  • New York got a late start in the craft beer market, but the city is making up for lost time. The number of microbreweries jumped from three in 2011 to 14 this year.

Small brewers benefit from tax breaks, but they still face many challenges. 'Real estate is one of the biggest obstacles you have in the city,' says NYC Brewers Guild president Kelly Taylor. 'That's why I think you are going to see a lot more 'nanos' in New York City.'
Nanobreweries produce a small quantity of beer per batch - fewer than five barrels per batch. Some of them are small enough to fit into a family garage, as the Guardian's Ana Terra Athayde finds out.

For all those people knocking down home brewers dreams of opening up a brewery, this proves them wrong

Amazing that NYC has so few breweries glad to see its catching up. high real estate prices have probably got a lot to do with it. Great to see so many home brewers/nano-brewers making the step to micro-production breweries over in the UK. huge respect for the efforts and the skill that goes into the craft.

100 years ago, New York had a huge presence of breweries. Big one's at that.

Sitting here in Florida with serious self distribution envy. And that business entrance was not handicapped friendly. And where is the triple sink? And where is your food menu? Food has to represent 60% of your gross.

The key is having income from another source that pays the bills, so that the brewery can break even for a few years.

If i had a brewery that small I'd drink it all myself, why waste it by selling the little bit you made with all your effort and knowledge, I'd be way to attached to it :D
Actually I made fruit wine once myself, which is not as complicated as beer, but yeah, i drank it all myself hah
