If you don't have a ham license or privileges for the armature radio band that you are trying to use then you deserve to be fined. We have to study and pass tests to hold our licenses. We don't want the lazy and or ignorant people on our bands without putting in the work that we have to. I just don't understand why some of these guys just don't understand this.
Only a lazy and ignorant person would not know how to correctly spell the word "Amateur" OR, at least know how to do a spell-check before leaving a comment.
I just wanted a set of camping radios. Sounded easy enough. Figured I would watch a few videos about radio and immediately found Randy. Now I’ve got my GMRS and ham licenses and 41 handhelds. I’m in 2 radio clubs, and I’ve even given away more radios than I currently own. All because I wanted a camping radio……
You Sir, and Josh are how and why I got into radio. Specifically GMRS for me. I got my GMRS permission slip yesterday to use the free airwaves, I bought a couple of Boofwangs, but now I'm going down the rabbit hole of Wouxun thanks to you. Cheers!
The two of you have been one of my best radio resources as a newb in radio. I still know incredibly little of what there is to know. But you have both been great gateways. Best regards.
I need more of this in my life...the banter is perfect. "So the Japanese person told you how to pronounce a Chinese word?...oh, so it's Chinese?...yes, of course!" You guys are great!
Excellent conversation. I am an amateur extra who has a GMRS license and a CB and use them all with friends who operate on each. Getting ready to put up a GMRS repeater for my friends who like the radio but will not do well with the study for a Ham license so that they can talk over the hill. I love it radio and will encourage anybody on whatever frequency to share how awesome radio communication is.
It is always great to see you making contact with Josh (who is not anonymous) and hear the two of you talk and bring some sanity to the topics surrounding GMRS and HAM use.
As far as anonymity goes, we really don’t talk to “anonymous” men (there are some women) but we always identify with our call signs so we’re not anonymous. . . When we log our contacts, the logging software confirms the other persons identity.
@@N2YTAit's just a hilarious defense that started way back when the sad people started in on Randy for being a lesser human for just wanting to use radios to talk to nearby people he actually knows.
Real men drive jeeps. Real smart men drive toyotas. Dude, your content is great. I'm barely getting into these radios for when I'm on trails. Your videos have been a huge help in this learning process. Thanks much homie!
Thank you both for making us smile and also mentoring us dual sad hams/happy gmrs people. Please make this a regular meetup. Thanks again and take care Gentlemen
OH the roger beep.. if you ever want to get a call back on a repeater, turn on the roger beep. I had accidentally left mine on one day and tried to reach a local repeater.. instantly got three replies 'TURN OFF YOUR ROGER BEEP'. Radio check accomplished.
One thought I'd like to add is, in my own personal experience, buying a pair of Baofeng GMRS radios (and the necessary license to use them) became a gateway drug to move forward in the hobby- buying better and better radios, and becoming a higher and higher licensed amateur radio operator....so yes, we can all joke around about "cheap radios from wherever" but remember that enticing someone to inexpensively try out the hobby can often lead to a fairly productive member of our hobby down the road... and while I am now an amateur Extra, I still maintain my GMRS license and use GMRS as often as I operate HF.
Good video guys. I usually don't listen to podcast of two strange(r) men chat, but this was entertaining and interesting. I frequent both of your YT channels and enjoy the content. You segment reminded me of the time I got an OO (official observer) advisory notice postcard in the mail a few years back: My buddy and I was shooting the sh|t one night (11-midnight) on an unused quiet simplex ham channel. We were talking about music, "how's the wife and kids", and testing the Anytone radios "scramble" feature. At some point, I heard some dtmf interference, and some dude told us not to play music, not to use the "scramble" feature and we should ID our call-signs every ten minutes. I told him in non-vulgar language what I thought of his interruption. A few days or week later, my buddy and I both received an OO Advisory Notice postcard in the mail outlining the aforementioned event. Anyways, I saved the noticed and put it up on my office wall as a conversational piece to make fun of the dudes that walk around with their clipboards. If the OO dude is watching this video: 🖕
I’ve been a licensed ham for 20 years, but never really got into it. Covid got me into it a little more and both of these guys videos helped and I just got the GMRS license. Glad to see both of my favorite UA-cam radio people talking in one video.
Awesome video! Really enjoyed the long format. You should definitely do more of these with other UA-camrs. Maybe trail recon you could talk with others about what communications they use as well as other things that interest you and your viewers such as the Salton Sea
It looks like Josh wasn't even born when I bought my first 27Mhz Sommerkamp TS 340 DX radio end 70's. I still have it together with a President Madison in storage. I avoided becoming a sad ham. Watched the entire video, and it was fun to watch.
Great video! Loved the interaction between the 2 of you. I'm thinking y'all need to look into doing more videos. BTW, beard oil, works wonders for keeping the beard dandruff under control (for those of us that have the issue) and the inching.
I did a quick analysis, and these two are neck-and-neck for number one ham channel. Randy's actually ahead if you count the number of views divided by years in the life of the channel. I know Randy is not a ham guy but sad hams criticizing him for talking about ham radios ironically MADE his channel the number one ham channel 😂👍
Really do love these videos . just like most of what you produce its informative and entertaining and funny as hell. so what is not to love about that ;) LOVE YA BROTHER
NotA-Rubicon dude really rocks. I love his price conscious layman's approach to two way radios. I'm studying for my tech ham permit but agree with his attitude towards this whole radio bit. I got a GMRS License and a Beuphang 25 dollar special. And it bombed. Lebanon Tennessee is useless for GMRS. Listening to a scanner I hear allot of chat on 2 meter repeaters. And storm chasers on 440. Word to the wise, get a scanner and assess the frequency your interested in before you buy. By the way, once I get in my RV and put some miles behind me GMRS comes alive !! But when I am home it's as useless as a blind porcupine in a nudest colony.
To everyone (SOME PEOPLE) that hate on Randy and leave sh*tty comments about his sarcasm I say this, IT IS SATIRE AND IT IS SARCASTIC HUMOR. Randy is a great guy and a gentlemen as you can see in thsi video. This is who Randy really is. PS Thany you RAndy for all of your generous help with my organization!
I highly agree with brands and a chinito radio, is better then no radio. Who cares if it's a million dollar rig or a cheap Chinese rig as long as it works.
Thanks to both of your channels ive recently become a HAM(not sad). Best of it is i have a Spanish license but I'm from the UK.. keep up the good work guys
You know what's funny is that the sad hymns and some people sort of turned him into the persona you see more recently. Randy brilliantly adapted to those people and created a career out of it. If you go back about 4 years you'll see the real Randy.
When I served in the Army stationed in Vietnam in 1971, and was able to ‘call’ back home it was through the MARS system. Think it was by use of Ham radio operators. Every time I or my parents ended a conversation we each had to say “Over” ( kinda like a Roger beep) with somewhat long delays in between. I was able to call home only one time, and the duration was limited to five minutes.
I do appreciate these videos, and would like to see more. Short Q&A Sessions would be good. It's nice to see Randy interact with other people knowledgeable in radio where he doesn't have to pre-defend his statements to trolls in every sentence.
This video about our hobby, reminds me of another hobby that I have enjoyed for years, and that is the most recent with the FAA and radio controlled model aircraft. These new rules are about "drones", and the drones are lumped in with model aircraft (airplanes). This has been causing a lot of new rules with model airplanes a lot of anxious. Time will be seen on how it all works out, but it could possibly ruin the radio controlled (R/C) model airplane hobby. .
This is a good video. Quite informative. I am a ham but I recently joined our local search and rescue group. They use GMRS as well as 2 meter repeaters and also have access to a couple of the Sheriff's and hospital channels. It takes all kinds to make things work sometimes. So, the hand held radios the SAR group uses is the unlocked Baofeng. I am considering buying a mobile GMRS for a home base unit. The part I like about GMRS is that my license (WSCB898) also covers my wife. Something my ham license does not do. So she can talk to me when I am out and about. Where I live there is no cell service so cell phones are worthless.
