Tight Iliacus Test and Release with The Hip Hook!

  • In this video, I will be assessing Mariah @coachmariahpainfreefitness using the typical method that I start with when assessing a patient for an iliacus or a pelvic rotation issue.
    She was anxious to try the Hip Hook but I thought we should determine what her issues might be prior and do a little pre- and post-test.
    You can see from her assessment that her pelvis is rotated and that when she used the Hip Hook it realigned. It’s magic!
    The iliacus and the psoas make up what is commonly called your "hip flexor."
    These 2 muscles have an important job, to connect the upper part of your body to the lower half!
    Although these muscles are also responsible for flexing your hip (bringing it forward), their main job is to help hold your spine, pelvis, and hip together.
    The iliacus and psoas are called the iliopsoas together. They often time contract and stay knotted up when the body is either too mobile or if those muscles are overused.
    Because we need them to stabilize us, activities like sitting, running, biking, kicking, and weight lifting are common causes of tightness along with too much stretching like yoga and dance.
    Pelvic rotation can create pelvic pain, SI joint pain, lower back pain, and hip pain.
    __________________________________________
    Created by a physical therapist, the Hip Hook is the world’s first tool designed for psoas release AND iliacus release. Just a few minutes a day with the Hip Hook can provide long-term pain relief to the lower back, hips, tailbone, knees, and feet. Tightness in the iliacus and psoas is directly connected to many different kinds of pain throughout the body because its tightness rotates the pelvis and twists the body out of alignment.

    Good afternoon, I have just ordered this device. I came up on your UA-cam page talking about the tight muscles in the hip area. I hope this really helps me because I have immobility in my left hip and walk with a cane. Yes, I have a neurological issue with my left side bc I had a drop foot but I was still able to walk around. I have been able to loosen up the hip(once I found out about the iliacus) but lifting my leg I cannot do. but everything you mentioned about having tight muscles I have. I am very healthy so very confused why my body is acting this way. hopefully, I have found the 'cure'. (my neurologist stated maybe the drop foot occurred after getting bit by an insect or by crossing my legs) and you say the body starts protecting itself so that's why I have immobility. I'm sooo happy I found you! I was hoping to find a video with someone with immobility issues but...I will keep you posted!

    Hello Christine,
    First off, congrats on your new product. Question: Who shouldn't be using the Hip Hook? I have scoliosis in my lower back. My left leg is shorter than my right, not too much about 1/8", but it's enough to throw my hips off. To the point when I am naked and looking in the mirror you can see that my left hip is totally lower than my right. I am 57 years old and only just started feeling the pain, in my spine, but recently had a lower lumbar radiofrequency ablation in January 2021. It helped with the pain in my lower back but not so much my left hip. I didn't really know what could be causing such fatigue in my hip until I started googling about it and found out that lack of movement, and exercise, and being a couch potato can cause weakness in your hip. OMG sorry for the length of this message. But back to my question: Can I use the Hip Hook? I really want to try it out but don't want to hurt myself. What are your thoughts and suggestions. Thanks so much.. Oh, I love your vids by the way ;) ~Denise

    I’m happy I found you after 18 years of pain and suffering. I was in a car wreck at 19 years old. My right leg is so tight and of course I’ve formed a bunion on my right foot. My question is: Is it normal when you touch that area and it causes excruciating pain to the point of shouting? Is this because my right leg is so much tighter than my left leg? Or is there an untreated injury (I know I have scar tissue in my spine per anesthesiologist) but have never had health insurance therefore I have not to addressed all my problems. I’m 37 years old and wondering if I can reverse all the damage using your techniques.

    • @AlethaHealth

      You should, in theory, be able to apply pressure to a muscle and it shouldn't hurt at all because it is not holding any tension. Based on what you described, it sounds like your right side is extremely tight. You should definitely consult a healthcare practitioner (such as a physical therapist) to begin identifying the root cause and addressing these issues). You can absolutely make improvements. Remain consistent and patient.

    Two questions, can I use the hook if I've had an SI joint fusion? Also, I have randomly felt the tingling on the front if my leg like you explained with the femoral artery. This happens periodically when I'm sitting or standing for a short period of time. I'm not pressing on anything or exercising, etc..

    • @AlethaHealth
      @AlethaHealth  3 роки тому +2

      We must recommend that you consult you healthcare practitioner first before using the tool to assess your particular situation.
      Typically, unless the SIJ fusion would prevent you from getting up & down from the ground or prevent you from using the Hip Hook against the wall, then you should be able to use the tool.
      The tingling could be coming from compressions being placed on the nerve from tight muscles. Tightness in the hip flexors often contributes to tightness in other muscles, like the TFL and other anterior thigh muscles that overlap or run closer to the femoral nerve.
      Releasing tension in these muscles may then help you reduce the tingling or pulsing sensations that you experience from time to time in that area.

    I recently purchased the hip hook. It sounds like it will help with lower back and knee issues I have had for some time. I have an anteriorly rated pelvis, one leg longer than the other, sit at a desk all day, etc. I had an appendectomy ~ 20 years ago and the scar tissue seems like it is in the exact place I need the hook to be placed. After a couple of tries with the hook agains the wall, that area seems very tender. I do not want to damage anything. Have you had any experience with this issue?

    • @AlethaHealth
      @AlethaHealth  11 місяців тому

      Thanks for reaching out. Applying pressure in the areas where there is scar tissue can be very tender, so you are doing the right thing by easing yourself into it with the wall technique. Continue doing that and adjusting the pressure as needed. Make sure that you can still fully relax and take deep breaths when working in these tender areas, as this will help relax the muscles and decrease their sensitivity over time. Consistency is key.
      You may also use the tool to apply pressure within the areas of the "release zone" that are further away from the scar. Releasing tension there should also have a positive impact on how your hips and pelvis are aligned to support improvements with your pain.

    How soon should I try the Hip Hook after a "flare up"? My body looks similar to the diagrams in "Tight Hip Twisted Core" where my entire torso is visibly pulled to one side when I have a "flare up" as I call it. Just intense pain & can barely walk... definitely can't drive for about a week. How soon should I begin trying to release that iliacus and align the pelvis after one of these episodes? TIA for any advice! I'm 37 and have had chronic low back pain/SI joint hypermobility after 2 natural childbirths.

    • @AlethaHealth
      @AlethaHealth  2 роки тому +1

      Hey there! We are so sorry to hear that you are experiencing so much pain. When experiencing one of these flare ups, perhaps one of the most important things you can do initially is to breathe.
      You want to get your body as relaxed as possible before and while using the Hip Hook, as your body may still be tense and in more of a "fight or flight" mode immediately following the flare up.
      Taking some nice, deep, & controlled breaths that use your diaphragm can be a great way to help calm things down before you then try to apply pressure into your muscles using the Hip Hook.
      Please let us know if this helps. Feel free to shoot us an email at hello@alethasupport.com with any other questions as it relates to this, as it may be easier to continue communication there on this topic. :)

    • @AlethaHealth

      Popping in the hip can come from the psoas or iliacus, or both. Releasing each muscle is ideal, after which you can perform other corrective stretches or exercises recommended by your practitioner.

      Stretching is not very effective for releasing muscle tension (such as a muscle knot). To release these, you need to apply prolonged pressure directly to the muscles which helps the brain begin to let go of the contractions in the muscles.

    Could the IT band shorten leg also?

    • @AlethaHealth
      @AlethaHealth  Рік тому

      It's not very likely that the IT band is causing this. It would be the tighter muscles surrounding the hips and pelvis that are twisting the pelvis out of position, which makes the legs appear to be different lengths. These same muscles could then be pulling on the IT band and creating tension along the outside of the thigh.

      An anterior pelvic tilt caused by tight hip flexors is something that has developed over the course of a long period of time (likely YEARS). One single treatment may help improve the symptoms, but will not fix the root cause.
      Continued application of this treatment will help "undo" the muscle tension that has accumulated, restore range of motion, and allow you to restore strength and stability around the area to hold your pelvis and hips in a better alignment.
      You are not magically "fixed" overnight after one treatment. It takes more consistency to address the root cause to truly fix the issue and keep the symptoms away long term.
