i am still fascinated by this song, more than 20 years later. such a perfect blend -- the moody guitar line, the mysterious completely-open-to-interpretation lyrics, the texture of words and voice. so many excellent songs on those first couple of albums but i always come back to this one.
When I first listened to Suzanne's music, I imediately realized that this woman is not only a musician, she's a poet, too. I "TRY" to write, too. And many times she inspires me to do something artful... to write a poem or a song. And this song in particular. I remember not trying to interpret this song but just feeling it. Difficult to describe. Lonely and in peace with myself? Free? You can put it how you want but her song is just the blade, the warm blood that follows is your own...
My favorite female singer/songwriter. This is still my 2nd fave song of hers. I had the pleasure of meeting her after a show on her '07 tour and she couldn't have been more friendly and gracious.
The first song of her's I heard (on the radio) was "Luka." Thought it was ok but I didn't pay too much attention until I heard "Small Blue Thing" on a local college radio station. I became an instant fan. That was 25 years ago. Thanks for posting.
I had been familiar with "Luka" in 1987and brushed it off as just one more over-played top 40 song. That same year, a college radio station played this song and I sat up and took notice, not knowing who the artist was until the end of the song. The station played several other "deep cuts" off the first album and I have been a loyal fan ever since, but Small Blue Thing was THE song pulled me in. Awesome! (bty - I grew to love "Luka" as well.)
One of the great treasures in the American songbook. Alongside songs like, Jefferson Airplane's - Coming Back To Me, and many more in the same genre. I heard this song the first time in a hospital bed. I had just woken up from a difficult surgery. First thing I did when I got back on my feet again was buying this album.
I used to listen song eons ago....but anyway I always pictured the small blue thing as a marble. But it can be so many things. The lyrics to this song are amazingly well written.
this song like effects some great feelings i never had so i never stop listening to it!suzanne we love you and ur voice its so clear and pure continue your talent!!!
Fantastic, amazing, no words to describe the atmosphere created by this absolutely incredible music piece...I remember waking up at 6 a.m to record this performance in a spanish TV channel
I have this concert from the Royal Albert Hall in its entirety, and it really captures Suzanne at the height of her career. I love all her early stuff, not too keen on some of her later techno based stuff. Having said that, I love her Up-Close 4 disc collection, which features stripped back acoustic versions of all her best stuff, both old and new.
Glad to hear that someone appreciates Suzanne for what she does best. Good old fashioned Folk music with her acoustic guitar. This is what Suzanne does best, in my opinion, and I have been a fan from her early beginnings. I do not like this hip-hop, rap crap, techno based stuff that fills the air waves these days. Call me old, but that's the way I feel.
Not a woman she is a Goddess an angel God sent to us to make us happy. Seen her 6 times and yet too few. How can a kind man not fall in love with her? The woman in herself.
I just recently got the album (good one btw), and this lovely song is the one I like best. The imagery is just wonderful. Nice to see a live version on here.
i just saw her last night in Los Gatos. 1-26-11 she was sweet funny and has a wonderful voice and sense of emotion. She kinda gave 3 different parties a hard time for coming in late though. it was funny!
Suzanne constantly amazes me with her introspection and imagery. I've loved her since Tom's Diner, and am very, very grateful that she is still recording. And no, they do NOT make music like this anymore. I'm afraid that introspection and imagery with this generation is an in depth text message with accompanying photo. Pity.
@mkrulz77 I've been in love with her music from her beginnings, the tragic thing is that I am also in love with her since I was about twelve years old and I'm 38 right now...When somebody asks me what kind of celebrity I like my thoughts always go towards Suzanne. She's sweet, blessed with good music, with a voice that can make you reach the stars, and in my opinion, so beautyful. I love this WOMAN.
... Still think this is her best song so far (not that I have heard them all, but I dare to say so anyway :) ). It's shame they don't play this on radio as often as they play Luka. - DD
Dear Artist, I have listened to you in college and dance tours in my "Sony", back in the day. Now I find my self here years later. I found you. Quite honestly, I used to rip (DRIVE) my IROC-Z-28 Car through Mt Shasta In California, JAMMING THIS SHEET IN MY T-TOPS. You are so UNDER-RATED. All That will CHANGE. You need a manager? Lets Jam . xo Your _____. Thanks.
@sanx21tube How do you describe sunshine, or love? "Seems popular, but I don't care for the blend?" Your loss. Lighten up, and when you next see a rainbow, cheer up and realise that each and every one of the colours are tax-free, and always have been : D
My interpretation: this is perhaps the most genuinely erotic song in all of popular music. No anatomy, no obscenities, no bravado, just a woman describing how she gives herself over completely - to the point of temporarily (?) risking her very existence as an individual person - to the pleasure being given her by someone else.
She's just too good. She makes me too sad though, because the things she sings about I know are there but I never see them. thats why I cannot listen to her for long
Today I am A small blue thing Made of china Made of glass I am cool and smooth and curious I never blink I am turning in your hand Turning in your hand Small blue thing
@HealingHerbalRemedy I know what you mean, but I'm not sure that's ever really been the case, but maybe a little more talent used to squeeze its' way through back then.

My favorite female singer/songwriter. This is still my 2nd fave song of hers. I had the pleasure of meeting her after a show on her '07 tour and she couldn't have been more friendly and gracious.
wowbobwow37 It's 6 years since you posted your comment, but I'm curious to know - which Suzanne Vega track is your absolute fave?
Captivating. So we'll written both lyrically and as a group instrumentally. This is an amazing gem.
Wonderful! She is a truly great songwriter, performer, singer and guitarist!

Her words are so emotionally charged.
when i first heard this song i was at barnes and noble and this beautiful girl walked in while this song was playing and i fell in love....
I have no idea why it took me all this time to realize how amazing she is...
A new song for me. It made my day.
I am a bass player, 48 years, and like what your bass player does in your music.
I had been familiar with "Luka" in 1987and brushed it off as just one more over-played top 40 song. she is brilliant. Just saw her perform in LA. her voice is just as strong and distinctive as ever.

I heard this song the first time in a hospital bed. I had just woken up from a difficult surgery. First thing I did when I got back on my feet again was buying this album.
I first heard it around 20 years ago - and its still one of my favourite songs - the melody is haunting.
beautiful
Captivating.
I used to listen song eons ago....but anyway I always pictured the small blue thing as a marble. But it can be so many things. The lyrics to this song are amazingly well written.
I love her, such a great voice!!

INCREDIBLE SONG - THE WORDS ARE SO DELICATE.
Yes, she is so good! Love her song-writing and voice. Truly a great artist!
She is truly mystical, but a few years ahead, or behind, her time. I have her first 3 albums and they are still a good listen. Thanks for sharing.
Got tickets to see her this evening at the Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River MA. I am sooooo psyched!!!!
this song like effects some great feelings i never had so i never stop listening to it!suzanne we love you and ur voice its so clear and pure continue your talent!!!

She has such an eerily beautiful voice.

I just recently got the album (good one btw), and this lovely song is the one I like best. The imagery is just wonderful. Nice to see a live version on here.

We lack the courage to be Jews
Without the elegance of Africa
With our youthful fireworks all defused”

I'd be effing honored if Suzanne Vega stole my apple pie.
I'd probably make her another one, too.

I just noticed her songs dont rhyme. But its so good you dont realize.
Cris LeRoi that's what's so refreshing about it. So many songs ryme. What a captivating composition.
@HealingHerbalRemedy I know what you mean, but I'm not sure that's ever really been the case, but maybe a little more talent used to squeeze its' way through back then.
