This is my all time favorite Disney song. It captures manipulative tactics so well with Gothel degrading Rapunzel at the beginning to tear down her self confidence, mild victim playing, and always gaslighting the shit out of her! She reminds me a lot of my own mother, and if it weren’t for this movie, I likely never would have realized that that kind of behavior is not normal, and that it’s damaging. Easily my favorite Disney movie too. I’m gonna go watch the movie for the millionth time now.
Mother Gothel was so manipulative, evil and she looked so scary in this scene but I forgot all of those in the end because I was so impressed with that high note at the end. It was just so dramatic in a good way. The voice actor sang it so well.

One thing I could never get over is how Ryder didn't hear this echoing through the woods. Like, she had some really high vocals, you think he would have heard the pipes on her, right? Hahaha
I never understood why at first I connected so much with Rapuzel as a child. As an adult, I can clearly see that now, I was sheltered for all my life, kept clueless and innocent being under my mother's wing and she purposely wants me to always be dependent on her. For once, I was the happiest I'd ever been and even have feelings for someone, and she acted almost just like Mother Gothel. All this time I've had a narcissistic mother who's manipulative and controlling. This is one of the most realistic Disney villains I've ever seen, and it's quite terrifying to think there are actual parents out there like her.

This song still to me to one of the best Villain songs Disney have done, so good that fit perfectly with the Renaissance villains songs like Ursula, Jaffar, Scar, not better but easily if this one come out in that period I think will be consider another classic.....hell I think it is, and with the lack of Villains in general by Disney, it was the last time we hear a Villain song in Disney, I hope WISH bring villain songs back and hope they have do a good one.
What I think is cool about this movie is that the Disney animators used Donna Murphy (a Broadway singer and the voice of Gothel) as a reference to make sure they made the type of singing that Gothel is doing here look realistic.
