DIYers, not just preppers, will love NC Scout's book. Within two weeks of receiving it I was cutting coax to make a field antenna, assembling a solar powered repeater box with a couple of boofwangs, and learning how to rope climb a tree to install the setup and increase my range. So much fun.
THANKS for this interview. Amazing. Learned a lot and love all the things that were said. Focusing on local commuinity has to be our primary goal. Cheers from Panama in Central America.
His Baofeng book is required reference material. Also wanted to say hi to you, I noticed we're about a day out from the 20th anniversary of the FDCC AWB94 Sunset Party! Has it really been 20 years already? That was a great time, and your hospitality is a treasured memory. Still have Kimber if you ever want to visit with her.
Bought the book, (also his SIGINT book and Antenna books) took the classes. I’m a not-so-sad ham and learned way more than I thought I would and it’s a much more practical knowledge. Good interview with a good man.
Wow! A lot of truth right here . Especially after what just happened to us here in WNC. I hope him and his family are ok. Because our internet , power and cell service was out at least a week is what got me searching the tube for radios. Came across your channel and then this video! And once things clean up and we recover, definitely going to be signing up for some of his classes ! Thanks for all your videos !
I’m glad I stayed for the interview. Excellent interview, excellent topic and excellent Expert with quite a history. Thank you for you efforts and humor.
Guerrilla Guide to Baofeng is worth the read, for anyone even mildly interested in comms. The principles of commsec and how to set up a comms plan alone makes earns it a spot in the library.
Great to see a MAN say it as it is, Information and perspective of Matt was a pleasure to watch, thanks for the time taken by both of you to make this, cheers.
Excellent video guys! I love the part in regards to getting involved in your community! Jeeps and Comms - CJ 7, w/TJ suspension, 4.0L straight 6. Throttle body fuel injection with back up injectors and dual fuel pumps one being a back up. ! BOOM!! And guys the radio "HT" you want for SHTF is the AT-878. Digital 2meter phone, SMS too with no internet! And hands down the most linear keypad programming I've ever used! FJR...
This is a great interview. Thanks for this information, perfect for a complete radio noob. (Me). Picked up a 152 thanks to you. Neat to hear NC Scout endorse it too
He is real on the issues that he discusses. Especially enjoyed the Earp the take which I agree with totally. This man is a thinker. Thank you for the interview.
I consider HAM Radio operators traders to the Constitution. You cannot LIcense free speech. If you have signed up for a license to Talk in a free speech Environment. Then you have given up your constitutional rights.
I thought the information in this video that "NC Scout AKA BrushBeater" should be required viewing for "some people". Very good information in my opinion. I enjoy all of the video's you produce. So Thank You for serving your community in so many ways. Keep on Keepen on. Mark
Love the new interview format! Long-form, informative and in-depth, relevant and interesting range of subjects covered, an overall enjoyable and timely presentation that leaves viewers wanting more. Well done! I encourage you to continue this format as a periodic addition to your current (very popular and original) productions. I'll wager you can find many other interesting & informative guests who would be more than happy to participate, probably more than you yourself believe. And some of them might surprise you. Lots of room for growth and expansion into a whole host of new and/or related subjects and interviewees. Brilliant move, my friend! Live-Streams are next, then who knows? Maybe even Podcasts, if you are so-inclined. And just to think, this whole thing started in one of the literally MOST barren and hostile places on earth, The Salton Sea! "It's a funny world we live in." You live a very interesting life, my friend. Bravo!
So I tried his books. Nice surprise. Yes they look like an old fashioned army manual but are much better. His descriptions of the communication do’s and dont’s, methods and procedures used real conflicts are excellent and make it a worthy read regardless of one’s experience with vhf/uhf.
Great video and thanks to both of you for posting great content! Keep it up Randy! I learn something new with every video, if Baby Xenu wants it to be so....
My first Jeep was a CJ-7 because I couldn’t find a Scrambler anywhere. I was lucky to own one that was the Levi’s edition with a 360 AMC engine. Instant unplanned chick magnet.
I had thought about buying this book. I had my list down to this one and the Baofeng Radio Bible 2024. I chose the latter. I will now buy this book as well.
I've been using the meshtastic mesh for a couple of months now. Agreed on the points you make. I'm an amateur extra too, I'm enjoying the experimentation. There's a large network out here in SoCal, many people having fun and experimenting with the tech. It's been a fun way to see changes when testing antennas and antenna placement. Gives me great ideas for my ham radio antennas.
Great video/ interview. Once again, you have created an entertaining and informative product. I wished that you would have asked him about using a Roger Beep.
I know next to nothing about radio communication. I was getting a little interested in 'shortwave radios' to gather better faster information should SHTF but it seems support for shortwave is rapidly dying likely due to the internet. I've been watching Randy 'NotaRubicon' for a while and became convinced I needed to take a few steps. I knew about NC Scout as he is referenced quite often in the prepper/militia communities. So I bought a couple AR-152s and 'The Guerilla's Guide...'. The knowledge within the book will get you started and more if you apply the information. Like most things I've found out regular practice with the radio will help build your skills. I haven't finished the book yet or played with the radio much but I'm finding active channels and 'listening' to local chat. After a while It becomes obvious that antennas play a big part in collecting 'fars'. Randy - no doubt - will be reading every comment about this new venture so I want to let him know this was great and he couldn't have picked a better guest to start with! I can't usually listen to an hour plus podcast but this was truly interesting!
Meshtastic is OK as a companion to voice radio in a disaster as one can text lists, names, etc. to/from a central command cell rather than have to key up and say "I spell, Juliet, Oscar, Hotel, November, break." "Sierra, November, Uniform, Fox, Fox, Yankee." Someone at the Command Cell with a meshtastic radio hooked up to a PC can then just copy-pasta the text info coming in from the field into their reports or in a text file to print out and hand to others. That's pretty much how it's used out here in the Midwest outside of locals just chatting with each other. No one here is seriously thinking of using it in a tactical situation lest something fall on their head a few minutes later. I would *never* use it in any sort of tactical environment whatsoever. Ever. Way too "noisy". Those that know, know. Now that being said, there's a tech preview of the Meshtastic firmware - 2.5.x - that includes PKI encryption for all messaging and all but it's still transmitting on the bottom of the 900mhz ISM band as well as in the 2.4Ghz band. Encrypted is good when transmitting names and possible medical conditions in a disaster situation. But the Meshtastic signal itself does stick out on a panadapter looking at 900-915mhz spectrum because it's a series of slanted lines over and over. And by "stick out" I mean "holy shlt, that signal looks really weird."
I've heard a few relief volunteers on Broadcastify's Mt. Mitchell repeater the last couple of weeks desperately sharing their email or SMS due to poor signal, then complaining a couple days later about spammed inboxes. I initially thought Meshtastic might be a possible 'texting' alternative for when voice communication just isn't clear enough, but it sounds like it may not be up to the task without carpeting a disaster area with the things. I've seen suggestions of combining them with an RPi to function something like a "decentralized BBS" but that sounds like it could quickly get complicated and expensive vs a local community of folks who have radios and know how to use them.
Respect to the guest and of course you notarubicon , but this mofo was the hardest to follow character I have ever listened to. Enjoyed it though, made my high even better❤😂
I probably dropped a grand on Meshtastic. Nothing ever worked. I designed/built solar repeaters, and it failed most my range tests. Finally, unless I could see someone directly behind a repeater, then I could not communicate. Example, from my handset, to my repeater, to a distance repeater, I couldn't communicate to anyone behind that repeater. Forget anyone behind yet another repeater. I did get repeater to repeater range of 4 miles. But it's not useful as a emergency SMS message replacement. It just doesn't work. At the point of having a couple repeaters up, I realized I could have bought every person in my club a GMRS radio. HT costs about $30. On Meshtastic, you easily spend that much on every node. Sure, the boards are $18, but you need a case, battery, antenna, not to mention a $200 repeater on the roof. You can build a GMRS base station cheaper than a solar powered Meshtastic repeater. So if any potential Meshtastic peeps are out there, just go to GMRS. Save monies.
I agree, mostly; that said not all programing can be accomplished without Chirp unless I'm missing. I cannot rename a new entry, nor can I set S skipped channels from scan and really many other functions that are in menus in Chirp. I do like the AR152 but IMO there is stronger and more waterproof models available and I have an assortment of those. The one with the flashlight on the bottom I find very useful rather than on the top. I've a nice collection of BaoFengs but the last ones with Channel Scan and log I have found very useful to pair with our walkie-talkies. YMMV.

Where did you get that shirt? I love it
Is that radio unlocked, as referenced in the video? Just trying to make sure I'm not surprised when it arrives. Respectfully.

Good stuff gents
Proud to say that Brushbeater is a long time friend. He knows his stuff. Highly recommend his store.
His Baofeng book is required reference material.

Look forward to seeing more videos on your swamp sniper rifle.
He's got a store
Bought the book, (also his SIGINT book and Antenna books) took the classes. I’m a not-so-sad ham and learned way more than I thought I would and it’s a much more practical knowledge. Good interview with a good man.
NC Scout's training courses are very well put together and highly reccomended.
Wow! A lot of truth right here . Especially after what just happened to us here in WNC. I hope him and his family are ok. I hope I always remain teachable. Thanks for introducing me to Bushbeater, Randy.
Same feeling here.
I’m glad I stayed for the interview. Excellent interview, excellent topic and excellent Expert with quite a history. Thank you for you efforts and humor.
Yes it is.
This was one of the best conversations I've ever heard on UA-cam. Thank you both so much.
Guerrilla Guide to Baofeng is worth the read, for anyone even mildly interested in comms. The principles of commsec and how to set up a comms plan alone makes earns it a spot in the library.
Most real discussion I have heard in a long time. Thank you sincerely for doing this and sharing it with everyone.
Great to see a MAN say it as it is, Information and perspective of Matt was a pleasure to watch, thanks for the time taken by both of you to make this, cheers.
Absolutely fantastic program. Excellent comments from Brushbeater.
Scout is the Bomb Digitty
My two favorite smart Smart Asses on the internet!

Randy: Today's guest needs no introduction
Also Randy: Introduces guest
Me: 🤔
This is a great interview.
I apreciate how Mr. B considers amateur radio to be a skillset, rather than a faith.
I consider HAM Radio operators traders to the Constitution. You cannot LIcense free speech. If you have signed up for a license to Talk in a free speech Environment. Then you have given up your constitutional rights.
Great video Randy and Brushbeater 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍
Great guest! Brushbeater is a wealth of knowledge.
Freaking awesome interview! Thanks for doing it. And always remember, when seconds matter, the cops are only minutes away

An interview I never expected to see, but am appreciative you did it.
Thank you Sir! GREAT 1st interview… loved it!
Bought the book… It’s a great addition to my “analogue library” of how to books, from gardening to carpentry. For when the electricities are gone 😮
Just ordered the book. These are the people we need in the HAM world. No sad Hams
great interview, i stayed engaged the whole time. Thanks for that last part, a lil bit about you. Very Nice! cheers! NotaHater :D
RANDY IS DOING INTERVIEWS!!! BRILLIANT!!!

NC Scout literally wrote the book on SHTF Boofwhang!

Awesome! Matt is the the man!
So I tried his books. Nice surprise. Yes they look like an old fashioned army manual but are much better. His descriptions of the communication do’s and dont’s, methods and procedures used real conflicts are excellent and make it a worthy read regardless of one’s experience with vhf/uhf.
Thanks for this. When I got my boofwang radios, I also picked up the NC Scout book as well.

Informative and interesting conversation gents...thank you both👏👏👏
excellent interview. thank you.
This mans lives in WNC and specializes in coms. I hope he's ok, and invite him back for an update! He probably saved a few lives.
Loved the interview, I've read his blogs for years and agree with the points he brought up during the video.....
Long overdue video! Stay safe from the fires! I hope my mountain cabin makes it!
Thanks , always wanted to hear Matts story. Warched NC Scout YTs for awhile.

Gotta say that was a great vlog/discussion. Do more like that pleeeeeease?
NAR / NC Scout crossover?? The dynamic duo!
I had thought about buying this book. I had my list down to this one and the Baofeng Radio Bible 2024. I chose the latter. I will now buy this book as well.
I had an old ham buddy (RIP) that made a yagi antenna out of a tape measure. Can’t wait to check out this book.
Thanks very much for this 👍👍
Great job. Good to see you Matt. Maybe I should bring my 99 TJ next time I see you.
Throughly enjoyed listening in !
Have the book!....AWESOME BOOK!
Best show ever.
Great interview Randy! You are covering new ground and fast! 🤝

It's an awesome book !!
Good interview
Good stuff. More like this
50:26 - _The emperor has no clothes!_ It’s rather refreshing to hear somebody pointing out the obvious!
Awesome interview!
Great video/ interview.
Once again, you have created an entertaining and informative product.
I wished that you would have asked him about using a Roger Beep.
Excellent! Men speaking American!
00:17 ... And yet we sit thru an introduction... Oh the humanity !!!
Best nap I have had in weeks.
just ordered his book and ordered the boofwang ar152

So funny. You know what a rolodex is & think others do. We're old, dude!
Very epic. Am soup scriber now. WOW!
Great interview!!! As a ham, there's a lot of truth bombs. I own both the books mentioned and they are fantastic.
thanks for the video
Respect to the guest and of course you notarubicon , but this mofo was the hardest to follow character I have ever listened to. Enjoyed it though, made my high even better❤😂
Nice art Randy, remember the women and children….and who took them out
That is a based image to have up as a reality check.
NotaRubicon is hilarious with his delivery of questions 😂

I watched all the way to the good part. Now I want a LJ long jeep. Thanks.
The most common sense that I've heard concentrated, in one conversation " all year.
I don't have any radios yet. I would like to buy the AR 152. How do I know if it's unlocked?
I have the book. Good interview..
