As a youngster,I luv prickly pears and would sport sore fingers (stained as well) to be able to enjoy this fruit. I used a small knife to cut out the needles but that was so time consuming. Please come back and let us know how this works out on these small needles.
try the freezing method, it's a game changer! Rinse fruit, put in mesh bags in freezer for a day or two. place in colander over a bucket or bowl and let thaw. Half the juice will run out on it's own and the rest you can easily mash out with a potato masher. I did a side by side experiment and got more juice freezing then burning/peeling!
Good to see you, Mark! If Cheryl is half as good a nurse as she is an engineer, her patients are well cared for! The continual improvement and refinement of her design is highly commendable. Cheryl is a wonderful and helpful being. Her product is worth the money! I have the second generation model and mentioned having the ability to change screens years ago, glad she has figured out how to accomplish that!
Thanks so much for this, have sent a link to Cheryl’s website to my husband (our gardener in chief). Anything that helps him to produce yummy food that I get to cook is a great thing! My husband loves to grow vegetables and I love to cook them, we’re a marriage made in heaven. 😄
Awesome! Well done Cheryl and Mark. These are incredibly useful. I built one about 10 years ago, but it was for sifting gravel when I lived in Arizona, so it's more heavy duty. Mine is probably the same length but much larger in diameter (2 feet), so it's easier to get the shovel inside. The frame is made out of lumber, but I used casters for the rollers, non-coated steel mesh for the screen, and steel for the flange, rod, and ball bearing mechanism.
Can you make something for gardeners to shred their greens for faster composting with a handcrank? I don't have electricity in my community garden & don't want to use gasoline powered. In the olden days there used to be hand cranked shredder for roots & stuff to shred as feed. I remember as a kid growing up in Germany we helped out with shredding. Wish I could find such a tool.
@@MaryJohanna If you have a narrow shovel with the short handle you could do like I do. Stack the pulled weeds or spent plants and then just stand over the pile chopping from above. Gauge the thickness of the stack on how easily the shovel blade gets through to a complete chop. I often do a H2o fermentation compost by packing these cut up greens in a bucket. Sometimes you can add a second amount and turn the mass to sink fresh stuff. Put a cover material on it to block out the smell (like horse manure!) After they change to a duller green and are pretty stinky they can then be piled and layered for the rest they need to break down. I get buckets from my pet loving friends so have quite a few at any time.
@@MaryJohanna No, sorry, not off the top of my head. I would have to do some research. It looks like such tools do exist today. Try an internet search for "manual food shredder" or "manual compost shredder." How about a manual food mill? Or a manual reel lawn mower? An electric lawn mower that you can charge the batteries at home? A knife and cutting board? A meat grinder?
@@itsno1duh thanks for your recommendation, I should do the shovel. Right now I use a hedge trimmer looks like scissors if you know what I mean. I am a member of a community garden and we wondered about a manual shredder. I will keep looking for something but try the shovel next. Thank you!

We had a similar rig for cleaning grain on the farm. It was larger and run by an electric motor. The screened drum was slanted and the grain ran in the top end from an auger and out the low end as the drum turned and into an elevator that took it to the bin. It was quit effective at removing weed seeds from the oats which helped keep the oats from heating in the bin from the moisture in the weed seeds.
Thanks, Mark. I have been looking at these for a while. If Cheryl see's this, maybe she would consider adding a "Notify me" place, so when the sold out products are back in stock, we could get one.
K.P. I don't see any time soon because that wire has more than double the price and I have to special order from China. It would really be great for loofah pods. You crack the dried pod cut the loofah to size and throw them in there the seeds are rolled around and fall out. You simply scoop them up and package them. It would be good for dried herbs as well. What a wonderful idea and even me who has arthritis will be able to lift it up and move it around because it looks very light. Well done!

Just a heads up

Maybe this will help - ua-cam.com/video/8JncH6l6VWY/v-deo.html I didn't buy or build one. So, can't comment on the quality. Idea is interesting though. Get a good workout while shred up kitchen / garden wastes
Made something similar. Mechanically the same, except mine is motorised with a water hose. Use it mostly to wash vegetables and fruits. Currently prototyping in a shredder/grinder attachment. Meant to breakdown leaf into smaller to allow more compact saving area for compost.
Hey! I'll pay you to make one for me! But only if it's going to cost less than an arm & a leg... Mostly bcuz my arms are almost worthless, so that counts my arms out for trade value! I need one to mix my soil. Bcuz I have Rheumatoid Arthritis in my elbows as well as hands, something as basic as mixing soil is rather difficult for me. And I like to get all science-y with my soil mixes! I thought of getting a small cement mixer, however, the way things are made these days, and prices jumping sky high, well... It just doesn't seem worth it. But something like THIS ! With the option to hold the soil in while it's mixing, then I could remove the outer cover and sift it into soft, fine soil ! Seems like a winner!! Oh, and if I ever need help turning the handle, I could use a belt and hook it up to my old record player to make it turn! You know, just like they did in the Looney Tunes cartoons!! 😆😆😆😆😆 😳 I bet it would work tho. 😳
P.S. We also shred a lot of leaves around here. I mean - A LOT !! So ANYTHING invented which makes that process lighter on my arms, is definitely something I'm interested in!! Currently we use the vacuum option on the leaf blower. Leaf blowers are sooooo heavy for me! And we have 5 old growth Live Oak trees which pump out leaves twice a year. Their leaves are very, very, thick. Which means they take about 3 years to break down - and that's IF they receive continuous moisture. BUT- If they're shredded, they can turn into garden gold in at least half the time!! Oh - and acorns mixed in are the thing that chews up the leaf blower mulching blade! There's NO WAY I'm going to pick out acorns from leaf piles!! So a good, long lasting blade, will definitely be needed. just sayin...
What a useful invention for someone who does gardening and needs a finer soil for planting. Additionally, this clever looks looks sturdy and well made!
This looks like a great product! I would like to see a version that uses bearings instead of the wooden rollers though. It may increase cost, but would increase the life of the frame from friction, which would benefit heavy use.
My grandfather used to make his own sifters. I loved playing with it on our "farm" in Montana. I would like to buy this product. I have a small garden and I use a metal sifter that i have to shake.
That’s a great product idea! I’ve been using an old fry basket the past few years and by the time I’m done filling up a garbage can full of sifted compost, my hands are rather wore out.
Lovely video for a wonderful product! Inspiring to see simple brilliance born from simple necessity, and you sharing your neighbors success. I love grassroots efforts like this! And I'd love to buy one of those sifters.
Hi Mark, Here is a helpful hint for the maker of your sifter: If you would make these gadget's out of all food grade metal, and had a door on one end: Those gadgets could make great Pepper Roasters. Roast peppers are very popular in green chili gravy used in Mexican dishes. I love to use roast chili's in enchiladas, ETC. Jessie from Arkansas USA
I got a better idea for you. Do a rolling scoop design where it picks up items from the wheel barrel and then also at the same time on the other end dump them. Then you can create a simple mechanism to drive the whole thing using a small belt to the wheel of the wheel barrel and you can then use the forward momentum to get more done just by pushing the wheel barrel. You can then do a whole plot of land with this trick in a day.
Good day. I just love watching your videos. You are very informative. The ideas, how to's, products, and everything you show are great. You do a great job, I have learned many things from your videos. I'm thankful for what you share 😃👍
Much like the dragon fruit, I use mine to trim dried cannabis buds. I fitted it in a clamshell made from two totes with the handle sticking out. I can catch all the trim and easily collect it to make hashish later. It takes about 10 min to process 300-500 grams. It saves days of hand trimming in the fall. Great product 10/10.
@@earthkeepinggreen7763 I can see that working great for a lot of operations. I personally only use a 1/2 inch screen anymore. I have such an excess of product every fall that I only focus on the larger/prettier buds. Everything that falls through a 1/2-inch screen is made into bubble hashish (made with ice and water) for use in topicals and edibles.
That is such an awesome product, I’ll have to buy myself one. And those round cucumbers are interesting, they caught my eye at Bunnings and I have just started to sow them now, can’t wait to see how it turns out.
FYI. I just ordered one. The discount code did not show up for me. I called and she is adding one to every order today because she knows that we all came from SSM. Thanks Mark!
Update: it finally cooled off enough for me to try this. Amazing product! I hand sifted my compost before with a homemade screen. Four hours of backbreaking work, with my tumbler it took me 30 minutes to get a wagon full. I’m so impressed with this investment! It’s worth every penny, I would highly recommend it! Customer service was great! Happy compost, happy plants! Blessings!
I'm newer to the large gardening world so I'm still learning, at the beginning I thought this would be "just another useless kitchen gadget", but after watching the video I can really see the benefit to having one...thanks, I'll be looking to get one
This is awesome. I often buy compost in the fall to let it break down over the winter. Some winters are super dry and about half won't be broken down. I could use something like this to sift out what's broken down and recompose the rest.
That looks like a chile roaster in Santa Fe, NM. (USA). They took bigger ones that are identical to that and would have flames beneath them and roast green chiles, then bag them up and sell them. You’d take it home, scrap off the charred skin and chop them up and make pickled green chiles, chile peppers or green chile sauce. And the smell in the air. Nothing like it.
I use a homemade sifter to remove the dirt when you get down to those last rake/shovelfuls of leaves, pine cones, bark, etc that you want to put into the compost pile without a bunch of dirt going in, too.
And, in between seasons, you can use it for lotteries and bingo.

Yes i found this too…. I was really disappointed. I wouldve paid a decent shipping cost too!
Yeah, I found the same thing. Straight after watching this clip I went to the website to find out, BUM_BOW!!!!! No Oz postage. You could almost class it as click bait.
@@ashman4809 yes you could makes me want to just build my own, not he’s enough details there to do so but no motivation, no shipping to Aus =. Motivation
Thanks for sharing this fantastic sifter! I just turned 79 and this will be great for me.💕
The slow motion scenes sold me!
Brilliant idea!
It's a practical size. Sifts, airates. Ground dried leaves can improve farm soil and maybe help retain nutrients.
It’s been really nice following this channel and I’ll just say all of their videos are mind blowing, Great Concepts!
I’d love to know you better Handsome, thats only if you dont mind cos you seem to be a very nice person with a great sense of humor
Cool little product, I've seen you use this a couple of times and give it a plug in your videos mate.
Have a ripper Mark!
great idea I'll try make my own here in South Africa. I put my ginger in a homemade bag and gave them a wash in my washing machine, no spin lol
great idea for sifting and thanks for introducing us to an entrepreneur who was dedicated to making a great product.
Thank you 😊❣️
Now we need a rolling shredder to cut greens smaller for composting. I have no electric in my garden and don't want to use gasoline. This is great!
Woah.. good luck! Sounds great
Awesome. Love to see them
Nice
😆😆😆😆😆
😳 I bet it would work tho. 😳
And we have 5 old growth
Live Oak trees
which pump out leaves twice a year. Their leaves are very, very, thick. Which means they take about 3 years to break down - and that's IF they receive continuous moisture.
BUT-
If they're shredded, they can turn into garden gold in at least half the time!!
Oh - and acorns mixed in are the thing that chews up the leaf blower mulching blade!
There's NO WAY I'm going to pick out acorns from leaf piles!!
So a good, long lasting blade, will definitely be needed.
just sayin...
Giving a big green thumbs up to Cheryl. Great design.

Great bird sounds to greet my morning.
What a useful invention for someone who does gardening and needs a finer soil for planting. Additionally, this clever looks looks sturdy and well made!
Awesome video! Very handy for a big size garden !👍🌻
This looks like a great product! I would like to see a version that uses bearings instead of the wooden rollers though. It may increase cost, but would increase the life of the frame from friction, which would benefit heavy use.
Very clever! I’m going to need one of these. I’ve seen you use them before, thanks for sharing the info.
My grandfather used to make his own sifters. I loved playing with it on our "farm" in Montana. I would like to buy this product. I have a small garden and I use a metal sifter that i have to shake.
👍👍What a great gadget!
Very elegant and looks extremely useful! 👍👍
Thanks Phil! Cheers mate :)
Too small to be garden useful but great for a raffle ticket drawing.
Mark, I’m a new subscriber. I absolutely love your informative program!
Thank you Mother Earth 🌍
On ya, Cheryl! This is a fantastic product and I hope it really takes off for you!
🙏 Thank you! God bless you ☺️
PFA ; it won’t !
Thumbs up, Cheryl!
Thanks Mark for the introduction to this great item!

Great review! Thanks for sharing! Have a great day
Good day. I just love watching your videos. You are very informative. The ideas, how to's, products, and everything you show are great. You do a great job, I have learned many things from your videos. I'm thankful for what you share 😃👍
Boy I would like one!!! But, at my old age I guess I will wait on this. I sure hope Cheryl does really well because its a great product.
Hey Mark, thanks for sharing, LOVE to support small business. Still loving my beddies beds I got off your site many moons ago! Thanks so much!
So sweet!!!!
Thanks for letting others know ☺️
If I made one with a permanent 1/8 inch screen inside would that be ideal for you?
@@earthkeepinggreen7763 I can see that working great for a lot of operations. I personally only use a 1/2 inch screen anymore. I have such an excess of product every fall that I only focus on the larger/prettier buds. Everything that falls through a 1/2-inch screen is made into bubble hashish (made with ice and water) for use in topicals and edibles.

I use one with a finer mesh to peel peanuts after I finish toasting them
That is such an awesome product, I’ll have to buy myself one. And those round cucumbers are interesting, they caught my eye at Bunnings and I have just started to sow them now, can’t wait to see how it turns out.
Go apple cucumbers great producers .Buy the seed chrystal apple are easy to propagate and grow .Plant now and you may have 3 crops
Blessings!
The ASMR was legitness. Love this channel.
I'm newer to the large gardening world so I'm still learning, at the beginning I thought this would be "just another useless kitchen gadget", but after watching the video I can really see the benefit to having one...thanks, I'll be looking to get one
dude i have wanted one of these forever !
saw one of these on Marty's garden channel years ago top little sifter for compost
Wow that looks great for the worm farm!!
And they're great at bingo halls, too! But, I like it that it will knock off thorns from cactus fruit.
Here in Texas, we use those to flame broil our peppers. Well, we just make them larger.
This is awesome. I often buy compost in the fall to let it break down over the winter. Some winters are super dry and about half won't be broken down. I could use something like this to sift out what's broken down and recompose the rest.
Great story!
I am so gonna buy one of these! What an awesome product
This has to be so useful for those with lower mobility!
LOVE it! Have been wanting something like this! It's not in the budget right now, but when it is, I will he purchasing one!
What a great idea. It could do with an attachment for easy pouring into it. Like a chimney elbow pipe.
It's no wonder it SOLD out GREAT invention,, , might just have to keep using my round sifter for a while more. Tfs 👍
Cheers Mark… really nice product, and yes, very helpful in the garden… 👍👍👍👍😃
woah. not only a great gardening tool, but great for "spinning" dirt out of fleece! bookmarked her site, so I can save up for one!
That's a nice machine! Quite well made. I just might buy one. Thank you, Mark!
Excellent product
Highly appreciated 😊
I use a homemade sifter to remove the dirt when you get down to those last rake/shovelfuls of leaves, pine cones, bark, etc that you want to put into the compost pile without a bunch of dirt going in, too.
Love that product and love your channel Mark. Best wishes from Britain 👍🇬🇧🇦🇺
