Just learned I have social phobia, I knew I wasn't normal but I didn't know it had a name, I hate eating in front of people, especially messy or large foods like burgers or ice creams, I refuse party invites ( by making up excuses) so I don't have to talk to people or make conversation because I feel awkward and embarrassed when I talk even when there's no reason to be. I even sometimes avoid going out with close friends and I worry for days even weeks sometimes because I don't wanna go out. Well you learn something new everyday :)

You could just be a shy introvert. Once you attach a name to it, we tend to dwell on it. Like a doctor telling someone that they are having a heart attack, it causes a stress reaction in our system. It sounds like you may have a phobia, but you can overcome it; don't let it rule your life. :) I wrote a pretty decent article on phobias lately, it'll be published on Vocal.media.com as soon as they approve it. You may be able to benefit from the info. Take care and best wishes.

I have a severe phobia & my friend thought it was funny to taunt me with said phobia (as a lot of people have) and I ended up literally crashing a car while trying to get away. The situation was dangerous for everyone involved & extremely embarassing for me, I even could have gone to jail. It’s no laughing matter. This is the reason I don’t tell anybody my specific phobia anymore. Don’t take phobias lightly.

Emetophobia here (fear of vomit/vomiting). I'm still getting it treated, but there have been huge progresses considering that at the start I was feeling nauseous all the time even if I was perfectly healthy, stopped eating lots of foods, barely got out, developed some obsessive-compulsive behaviours because I thought if I didn't do my rituals I was going to be sick, got an addiction from over using some gums against car nausea, avoided getting out at all, got anxious even if I thought I heard that word somewhere and even didn't want to see my cats because of furballs; while now I can even pretend I'm vomiting to joke about it.

Mad Tile I've got the same phobia! Have had it for a few years now but am just starting to get treatment. I avoid hospitals or clinics because sick people go there and I can't risk it. I also make sure everyone around me has washed their hands recently before touching me or an object I'm going to touch and if someone sneezes They have to be far away from me. It's really disruptive of my life and it triggers my panic disorder to a great extent (which then causes a panic attack which causes more nausea and the whole cycle continues). I avoid going to the fair or being upside down, eating strange foods or eating too much food. Every time I go into a room my brain automatically looks for a trash can just in case I have to suddenly throw up (which is very unlikely because I haven't thrown up in 6 years). People can't mention throwing up around me or make any noises that sound like it either. I can't watch people throw up on the tv. So yeah, it really gets in the way. It makes me feel a bit better to see someone else with the same phobia though! I hope treatment it helping you and I hope it helps me too. :)

There are a few things you can try
Work out why you are shy - the first step in solving an issue is to understand why it is there.
Be comfortable with yourself - this makes it less difficult when you are with other people.
Challenge youself - you will become more confident by doing things - especially by doing activities that push your limits.

    I am diagnosed with agoraphobia.
It’s such a painful process. For me anyways, I describe it as the fear of having a panic attack in public specifically. Like I didn’t just have this fear of public naturally, it developed after I started having panic attacks. When you don’t know what a panic attack is, and it just happens to you, it’s completely vile. it felt like I was suffocating. I started avoiding public areas and even just leaving my house in general because I was afraid another one of those “moments” (panic attacks, but i didn’t know at the time) would happen, and it would be shameful or difficult to hide.

March 2020 no one asked but this is my story:
I have three of the mentioned phobias. And they are diagnosed phobias. My spider phobia is the most 'chill' one because I don't get confronted with spiders a lot. But if I do, I freak out, getting a panic attack, crying, thinking about k*lling myself (depends on situation). I think this fear was given to me by my mum.
Then we have the social phobia. I had it since I was probably around 9 years old. Kids were mocking me starting in first grade (age six) and I still gotta deal with the consequences now (age 24). I already did a therapy in which I also overcame my depression. But I am still affected by social anxiety. I am actively staying away from situations I might be judged in and I rethink every word someone said to me, worrying if they liked me or not. It really affects my life negatively a lot. But I am slowly progressing. My worst fear is the one that I can't even spell out without feeling I might faint. It was mentioned as the third category of specific phobias. It was caused by a traumatic event which also led to my ex-depression. I am struggling with it everyday. Sometimes my brain is just like: "Hey, wanna think about horrible pictures? Here you go." And then I have to try not to faint on the spot. I can not behave normaly. I can't listen to specific topics being discussed. I can't watch movies that I don't know (in the fear I might see stuff and faint)... I have to be extra careful not to accidently hurt myself. I wanted to quit my job every day for over 3 months. But surprisingly I got through. I am a fighter. I am currently looking for a new therapist (got an appointment soon) hoping to be better one day. I really wanna make progress and improve myself to make my life easier for myself and also the people around me. :) I hope I can update this on day.

I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Mild Claustrophobia (I'm fine in an elevator and such, just don't put me in a closed MRI). I know where it came from, and it was due to traumatic issues from childhood. I am glad you are making progress! I have also made progress on my own and by learning some techniques from Doctors on how to deal with Panic Attacks. Like you, I am also a fighter and you have not only inspired me this morning but helped me recognize things about myself I did not before, so Thank you so very much for sharing your story! Street signs, telephone poles, hydro towers, shower heads, pipes, this list goes on and on. I’m currently in therapy and am working on coping mechanisms for it. It’s caused a lot of struggle in my life and a lot of self hate because I didn’t know why I was so terrified of simply taking a shower. Since I’ve been diagnosed I’ve come to terms that they’re a part of me and I’m continuing to work to get better with them.

I was diagnosed with social phobia about a year or two ago and things got better for a bit, but then turned for the worse. I tried going to Walmart with my bf a bit ago and had a panic attack walking down the driveway. During this video I started to cry when he got to the social/agoraphobia part. I've been in and out of hospitals and I've been trying to get ssi at least until I can work through this, I can barely go to the bathroom in my own home without feeling uncomfortable let alone work 5 days a week interacting with people.

I think my agoraphobia and social phobia developed from my childhood when the local kids would try to crush my skull with a storm drain after beating me up, it happened more times then I'd like to talk about. I wasn't even 10 years old at this point. I also a have a fear of storm drains and things in the ground with gaps in from it and I'm fairly sure these all manifested into my Depression and EUPD [Emotional Unstable Personality Disorder]. I'm 27 now and these things have ruined all aspects of my life.

I can’t look at the screen because i am afraid they will show a spider. I have an irrational phobia of spiders. It’s almost as severe as it can get. It’s caused by trauma, i used to not have this phobia. I have come in many situations where a spider will be far from me, and suddenly be directly next to me. Because this happened when i was a small child, I had the thought that they were doing it on purpose and intentionally trying to scare me. I know now that this isn’t the case, but i have gone so long with this phobia, even talking about them makes my heart start to speed up. I can’t look at them. I can’t think about them. I am terrified.

I feel like I have trypophobia, thalassophobia and maybe slight claustrophobia. Seeing clusters of holes makes me feel hot, disgusted and uncomfortable. Deep water and not knowing what’s underneath me makes me feel like I will faint and makes me feel like I could cry too, and enclosed spaces make me feel panicky. It’s the feeling of being trapped and unable to move that scares me, I’ve had loads of dreams where I’m like stuck in places it’s horrible.

I can pretty much handle myself by avoiding the passage which has uk open spaces and gives the view of the ground, but its okay till like 3rd floor. At 4th floor i have pretty much passed out a few times and ended up at the nurse's office. So, i just don't look down or distract myself while we are in the hallways and then people tease me saying that i fake being acrophobic, only i know what i go through

Mine is unusual, I hate walking as Im very slow and recovering from overtraining. I get so worn out I get upset. Woman bullied me so I couldn't eat lunch and I could not leave my house for the evening. I've quit classes and everything. The second trigger was no one gave me space and I couldn't handle it. I was weak and frail when overtraining (lost too much weight from teeth being taken out) and had to gain that back but its a long road, people didn't understand. Took a year to get back my muscle but at least I have but I'm amazed at how walking has such a bad effect walked four hours.

It really annoys me, when another psychologist tells me to walk to the nearest Lamp post, as if that is going to cure me. I try telling them, it isn't the outside that i fear, but the inside of my head. This confuses them, as they can't deal with the root of the problem, only the symptoms of the behaviour. you can't put a plaster on an open wound, it needs to be treated firs

While me, if i see just a tiny bit of their body i will run and my eyes got teary, i will have an anxiety attack, my heart races fast and so is my breathing. Not everyone notice bc i control it.. but if u see it clearly yes u will hear my heavy breathing and my glass eyes bc i just wanna cry there and having bad thoughts abt the worms.. yes worms do trigger my anxiety and so does spoil my mood. I need to do gardening yesterday at my school and people just keep yell at me for not doing my work.. its not i dont want to but worms are just too scary.. im not disgusted by it, i know wut disgusted mean. *Lilacsophobia here* Seeing the word tornado makes my heart race, and just I feel a little nauseous. And my mouth goes dry and it's terrible.
I found out because I was playing a game with natural disasters and my avatar was near a tornado and I had a panic attack, couldn't breathe, saw spots, crying. It was terrible. Went to a doctor and they said basically "yep that's a phobia" but I'm still not getting treatment because they want to work through other issues I have first to see if that helps
    It doesn't lmao.
But I'm so glad there's more awareness on the difference between a phobia and a fear now. Because a lot of people would talk about normal fears when they found out about the lilacsophobia.
Also I'm not sure how mine would be treated. I'd kill before someone could get me near a tornado lol.

I don't necessarily avoid public places but I find myself looking for an exit for escape the minute I walk into a public space like malls, restaurants, church, and stores. I used to spend hours on end at Target, but now I just walk straight to the aisle, pick up whatever I need and out the door I go. I'm also constantly looking over my shoulder but not in a way that says I'm scared. Would this still be considered irrational?

I avoid public restrooms and would only go for emergencies or to wash my hands. But I use my elbow or a paper towel in the room to avoid contact with germs. I would have panic attacks if someone were sick. I would either evacuate or go into a sterile room and self quarantine. I would wear mask, gloves and spray a lot of disinfectant. I could barely touch anything because I feel like everything is contaminated. I would only come out the room to shower. I try to spend too long out the room or else I’ll think of me being contaminated and I would go mad. Even if no one is sick, I’m already quarantined in my room most of the time. I don’t let anyone in my room because they would contaminate it and ruin its orderly fashion. And I hate when things aren’t precise or in an orderly fashion because neat freak. I also do my laundry separate from everyone and use a disinfectant to wash my clothes as well as detergent and softener. I would use more wipes and sprays to clean everything. I always carried a small kit filled with hygiene things. I clean up after my classmates. I would be the last one to leave class because I would make sure it’s clean and in orderly fashion. I can barely touch anything including the floor. I would freak out and be reluctant if I had to. I would immediately wash my hands or use hand sanitiser. I shower multiple times a day and I wipe my phone with alcohol regularly. I could go on but you can already tell what I fear.
