A very good chance to do a 'What Makes Chibson a Fake Gibson Les Paul' series. I know from the late 70s and 80s it was fairly easy to tell with the truss rod and the control cavities but now some of these companies are getting really good.
You can still judge by the truss rod cavities in 100% cases, they're still using Allen keys. They also don't stamps their serials and never uses nitro. Still easy nowadays.
I think I know why that company ghosted you. They threw their back out carrying around those massive balls it took for them to send you a counterfeit guitar as part of some promotion they wanted to work with you on.
Good theory... but this is essentially like eBay trying to sponsor my show and giving me a budget of $400 to "pick out" one of their millions of items from their vendors that they buy and send to me. They didn't know about the "Gibson" part either
Anytime I have a chibson go through my hands the word “clone” is etched on the headstock when it leaves my hands. I sold one that a week later was on Craigslist done up to fool someone. I thwarted one sale but it did end up selling somewhere for around 1000. Never let that happen again. There’s people out there that just don’t know the differences.
Illegal lol. This America , there is no laws , that is unless you’re a Republican and even if you get charged I’d bet the farm on it that you walk. Thank Soros and Brandan.
Sad thing is that some of the Chibson quality is so much better than some newer Gibsons. I myself despite having a few Gibson products including an 89 MIII and A 2009 Gary Moore BFG am more of a Jackson or Charvel man.
Technically you can say Gibson has fit-n-finish problems. overall quality can refer to the woods and materials and electronics..ect that are used. it also lends to build techniques. much of your build cost is in time. in business you have two things to work with: time & space. but I know what you're saying, I like modern Epiphones. some copies are getting that good.
I've been really lucky with both of my gibsons. 2004 es 335 and 1997 r8 and no issues at all. Tuning stability is perfect and great playability. I have played some that just fall out of tune easily but that's an easy fix. Nothing can be as bad as the murphy lab issues with the paint falling off haha

Yeah but sometimes they forget or just send the first guitar of the model without looking if you specified no logo. There's a lot of ppl having these issues
Yeah I appreciate showing how to spot a fake. I bought a chibson when I first starting playing thinking I got an awesome deal until I figured out what really happened. Maybe a full episode with side by side comparisons if you haven’t already done one. Thanks for all you do!
@@23ravensby98 It seems about 50/50 as to whether they'll send you one without the Gibson logo or not. Problem is they've got most of the parts pre-made and are waiting to assemble them for you. So all their necks say "gibson" on them in some factories.
@@doctoribanez i ordered it on ebay. I had no idea it would say Gibson on it, so i was surprised. There was a sticker over the headstock and when i took it off i had a Gibson!

Great episode as always. Elderly Instruments was a place I had heard of in 1985, but in my work, I got an assignment which put me in Lansing once a month for about 10 years. Needless to say, I made the time to find them. It is an older house on a corner, and nicer people you could not find. I bought a Custom Shop L.P. Bantam Elite in Ruby from them, and others, plus a Nighthawk Custom in Natural, which was amazing. Bought many others over the years. as well as Fenders there. It is worth the trip and their prices are fair. Two Thumbs up for Trogly and Elderly.
My "Chibson," story: Back in 2016 I bought one for sh!ts and grins, I have several REAL GIBSON LPs, some of which I modded with TonePro hardware and BKP pickups. I had also aquired an Epiphone double neck (which i modded as well). Now enters the Chibson- I used the hardware I removed from the Epiphone (except the tuners, I used real Gibson) I did the 50's wiring with paper in oil caps, and put in a pair of Seymour Duncan Whole lotta Humbucker, i had laying around. I loaned this modded Chibson to a friend who has a guitar collection as well. Months later, I went to his house and jammed on the Chibson. First he let me play his Ibanez loaded with BKP Blackhawk pups. I played it for bout 30 minutes and my ear adapted to that tome. THEN I picked up the Chibson just to see the difference.... much to everyone in the room's amazement.... The chibson with Seymour Duncan's ACTUALLY sounded fuller and had more presence than the Ibanez with the Bare Knuckles. Believe it or not.
After watching the video of the guy who made the concrete guitar, then the custom shop Fender cardboard guitar and the guy who strung strings between 2 work benches and added a pick up I am pretty much sold on Pick ups being the #1 important component in sound. I don't believe in tone wood anymore.
Yeah i briefly had gibson 57s in my chibson. Very versatile guitar - sounded grear. Put the epi stamped pups back with original harness. Sounds quite good - a real player. I will mark clone on it though
@@a.j.garrett9639 even there is a study from university of Paraná “Sobre o acoplamento corda-corpo em guitarras elétricas e sua relação com o timbre do instrumento”, the study concludes, the tone wood is a myth
3:30 as a woodworker, I can't help but be impressed with the sanding finishing job, That is a lot of exposed end grain, to sand down end grain to make it look smooth and nice takes a lot of work, even if they are machine sanding. 8:30 I never understood that, if they would just stop trying to copy everyone and just let their cheaper guitars and other products be what they are, they would probably sell a lot more products. just the fact that they steal someone else's name and stamp it Made in the USA or anywhere other than, Made in China! is a total insult and puts them on the blacklist.
Yes, that’s why companies like Donner, Glarry and Harley Benton have rose to fame in recent years - even if most of them just are rebrands of bulk guitars that are purchased
Yeah that was my buyer's remorse with my Chibson. . . I impulse bought seeing I could get a $4000+ guitar for $250. . . I should have investigated the details of chibson to find their superiority to gibson is in the customization aspect. Want a SG _Diablo_ body with a left-handed Tony Iommi signature fretboard on a right handed guitar (so the crosses are upside down)? Gibson would just tell you "not only no, but HELL NO" or "That'll be 10 grand!" Chibson says "okie dokie, we charge you extra fifty for customization, so $300!"
When you unboxed that black Gibson case my mind wandered a bit and I thought, "I should get my Joan Jett out and play it". To my surprise, you pulled a Joan Jett out of the case! Mine was a pawn shop find. I saw the lower bout sticking out from behind another guitar behind the counter and said to the guy "Hey, is that a Joan Jett Melody Maker?". He got it out and I bought it. I got a great deal IMO, too.

I received a fake Chibson although I did not order a guitar with Gibson’s name on it. I ground out Gibson, filled it and finished it black. The guitar seemed like it was truly a Epi, so I put Epi pickups and controls in it. It’s just an un named guitar, nothing more.
I’ve never had a snark that wasn’t immediately broken. Buy the daddario clip on. Way smaller, not broken right away. Wish they had rechargeable ones though.
Watch out knocking Chibsons, with some work and replacement parts they can be on par with the best Gibson's out there. I would know, I have one and it's hard to put down. Light back gold top.

Amazing that a tiny little upstart company in San Dimas, California with only 135 employees in 1985 were even influencing the big boys at Gibson and Fender.
Cool Chibasonic! I would play it because I’m not a pro or collector. I will play anything that works nicely. I would probably put an inlay where is says Gibson.
I took a chance on a Chibbo and it plays and looks fantastic. I'm a player and just don't have the cash to be a collector. The flaws are nit picky. I took a gamble and I'm not sorry. It wasn't supposed to have the gibson logo, but they put it on anyway. I'm mostly a strat player so the chib is my humbucker guitar and it's a definite keeper. I have guitars to play music.
@@davidmarks5400 it’s a great time to be alive when it comes to guitars! There is so much competition in the market, and the results are great deals for anyone who isn’t putting stock in a certain brand. I’m Grateful.
@@neilpatrickhairless it goes to show that it’s the soul of the musician that people pay to hear. Not the sound of a particular brand guitar. I love it.
There is also Melody Maker SG's too, same slim headstock, had really cheesy sounding single coil pickups on them too. With better pickups it would have been a great sg guitar.
My chibson headstock broke. White l es paul with a knot in the wood in the neck near the nut. Couldnt take the pressure and snapped off. They do have epiphone stamped on the pups. Paid 300 for it - could have sold it for 2grand but won't - a forgery should be sold as such
Joan Jett, covered in sweat... held her Melody Maker over her head at the end of a show... looked right at me .... and didn't throw it into the crowd!!
The MIII is quite an interesting guitar. It sort of reminds me of the Iron label Exotic I have . It is a combination of 7 exotic woods with mother of pearl inlays plus MOP binding and an Iron Label branding on the headstock. I wasn't looking to pickup such a guitar but a friend was looking to unload a few instruments including a 1969 FJ 230 12 string acoustic. He's particular about who he sells such instruments to. He wouldn't sell things like that unless he knew they were going to a good home . That Chibson is actually a really good looking guitar. I wonder it plays as good as it looks. Is that real Grovers on it? They even put a made in USA stamp on it. Cant remember which brand it is but one of the tuners I have has tuning for standard 440 plus alternate tuning and tuning for bass and violin
Well, maybe put the Chibson Dragon in display with the phony Slash Snakepit. Those inlays are B-E-A-utiful examples of real Mother of Toilet Seat, the Grovers look phony, and I'd love to see the pickups, pots, and wiring, plus the truss rod nut.
It give that to a kid as a beginner guitar. After i modified it enough to not be mistaken or resold as a gibson. it paint over the series number or put fake marks on it.
A guitarist on our praise and worship team at church "specializes" in Gibson MIII guitars. I believe he as a collection of them. Not crazy about the look of the natural one, but overall they have a pretty cool look.
As this recession deepens, I expect the prices in the collectors guitar market to decline substantially. It will last 2 to 3 years then start to come back slowly.
No way elderly was mentioned. Never heard anyone talk about my local shop. I love elderly, coolest guys ever and they’ve helped me expand my guitar knowledge so much
ELDERLY GUITARS is a AWSOME STORE. . About 1 1/2 to 2 hours from me in Lansing Michigan . Bought my 62 Hofner there . They had a ton of Ric s Gretsch's Fender's Gibson And their Acoustic room is excellent as well . Worth Checking Out Name is Eldery Instruments
I've purchased LP style guitars without gibson branding on them. You have to be _VERY_ specific with what you want, and confirm more than once. They'll usually show you a picture of the guitar before it ships and you can double check your specs then.
How does someone contact you about a guitar your looking for. I have a line on a Gibson Blues Hawk with P-90’s Blue in color. And by his words “Gibson Blues Hawk made in Nashville on September 12th 2000, production number 205, in collector's pristine condition”
Where can I get a chibson? I don’t have money for a Gibson and I just want a guitar to hang on my wall i don’t care if up close it looks bad or sounds bad I just want one as art like owning a hand painted art compared to a print. Anybody know a place?
DH Gate, Ali Express, Ebay. Good that's what you want because they come as "wall art". If you want playability you have to finish the fretwork and set it up. If you want good sound you have to replace the pickups and pots, again they're there for LOOKS, they're basically microphones, you can talk into them and hear yourself in the amp. If you want it to stay in tune you have to change the "grover" (also counterfeit) tuners. Do all that and you've got a functionally equivalent Gibson (its actually a CNC printout of an Epiphone file) product for THOUSANDS less $.
I have to be honest…a guitar player friend of mine bought two Chibsons, a fake Les Paul and a fake 335. He replaced the pickups and bridges (maybe tuning keys, too-not sure) and had them set-up by a professional tech…and while the Paul was just ok, the 335 was incredible! Tone for days and a killer neck/feel. I guess, the point being, you CAN occasional get a Diamond in the rough.
The reality is, for most guitar brands, there will be amazing examples, and awful examples. And, because electric guitars are simple instruments, after a professional set up most are going to be at least good, if not great instruments.

Trogly is right about the MIII, it’s an excellent super strat. I bought one 6 months ago and after a week I finally got around to checking if the truss rod worked and and it turned out to be frozen, so I had to send it back…
I had a 1991 Mlll standard in candy apple red that I sold a few years ago. I was the only owner. I never could get used to it. The middle pick up always got in my way. Which is why I don't play strats.
Bought a Chibson off of eBay. Tried to sell it a year later and specified it was a "Chibson." eBay pulled my listing because they don't support the sale of fake guitars. WTF?
I bought a chibson Firebird, Real Nice($400), I took a dremel tool to the LOGO and stamped a couple X"s on serial great player but like you said, it would have been a keeper if the logo was vacant.
I have a Chibson that is masquerading as a Deluxe in Trans Black. I bought it for £200 knowing what it was, as I was interested to see one. At first glance it looks really nice hanging on the wall, but there are so many indicators that its not a genuine Gibson. Even mother nature didn't like the thing, as an inexplicable event happened where something fell and hit it, leaving a dent in the body. I gave it to my local guitar doc to appraise, and his only comment was "I've seen worse necks", which made me laugh.

I know a dude who plays several Chibs in a really popular band while touring and nobody knows it. And he has "I've won a few Grammys" money.
I love it.
Hi Trogly, would you do a story on the original 65 melody makers? They look wicked cool!🤯😍
There is also Melody Maker SG's too, same slim headstock, had really cheesy sounding single coil pickups on them too. With better pickups it would have been a great sg guitar.
Elderly Music in Lansing, MI. My favorite music store.
❤
I’m in Michigan, Elderly is a great store. Their Luthiers are amazing as well.
So Gibson can make stratocasters but no one else can make, let's say, a flying V?
There are flying v's are everywhere actually
I’m all about the poly tune clip. Best display and the build quality is awesome. I don’t use the poly tune feature often, but, it’s a sweet tuner.
I'm liking that M-III. The Chibson is pretty cool looking, with the dragon motif. If only it said "Chibson" on the headstock....
Nice unboxing! You ordered it faster than I could post it to our Instagram. 😆
It give that to a kid as a beginner guitar. After i modified it enough to not be mistaken or resold as a gibson. it paint over the series number or put fake marks on it.
Trogly, how can I get in touch with you directly? I would like to know, if you can give some evaluation on an 82 Les Paul
I don't foresee a comeback since the baby boomers are all going to be leaving us within the next 10 to 15 years.
No way elderly was mentioned. Never heard anyone talk about my local shop. I love elderly, coolest guys ever and they’ve helped me expand my guitar knowledge so much
Hey does anyone know if the mark 3 ever had lefties issued? Even re-issues would be fine!
Where did you get this guitar. Thank you.
Z is for late. Chloe is on time out. Dogs should not bark at the neighbors.
Hey Sgt! 😃 congrats
@@scottbogfoot thank you brother
You just won the fabulous Wallmart award for the very first comment you are absolutely amazing 🍪 🍪 🍪
How much for the gibson dragon ??? Is it for sale ???
What website did you find this guitar on?
ELDERLY GUITARS is a AWSOME STORE. .
About 1 1/2 to 2 hours from me in
Lansing Michigan .
Bought my 62 Hofner there .
They had a ton of Ric s Gretsch's Fender's Gibson
And their Acoustic room is excellent as well . Worth Checking Out
Name is Eldery Instruments
❤
That first strat ish guitar was pretty awesome. I wish they would bring those back
I almost forgot about the Lil Wayne guitar. Any news about it?
Trogly, would you review a Reverend Club King 290? Great semi-hollow guitar with solid wood construction.
And by his words
“Gibson Blues Hawk made in Nashville on September 12th 2000, production number 205, in collector's pristine condition”
what website was this for the dragon knockoff? also what vendor?
Isn't the dragon guitar's bridge on backwards?
Hey Trogly, where'd you get the chibson from?
Nice video Trogly. A little bit of everything.
It would be really cool to check one of these out for myself! Any links?
I think with fake gibsons you can ask for a blank or say your name on the headstock
. . . and you'll get it about 50% of the time. . . the other 50% they'll send you a "Gibson" headstock anyway.
The point is that they're made by CNC machines now. . .
Hey Trogly, how did that Chibson play and sound? For some of us, those things matter a lot more than the name on the headstock.
Makes good firewood and has great tone when heated up.
@@jimherleva4541 All that matters is the name on the headstock, right?

I always liked my '85 Q2000 Custom Shop over my buddy's MIII. Damn, I miss that guiter.
I was checking out a Gamma 50 amp. Are they any good for my grandson? He will be starting guitar soon.
@@lettuce_spray great to see you. Thanks for the feedback.
I want to get a Floyd-Les Paul like this. Is it for sale?
Trogly is right about the MIII, it’s an excellent super strat. I bought one 6 months ago and after a week I finally got around to checking if the truss rod worked and and it turned out to be frozen, so I had to send it back…
Should get yourself a white board and plot everything out what you order and when it's coming in. so it's easier see what's in the pipe.
Will you be selling chibson guitar? Love your shows very informative
Can't, he'd be selling a known counterfeit.
@@sassycat He could "de-counterfeit" it.
A Gibson made Strat...thats not playing authentic, though.
I had a 1991 Mlll standard in candy apple red that I sold a few years ago. I was the only owner. I never could get used to it. The middle pick up always got in my way. Which is why I don't play strats.
Not gonna lie I wouldn’t mind one of those particular Chibsons- good mod platform
You would not mind them no. They're factually a CNC printout of the Epiphone files. Just plan on upgrading everything metal.
I have a MIII standard with a really nice flame maple board. Really nice guitar.
There is a nice red one up in a local store.
the snark recharable tuner is pretty decent
Is the Chibson 4 sale?
Bought a Chibson off of eBay. Tried to sell it a year later and specified it was a "Chibson." eBay pulled my listing because they don't support the sale of fake guitars. WTF?
Really the best edited(ing) video you’ve done Austin. Great job, good episode!
I bought a chibson Firebird, Real Nice($400), I took a dremel tool to the LOGO and stamped a couple X"s on serial
great player but like you said, it would have been a keeper if the logo was vacant.
Here’s a crazy idea, Trogly. If you find a beautiful guitar that you really love…keep it!
have you ever reviewed the 2014 "long scale" les paul? you should. i missed buying one. i think they didn't make too many, maybe 250 ?
No yet, but one day I will
I have never seen the Gibson M3, in the 80s I was working in a factory 12 hours 7 days a week. I assume this guitar came out in the 80,s
Early 90s
@@Trog they did miss the party!
The last Gibson is cooool! That would have been great to hear the actual music instrument.
