If you want to skip straight to the install, then scrub up to: 2:53
Here are the sizes I talked about in the video
Nuts for the mounting bolts that came with the can: 6 x 1.00
Nuts for the studs what are already in the engine bay:

As a 20 year old with an xterra who wants to learn more about cars and the xterra itself, I thank you for your videos
That’s awesome man. Glad to hear! Thanks for watching.
guys found you channel about year half ago. It was about replacing blower motor.
Excellent tutorial! I have the same oil catch can, only black.
I have installed mine right at the PCV inlet of the intake. This way I have minimized the length of tubing going from and to the can. Anyway, the amount of crap collected in the can makes it a mandatory upgrade for this car, IMO. I like a little dipstick. In fact, you can remove of the oil/water with the syringe w/o unscrewing the bottom cap. Please do a follow up video during your next oil change.
Awesome video man. As usual, very informative and educational. Keep up the awesome work!
Thank YOU for watching.
I really appreciate your videos - thank you for taking the time to share this work.
It’s my pleasure. Thanks for taking the time to watch. Have a good weekend!
4:00 that’s where the recirculating pump goes for rear automatic hvac. My pathfinder has one so I’m trying to figure out where I want to mount the catch can now. Btw thanks for your videos! I’m going to be replacing my timing chain shoes using your video as a guide this spring.
Nice! Thanks for letting me know. I hope your timing chain guides go well!
Thanks so much man. I’ve needed a few ideas on how to tidy up the original can install. This vid is money!
💪🏻
Its so easy and helpful installing the oil catch can I will do it for my car
Just installed the catch can on my 2017 Pro4X . Followed your video and installation wasn’t that bad. Good job, thanks. Step by step really helped !👍
Do ya needa baffle?
I thought they stopped making Xterras after 2015!
I finally got the catch can installed, similar to the way you did it. Only I'm confused, there was another video on same nissan truck but he put hoses opposite way. I wish my catch can could have come with instructions instead of second guessing. Thanks for the video though, you helped me out a lot.
I made my on catch can for my 2003 Camry. I bought 24 oz aluminum drink tumbler made for hot and cold drinks. It came with a screw on lid with a rubber o ring seal and a hole for a straw. Paid five bucks for it at a thrift store minus the straw. I installed a small drain valve in the side near the bottom, used the straw hole for the return line fitting and installed the inlet line about a 1/3 of the way down from the top. Since the tumbler got smaller from top to bottom i was able to install a baffle just above the inlet line. With the baffle above the inlet any oil mist stays in the can and allows the vapor to recirculate.
With Harleys we install a filter on the end of the hose and vent it to the atmosphere. Recirculating it back through a car engine is bad enough but with a Harley the carbon will build up quick in the chambers and on the valves.
It builds up in the heads on a car because the air fuel mixture from the car doesn't burn hot enough to burn it out and keep it clean. Unless you are using an additive in the fuel on regular intervals.
Btw way mine is located up front down low beneath the headlite and battery. Easy to open the drain when i change oil.
Great video that will help out a lot of people and that color blue is my favorite color too👍
... I bought the Same catch can.Your video was Very helpful !!
Nice!
Took me 1h20m start to finish including prep, cleanup, and making a bracket. Good practice for my upcoming IMS install and spark plugs once the parts land.
A 5"x5" T bracket ($3 from Home Depot) works pretty well. Bracket is zinc so it drills out pretty easily. Bolt spacing on the X is 9cm. I added about 4mm of washers - a neoprene one against the firewall then nylon - behind the bracket to help it rest better. Time will tell if they can withstand the temps. 7' of fuel line will leave you some working room. If you absolutely can't get that clamp off the back of the engine you can consider using a ⅜ ID barbed coupler to just extend it to the can.
Thanks for keeping my Xterra on the road, Ryan!
🤘🏻🤘🏻
great video! my only thing was if you use lock nuts like you do you should maybe do a video on the differance. VERY GOODd tip btw!
Brooo I thought you have a twin in the last seconds. TF. Nice editing really helpful.
Haha nice. Glad ya liked it.
mounting location and that bracket idea is awesome if you have thosse threads, my pro4x does not. that mounting area is the best option though
awesome video man super helpful.
Thanks I appreciate that. Have a good weekend.
Good animation to explain. Thanks
Thx!
Please update us regarding the quantity of fluids your finding in your catch can and how often you need to drain it. In addition, an instructional video for replacing a pcv valve may benefit those which visit your channel.
Finally! Been looking for a good video for the xterra.
Tell your friends lol. Thanks for watching man.
Ry the car guy Oh I shared it to one of the xterra Facebook page.
You came to the right place. Top notch X videos here.
Excellent explanation!
Thanks!
Best vid on Catch Can Install on youtube.
Wow, high praise thank you! 💪🏻
Commitment issues...lol. Good job on the video.
Another great video 👍
Thanks!
Nice clear explanation. Great job. 👍
Thank you! 💪🏻
Amazing, thanks
My pleasure, thanks for watching!
Good use of mounting. Just a couple of minor comments. Use thread lock or lock washers on the nuts re-attaching the can bracket because they can vibrate out. Also, put a washer on the first spacing bolt under your bracket. This will sandwich the big bracket holes between two washers for better distributed force so the bolt won’t wear through the hole, and it will be more secure.
Great tips! Thank you.
Great video as always! Thanks Ry. Will be using the same catch can (from your amazon link) to do mine sometime soon. :)) Not a huge fan of where you mounted your can lol... maybe I will see what other things I can fab up.
Thanks man!! I appreciate you using the link. It’s a great way to support the channel. Yea I am a real stickler for not making new holes in the truck so that spot was a slam dunk for me. However I have seen people make brackets that fit to the left of the intake. It’s usually an L shaped bracket that gets mounted in between the truck and some other item already in the engine bay (like the fuse box or something). Once you get it mounted please come back and comment on where you put it!
How would you know if this is something that needs to be done yo your car?
Im installing one of these on a 2006 honda accord v6 the pcv valve doesnt have a hose on it it is there another place i can run the hoses to?
Ry great video!!
Thanks man!
RTCG is a BAD ASS!!!!!
Thanks man! 💪🏻💪🏻
So well explained for the average Joe 👊🤠
Glad you think so. Thank you
This catch can works well. You can also insert some stainless stool wool into the can (the thicker kind and not the ultra thin kind) to enhance the baffling effect. In doing so, it improves the functionality of the oil catch can and catches more oil overall. Great video dude.
Yea you can. I am just really nervous about putting anything in there that might get sucked into the intake.
@@Rythecarguy That's fair enough brother. Better safer than sorry as they say :) I have the same catch can and for the money they do very well!
Great Job Ry. I'll do with mine pretty soon. Thanks
Thanks! Let me know how it goes.
I have a 2015 Pro-4X - those studs are not present, so I'll have to drill holes into the firewall. Nice idea for the bracket - gonna copy that :)
So I tried for as long as my patience allowed, but I could not remove the factory hose that connected the pcv to the air box. I gave up and remembered that I had vacuum connectors from a previous project so I used those to connect the IN from the can to the existing pcv valve and then just connected the OUT to the air box. Thoughts?
Few notes if you want to do it:
1. Remove the hood or you will be banging your head on it plus you get better access and view of the hose
2. The electrical loom can be removed but there is a small tab inside it and you need to use a small flat screw driver to lift it then pull
3. Disconnect the grey electrical plug to get better access
4. Use silicon lubricant on the inside of the tube before inserting it, those plastic inlets can be fragile.
Did mine today and iI had to fight with the outlet from the PCV but finally got it off, some blood was spilled.
op
Good tips! I'll add my 2 cents because I'm a bleeding narcissist.
#1 - Get a longer hood prop to use while working under the hood. Taking the hood off for a small job is overkill, IMO.
#4 - Use a small amount of motor oil instead. Silicone can damage sensors. They may be upstream, but oil should work just as well.
Taking the hood off would be the hardest part if you did
Ry the the hose you disconnect first it’s that the out let for that side for the catch can ?? Or in let
I installed the same type of catch can last week in my Navara D40. I used heater hose 5/8in at the end that looks same size of my original hose. I will see how it goes.
Any more videos for the audi tt, thinking about picking one up and you have the most detailed videos for repair on the gt. Thanks
No, to be honest that car was kind of a nightmare to work on. Couldn’t wait to get rid of it.
Very well described
Thanks!
On my 2006 Pathfinder, that mounting spot you chose is where a small coolant pump is mounted for the rear heat. It's routed over too the passenger side and goes down the firewall and goes towards the rear. Thought you had asked about it in the video.
Oh that’s awesome, thanks for letting me know.
No problem, Ry. Glad I could help. How is the catch can holding up?
Seems like a passenger side install would have been simpler and possibly more effective. I’ve been wondering if a second can for the driver side bank that feeds to the intake plenitude on the tube. I’ve noticed there’s a significant amount of oil there as well. Though it seems the pcv valve sends the oil to the right bank cylinders. The left side of the lower intake manifold was mostly dry and shiny while the right side had a significant film. The spark plugs after 100k miles also showed a history of light oil spray ect.
there is no room on the passenger side. this is old but incase anyone is reading drivers side would be was easier to get at a catch can with oil in it.
My nav has 16mm diameter ports for the crank case and 16mm on the turbo. The catch can only came with a max of 14mm. Not so easy to find the right hosing.
Hi, How were the results using the catch can? thx!
Hi mate
Its too hard to Install it into peugeot 807 2.0 hdi 2009
Can you please help
Thank you
My intake port was actually a bigger size. My stock pcv line had 2 size IDs on between the ends. I had to heat up the one end with a hair dryer and force is over the nozzel. Its never going to come off again lol.
😂
I have a question. Can I install this on a ford escape 2013? I saw a video but the guy used a can with 3 hoses.
Excellent instructional vid. Will this work on Frontier too? Im curious if location has room to undo the catch can bottom to drain the oil ?
Pi Noy The Xterra and Frontier are practically identical, so yes.
Thanks you very much sir
👍🏻🤘🏻
Heya mate, looks like I bought the same catch can on ebay. Wondering where does the filter it came mount up to?
Thanks
Little tip, nextime where theres oil or petroleum based fluids , use the piml teflon/plummers tape. Great job... Ill do this to my frontier :)
O rings buddy
Whoes that other guy at the end of the video 😁 there is 2 of you looking at the engine bay in the same time 😄
Fair play thanks .
Yw! 🤘🏻
Ok, now it has been almost two years. Have you seen enough oil in the catch can that you think it is really worth it? Noticed any other changes or improvements?
Can I do this to a V6 3.3L VVT Lexus engine with 220k miles? TIA
Ry, I know this video is from a few years ago but the first link leads only to Amazon it doesn’t lead to the nuts used on the firewall studs. What size are those nuts? I ask so I don’t have to do the purchase and return, trial and error, at Home Depot.
Can you elaborate on that second larger hose that goes into the stock "oil trap" on the air box? How does that differ from the PCV in function?
no, that is engine fresh air breathe in hose, PCV allow only engine breathe out air.
I have a question about catch cans, are they mainly for GDI engines only,or are they good for about any vehicle? And do they actually work? Thanks for the helpful video
Oil catch cans will benefit any engine. Even if they do not have GDI. Of course GDI engines benefit most because it reduces build up on the valves, but the secondary function of a catch can is it keeps oil out of the exhaust system which ruins catalytic converters. Oil is not fully burned in the combustion chamber and will destroy the cats, which will lead to engine destruction if not replaced immediately. Basically ceramic dust from the cats after they have been destroyed can come back into the combustion chamber and wear out piston rings which leads to loss of compression and more oil burning.
I cannot find pcv valve and catch can of my volvo 740 in spain
I put it on my car, i start it emiting too much smoke is that normal?
hi there, any follow up on the performance of the catch can?
Here you go! ua-cam.com/video/zPxYPAiJNiw/v-deo.html
Be sure to sub so you can see when new videos come out. 💪🏻👍🏻
Hey man, thanks so much for the very informative videos. You have really helped me give my 05 Xterra a longer life. I saw this video a while back, and am back to it cause I wanted to ask you about the oil catch an, seems like you've had it for a while.
Do you have any new input, do you feel that it was worth it? I am waiting for mine, bit wanted a last minute input of if you feel it works.
Thanks again. All your videos are awesome.
Hey man thanks for watching. This one totally works. I just empty it when I do my oil changes and that’s all you need to do. Some people like to add stuff to it but it seems to run fine on its own. My only update would be what can I would by. I found one that I used on my Mustang that I like a lot better. Better Bild quality, feels stronger, looks better. Here’s a link to it if you’re interested: amzn.to/3g3elHG
@@Rythecarguy Thanks for the update. Yeah, I think I'm gonna take your advice and go for it.
That’s awesome. Let me know how it goes.
Good job 🤔.
Thanks 👍🏻
Great Great video
Thanks!
So, I must have an even more base model than you! I don't have those studs! HAHA wondering if there might be another way to add them in!
My response is old, but on my Frontier I didn't have the studs either. So I got some 1 inch washers, put a bolt through and secured them together with JB weld. Then adhered that to the firewall and voila, studs! Not pretty, but it works.
Good job with the help of your twin brother!🤣✌️
Thanks 😅
What about the valve cover breather
That is the second PCV line that I refer to in the video
Just wondering if I'd need to fit an oil catch can to my fiesta mk6? I'm replacing the stock air box and I don't want the crankcase breather hose hanging about doing nothing so I guess it could run to a catch can
Can you do a video showing how to install keyless entry for all doors including the hatch in an Xterra? Your videos are super detailed and I'm struggling! Lol
I’m sorry you’re having trouble. Unfortunately my Xterra does not have power locks and I don’t currently have plans to install them.
@@Rythecarguy well if you ever do, I'll be here watching.
I thought my frontier didn't have keyless due to the dealership. 13 years later I bought a key fob off Amazon for $20 and low and behold, I now have keyless.
@@rider173 really? How did you program it?
@@QuiannaLamey as long as the chip in the fob is probably tuned to the specific frequency for that vehicle, they often come with programming instructions. You normally have to do some combination of the key in the ignition and the locks within 30 seconds, and then you push buttons on the fob and it programs right to that car.
I’ve noticed that many cars will have this hose really short..and lot of people are running catch can with really long hose, will that make a bad impact on our engine ?? Also what’s the fittings size and how they’re called ? I appreciate the video..many people won’t go in details telling you the hose diameter or fitting, mine came with some 6an and 8an and I don’t really know how to set those up!! It’s easier for me to buy your same fittings with same hose and put some clamps ! TIA.
Hose length will not impact the engine.
Hey Ry any tips to repair catalytic converter for my 2005 Xterra or anyone here got any tips
DON'T LET THAT SIT WITHOUT REPAIRING, IT WILL RUIN YOUR ENGINE!
Here is a reply I made to someone else but it touches on that: Oil catch cans will benefit any engine.
Great video! One question, what dud you do with the now open ports that aren't going through the catch can? It would appear there are now two open ports after the instal.
Nevermind, I rewatched it and I got it now!
👍🏻
Ry, did you leave off the nut size for the existing studs? "Nuts for the studs what are already in the engine bay: ______"
does this work as well as a provent 200 type oil catch tank?
I'm sorry. I don't understand the question.
What is the benefit of this and is it used for all engines
In my car's case (Peugeot 306 XSi) sludge (mostly building up with short drives in cold periods) was clogging up the intakemanifold and mapsensor.
What did you do with the air filter that came with it?
Did not come with one.
Do you installed with the PCV valve or delete it?
With
Should have replaced the pvc valve too while your in the back engine twisting n urning. Good nice vid.
Thanks for the tip but it was already new at that point.
What?! There’s two of you? Am I drinking too many beers?
:D
Where did you get that bracket to attach to the firewall area?
Just got it from Home Depot. Random straight bracket
Where's ur check valve u want to install one to prevent back fire into the crankcase
You add stainless steel wool in your can?
I do not.
How often do u have to empty it?
I just empty it during each oil change, it has never been more than a 1/4 or so full.
My 2018 pro4x doesn’t have those studs you mounted the bracket to
Jonathan M there is no 2018 pro4x :)
Denis Frolov I have a frontier
Jonathan M i see, sorry 😐 thought you were talking about xterra.
Excellent, what is MIL at end of video you said, MIL
Malfunction indicator light
@@Rythecarguy ok great thanks
What do you know about breather tanks? Same thing but with a filtered vent on top
I didn't touch those.
Ok thx for the reply, hope you get info on that soon so you can share with us, have a great day
What did you mean by “the MIL is off?”
Malfunction Indicator Lamp or CEL Check Engine Light. So if after installing this and you do have that light on, there is an issue. Since it is off after installing, all is good.
did anyone ever find out what those studs are for? I have a 2006 offroad and i also have those studs.
Yeah it's actually in the comments here somewhere but I forgot what it was
@@Rythecarguy good to know. I'll look for it
You installed this some time ago. Have you noticed oil in it? Would you still recommend this mod, given what you've seen?
Absolutely. It definitely catches oil. Head to my channel and check out the update video I made on it. Thanks for watching! 👍🏻
Great. Thanks for the answer. I"ll check out the update.
So does this Nissan of yours have 2 catch cans or one ?
This one has 1 because I don't drive it crazy. My Titan has two.
what size arethose nuts that goes on the firewall studs?
I wrote it down and then lost it after uploading the video. When I have time I will take one off and go get it sized.
@@Rythecarguy any luck with that size?
I've been waiting a few years for Ry's response but I know he'll come through he always does. Still patiently waiting 🥺
Does it need to be in that spot ?? Or can it be mounted by the intake with longer hose???
You can mount it wherever you like!! Have fun!
Thanks I just finished mounting it :D
Awesome! Where did you put it?
Right by my cold air intake
if its damaged beyond repair how can you repair it????
???
Thanks.... its the same install for Nissan frontier 4.0 V6 engine. You must have rats or mice tearing your insulation from the hood.
Yep! I had a huge issue when I lived up north with field mice and squirrels getting into the engine bay during the winter and tearing it to shreds. Really pissed me off.
Couldn't u just use regular vaccum hose instead of fuel hose?
Yea, I suppose you could. as long as it can stand up to dirty oil.
Why didn't Nissan do a recall to have this added or at least alert customers to this issue? I'm going to order this kit for my 2014 Xterra.
Most cars don't have this. The way that it's designed is how vehicles normally operate. This is just an aftermarket product that helps capture the oil before it makes it back into the engine.
@@Rythecarguy I watched a video explaining why this is needed in GDI engines. I don't know if the 2014 Xterra has a GDI engine, though, but it sounds like it would be useful in a lot of vehicles.
Agreed. I wish they all had it but they try to make things as easy as possible for people. This just adds more maintenance.
Did you use the O-rings that came with the kit?
Yes sir.
@@Rythecarguy thread side or nipple side?
Thread side
@@Rythecarguy I figured it out. Got it all installed and plumbed. I did the spark plugs simultaneously. Pretty easy stuff. Thanks for the videos man!
Do you have a sense of how much this helps with a port injection car? I am a car maintenance noob, but I read elsewhere that port injection cars (like the XTerra(?)) effectively clean the port with gasoline so there's less oil and junk thrown back into the intake.
Love the videos by the way - I'm learning a ton.
I am copying a reply I made to someone else: Oil catch cans will benefit any engine. Even if they do not have GDI.
