- The very end of the Eric Gales concert at the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, Tennessee in May 2014. Covers of Purple Haze, Don't Fear The Reaper, & the National Anthem, plus a little more. Needless to say, he killed this one.
Eric's playing at least for me is something otherworldly, inspiring and from the heart. He is one of a kind, a master at his craft.
Just discovered eric!
I love the way Eric just busts into whatever the fuck tune pops into his head. This is not planned, he doesnt practice these bits. SImply putting it, Eric Gales is the improvisation king.
The dudes he plays with have to be some of the best, a lot of players would not like playing with Eric simply becasue he is so spontaneous, you never know what the hell song he might break out.
One thing you can count on, it will be off the cuff, and brilliant.
Awesome vid thannks for sharing Ben.
Again, I appreciate all those who watched this & showed my page some love. Not only that, but I was glad I hurried up & ate lunch for the day to get a spot ahead of time & record this very front row.
I didn't know so many people besides in Memphis knew about Eric Gales. But thanks to all who support my page, once again:)
read about him in guitar magazine back in 1992 I think!
kickass debut album with the hottest fuzz solos in a long time!
bernhardtsen74 I saw him at the KeswickTheater in Glenside, PA outside Philadelphia with Indigenous, he blew me away. I bought his CD which he signed, and I've listened to it heavily ever since.
Ben Carroll well, i'm from the Netherlands and i'm quite into Eric Gales. Got a heads up from a friend from Brasil. Thanks for posting this.
Harrie Indewarrie hou de tourdate in de gaten. kan hem 15 oktober in de bosuil te weert zien voor 21.00 euries
Harrie Indewarrie Sure thing man. Was worth it to get there early enough for this front row spot to see a very talented brotha.
Eric Gales is such a phenomenon that you can't help smiling from start to finish in all his videos just like if you were there watching it live, fantastic stuff, no bad day can ruin it...
22:43 Jimmy has a big smile wherever he is .
Sonically Phenomenal, Captivating, Unique, Artistic, and Refreshing.
needs more cowbell
He's been doin' his thing since he was like a teenager. Started tourin' with Santana back in the 80s, I believe it was
eric is Santana's godchild for real Carlos is his godfather, and yea you troll around and find the 1988 school battle o t bands~I love his style and showmanship so honest and for real
Pure Tears of joy! I Completely understand Eric's tears! His Freedom on the Guitar has brought me to tears many times. & This video is No exception! He's The GOAT!!🐐🎸🔥🤘🏾
Still trying to wrap my head around the 13 unlikes.
Trolls

I remember seeing him play in a club in Corpus Christi TX many years ago, just after his first album, I believe
he was 17 years old them. He was excellent them. I'm happy he's still at it. Look and sound good Eric.
Keep on pickin' !
Looks like Buddy Miles on bass lol!
Many thanks for sharing this. He is one of my all time favorites. I found about him through a friend only a year ago, and have been inspired every since. I know that spot in Memphis very well. Not for you sharing there is no way I would have experienced this, again thank you.
It was definitely worth gettin' there early for front row and the large amount of camera battery it used up. Glad my uncle told me to go watch Eric.
Y.w. Yeah that was a great day & I made sure to get a front row spot to it, as well. Also met him after the show-he's a great shredder & a nice man. Thanks to all for the views.
I'm loving that woman backstage. I don't know if that's his wife, but it's so nice to see a Black woman truly digging some fine music.
That's his wife Ladonna. Idk her personally, but she seems like a very nice lady. I met Eric himself that day, right after bein' front row to this show, & he's a good dude.
Ben Carroll both really really good people
Talked to her for a sec after a gig recently. She seems like a real gem.
"Whatever t is my WIFE put a spell on me!" So classy to change the words. She must be a great lady, think she must have saved his life.
One of the most soulful performances I have ever seen. I am feeling very motivated. Thanks for the post. Amazing player!
I think this guy is really special
Im from phillipines and I always follow eric videos
Genius Axe player!...i have to see this chap ASAP!
Eric rocking like he always has but straight this time. Happy for you. Much love, Eric!
Found Eric one night looking for Jimi. Turns out I had it backwards.
Jimi led me to Eric. Gotta believe JMH is somewhere smilin.
God bless you Eric Gales, you are the master of spontaneous live improvisation ! ...
Eric Please, Please come to New York. Been following you for a while and I can't wait to see you again!
Incredible...kick drum sounds like a ripped speaker unfortunately...but still really enjoyed Erics playing.
Thank you for posting this! I've loved Eric Gales since my buddy turned me on to him at least a dozen years ago.God bless this man, cause he sure blesses God.
dude is a beast his brother Eugene has a better voice but not sure there's a better guitar player alive today IMHO glad to see he has escaped his demons and is doing his music in his hometown he is more then a Memphis legend he is nation wide THANX for the post
Yea, he's a one of a kind monster of a player. He deserves more recognition.
This dude is next level.
Not too many Rock guys can improvise with such fluidity & ease in Today’s world! It shows great talent & expertise! This medium will keep true talent in check! Otherwise it would b lost forever, we should all feel grateful for this! Someday maybe the world will connect with the truth & we will all be better off as a society! 10/25/2020
All music appropriates all cultures, and it’s a GOOD thing! Eric is the shizz! Keep bringing us all together, maestro! Damn that man can play!
It is so cool that I even applaud sitting in front of the screen))
Jajajaja este tipo es muy gracioso y un estilo único ,muy bueno
I could picture him being Ozzy Osbourne guitarist
That arrangement of the National Anthem damn near made me cry. Just brilliant!
His playing does that to me all the time. He pours his emotion into anything he plays.
dayum... 13.5k to my 750? just curious.... hell i redid the audio.. i DO NOT monetize the shit... mix our two vids together ya got some killer shit!!! Eric's a beast!!!!!!
?
way underrated --- complete autodidact other-world savant upside down strung genius..
Playing with the heart makes all the difference.....
Eric's one of the most free guitarists out there.
Eric is unpredictable , Great guitar player
I'm sure I heard a little AC/DC in that jam towards the end ! Another fine player who has a go at anything ! Has some great albums in his catalogue!! This man has a future indeed.
I think what I love most is the "do what I want to do" spirit!
He just gave me chill bumps all over. It's so nice to see someone who takes their craft to heart like he does. I love to hear him play.
Great, great guitar player. Great, great musician. Great band too.
✌🏽
Saw him live when the Experience Hendrix tour came through San Antonio last summer. He did a duet with Eric Johnson that was the highlight of the show for me. He was out in the lobby between sets just chatting with folks, seems like a truly nice guy. Can't wait for another opportunity to see him again.
Please come to Shreveport Louisiana!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
erics technical mechanics r mind blowing!!!!
this guy has it! i didn't knew him before but he has a long career =O
He doesn't even bother to restring it. Genius! Unconventional indeed, just like Hendrix.
Eric Gales best guitarist in the world
It's always amazing to see someone play a strat upside down
That’s not Cody wright :/
Man, Eric put all his soul in playing ! Amazing musician!
I got his autograph too
Eric is The young Hendrix.... in my humble opinion.
I liked Hendrix too, but Gales' is a way more technical and fluid player.
amazing performance, this man makes me remember Jimmy Hendrix :)
My uncle said one time, that if Hendrix had a son, that would be him
oh...maybe that is true, will be a gift from god to us!
Whats wrong with Eric at 2.58 ? the camera moves off him ,,something wrong !!
He always cries in his concerts
Just love him to death..
Been LOVING me some EG for many years!!nGlad to see he's back on the right track getting his thang on!!! Best Blues Man of my generation!
I love how he indulges himself....cant help but drink it in...
Wow! Something crazy just happened. A thought entered my mind about whether he played his rendition of the star spangled banner anywhere and just before I started to type it in the search box, I realized he was actually starting to play it!! That's crazy. I don't know what to say about that.
Saw him 1st time last night, been watching and listening to him like crazy, quickly fell in love with this mans talent and equally his energy just woww this dude lol shit he made me cry a couple times wow his spirit
the man is the best
which song is before Purple Haze
It's a montage of different songs but the primary song is Don't Fear the Reaper from Blue Oyster Cult.
here i am 10/ 2023 discovering another master!
He was at a show while I was in Hot Springs Arkansas a couple weeks ago too (this video was 2014) The agony of not having a ticket beforehand...dude...
Ever notice that Eric Gales guitar catches fire without matches or lighter fluid!!
Eric is the best
in the beginning, the first guitar solo is from Jimi Hendrix all along the watchtower... it fits for this :D
Wow. He just gives himself completely to the music. I was moved at how he got so touched at 2:50 that he couldn't go on for a bit. Some of it may have been related to being at home too. But man that's where it's at when it gets that good to you. Peace.
I know he's not quite as publicly well known artists with a lot of MTV airplay & such, but he puts a lot more passion into his music. The other guys who were there that weekend who fall into the mainstream category, seemed to play more in a style of "I just want to look cool", even though I still like some of their music too. I've had my share of 2:50 like moments at this same festival the last couple of years myself. Didn't cry, but almost did a couple of times. Had a lot of great artists blow my mind by the Mississippi River since 2012 & this brotha is one of 'em.
If there's two musicians that would make me cry for sure these are Eric Johnson and Eric Gales, Buckethead as well. I hope I can see them live someday. There's no problem in crying, it just shows you have a soul inside of you. Many people nowadays lost touch with their own souls, if they have any at all.
Coolest moments ever. Hardly anyone is so sincere with his instument since Hendrix.
Playing an upside down guitar like this is amazing. Hard to imagine how Jimi and he figured everything out.
Thanks to his grandfather who was the one who introduced this tradition on the Gales family. He is not left-handed, he was just taught that way since day one.
On my bucket list too see him once the pandemic is over hopefully in his home town
Holy shit! He gives me goosebumps. This guy is brilliant
Cool.
Erede del grande Hendrix.grande chitarrista naturale.audio non buono ma si sente il talento del chitarrista mancino.Dainese aldo
Hadn't heard of Eric Gales before seeing this video. Awesome musician. Truly gifted! Thank you for sharing.
Matt Clerici Sure thing, brother. Never knew it was gonna blow up with so many views in a year.
Awesome!!
How the fuck does he make his bridge pickup sound so good!?
The tone is from his fingers.
in the hands sir! all in the hands!
...right on the head!
Amazing video. I don't know how he does it...
Eric Gales for guitar president!!
It is amazing to watch a guy play the guitar upside down with such precision....
Even though he's not in the well-known mainstream like Slash, etc., that brotha's been a huge inspiration to me ever since the day I recorded this. "Hendrix Jr." in my book. Nothin' says "heart & soul" more than when he broke down on stage, but every second of this was worth makin' it to the vey front row too.
Ben Carroll Funny you mentioned Jimmi, who has always been my inspiration, because he played it upside down too. This cat right here, I had never even heard of before I accidentally found this video... He's special tho
+Lee Tate Nah, Hendrix restrung his guitar lefty but the instrument itself was upside down. Gales actually plays the instrument upside down because he didn't restring it.
+David White (Mr. No Chill) Oh wow....That's much more difficult then
actually Hendrix did it both ways, and at will, so does Eric Gales, yet not so much his brothers, family friends, they were shown a lot by Jimi and his cousin, we know as Guitar Shorty (read it in his CD sleeves, my expertise, haha)
Good dancer and he plays a badass guitar. Actually he plays a guitar right hand does the picking. The camera reverses it in the final mix😗😗😗😗😗😗😗😗 I bet beatovin would be rocken in his grave if he wasn't deaf. When playing his music my phone gets red hot with rainbow rays being generated.
even as a showman he is the Jimi Hendrix heir.
Like my uncle said, if Jimi Hendrix had a son, that would be him
he is
he aint hendrix hier that implies he is moving the art form forward not just taking old jams and amping them up!!!!
Yes, Eric Gales has received much more musical tuition than Hendrix.
metacosmos I got to say, though, I thank God Jimi didn't wear baseball caps. Eric has gotten better over the years, but he looks goofier. I liked it much better when he had the style of Jimi and SRV, before the country hick look.
Beale steet line is more of a joke every year. Seen this live was a 1pm show. not many showed. This was the best show I have ever seen . He is a beast live. Seen Eric with the Hendrix tour. Beale street music fest will begin to find problems not booking multi age talent such as Eric. 2018 will be my last year. what a shit line up.
How ironic that I should stumble upon this video for the first time, just three days after seeing Eric 'live' in the UK. This guy is just fucking genius!
Love working for him when he comes to Memphis
Eric is an amazing artist. He is playing upside down and backwards. Well done my brother. Much love and respect.
Lmao @ The old man @ 3:23.. "PLAY THAT THANG" PLAY THAT THAAAANG!!!! omg lol
Yeah, dude in the audience really got into it.
I saw Eric play at a club in Corpus Christi TX YEARS ago when he just made it on the music scene. He was only 17 and he was badass then,
Hes playing the strat upside down obviously....i wonder if it is strung as a right handed guitar as well? It appears so...great talent here....I am sure to hear alot more from this young man....Bravo....
Its strung regular... (you can see it)
Yep. Strung as it should be but played upside down. His skill is unmatched, in this regard. It's how he learned to do it and do it well, he does.
🎼musiC 🎵 🎶 t0 the b0ne🎶
A very well played blues jam.. MIND NOT BLOWN!! Still waiting for that..
Last night, saw local - just WOW !
He is he Jimi reincarnated? :-)
Sound is terrible though
Love Gales.....although he has the Fresh Prince of Bel Air look going on big time!
om i just looked and it is upside down and strung regular omgg
And he's actually right-handed.
great percussion sound
WOOOOOW!
He was at a show in the same city I was in a few weeks ago too. Man I was bummed out. But the day from this video I did get a picture with him
If he's this good now, imagine how good he could be if when he first picked up a guitar someone would have told him it was upside down.
mrrusss Playing guitar that way must have inevitably shaped the original style he has today though. While I don't know if he'd be better or worse, he'd probably be a somewhat different player.
+mrrusss There's a whole story about that, I don't remember all of it but his grandpa introduced this lefty thing on the family, I guess Eric saw his older brothers playing like that and imitated them since day one.
I doubt it would've mattered much. He is well versed in all styles of playing including classical playing like that. Very few can incorporate as many styles of playing into their own music as he does. He's a monster in his own right, regardless of how he plays the thing.
turn the mic down yo
This dude should do his own version of 'machine gun' Man, he can really play
Will smith on coke
Voodoo child intro...like srv in 1986...good blink of an eye...
anyone have this show in full HD?
The camera I used for this one is 1080 pixels. I missed a slight bit of it changin batteries tho.
the audio are cliping....can improve? i may help i guess
