Most comedians are liberals because, let's face it, good comedy is often offensive to prudish conservative sensibilities. Comedy can be subversive, and that's inherently a progressive thing. But, at a more basic level, conservatives usually get offended by talking about sex and using profanity. It's very rare to find a comedian who doesn't do that. Here is the historical perspective & proportion of what Leno did. First, he pushed Johnny Carson out... that seems to get lost in what came after. Joan Rivers had success as Johnny's permanent replacement, but Johnny felt betrayed when she sought her own show on Fox in the mid 80s... Garry Shandling was a great host, so was David Brenner. Letterman was another great one and of course had his own gig. But Leno seemed to keep ratings and though NBC had promised Letterman the gig, they betrayed Letterman while Leno was only too glad to get the King's Throne. When Leno's time was thru the next Great One, Conan, was again promised the seat... NBC did what they've always done. Carson didn't respect NBC. Letterman grew to hate them. Conan was destroyed by them... and Leno profited from ALL of it... So Carson, Letterman & Conan ALL created their own myths, created their own comedy, created their own culture, created their own audiences with the sheer will of their talent... meanwhile Leno's only accomplishment was that he profited from others brilliance and stole everything while NEVER creating a culture, comedy style, material & audience all his own... he just borrowed Johnny's. Leno is a TURD.
Wow this makes me despise Leno even more. Do remember anything about Leno? He made a ton of money sure but will people look back on him like they still do Carson? Respect Leno will never have! Fallon, Kimmel, Colbert, Conan, and Cordon all are a world about Jay!
And you had Jimmy Kimmel, who grew up a huge fan of what Letterman did. Letterman was sitting back and having a good time. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, ABC was trying to court Leno. Jay could have left at any time and, because of his contract, he could have premiered a show at ABC the very next day. So that was the context in which Kimmel put on the makeup, in which he went on Leno’s show and dumped on him.
Me too. Most talk show hosts talk behind the other guy's back. Jimmy did it to Jay's face and wormed away. Then talked trash about Kimmel later -- when he wasn't around.
ccrosbie33 Never heard Jay Leno talking trash about Jimmy Kimmel, even after this event on the 10pm show. What did Jay allegedly say? . . . EDIT: (SIX MONTHS LATER) Looks like ccrosbie33 is never going to answer me, doesn't it? Trash-talkin', truth-bendin' haters. *shakes head*
iNunky: You really kept track for 6 months? The dedication. ~I was genuinely interested to hear what this trash talking was that ccrosbie33 claims came from Jay. Very disappointed not to get a reply, too. iNunky: Btw, you replied to him a good 4 months after he posted it, why would he reply? ~ccrosbie33 fell silent a month after their post. Maybe he/she hasn't even seen mine yet. At least you replied to that nearly 8 month old post, iNunky. That's something.
You edited your post 1 month ago, so it says 1 month ago. Also if you kept track for 6 months, I think it's a safe bet to think you're still keeping track. Which you were. 2 - 0
I'm surprised Leno made it through the comedy club phase of his career if he couldn't have even made a comeback to Kimmel ripping him on his own platform.
Conan pushing Jay aside so he could get "The Tonight Show" was pretty bratty, too. I wish Jay had told everybody the truth instead of pretending he was okay with being forced out. That's the part of the story Jay haters and Conan fans don't like to admit.
Everybody sided with Conan when this was going on and they all bashed Leno for being the rat that he is. That should say something. Conan was screwed and that show rightly belonged to him
@@jshepard152 But still man, that was Conan's dream when he first decided to join this industry, that was to host the late night show. It just like when the president of a company promises you the CEO seat after the old CEO retire ONLY if you can keep up with great performance. And so you did your best and even spend a lot of time and energy to build the company. But when the day come, you were given the seat only for a few days before the president decided to degrade you to a plain office boy and then give you a sum of money to shut up. Shit must be a hurtful and humiliating experiences if you have any self worth.😂 lmao but I agree, 60mil was a lot.
A lot of them criticised Leno for what he did but doing it right to his face, on his own show? No prisoners, straight up murder. Jimmy's savagery knows no bounds.
John Smith He's been turning in his grave ever since he chose Letterman to be his successor, only to be backstabbed by NBC. If anything, he's laughing uncontrollably in his grave right now.
***** LOL, if you don't think he's not the type to hold grudges, then you don't really know Carson. He's been known to hold lifelong grudges. When Joan Rivers had her own talk show on FOX that competed with Carson's schedule, he never spoke to her again. And then you have this whole Tonight Show fiasco, in which he vowed never to make another appearance on NBC, and transferred his intellectual property (ie. Carnac The Magnificent) to David Letterman.
***** Carson's onscreen persona was completely unlike his offscreen behavior. He beat the living shit out of his first wife, Jody, he was known to be brooding, aloof and unsociable, and his treatment of Joan Rivers was petty and vindictive. Yes, on TV when he's rubbing a bush baby's belly or bantering with his guests in between telling people to go to the Slauson cut-off and cut-off their Slauson (or his brilliant handling of the Ed Ames tomahawk throw), Carson was certainly a masterful host of late night television, but by the time of his retirement his show with Doc and Ed was starting to look dated and unhip.
+Blue Whovian Watch the PBS American Masters bio on Johnny Carson. He was a complicated man, and absolutely held grudges. e.g. Joan Rivers as thaloh points out.
It is wrong but you can’t say a comedian that took over the tonight show when that was the best you could possibly do as a comedian is not funny because it simply isn’t true.
@@danepittman1383 He stole The Tonight Show from Letterman, who Carson had handpicked to replace him. He did this by exploiting the constant exposure Letterman had given him on his show-absolutely zero integrity, honour or sense of gratitude. He then followed up by stealing the show from Conan, who he lied to when he told him he would walk away from it in 5 years-a dishonourable opportunist. He's also a joke/bit stealing hypocrite, who sued someone over a joke they stole from him and after publishing his feelings over how it's wrong to steal someones creative efforts, went on to shamelessly and repeatedly steal from other comedians and creatives. Letterman's Small Town News became Leno's ripoff Headlines. Letterman's Stupid Human Tricks was rebranded Don't Try This At Home, when Leno stole the bit. Amongst the many bits he outright stole from Howard Stern, Jaywalking may be the most famous. Then there's all the jokes he rephrased, days after someone else had already made them. He's even directly lifted internet content, and without attribution, presented it as his own. As far as being funny, I'll admit that some of his lowest common denominator targeted crap was passable, but for the most part it pales in comparison to most of his brighter, more mentally nimble and much more clever and talented competitors. He was a terrible interviewer, who never let a cheap shot go unsaid, and almost always failed to rise to the occasion when in an unscripted situation. F him for stinking up late night for as long as he did.
I like the overwhelming support of the comedy community for Conan in that situation. The only people in Jay's corner were really out of touch celebrities and sycophants
Kimmel's got integrity, he didn't agree with what Leno did, and he told him to his face (and in front of a million viewers). Jimmy also has a massive set of...
I didn’t really watch late night TV back then but I love how every host came to Conan’s defense when Leno pulled that crap. Shows how much respect they have for him
According to the story of late night doc on cnn, jimmy wanted to talk about the elephant in the room, which was jay vs Conan and the show runners said sure. When he got the questions beforehand they were in no way related to that, so he answered the questions in a way that related to what he wanted to talk about.
Jimmy was especially mad because they told him they could talk about the issue and then right before the show, gave him the questions that had nothing to do with it. So, he decided to turn it around. It was awesome.
Leno was so short sighted to set himself up in this bit. Kimmel has balls the size of grapefruits and he jumped on this chance when it was laid at his feet. Risky move on Kimmel's part. Kimmel gets all time mad respect for this.
I don't really like talk shows outside of Ferguson but Kimmel has always been based. He doesn't back down, and while he plays the game he's not above cutting people down when he's pissed. Jesus, he just goes on and on lol that was beautiful. Poor Conan though... he really did get his shit pushed in there
+papi David Letterman was the most ruthless of them all, and I'm not surprised kimmel is too. His idol and whole reason for wanting to be in late night was because of Letterman.
I love Conan, Stewart, and Colbert. I'd watch them every night. Kimmel was hilarious and had great pranks. Ferguson was incredibly wacky. Letterman was that grumpy old man you'd watch when everything else was reruns. And Leno was that unfunny weasel that I'd never watch. I miss those days.
It's too bad I'm seeing most of the comments prefaced with, "I'm not usually a Kimmel fan but..." I think if people gave him more of a chance you'd dig his show. He's different than any other talk show host. When his show starts and he walks out, he immediately begins talking so the crowd gradually stops clapping so it doesn't become this long, drawn out admiration for the host. He just wants to start the show cause he knows all that shits fake. Other hosts do the exact opposite, repeating the same tired crap. Kimmel is a genuine dude and does a pretty good interview; I've never seen him be competitive when another comedian is on, I've never once heard a fake laugh from him, I've never seen him kiss ass or be fake, etc. He has some pretty good ongoing bits too like "Lie Witness News," which really illustrates how fucking stupid people are; and obviously Mean Tweets has had great success. Just look at his shows UA-cam channel - he easily has more UA-cam viewers than TV viewers, as most of those shows do nowadays. His pranks are great, despite some people thinking they’re mean spirited, because when his victims inevitably get revenge on him, he takes it very well. His heartfelt moments are also appreciated in an otherwise fake business. The man cried on Letterman’s final show and refused to do his show that Wednesday so people would instead watch Letterman. I mean, come on, he’s a sweetheart.
Kimmel did a bit on his show where he pretended to be Jay for half of on night. Jay called him up and asked him to be on his show to "talk about it" but was really trying to do damage control. Jimmie figured it out around the first question when he realised Leno wasn't gonna talk about it, and layed into him. Nobody knew Kimmel was going to do this (to everyone but NBC and Jay's amusement). Which, in hindsight was kind of stupid because Kimmel had stated he wasn't happy with Leno.
Leno kind of made a name for himself mocking the very people who made up his main viewer base... and he's obviously no more intelligent than they are. He was always pro-establishment and was leery of coming off as too subversive. You can have him.
never seen this. I like Kimmel, I think he's ok. not for me, but he's good to go, no issues with the guy. however, I am a big supporter now. he's definitely in my book of men after that.
This was a glorious moment for late night TV! Something nobody mentions is that NBC screwed it up from the start. They tried to capitalize on Leno’s popularity by creating a new talk show with Leno just like the Tonight Show except right before the local news (and right before the Tonight Show). Not as many people stuck around to watch more of the same. The business people behind the scenes were the ones who undercut Conan from the beginning with a weak lead-in that hamstrung the show. Because their names aren’t as public as Leno and Conan, nobody associates their names with failure and blundering.
I remember first watching Leno a few years ago and his first joke that night was about people from Jersey brushing their mullets. Does he still live in the 1980's or something? I immediately changed it.
conan is my fav talk show host and jimmy is my second fav....this mad me like him even more...HE ACTUALLY SAID THAT ON JAY LENOS SHOW?? I FREAKIN LOVE HIM OMG
never thought Leno was funny but I have seen him be quick with comebacks... but up against Kimmel it's no contest...all Leno can do is act like he's laughing it off
I still don’t understand this whole late night situation but I’ve recently become a huge fan of Conan (and Jordan Schlansky lol). Never watched much of Kimmel but now I gotta check him out too. This was savage, much respect to him 😂
I love Kimmel he has that brutal honesty about him that I admire. Jay fucked over Conan simply because he could and Kimmel saw this bullshit and simply wanted to remind Jay, "your an asshole and no one in this industry likes you." Kimmel and Conan are my favorite late night talk show hosts and always will be.
DWYS WYSD Damn right although I do think he is the funniest. There is 0 late night hosts who actually make me laugh physically with the sole exception of Conan.
I'm not a fan of Leno, but I do think he was treated a bit unfairly in all of this. He never promised Conan his job and didn't even know himself that Conan was set to replace him for a long while. When ratings went to shit he had the choice to either do what the network that had supported him all these years wanted him to do or refuse to do it and lose his job and Conan's job. Through it all he never really responded negatively to all the backlash.
You mean Jay Leno? Okay, he proved "The Tonight Show" could endure and flourish after Johnny Carson; won the emmy for best variety show; endured the ratings bruising from a bitter Dave Letterman to reclaim the #1 spot in the ratings for over a decade; got kicked to the curb by NBC when Conan got impatient BUT didn't vilify him or NBC for that indignity; was invited to return as "TTS" host when Conan resigned, and was still able to keep the show at #1 in the ratings till the day it was turned over to Fallon. Hm, not seeing where Jay killed Late Night Television.
I think I witnessed a murder.

Leno is a TURD.
this is so fucking beautiful man, God bless you.
love this!
Wow this makes me despise Leno even more. Do remember anything about Leno? He made a ton of money sure but will people look back on him like they still do Carson? Respect Leno will never have! Fallon, Kimmel, Colbert, Conan, and Cordon all are a world about Jay!
amen
And you had Jimmy Kimmel, who grew up a huge fan of what Letterman did. Letterman was sitting back and having a good time. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, ABC was trying to court Leno. Jay could have left at any time and, because of his contract, he could have premiered a show at ABC the very next day. So that was the context in which Kimmel put on the makeup, in which he went on Leno’s show and dumped on him.
Just Gained a lot of respect for Kimmel haha
I have a huge amount of respect for Kimmel now, wow, talk about lethal blows
Gall ery
You really kept track for 6 months? The dedication.
Btw, you replied to him a good 4 months after he posted it, why would he reply?
iNunky: You really kept track for 6 months?
Damn Jimmy is savage
I'm surprised Leno made it through the comedy club phase of his career if he couldn't have even made a comeback to Kimmel ripping him on his own platform.
Gotta love Jimmy he went in on a snake ass mufucka haha. No prisoners!
shaolintiger88 lmao
Conan, Ferguson and Kimmel are my favorites. Leno is just an old rich spoilt brat who can't keep his word and simply move on when his time is over.
There's the truth. Glad someone said it.
what about Fallon
Christopher Fox he's ok, but not my favorite ;) (it's only a personal preference ^^)
Conan pushing Jay aside so he could get "The Tonight Show" was pretty bratty, too. I wish Jay had told everybody the truth instead of pretending he was okay with being forced out. That's the part of the story Jay haters and Conan fans don't like to admit.
Gall ery This has some truth, but in all fairness Leno did indeed say that he was giving the slot to Conan. His ratings were starting to sag.
Everybody sided with Conan when this was going on and they all bashed Leno for being the rat that he is. That should say something. Conan was screwed and that show rightly belonged to him
Actually, it belongs to Letterman... ;)
Yeah, he really got screwed. What was his parting gift from NBC, $60 million? Yeah, such a victim. Wish they'd screw me that way.
@@jshepard152
He used a lot of that to pay his staff who also got canned after that fiasco
Conan's tonight gig was painfully desperate...he just couldn't get it going
Conan & Kimmel are the funniest and realest talk show hosts we have today. I can't stand Fallon and his fake laugh.
Colbert is good. Colbert is REALLY good.
@@mikeclifford8360 ...No. Not anymore.
@@mikeclifford8360 colbert got showed up by Jon Stewart just a few weeks ago. Tired of Colbert's endless political humor.

You and Mike Clifford, both have it wrong....Colbert is great and trumps sucks balls!
@@charlie-obrien 5 months later and still talking about Trump, I guess it is boring to talk about how great President Senile is doing.
As unfair as this was for Conan, the ensuing controversy inspired him, Kimmel and Letterman to be at the tops of their games the whole way through.
Tro
Agreed. Late Night TV was "can't miaa" viewing at the time.
you gotta like jimmy even more after that
Leno was speachless... did he ever acknowledge that it was a dumb idea to prematurley promiss the tonight show to conan in perpetuity on TV ?
Kimmel didn't hold back lmao
A lot of them criticised Leno for what he did but doing it right to his face, on his own show? No prisoners, straight up murder. Jimmy's savagery knows no bounds.
Johnny Carson would be turning in his grave
John Smith He's been turning in his grave ever since he chose Letterman to be his successor, only to be backstabbed by NBC. If anything, he's laughing uncontrollably in his grave right now.
*****
LOL, if you don't think he's not the type to hold grudges, then you don't really know Carson.
For a second I read Carson Daily on your comment lol I was like WTH
+Blue Whovian Watch the PBS American Masters bio on Johnny Carson. He was a complicated man, and absolutely held grudges. e.g. Joan Rivers as thaloh points out.
LOOOOOOOL Team Conan, Letterman and Kimmel!!!
Jay is a tool forever for what he did to Conan. And the worst part is he’s not even funny
It is wrong but you can’t say a comedian that took over the tonight show when that was the best you could possibly do as a comedian is not funny because it simply isn’t true.
@@danepittman1383 Leno was not funny, period.
@@weezadam tell all the people who laughed at him they didn’t know apparently🤭
@@danepittman1383
He stole The Tonight Show from Letterman, who Carson had handpicked to replace him.
@@CarbonTech19 maybe... but I enjoyed it letterman was never funny to me. Neither are any of the other late night host.
I like the overwhelming support of the comedy community for Conan in that situation. The only people in Jay's corner were really out of touch celebrities and sycophants
...and now that Conan retired from his late show on TBS to go to HBO Max, this vid never gets old🤭
Kimmel's got integrity, he didn't agree with what Leno did, and he told him to his face (and in front of a million viewers). Jimmy also has a massive set of...
Boobs?
Boobs?
This is by far my favorite video on UA-cam. My second favorite tv star defending my favorite one.
Ruining Conan only made him stronger.
Whatever you do, don’t blame Conan
OK its been 10 years and Kimmel sucks as a late night host - but this moments is great. Good for him.
It's amazing how Conan has done better on cable than Leno has ever done when he got his own show.
I don't really like talk shows outside of Ferguson but Kimmel has always been based. He doesn't back down, and while he plays the game he's not above cutting people down when he's pissed.
Jesus, he just goes on and on lol that was beautiful. Poor Conan though... he really did get his shit pushed in there
Just realize Jimmy Kimmel is the most ruthless yet funny late night host of all
i think you should check out conan if u like ruthless...he publicly rips on NBC for you know wat
+papi David Letterman was the most ruthless of them all, and I'm not surprised kimmel is too. His idol and whole reason for wanting to be in late night was because of Letterman.
I just now became a Kimmel fan. Now I have 2 talk show hosts that I can enjoy.
Fallon is a nice safe show for placid boring god fearin' folk
Fallon is a bore
+peartist2 What does Jimmy Fallon have to do with this video in any way? Do you mean Jimmy Kimmel?
+peartist2 What does Jimmy Fallon have to do with this video in any way? Do you mean Jimmy Kimmel?
That's insulting.
God fearing folk don't watch NBC, they watch Fox.
Jay deserved every little bit. And the guys in the chair stood up for the Conaw.
this might be the only time I’ve ever seen Jimmy Kimmel not break.
Wow, ... Jimmy never ceases to amaze me. Jimmy "balls of steel" Kimmel.
“And then there was this thing where he could stay on if he moved his show to 12 but I knew he wouldn’t do it so it’s a double whammy!”
Anyone heard Dave's voice at the last second of this clip-"That's right". Classic David Letterman
I mean...i heard people like Letterman standing up for Conan... but this is just...an amazing piece of justice
I already liked Kimmel before, but now I like him even more.
Today Conan ends his show on TBS. I'm obviously going to do a tribute by watching all these videos.
Oh man, Leno did not see this interview going like that!
Jay had nothing without his cue cards.
DANG!!!!!! Respect!!!
Not a big fan of Kimmel, but man he was legendary there what a guy!
Kimmel completely dissed Leno on his own show that was amazing.
i dislike kimmel a lot but he ate this ONE thing
This really was the peak of that man's career
Conan is awesome.
Without Letterman none of those people you watched would have had careers-- Letterman is by far more respected than anyone u listed.
Thank you Jimmy Kimmel!!!
It's too bad I'm seeing most of the comments prefaced with, "I'm not usually a Kimmel fan but..."
I think if people gave him more of a chance you'd dig his show.
Holy hell that was amazing. Why was Kimmel even on Leno's show like that? What is the context here?? Your description is nothing.
Which, in hindsight was kind of stupid because Kimmel had stated he wasn't happy with Leno.
god damn that was savage af
Here we see a VERY rare W from Jimmy Kimmel
The late night wars was a magical time for late night tv.
Alright Kimmel, you have my respect.
Tip my hat to Kimmel.
I remember first watching Leno a few years ago and his first joke that night was about people from Jersey brushing their mullets. Does he still live in the 1980's or something? I immediately changed it.
I thought he did it to open his show but... Nope! Right to Leno and it was AWESOME!!!
conan is my fav talk show host and jimmy is my second fav....this mad me like him even more...HE ACTUALLY SAID THAT ON JAY LENOS SHOW?? I FREAKIN LOVE HIM OMG
never thought Leno was funny but I have seen him be quick with comebacks... but up against Kimmel it's no contest...all Leno can do is act like he's laughing it off
Dayyum Kimmel put him on blast thoooo!!!!!
FINALLY: What I was actually looking for when I searched 'kimmel leno'. Cheers guys.
I didn’t know about this. Jimmy earned my respect.
Can’t help but wonder if Leno’s writers were secretly on Team Coco.
That was brutal af.
I remember watching this when it aired. It made me go over to Team Coco even more!
I still don’t understand this whole late night situation but I’ve recently become a huge fan of Conan (and Jordan Schlansky lol). Never watched much of Kimmel but now I gotta check him out too. This was savage, much respect to him 😂
Leno knew kümmel didn't like him why would he have him on .
Jimmy Kimmel destroyed this dude... He had no come back.. lol he literally had nothing
I'll give Leno credit. He didn't have to take it on the chin like this.
Ferguson is great
I like conan, not the funniest but unique humor, he humbly picks at himself on stage, he's loves all and loved by all
DWYS WYSD Damn right although I do think he is the funniest. There is 0 late night hosts who actually make me laugh physically with the sole exception of Conan.
I'm not Jimmy Kimmel fan, but this made me run around naked only wearing my grandpa's pants on my head.
Good on ya Jimmy :)
only time i've liked Kimmel!
Back when I watched "Win Ben Stein's Money", I never saw Kimmel making it as far as he has...
Jimmy Kimmel is definitely the most savage of the late nights hosts
That was great.
JAY LENO is the Michael Jordan of Late Night!
He was # 1, left, returned, & retired # 1
Are you high?
Ravi S no. he's just stupid.
Yumpie Oo check the ratings dum FUG
***** He just had Jay on the show last week. They're friends, and Fallon's ratings are great.
