  • Does your diet include artificial sweeteners? The research presented in this video reveals that non-caloric sweeteners have an impact on insulin levels. Since insulin is your fat-storing hormone, you may want to rethink how often you rely on artificial sweeteners, especially if you are a slow loser.
    In this video, you'll learn...
    *How artificial sweeteners mixed in coffee affected my blood glucose and ketone readings
    *How artificial sweeteners cause insulin resistance and what that means to your ability to burn fat
    *My recommendation on using artificial sweeteners
    Artificial Sweeteners pictured in the video:
    Splenda, Equal, Sweet-n-Low, Erythritol, Stevia, Allulose, Monk Fruit, Xylitol

    I started the keto : healthy journey lifestyle 3 years ago , after initial weight loss and health benefits I fell into dirty keto and bad keto habits . I’m 54, insulin resistance, belly fat and struggle to keep fasting glucose below 100 and to achieve ketosis . Sardine fasting on day 4 gets me there , barely .. and then I’m ready to be done , I’m going to start journaling, IF, exercise , being mindful , … I’m going to start with the good habits I learned , ditch the dirty habits , enjoy the journey and keep on keeping on . I didn’t come this far for 1/2 baked results . I am going to capture that hope and zeal I started with 3 years ago and keep building and improving on what works and what doesn’t work.

    Thank you Becky for this information. I rarely use sugar substitutes but when I do, I use it for baking if I am wanting a sweet and my preferred sweetener is Erythritol. Using it once in a while I think would be okay. In 7 months of being on keto, I have used it 4 times.

    Very helpful! Overcoming a sugar addiction. Low carb high fat diet. Steadfast, pretty clean, and strict for about 14 months now. The last 3 months I gained almost half of the 30 pounds lost. Didn’t change my pretty strict food habit at all! The thing that changed, was serious increase of heavy cream and sugar free syrup In Coffee About 3-4 times a day. (Sugar carving so I was white knuckling it through with that.) Cut down dairy, heavy cream and butter drastically and no weight change! Started searching and found this and some other videos saying the same thing. This has to be what it is. So I need to tearfully let that vice and tool i used go!!

    I tried a new product put out by "Silk"; it is Almond unsweetened vanilla almond milk. It has 2g carbs. As you taught us Dr. Becky, it has no sugars or sugar substitutes in the first 3 ingredients.
    Will use this as a step to cutting sweeteners completely.
    Hopefully it will be out eveywhere soon. It was so new, I cant find it online.

    Good information. Real results. I dont use sweeteners at all. Sometimes I do add honey to plain yogurt and that spikes my insulin. Yes, bad me, but honey at least is not fake and has antioxidants and I dont use a ton of it. Always find a happy medium.

    0:47 In that video, most of the sweeteners used included maltodextrin and dextrose as fillers (which have very high glycemic index). Even the "pure stevia" sounded like it included fillers because pure stevia extract is 300 times sweeter than sugar and the "3/8th teaspoon" used would have been equivalent to 112.5 teaspoons of sugar in sweetness. Try these sweeteners in liquid form.

    • @FlintSpall
      @FlintSpall 26 днів тому

      Glad you brought that up, because your absolutely right.Not saying all those artificial sweeteners are good, but the demon is the maltidextron in those packets and elsewhere.Thanks Those liquid sweeteners will cause some to just do without because they'll gag you when tasted.Nasty formulation IMO

    I'm trying to go sugar free but I still love my coffee sweetened. I've recently switched from equal to stevia and lost 3 lbs in about 4 days. Stevia isn't near as sweet as aspartame. 2 packets of equal is almost too sweet. I'm finding that 3 packets of stevia is just right. I use MCT oil in my morning coffee before going to the gym. I work out fasted and eat breakfast at around 12:00 am. I'm now intermittent fasting and just have one large meal a day. Which is breakfast. I will have a double scoop of protein powder with a scoop of cacao in water and some asparagus or other veggies at around 6:30pm. My MBR is suppose to be around 1466 calories and besides working out, at the gym 4 to 5 days a week, I'm just sitting all day. I do get out and ride my bicycle or go walking once in a while though. I've dropped over 10 pounds in the last year and a half. I'm 64 now and was 63 when my aviator picture was taken. If I have to drink my coffee black, I'd have to give up coffee.

    Dang- I just bought some electrolytes that have Steviol and Sucralose, I didn't want these, but that part of the label was not visible online. These are not specifically mentioned in the video. Any idea if/ to how these affect insulin and leptin levels? Splenda for instance, contains just a tiny percentage of sucralose as a component. Splenda contains only 5% Sucralose plus 95% fillers (Maltodextrin and Dextrin), in order to make it "spoon-for-spoon" and fluffy "like sugar". Maltodextrin and Dextrin can contribute to a spike in blood sugar.

      Or switch to a low-carb diet which is much easier to maintain over the super-restrictive Keto diet she is advocating. The mild bump that sucralose does is so minor that in a low-carb diet it does not matter and even some Keto people do not mind it.

    I have been doing a 6 week weightloss challenge and just finished week 3. I'm eating a paleo meal plan and the only thing I consumed outside of the plan was iced sugar free (sucralose) vanilla macchiatos made with almond milk multiple times a week. I had no idea that sucralose was splenda! I have not seen any weight loss in these 3 weeks despite working out with high intensity 5 days a week! How can I fix this? Can I use xylitol or erythritol just to sweeten the macchiatos or should I just stop consuming all of them all together?

  • @RandomJane104

    I'm glad I quit artificial sweeteners several years ago when some of them started giving me stomach issues. I've stuck to just plain old sugar for the last few years and just had to ween myself off of it. I really miss a little sweetener in my coffee though. I like flavored coffees and the depth of flavor is lacking with just heavy cream alone. Cinnamon helps when I remember to add it.

    Becky, Insulin resistance is very difficult to manage. Sugar is our enemy, but at some point in your life living a tasteless life is just not worth it. Can you recommend a way to add some natural forms in small portions that will not inhibit Ketosis? I just have a hard time wrapping my head around how an 1/8 of a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup can make one retain belly fat... humm . I would love a video of healthy meal options for Insulin resistance. I can not tolerate artificial sweeteners anyway so they are not really an option for me. Your videos are my go to and I patiently await them..

    • @beckygillaspy
      @beckygillaspy  5 років тому +2

      Hi Tina, eating a healthy high-fat/low-carb diet is certainly full of flavor. Once you move away from the need for sugar and your taste buds are no longer held hostage by raw sugar, your taste for natural sugars like those found in berries and even raw nuts and seeds is enhanced. And, of course, fats are extremely flavorful and satisfying. You've likely heard me say my 3E's - Easy-to-Follow, Effective, and Enjoyable - Your diet has to be all three to get the results you want. It is what I teach in my coaching program if you're interested: www.drbeckyfitness.com/coaching

    Dr Becky. Is it possible that Stevia and / or monk fruit and erythritol can cause hot flashes? I started taking some of the sweetener with my daily coffees. I also coincidentally started having terrible hot flashes. Yikes. I cut them out and first day noticed a 99 % improvement! Is it the rise in insulin that caused the hot flashes?

    • @beckygillaspy
      @beckygillaspy  4 роки тому +1

      The cause of hot flashes is not well understood, but related to the drop in estrogen that women experience around menopause. Was your experience a coincidence? I don't know. But, I do know that you can live without sugar substitutes, so you're best to do without them.

    I dont know if you can answer or not. The topic being sucrolose, which is in Splenda. I have researched and have found that the problems with Splenda (and the sucrolose in it) usually contains 95% dextrose (D-glucose) and maltodextrin. I dont use Splenda, but what about sucrolose alone as a sweetner, such as Propel zero drinks, and some sugar free syrups and other items too. Do you know if this is safe and if it affects blood glucose levels? Unless I am understanding incorrectly the main problem with Splenda is the combination of ingredients not the sucrolose alone?

    • @beckygillaspy
      @beckygillaspy  5 років тому +1

      Hi Amy, I can't say for sure what causes the issues with Splenda (i.e. sucralose or the fillers). As you might know, my husband and I tested our blood glucose and ketones after consuming different sweeteners (bit.ly/2uYWdJJ) and Splenda did not have good results. However, I don't know how I would test sucralose alone because my suspicion is that the fillers are needed for volume and to avoid clumping, so I don't know that it is available to the public without the fillers. From what I have read, sucralose alone is not favorable for glucose or insulin. I can't say that this is a topic I will get to real soon, so if it is a gnawing question for you, you may want to do a search on Google Scholar.

      Hi Marlene, the main reason I am not a fan of any artificial sweeteners is because they keep you hooked on sweetness (sugar). Having said that, if I make an occasional treat, I use Swerve.

    I will never go for artificial sweeteners unless a solid research comes out. Which considering the track record of food industry could be a long long wait. But i dont have to deal with the empty calories that sugar provides as well. If I'm gonna have sugar then I might as well take it in the form where it's not stripped naked of any nutrients. Here comes in Jaggery Powder. Jaggery has been used in India for thousands of years and I've personally switched to Jaggery powder for my sweet needs. Its complex carbs and not stripped of nutrients like sugar with exactly the same caloric value.

    I hate water. I lost 80 pounds drinking diet soda and tea. So its not needed to deprive yourself. However, I could probably have lost weight quicker. But..... Then I would have really excess skin. So would I really want that? As for diabetes, that's what I am wanting to tackle if I have it as I'm untested. But pretty sure I am diabetic. So I'm going to start drinking water only using diet drinks for my eating window and see if it helps. I feel better after not dieting for 3 days of cheating. I'm curious if Splenda is causing blurry vision and constipation and inflammation. Cause I actually feel better drinking normal sugar than Splenda or aspartame. I realize this now. Either that or all this food is giving me what I need for good vision and less inflammation. Learning as I go lol

  • @2hot2handle65

    I recently figured out how bad artificial sweeteners are. In short: from a metabolic perspective, they are better than real sugar because they do not cause a rise in blood sugar, but they _do_ increase insulin. Too much insulin circulating in the blood causes both weight gain and insulin resistance. Insulin resistance causes the body to release even more insulin, furthering the cycle.
    Basically, there is no way to cheat on sweets. And this explains why people who drink diet soda remain obese--it is not just because they are compensating for the diet soda by overeating. Just remember that insulin is the main driver of weight gain, not necessarily calories. Anything that causes too much insulin in your body will cause you to gain weight. And if you are not building muscle or recovering from some injury, that weight will be fat.
    Another culprit is excessive protein, which people also tend to ignore. Because while protein has a negligible impact on blood sugar, it has an immense impact on insulin levels.

    • @NexusNine
      @NexusNine 2 роки тому

      Wrong. All of it is wrong. They do not increase insulin, and there are absolutely no studies that have proven that they have that causality effect. All of these studies, many of them not even on humans, have been observational. Observational studies are incomplete, meaning not all variables are implemented within the study, and therefore produce inconclusive evidence. They may see a link, but that link may be for any number of factors not considered within the study. For example, it is observed that many obese people drink diet sodas; therefore, a link has been made between diet sodas and obesity. Observational conclusion: diet soda "may" cause obesity. What is not factored in, however, is that many obese people switch to diet sodas to lose weight, but they don't necessarily change their overall diet. It's not about people compensating for the calories or carbs, it's about failing to change the root cause, which is their overall diet. In short, aspertame and other artificial sweeteners can't make you gain weight, but they also can't make you lose it either if the rest of your diet is full of carbs and calories.
      Factually, artificial sweeteners CANNOT increase insulin resistance. You can argue with me all you want on this, but I'm walking proof that they don't. I'm a type 2 diabetic, so yeah, I have some very firsthand experience with insulin resistance. Before you even try to link it to artificial sweeteners, no, I never used artificial sweeteners prior to being diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic. It was all the real sugar-filled soda and junk food and massive amounts of carbs I ate that did that. I switched to diet sodas and artificial sweeteners after that diagnosis. At my worse, my A1C was at 7.6. Not good at all. But I didn't just switch to diet soda and artificial sweeteners and call it a day, I switched my entire diet up. I went low carb. Cut out grains, whole wheat, oats, and anything starchy. Went to a 16-hour fasting routine 4 days a week with a 12-hour fasting routine for the other 3 days. But yes, I didn't drop the diet soda. I didn't drop the artificial sweeteners. What I did drop however was 62lbs, and I brought my A1C down to 5.1. You do realize that isn't even in the diabetic range, right? My blood glucose is 100% normal. And I drink 2 to 3 diet sodas a day. I sometimes have an artificially sweetened iced coffee or iced tea. I'll sometimes eat artificially sweetened homemade cakes or ice cream or doughnuts or brownies for desert.
      Please explain to me how a type 2 diabetic who is insulin resistant can have full control over his diabetes and successfully lose a good chunk of weight while using artificial sweeteners daily in his life, when artificial sweeteners are supposed to do exactly the opposite according to what you're saying. I actually have the answer. It's because none of the studies have been able to conclusively determined if artificial sweeteners have a causality effect on weight gain or insulin resistance. Not a single one of those studies. That's why.

      @@NexusNine That is good for you but doesn't prove anything. A smoker who smokes a pack a day and cuts down to 1 cigarette a day has dramatically increased her life expectancy, but that does not mean smoking is not bad for you. You have cut out a lot of other bad habits, like over-eating and excessive carbs, so it's working out for you.
      Artificial sweeteners are not metabolically innert. At the very least they affect the brain, and how insulin interacts with the brain. Insulin interacts with the brain and how the brain controls weight in complex ways that we don't fully understand.
      Anyways, the fact that you can't quit sweeteners pretty much proves it. You are so hooked on sweet stuff even now you can't quit.

    • @NexusNine
      @NexusNine 2 роки тому

      @@2hot2handle65 cigarettes are a horrible analogy. There is years of fact-based evidence that supports the harmful effects of cigarettes, when factually, there is not one conclusive study that actually supports the negative effects artificial sweeteners have on the brain or any part of the body. A lot of people speak "truths" about how bad artificial sweeteners are, but all it really is is a bunch of people trying to piece together a bunch of incomplete and in inclusive studies that all show varying and conflicting results. Again, without all variables accounted for, observational studies hold little to no weight. The problem occurs when these inconclusive studies are presented as irrefutable facts when they simply just aren't. Where is your evidence that artificial sweeteners keep people obese? Because you flat out presented it as a causality. Where is your evidence that artificial sweeteners on their own keeps people obese? Because there are plenty of people like myself that use artificial sweeteners and lose weight. So what are the missing variables here? You can say whatever you want about my taste for sweet food. What I am, regardless, is proof that not all variables were accounted for in any of these studies, and failure to account for all variables will always present inconclusive data. And until the data can reach a conclusive point, thinking something is bad doesn't make it factually bad.

    • @2hot2handle65
      @2hot2handle65 2 роки тому

      @@NexusNine lolol I didn't present it as a causality. What the studies show is that artificial sweeteners are associated weight gain in people of normal and obese BMIs, even after controlling for other factors like exercise, calories, etc. So it's not just fat people eat a lot of artificial sweeteners - it's that you are more likely to gain fat when you eat artificial sweeteners. A clear association has been reported. They just don't know why. But it is definitely true that these sweeteners activate the same pleasure centers in the brain as real sugar.

    This doesn't make any sense, your insulin can go up or down doesn't mean you are not burning calories. Artificial sweetners cannot stop your body from burning calories, yes some can raise insulin, it doesn't mean that it will stop you from losing weight. Insulin and weight lose do not have to occur simultaneously they are two separate processes. I studied nutrition & dietetics and all this information is false. If they have next to 0 calories in them where are those calories coming from then that cause you to gain weight? A deficit of calories causes you to lose weight and a surplus causes you to gain weight. If you are in a deficit at the end of the day that is all that matters, not so much your insulin. I use sweetners daily and have super low bodyfat and will easily gain weight using real sugar etc.
