  • This channel and mode were an unexpected favorite of mine when I bought this amp - I'd oly ever played it with humbuckers and wasn't really impressed, but Edge with singlecoils is a whole different beast; glassy, searing, dynamically responsive breakup sounds that sound way more like a small amp on the edge of meltdown than a 90-watt tube head at a comfortable volume. The gain was maybe at 2 o'clock for this; if anything I wish I'd recorded this with the gain a couch lower.
The guitar is my American Strat with a set of Suhr ML Standards, run straight into the amp. This was recorded through a BAE1073 with a SM57 and MD421 on the cab, with a bit of light EQ from a Neve 551 on input and a little bit of delay added in the mix for ambience. This is pretty true to life for how it sounds in the room, though.

That tone is killer - I’ve been looking at buying this amp and I wanted to be sure it could do all of the strat tones justice. Looks like I’m getting this amp, only about a grand away from it.

Thanks man - Ch 2 Edge is phenomenal for this kind of stuff. It does sound a little bright in isolation so I should probably cut some video with bass and drums as well...

Drew Peterson I’ve been curious how close it can get to the SRV side of things, and from the sounds of it, it’s exactly what I’m looking for (already have a Bugera V22 for the SRV tones). This Mesa seems to be able to make every time out there though - like what people always wanted modeling processors to do.

Yeah, I mean, the only thing I'd say is that this is only one mode of 9 in the amp, and if you're mostly looking for a SRV sort of tone there are easier and cheaper ways to get there (I'd say maybe look at a Lone Star Special?) where you wouldn't have so many more options than you're really after... But, if you want a SRV sort of tone from an amp that also does Petrucci, Metallica, and, oh, country, then this is a pretty amazing head.

Drew Peterson yup I’m looking for all of it. I saw one guy running a strat through it and it sounded like Steve Vai’s For The Love of God. I want to get this amp mostly because it can do so many tones with such quality.

Yup - that's why I love this amp, too. Some of the best smooth, searing, high gain lead sounds I've ever heard, but can cover a huge range of other sounds with authority as well, and as a guy who plays "shred" style stuff but tends to write and play in a lot bluesier of a manner than most in the genre, I like that flexibility.

I see you have a roadster there as well. I have a roadster and am considering a Mark V also. Do you prefer one? Is there any need to own both?

Honestly, I don't remember exactly. It was Ch 2 Edge, gain probably around 1 o'clock, and I guess I can kind of make them out from the video - master about noon, presence about 10 oclock, treble a little over noon, mids maybe 11ish, and bass pretty low, maybe 9:30-10.

Actually, I forgot I did this, but if you go to the very end of the video, there's a close up picture of the amp settings.
