Hobart Welder Generator Champ 140 resurrected

- On it's last leg, abandoned, orphaned and not loved.... Until now!
Welder generators are not common in the DIY world but here are a few you can buy new:
7hp 2200 watts w/120A Stick : amzn.to/3Byhg8A
15hp 2000watt w/210A stick and tig features: amzn.to/3B6DXiD
HOBART 145(newer model of video welder): store.cyberweld.com/hoch145we...
Honda powered 1500watt w/135A stick: amzn.to/3RA4WdG
note: I have not used any of these personally. They are pricey but there are a few cheaper options, read below.
Thoughts:
I've owned a few welder generators over the years and this is my second compact portable one. I'm really impressed by their welding ability and being portable is a huge plus. This Hobart 140(built 1994) is a capable machine and you could easily tackle some 1/4" or thicker steel. The last one I owned was a Honda unit; EW171 and that was impressive as well. They look like a Honda construction generator but put out 4k watts and 170A DC welding. They typically sell for dirt cheap used(a few hundred bucks) and are well worth it. They also came a little small in the EW140 and older EW170. If you find one, buy it.
NON DETERGENT OIL CLARIFICATION
If your engine doesn't have an oil filter you should use non detergent. "Detergent" simply suspends all the bad crap for an oil filter to remove. No oil filter and you're just pushing all the bad crap through your engine, bearings, cam lobes, etc over and over. Non detergent allows all this bad crap to fall to the bottom, out of the way and only clean oil is recirculated.
Before oil filters became standard in a car engine(1950's) detergent oil wasn't a thing. you wanted all the carbon, metal flakes, water, dirt to fall to the oil pan to be drained out with oil changes. Detergent (soap) simply bonds to bad crap and the oil filter grabs it.

Pretty handy machine. You're a skilled metal fabricator, which I knew already. That air box cover looked store bought. Perfect fit.
If I hadn't watched him make it (smiling the whole time), I would have never noticed it was after market.
Thanks 👍
You're definitely right, that air box looks great.
Nice touch at the start with Ginger helping to jack up the scissor lift table, had me rolling🤣🤣🤣
What can I say, she's very helpful around the shop.
@@sixtyfiveford Hell yeh, brings you drinks, balls, inspects and assists with your repairs etc etc, anyone would think she's the boss, or the star of the show🤔🤣👍
I saw that start on the first pull and knew you should send it to me. I can finish the rest. 😀
It'll be on your doorstep within the hour.
Love the welder and fix. Love the Dog. Love the Fresca. Love the bit about the oil. IMO multi-grade oil is crap and a scam, had a Crown Vic w/ over 450K on the original motor (115K when I bought it), ran the hell out of it constantly (100+ mph w/ the a/c on) and never ran anything but straight 40w of no particular brand, changed maybe every 5 - 10K. Pretty sure I'll get over the 6 extra miles of fuel mileage that practice cost me; rest of the car finally wore out but the motor still ran great and the a/c blew cold.
Hey Thanks.
We have used the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!
Those old electric, dual blade, meat carving knives that you always see in the thrift stores work really great for cutting foam, fiberglass insulation and Styrofoam accurately and neatly. Mine looks like it was made in the 70's, it does exceptional work and it's come in handy several times.
Nice work refreshing that old unit!
I actually bought a new vintage electric carving knife just for this. You're right, they work awesome and I use it whenever the foam is thick.
Don't say this too loud....I just use my wife's. Her using it once or twice a year seems like such a waste.
@@D2O2 Haha!
Really nice find Moe! That is one handy little machine. Whenever I’m stick welding I always remember what I was taught long ago. “If it slags, it drags”
I knew it was wrong the moment I did it. I had to leave it in the video though so I'll never forget.
Excellent Video !!! You continue to give Ole’ Mustie1 a run for the trophies !! 👍
Thanks
Nice, I have heard people grumble that those are getting hard to find. Had one on a trailer that was pto driven on the farm I worked for in the early 1980s.. We used an olderMassey Ferguson diesel. It would run the welder at almost idle.
That would be neat.
What a great machine and good looking result! Older equipment like this was definitely made to last, as opposed to today's overpriced disposable plastic garbage.
Well said
Nice unit. Handy in a whole bunch of ways. Stick weld, slag...you drag.
I knew it was wrong the moment I did it...
I appreciate you explaining things like oil deterioration to the depths you do. It really gives a well rounded view while working on machines. I'll add it to the ol memory bank.
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed the video
airbox looked perfect well done I always appreciate your videos
Hey thanks. I had full intentions of just buying the cover, but apparently it's non-existent.
I think its been at least 20 years since I've stick welded. I first started welding in High School metal shop class with a torch and a stick welder.
Once you mig weld there's not much desire to go back to stick welding.
great .. now I got welders flash ..... awesome little restore refresh ... I love doing stuff like this ...
A pal moved here years ago from Florida to work on the atomic power plant a little way from here. He got a portable about like that with a single cylinder Kohler, around 18 horse and did all sorts of jobs with it. He was x-ray certified and ended up at the boulder hole. That's a nice rig and Ginger was hiding outside as you brought it in. Thanks, Pal and God Bless!
They seam to work really well.
I've had your channel in my subscribed list for over a year but had never watched one of your videos. That's gonna change! I really enjoy your presentation, wide skill set and your dog! Thanks for sharing 😊
That is a great unit to have, so versatile and not difficult to work on. I am going to have to find one. Good job Moe.
They're handy!
The best home garage fabricobble channel on UA-cam. Thanks for the contribution.
I’d love to find one of these! I want a backup generator but to have the portable welder would be icing on the cake!
Oh men You are always such a great source of knowledge. That drain plug trick got me i will not lie.
Nice find and save! While not searching, I've had my eyes and ears open for one of those for years. Super handy piece of equipment to have at the ready!
Thanks for sharing👍🏻 and thank you Ginger for supervising and guarding the truck😉
Hey thanks. Honda made a great unit years ago and generally their dirt cheap. There model starts with EW(engine welder). They had the EW170 EW171 and EW140.
Never knew they made such a thing. Great dog!
Great job man, can’t go wrong with those older Briggs Vanguards. Built so well.
Hey thanks
I really respect you for your deep, varied knowledge!
Wow, thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
Great tip on using an extension backwards to remove the oil plug! Thanks!
Nice job bringing it back to being useful.
Wow you did it again! You really amaze me at times.
Hey thanks
That was a pretty sweet find, nice restoration, looks awesome. 👍
Nice of Ginger to help you jack up the table 😉, she's a really good puppy. 👍
You got that right!
Fantastic work on the welder generator, looks great!
Glad you like it!
I’m impressed you trained doggo to pump the jack handle!
Wow Moe's, you are on a roll with the cool restorations. I can't wait to see what is next.
More to come!
Gordon here ,
Another one item that has a new home with lots of T.L.C. Very well thought out job and very informative. No less than a hundred👍.
You're awesome. Thanks.
The capacitors are to cut down the noise on your radio when you're welding (noise suppression). Nice job on the restore, including scratches !
this is an awesome unit. lucky you to be able to pick it up for a reasonable price. that's the beauty of buying distressed items. you can get things that would otherwise be priced beyond what one could afford. in perfect shape, this would cost more than a small used car.
So true
Ginger raising the lift 😆
Still one of my favorite channels!
Thanks. You're too kind.
Really enjoy watching your vids your informative and good fun
Looks nice and works even better! Why can't I be that lucky...
Thanks. It worked out well this time. Sometimes you end up with a paperweight.
One lift table to another....major flex! Ginger the wonder dog helping out again.
Had no intentions of keeping the small lift table when I bought it, but it's coming in super handy.
Nice job on the generator/welder.
Man you have a nice pet there. i.e. the star of the show.
It seems to work really well. Yeah Ginger is a good sport.
Well at least you got it going again there Young Man 😎 I use to work at a place that had a Lincoln stick welder and generator
Thanks for the heart young man 😎👍
What a find. This is a great channel.
Very cool relove job on that great welder generator.

If it's hot out I will. Otherwise she loves people watching.
Great find & restoration.

Thanks Joe.
@@sixtyfiveford .👌
Man, that thing must have some stories to tell! That's definitely in the 'high mileage curb club'!
She wasn't treated well.
The price was right you can't go wrong and not a lot of effort to get it squared nice 👍
Nice Job on That. Great Find ! You're Dog the Coolest .
Thanks Wayne
Nice find......Great repair job. I need one of those.
Thanks 👍
Hey buddy..i agree with you on the briggs vanguard they are great engines..i have a Lincoln weld and power welder with the kohler 10 hp industrial engine it's really huge compared to other 10 hp..it was given to me 5 years ago and wasn't running .. cleaned the points and now it works well it's pretty old too must weigh 350 lbs or more i had to put new wheels and tires on it also..I'm happy with it.. you will be as happy with yours as well great find..always enjoy seeing Ginger she is so smart..take care friend see you on the next one Cheers 🍺🍺🍺🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Those Lincoln Engine welders are built like tanks and last forever.
That behr spray paint is freaking awesome stuff
It actually is. it has good hide ability, which is a must for light colors.
Looks so Nice now You could add a removable table on top to hold all your supplies Simple frame made from conduit with some bolts with wing nuts holding it
I like it! Great idea.
Your dog is impressive. Great video.
Lots of good nuggets of knowledge in this one. Thanks!
Hey Thanks.
I luv the tips!!! I’m a MiLF and I Love the show!!!
I love Milfs!
Jack’s Small Engine for air filter housing?
McMasters-Carr may have the generic motor mounts.
It’s a good machine to have around the shop.
All the best sir!

That cover look like OEM nicely done
Hey thanks
Thanksgiving s a hell of a find and a hell f a fix.
Hey thanks
Nice find
Looks as good as it runs, great!
Thanks!
Ginger 0:13 Thanks for the tip on the 30w and the ratchet extension.
She's always helping
Nice job overall. Some people have better luck with Briggs engines than I do as the only one I ever had was on a Husqvarna made Craftsman snow blower that wasn't disappointing, only the carburetor was one of those Nikki things, kind of a pain to work on. I have a 25 year old Vanguard V-Twin on a Cub Cadet Series 2000 that has been a thorn in my side for quite a while. More recently I had to get an air filter for it and thought a filter for a Kohler Command Pro would work since they were similar dimensions. It was too tall so I modified the mounting bracket to just accept it. Basically I just replaced the threaded stud on the bracket with a 1/4-20x1.5" carriage bolt, locking washer, nut, fender washer and wing nut and it made it so I didn't have to special order it.
Good tip on the scoring
Thanks
I see what you did there, making Ginger pump up your high lift pallet jack at :14 sec. Love those little video editing. But seriously another great video.
Had to buy Ginger a new bone, Best shop dog there is.
@@rong2578 You're awesome. Thanks.
She's a great sport.
Great Project..
I've watched this video probably 10 times, out of pure jealousy. Awesome little machine. But I've never caught the dog's legs pumping up the cart before lol. Very classy haha
Hey thanks
.047 uF is a really common size and it's usually marked as 473. Capacitors of this size to ground couple high frequency A/C noise and short it out.
Great job...
Your dog is something else! Funny!
Man I was waiting for this one!!! Nice!!
It was a fun project.
Great dog sir!
omg your dog is so cute so smart!
Thanks!
If there's slag, then you drag is how I remember.
I knew the moment I did it that I was wrong.
if there is slag it must drag ... good vid , thanks
I knew it was wrong the moment I did it. I had to leave it in the video though so I'll never forget.
Good work
Thanks
Enjoy your videos . You’re skill range is nice, keep it up🤙
Thanks 👍
Nice score, Moe.
Thanks
I also add mystery oil to my gas, with carburetor motors.
Awesome content!
Thanks Clint.
This guy, the renaissance man says in order for the foam to cut beautifully like butter you have to have a razor sharp knife and then he pauses just long enough to think and then to say: “which I always do” had me rolling lol
@20:00 Ginger's like "I sees no Cheezeburg!"
About 35 years ago I almost had an multi-fuel engine driven rolling AC/DC welder/generator for $100. I don't remember the make, but it was big and blue and rolling on four 8" pneumatic tires. An elderly gentleman was selling off his mechanics tools, of which I bought quite a few items, including a five foot long three and a half ton floor jack for $20. Then he rolled out this generator and said he wanted $100 for it. I said great, but now I have to go to my bank. When I got back with the cash, apparently his son had dropped by and told the old feller that he wanted it, and not to sell it. So missed out. Can't blame the son though, I would of done the same thing in his place. Super disappointing!
Looks great
Thanks!
Nice work. Ginger rulz!
Thanks
Just want to point out that the vanguard engines are made by dihatzu (Toyota) and that's why they are so good. I have this exact welder I wish I could find a manual just to see what hobart has to say about matinence and stuff
Thanks for your videos. I'm working on a Lincoln Weldanpower G3000. Same engine, different generator. It's not producing power. Any advice on where to get info to troubleshoot it? Thanks again.
Hi great content 👌and great doggie
Thanks Fred.
Good puppy
I have heard to drag if there is slag. Hope I'm right. Nice machine.
I knew I was wrong the moment I did it.
How do you get the stickers off and what adhesive do you use to put them back on?

I love your dog.
Thanks.
