They are expecting an attack from their opponent. Running up and shielding is a safe way to close the distance between the opponent and yourself, if you think they’re going to attack where you are. It can also potentially make them misspace their attack, leading to some sort of punish.
@@MercenarySmash How is it safe when in grab range though? You're kind of relying on the expectation that they won't, which is 50/50. I've noticed in sets that some players choose to take advantage and some don't, at least it allows a breather.
@@Knivess0 it’s not 100% safe, nothing is risk-free in this game. That’s why you only do it when you *think* they’re going to attack in that area. It makes it not a 50/50 if you’re collecting data on your opponent and acting in accordance with what they do.
going for a grab against someone’s shield carries a decent amount of risk with it. it will lose to spotdodge, roll towards/away, jump, drop shield jab/dtilts preemptively, preemptive drop shield dash back, and preemptive drop shield jabs. going for a grab is essentially a hard read that the person will continue to hold shield. in this matchup specifically, grab also doesn’t give that much reward since these characters tend to get only two hit combos off of grabs. the punishment for whiffing a grab in this matchup is more than the reward for landing a grab. you’ll see top players shielding a lot less against characters like luigi, kazuya, and ice climbers since they get extremely high reward off of grabs which skews the risk reward. shielding gives the player a fairly low risk defensive option in neutral that allows them to see how their opponent will react to certain things they do which allows them to adapt later. Lucina also has an extremely fast up b out of shield which will punish any unspaced pressure from sephiroth on shield. sephiroth lacks quick moves in close ranges (only his nair, jab, and grab are fast), so he may rely on his shield to defend himself at those ranges since he can’t contest Lucina easily (since trying to hit her back may result in her attack coming out before his).
I don’t really agree. While Sephiroth has the range advantage Lucina has better stats & frame data and can edgeguard Sephiroth well because of his linear recovery routes & weakness to counters. I think it’s even, maybe slight Sephiroth favour.
5:33 “MAMA MIA!”
Sorprendente lo bonito que juega M4E
I would be so pissed at those up-b's on the ledge lol.
This might be a stupid question, but why do so many players choose to sit in shield when they're in grabbing range?
It's an Human reflex. Players can't do an other play so they try to shield

sentire persone italiane commentare una partita di smash in inglese, per me è molto strano😂 non so perché ma è così
This matchup is honestly garbage for Lucina. Maybe her worst

Literally even. What?
Sephiroth is low tier remember?
