Little Mac's whole gimmick is that he's an unbeatable ground fighter but horrible in the air. It just so happens that this doesn't work out so well in Smash.
I mean it also makes sense realistically... honestly little mac is the most realistic character in smash and probably of all of Nintendo because he is from New York and all of the strengths and weaknesses in boxing are in his move set

Competent Little Mac Players embrace the play style that the punch out games created, just stay calm and wait-- your opponent will open themselves up.

The Little Mac trailer was the first time I was legitimately hype for a character joining Smash... Punch Out was one of my favorite games when I was a kid, and I would always play the NES game from Virtual Console on the Wii U and the Wii reboot, so seeing Mac join Smash 4 completely blew my mind... Though many hype character reveals have surpassed him, I will always keep Mac’s Smash trailer in a special place in my heart... :)

They are also to protect the hands of the boxers. You can notice this if you compare old boxing stances and new boxing stances. Hitting someone’s head hurts the hand a lot, so headshots were not as common as they are now.
Little Mac will always be my main (unless Cloud ends up being better)! If you just stay away from the edge and know how to dodge really good, Little Mac is practically unstoppable.
I know punch-out wii graphics wise looked very comic like and i wish that if there was another punch out game that the game had the art style of the trailer... also this was my favorite trailer out of all the smash 4 fighters

I think it would be amazing. Have the story follow a mixed version of the nes and wii story(maybe do some of snes if you have to). And In between fights, have some moral conflict to keep it interesting. Maybe you could do an origin story of Mac; idk I just think it would be great.

The boxing gloves are made to protect boxers in the ring. Imagine how much more powerful Mac would be without his gloves
