I added a plywood disk with a hole to reduce the size of the exit hole on my homemade rotary sifter. This allows the dirt to remain in the sifter longer break down some of the clumps. Like you, I also saved the larger pieces and put them back to compost further. Broke them up with my rototiller before sifting them again. My design will accept different sized hardware cloth so I switch between 1/2" and 1/4" depending on what I'm using the soil for.

Can’t imagine needing this in my garden! Sifting anything has never been important, don’t know anything that doesn’t grow without it.

I love it ! I live on fifteen acres , my back yard is small , but it is a parodies. I compost everything that goesthrew the house and have several around the property. I compost everything from egg shells , mulch from the big commercial tree company’s to whole animal carcasses from the farm , so I could definitely use one . Thanks for your video !

Looks sweet, but I made something like it using: 2 old bicycle rims, hardware cloth, 4 small roller wheels, and some old boards. Frame with rollers rests on wheelbarrow, rim cylinder rests on the rollers, and you spin it by hand. Had ten good years out of it for $30. I leave it outside.

I used a bucket with a pan with tiny holes, the radius of the pan should be big enough to cover the whole opening of the bucket, i put a bit of dry (not moist or soaked) soil and used a half brick to break down chunks of soil by turning the half brick left and right by hand, allowing soil only to fall through the holes leaving behind anything that isn't soil that way the soil is cleared of sharp or pointy objects making it light weight soft and safe to grab by hand. it also locks in moisture much longer than usual so less watering is needed depending on the weather, its low cost and low maintenance incase you can't afford big machinery or your machine has broken down and you have to wait a long time for spare parts to be delivered you can continue where you left off manually so you wont be behind schedule. its affordable a good workout for your forearms, non-invasive and easy storage ✌

I made a small sifter out of a 5 gal. plastic bucket, sort of like a flour sifter. Works for small lots, not so hard to store. This one is interesting, outside my gardening budget, and storage space for sure though.

My husband made a frame out of timber and wire with 1 inch squares. The size fits over our wheelbarrow. We load the frame and shake it between keeping larger twiggy bits which we throw back into our 2nd bin. Didn’t cost us anything.

These machines have been sold in Canada through Princess Auto for about 5 years at $500 Canadian and go on sale occasionally for $400. They have disappeared from their website recently.
I have 1/2" - 1" crush gravel on my boulevard that has accumulated winter road sand over the years. I also have gravel walkways with too much fines and sand. I also have a large yard waste pile that has been accumulating for the past 20 years that has a lot of crap in the composted organics.
I keep looking at these as a simple screening tool but never pulled out my Mastercard. It looks to be well built and unique on the market.
Now that they have disappeared from the website, I'm worried that I missed a great opportunity to get this tool. 😢
Edit: They are not on the Princess Auto website as they are a seasonal product and will appear next March or so.

I made the sifter barrel with some scrap wood and $11 worth of 1/2" screen from HomeDepot and mounted it on my old cement mixer. Works well. There's lots of DIY videos on UA-cam which I found out AFTER I made mine! lol Figuring it out and making it took me about 2 hours.😎👍

    I knew rigth away.
I build on myself out of a cement mixer.
it is a attatchment i strap to the front and throw in the compost all the way to the back.
What fall thougth is fine kompost, what comes back out the front is large chunks.
The latge chunks are excelent as mulch or in the bottom of post for drainiage.
