  • Demonstrating a range of settings on my BYOC (Build Your Own Clone) Classic Overdrive I built earlier this year, their take on a TS808-style circuit. I primarily use this as a boost in front of a distorted amp, but I wanted something that could also hold its own for bluesier, singing lead playing at a blues jam, and I'd say it delivers. In retrospect, I should have angled the pedal a little more, as the searing blue LED I chose makes it a little hard to see some of these settings, but you can see where the knobs are pointing well enough, if nothing else, when I'm adjusting it.
The gitar here is my ash strat with a rosewood fretboard and a Fender Eric Johnson pickup set, into the "Clean" mode of my Mesa Roadster, channel 1, master at noon, presence at 2, bass at 10, mids at 10, treble a hair over 1, and gain ad 2:30-ish. It was mic'd up with a SM57 and MD421 against the grill, through a BAE 1073MP, into a Apogee ensemble. The MD421was mixed a hair below the SM57, but I didn't do anything else to it in the mix, aside from "mastering" it up towards CD volume. The reverb you hear is the amp.
A fair amount of scotch was harmed in the making of this recording.

Sounds great! Did you perform any of the mods in the kit at all?

Nice demo! Sounds amazing as a low gain drive pedal!

Thank you! It makes a great boost before a driven amp, too, but I wanted a pedal I could also toss in a gig bag for blues jams, and I'm really happy how this sounds. This is in front of a Rectifier half stack, no less.

Which scotch was harmed? Asking for a friend. And me. Okay, just me.

Hmm. Going by color and my typical buying habits, I'm going to guess a Balvenie Carribean Cask...? Looks a little dark to be an Ardbeg.

Good demo! After about 1:00 it got a bit too muddy for my taste but still, it's good to know it's there if you need it.

Part of that is this is a reasonably fat sounding set of pickups (Fender Eric Johnsons), but yeah - it was a fun project to put together, and a fun little OD to throw in a gig bag to bring to a blues jam to be at least somewhat different from the usual bright green pedals everyone else has. :)

Drew Peterson True that! That's why I specified "for my taste." I play a lot of Blues through an Egnater Renegade and don't use much OD at all. The bit I do use is natural. Still, It is fun to kick it up a notch sometimes. I agree with you though that this pedal sounds more natural than the "green" one.

Ahh, nice! I usually play with a fair bit more gain than you, I suspect, but at the end of the day *how* the gain responds is half the fun!
