Next Exit: Brooklyn - A Craft Beer Reunion

- In Episode 3, Hop Culture Magazine Founder and Untappd Director of Strategic Sales and Media Kenny Gould heads to Brooklyn, arguably the best borough in New York. 😜 Feel free to prove us wrong!
The entire Hop Culture team called New York home for many years, so in a way this was a little bit of a homecoming for Gould.
In Brooklyn, Gould hits up one of the most important breweries on the East Coast (hint: Other Half), one of the best craft beer bars in the country with a former Hop Culture alum (hint:Tørst), and much more.
If you’re looking for breweries with some of the highest-rated IPAs and mixed-fermentation beers in the country (not to mention top-notch coffee and spirits), taprooms redefining what it means to be a beer consumer, and an elite beer bar with spiritual guides instead of bartenders, you should probably cross the bridge into Brooklyn.
In classic New York fashion: This is a very big city yet with a small, tight-knit beer community that’s always coming up with something new.
As the Hop Culture team liked to say when they shared a beer, “May it always be!”

OH is absolutely top notch, at home and in person at the taproom. What they have been able to do to sustain their quality while growing is nearly unmatched.
Talea hit the nail on the head with their self-description. Really solid beer with great service and a unique in-person experience. Going to their taproom last year in Brooklyn, my wife and I had an awesome time and had amazing service. On another note, as a male beer nerd, I appreciate their movement toward other demographics (women, non-beer drinkers) without isolating or “offending” the typical crowd (white male), I think they balance this very well and it shows in their speech about their brewery and culture.
Other Half and Finback are always on my list when I visit Brooklyn. You were so close to Wild East, Strong Rope, Threes, and Grimm. You need to spend more time walking and drinking 🙂 Come to Cincinnati next!
Sounds good! What are your favorite Cinci spots?
@@untappd4695 Streetside, Third Eye, Urban Artifact, Madtree, Brink
@@untappd4695streetside is unmatched in cincinnati IMO. Might as well come to Columbus while you are on OH (only 90 minute drive, and you can hit Dayton on the way - Branch and Bone, Little Fish). Columbus has Columbus Brewing Co, Derive (my favorite), Hoof Hearted, Seventh Son, Combustion, Wolf’s Ridge, Land Grant, Somewhere in Particular, Dankhouse, Jackie O’s, and Pretentious to name a few.
After this - i want to go Brooflyn! THX Kenny
Have fun, friend! Cheers
Love Other Half, I've been to their DC Location a few times and have had many of their canned beers. Great location for untappd. I'd suggest another little secret nitch to check out is Spy Glass Brewing located in NH.
*Writes down Spy Glass Brewing * Thanks for the tip!
I'll second Spyglass. Aspect Oriented is one of my all time favorites
LOVE this series! Would love to see STL (Schlafly, Urban Chestnut, etc)
We've heard there's a brewery there called Side Project that's pretty good...
First time going to finback in Glendale Queens, on a Uber it was literally the end of a very residential street a little surreal.
Definitely adding these places to my list next time I'm in Brooklyn - thanks, Kenny! 🍻
Please do! Cheers
Was just at Torst yesterday. Best beer bar in NYC!!
The best!
Can't wait to be back in Brooklyn to try all of these! I love how Finback is also going in new directions, especially with coffee
Sounds like a road trip is in your future -- maybe even a Finback cold brew? Cheers!
keep em coming!
You got it! Any requests for breweries or cities you'd like us to cover?
@@untappd4695 yeah Boston, I’m in Australia but these vids take me on a virtual holiday
Oh man....Torst, I love it there when I visited! Love OH too, never been to the NY location but the DC location is FIRE!
These places need Cask!
I love Finback. Its a must almost every time Im in Brooklyn. Aside from the great beer, they have an amazing staff. Exactly the same could be said about Grimm. Wish you would've covered them. Loving this series. Jersey Please!
So good! Give us your Jersey recommendations, please?
@@untappd4695 I would highly suggest Brix City, Icarus, and Magnify. Also Kane and Ghosthawk. there are a ton but those are just my personal Favs. Would love to see you guys slide through!!
Thanks for including Other Half, their beers are incredible. I think their same-day home delivery service in Brooklyn got me through the pandemic single-handedly. Very sad that I don't live close by anymore, I miss their brews something fierce.
So good! Sounds like it's time to take a trip back for to enjoy a pint or two. Drinking anything good lately?
@@untappd4695 Yep plenty of great breweries here in SF Bay area: Humble Sea, Fieldwork, Altamont, and Almanac just to name a few. Send Kenny out this way!
They ship to 14 states now.
Off to New York in two weeks time definitely given me some ideas for hunting some craft beer
This episode and you were meant to find each other at the right time! Enjoy your Brooklyn brews, friend.
Fascinating series! Going to try these breweries when i visit.
Please do! Cheers
I've been to all the breweries you visited - though I went to the Domino Park location for Other Half. They're all good, and of course you couldn't get to all the breweries in Brooklyn, but the one that most deserved a spot, in my opinion, is Strong Rope. Their Gowanus location is a short walk from Finback, and their Red Hook place on the waterfront, with great views of the Statue of Liberty, is a must-visit brewery taproom. The beer is excellent, too.
Time for Pinta!
Great video, thanks for the tips!
Glad it was helpful!
I love it when business owners are 2 steps behind the trends.
Of which trend do you speak?
Fun fact: Tørst is Norwegian and means thirst or thirsty. Just wish some of those Brooklyn breweries would export to Norway! 🍻
We didn't know that! Thank you
Do Portland, OR next!
What do you recommend to drink?
Wild East and Threes should definitely be on this list. Other Half and Grimm got hype during the hazy boom but the aforementioned breweries are doing better stuff.
Wild East has great mixed fermentation beers. Nice taproom, too
Noted!
One Liver. I think that was a Bob Marley song?
Let's... get... together... and... drink... some... beer!
Also from that song “Is there a place for the hopeless sinner
Who has hurt all mankind just to save his own?” Do you think maybe he was talking about white people who gentrify neighborhoods like Brooklyn? 🤔
🍻
I only got one liver 😂
Would be good to talk more about the beer and less about the business.
Thank you for the feedback! What specifics would you like to know more about?
@@untappd4695
1. Do they have a core range or are they constantly changing or bit of both?
2. Which is the beer of choice of the person being spoken to?
3. "If people want to order your beers where do they go"
4. Which beers of yours do people tend to ask for/order?
5. why?
6. which would you rather be popular ie are there beers you cant brew for commercial reasons that you would otherwise brew?
