  • In this video, I would like to discuss the history of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona - Rolex's iconic chronograph and a watch which has broken the record for the most expensive watch at auction with a price of $17.8M. This video covers every Daytona from the original in 1963 to the present day.

Armand, I watch all your videos. But the 'Story of an Icon' series are my favorites, and especially the Rolex ones. Getting my morning coffee ready right now so I can savor this. Thank you for all the work you put into these.

Thank you Armand for your time. No one does it better then you at laying out such a clear & concise timeline in a very easy to grasp overview of this iconic watch as you do so well in all your other shows.

Thank you very much for making the video of Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. This is the long-awaited video and thank you for taking your time to make an informative and educational video, which is well delivered and professionally executed.
I am not surprised that the Paul Newham Daytona sold at auction for $17.8M, which has set a new precedence for time-pieces. One could say if paintings can sell for significantly millions of dollars more, it is only a matter of time before the auction prices on the time-pieces catches up.
Very much appreciated. Amazing channel, and I learned a lot about this iconic and sought-after time piece.

Another excellent show from one of the best in the business, and as for my favourite, I would say the ever-rose on the leather strap. Finally 17mil is way too much.

My absolut favorite is the 16520 black dial from the late 80s that you show here however there are a few which i almost loathe like the diamond incrusted version ghastly!

Great video. If Phillips Auctioneers showed this video as a lead up to the Paul Newman sale it would present a greater understanding of the model's evolution & importance.
$17M is crazy nevertheless. I wonder whether it will retain top position? I would say the only two watches that could possibly beat it would have to be John Lennon's Patek 2499 or Sean Connery's Rolex Submariner from Dr No and Goldfinger....and maybe on the long odds, the Dalai Lamas Rolex Datejust after he passes away.

I have a 116503. Feel your finger round the crown and the guard, then the
pushers. Then, feel the edges. Now, i also have the Jade Dragon SBGC207. If you
have one, repeat the same. Now, you can feel the difference between machine
made watches and handmade watches. If you want to know what 'sharpness' mean,
you compare it with a Grand.
Also, my son get rashes wearing the Rolex but not the Grand. Strange!

Now we know why NASA chose the Omega to be the official watch of the space program. Damn, that first Rolex was not planned out at all. Looked like a Hyundai with a BMW badge taped on it. Just terrible!

$17M+ for a watch is ridiculous , I can't understand the reasoning behind it. Paul Newman was an actor, not JFK, MLK,Tesla, Hitler or anybody of that magnitude. I mean, for a scratched up crusty old watch? I wonder what that watch is going to be worth a few generations down the line when people put in prospective what a watch for an actor they have never heard of is worth.
You can do much more with that money then be famous for buying that old watch. Donate that about to a college or hospital and have your name on the side of a building, if you want to be famous for something! Hell, feed a country! They might build a statue of you in a village somewhere, but instead your going to be famous for buying a used watch that really should be only worth a couple of thousand dollars, for $17M+!!!

With regards to rich people, it's a pissing contest. Donating money to a hospital doesn't get the same publicity. How many YT vids have you made, watched, or commented on that spoke on charitable donations??? For me, it's zero.
