through the woops at speed.... don't know what to do! lol
the adjustments are pretty easy on both, the fox 2.5 will feel a tad softer during the daily drive. The Bilstein 6112 + 5160 combo is a good budget option that can take similar abuse, especially paired with some timbren offroad bumpstops to help with the hard hits
For the name "kings" I think they should have thr adjustments like the fox, yet the ave those internal hydraulic bump stop or zone control like those bilstein B8
Fox holds a patent on the DSC feature they offer. We heard that the patent might be up soon and if so, more companies will offer the same feature or even better. Bilstein 8112 announce their new version back at a Sema 2022, low and high-speed compression and JCO or the internal bump stop adjustment.

Trying to decide on fox 2.5 DSC elite performance vs factory race. Living in Arizona I do daily driving in my Tacoma during weekdays and high speed off roading on weekends. Do the updated changes in the elite performance series make it worth going with new technology compared to old reliable factory series?
Both are great options are are made slightly differently but provide about the same functionality. The main thing is Factory series is a steel body and the Performance elite is an Aluminum body. There are differences on the valve, seals, and other components but both will act about the same when you're using them. The performance elite is using Fox new technology for their components.
What about the Toytec 2.5 boss suspension kit?

Our boss, Sean Reyes, had them on his 2006 Toyota Tacoma for quite a while. He went with the stage 8 which provided pretty everything. These a good option for daily driving and more like technical off-roading. He has swapped to OME BP51 for more comfort control.

I have a 2016 Tacoma and it’s mostly a road truck I use it for camping and taking the bikes to the track but really enjoy the look of a lift on my truck I’m running 33” right now with a ruff Country lift . I think it’s a 4” lift the ride is really choppy on the road . I would like your advise on what I should replace it with considering I still would like to be able to get it into under ground parking and for it to still fit in the garage. Thanks
We won't have any struts to replace your 4" lift kit in the front but we can get you longer rear shocks.

The TRD Pro Fox are a 2.5 coilover series with an internal bypass. The aftermarket Fox 2.5 do not have the internal by pass but you will get their DSC and reservoir. If you want the same internal bypass with adjustment feature, the closest thing we can do is OME BP51 which have the internal bypass, external reservoir, rebound and low speed compression adjustment.

What about the Mammoth coilover set that retails for about $600... not reviewed and not on your site? Curious why?
Any full coilover setup and rear shocks that come in that cheap are almost certainly imported twin tube shocks with a tiny piston. Mammoth's own site doesn't give any specifics on twintube or monotube or piston size, which makes us wonder if they really care about suspension and the current field of competition (its stacked). We bet they ride terrible, like most twin tube shocks with inadequate rebound damping for the 2" lift.
what’s an overall street/desert/jumps good shocks?
We assume you have a Tacoma. We can push this more to focused on street driving or desert. Jumping a truck isn't ideal unless invest in like 3.0 or long travel and custom parts to maximize your travel.

I have an ome heavy kit right now on my 05 Tacoma, heavy Dakar leafs, heavy front and rear suspension and it’s just too rough as I only have an arb bumper and winch up front are rarely carry extra weight… I every day drive the truck but also drive on the sand and on trails quite often, what would you recommend? I was thinking about removing a leaf and maybe trying different coil springs to keep it cheap but if you could offer some advice I would appreciate it! Great video!
The main difference between the heavy dakars and the standard is the number of leafs so you should be able to pull a leaf for a softer ride as well as come down to a softer coil spring in the front. That said the Nitrochargers in that kit are not known for riding great, so it may be a good idea to do a full switch on everything to something tuned a little softer. Otherwise you can just load up a few sand bags or other heavy items to get some weight into it and soften things up.
How do the 6112’s handle washboard and higher speed sand with some woops? How do they do as a rear with a leaf pack and 300-500lbs of extra weight?
Truthfully the 6112s probably are the best shock at speed and over the big stuff at their price point. Bilstein does not make 6112 rear shocks however the 5160s pair really well with just about any leaf pack, and especially ones designed to offset constant load. We have had really great luck with the Icon RXT leaf springs with those parts now and they can be set up perfectly to offset 300-500lbs or more of constant load.

The extended travel coilovers offer more travel and can safely be set for more lift, but require aftermarket upper control arms. The real difference internally is the standard travel models have an extra spacer to limit how far they extend as to not cause bind or contact the stock upper arms. So since they are effectively the same part either with or without a little aluminum puck on the inside, price on the parts themselves are the same, however the extended travel parts will always be more expensive in the long run as they will require you to upgrade your UCA. With that said, if you are looking at a 2.5" body shock like the Icons, you really should already have a UCA planned anyway

It's all personal preference. Both are great options. It's really what you're looking to get out the suspension. Our top two leaf packs are Icon RXT and Deaver Expedition series.

You can run them as you like but getting the full benefits from the Fox 2.5 DSC would overall give you better ride and control.

They have Bilstein twin tube shocks from the factory. All of the shocks here are an upgrade to those for the most part.

Depends on your goals but if you like to keep it stock height go Bilstein 4600s, otherwise if you would not mind a little lift go Eibach Pro Truck Sports

Love what Ian is doing with that! We've been aggressively testing Tacoma shocks and many other vehicles for a while now. We put thousands of miles on each shock to understand it in all environments, from numerous perspectives and drivers.

We run Fox on one of our own Tacoma but he has custom rear Fox 2.5 DSC as he did a mount relocation. Both a good options. Really depends on what you're trying to do.

Any flat ground universal style coil spring that is 14" long and 3" in ID will work on the Tacomas, 4Runners, FJs and GXs. They are fine all the way up to the top notch, however most 700 lb coils should be paired with 1/8" thick spacer over the bump stops to avoid coil bind

I have a lift ( with blocks) of 4” in the front and 2” on the back on a 2016 tacoma trd sport 4x4 . The ride is rough. It’s not as comfortable as I would like it.
(I bought with the current lift it has). I would like to change the suspension so the ride feels better and I’ve been looking on coil over options. I don’t know much about what’s needed to be done, I’m new on this and im wondering if you can give me an advise. I don’t use the truck for off-roading. I just use it for normal use, streets and freeways. I just want it to have a smoother ride.

That is a drop bracket lift so things are a little different, but we can definitely get you a set of Fox 2.0 snap rings and rear shocks that will be a lot softer and easier to live with. The truck has already been modified passed the point of returning back to stock easily, since they likely had to cut the front crossmember for the lift so options are limited, but that combo should certainly help.

we hear ya, lots of budget friendly and simple replacement options. Take a look at KYB Gas-a-just, or Bilstein 4600 if you want a bit of a sportier ride.
Are these compatible with hilux too?
Tacoma shocks not compatible directly, but the same behaviors here for the Tacoma apply to the Hilux, meaning the valving profiles are generally the same across brands. King is softer than Fox out of the box, etc.

those shocks can do pretty good work. they're comfortable on-road, and can take some good hits offroad. If you want to go much faster offroad, then yes an upgrade will be in order to gain some more wheel travel. Otherwise better to rebuild them like new and keep em ($800ish) rather than buying brand new to achieve bigger results ($3k+).

If you just want to be able to drive down the road without slowing for things like pot holes, dips, or speed bumps you really do not need to go crazy. I would just go for something simple that does not require a ton of service like the Eibach Stage 2 kits with their 2.0 coilovers and shocks. Then I might consider something like an Icon 51100 progressive add a leaf to bring the rear up a bit for more bump travel and some additional bottom out support. The rear ends of these Tacos sit real close to the bump stops and the semi "digressive" nature of the stock leaf springs means the back can crash and buck pretty hard. That add a leaf will net you more height and in turn more distance from the bump stops and provide more progressive support at the end of your travel to keep you from bottoming out or bucking the rear as easily.

The stage 2 would be in-between a Bilstein 5100 and Bilstein 6112 or Fox 2.0

Both are their pros and cons. It's mainly the features they offer and/or the customer options that you can add. Also if you're not building the truck for extreme off-roading and racing, then 3.0 are pretty much really overkill.

Would the fox 2.5 dsc be comfortable enough for a daily driver?
Jeff was running the off the shelf 2015 Toyota Tacoma Fox 2.5 DSC in the front and rear (since then, he's now on customer Fox 2.5 for his LT kit and custom longer rear shock). They were honestly not bad at all for the street. Definitely feel more of the street imperfections but it felt a bit more smooth and comfort. However he was running 35s at the time (since then he's not on 37s lol and eventually wants to do 40s), which may play a roll in the overall comfort as well. But for us, we think it's a solid set up for daily but really shines in off-roading.

HELP - I have a 2012 TRD TX BAJA, replacement shocks i found are all discontinued. Fronts are 60mm progressive valving and 50mm remote resevoir in rear...... Im sure im missing something but what would be replacements that are available? Its my wife's, more a street rig for her but want to keep it as close to stock ride with the new shocks for her?? Thank you
Sure those are basically Bilstein 6112s and 5160s which should be adjustable from a few tenths of an inch over stock height in the front up to around 2-2.5" of lift

@ShockSurplus I can always use a little extra kick. Let me throw this out there and see what you think. 2023 tacoma trd OR. Stock. I want to do a 3-4 inch lift, get 33's and new suspension. I primarily use my vehicle for city driving, but want the capability of doing some weekend warrior stuff along with camping trips (being able to get off grid away from as many people as possible).
What, in your thought process, would be the best geared for me?

haven't ridden on them yet, they look like the same specs as fox 2.5 factory series, but 3yr warranty, ride quality is probably pretty decent
What wheels are on this Tacoma?
Sean's white Tacoma has Pro Comp 34 Series wheels in a 17x8.5 ET0 (4.75" BS) with 285/70R17 tires. Jeff's grey Tacoma had Level 8 Bully Pros in a 16x8.5 ET0 (4.75" BS). Some of the clips Jeff is running a 295/75R16 and in others he has a 315/75R16.

They do make a solid product line and we run the BP51 on our own Tacoma.
Whats the softest ride? I have a bad back and want to drive on a cloud. 99% on road and just a normal daily driver. 2001 tacoma supercharged. No jumps or anything crazy
Old Man Emu BP51 have been the absolute softest shock we've been on, since you can adjust the compression and rebound extremely soft. Granted, they're also one of the most expensive at $3k/set.
Other route may be the Fox 2.0 with a custom front spring (easily done). Custom tuned Kings are top notch but most $$
Softest budget shock we know of would be the KYB Excel-G, more like $300/set.
This is such good info, but is this softer than stock? Same? And will this setup handle driving over potholes , speed bumps etc smoother?

They are definitely a littler firmer but not in anyway that it's uncomfortable or stiff. It's more a solid feeling.
