- As soon as word broke that Hot Wheels had created a Premium Initial D AE86, the collector world went nuts. And what was a Japan-only mail-in promotional model skyrocketed in value to well over $400 on the secondary market.
This model, exclusive only to Japan, is one worth keeping in the package.
But since this is Lamley, I’m gonna open it and show you what the model looks like loose. And it’s awesome.

If you were ask me whether to open this or not, I’d tell you to keep it packaged. It is too rare and too cool to open. And because of that, I’ll open mine because that’s my job. Enjoy.

There’s a few things about this model that bother me, especially since it’s really overpriced now.
-wrong wheels
-only one interior seat
-the artwork shows the 86 from the early seasons but the model is clearly the Project D version.
-proportions are weird; back window is huge and way too close to the wheels, creating awkward proportions.
I hope there’ll be far better models down the line. The mainline cast from the show is represented by Hot Wheels at this point, save for outliers.
Seats were red and the hood was white in the early seasons 1 and 2. After the rebuild the good went cf and the racing seat got put in
Yeah hot wheels is like that but at least it looks better than the original AE86 hot wheels that looked awful

Best AE86 is the Tomica Premium but it misses the 2 front yellow fog lights. But it's way better than the HW.
Yep, the Real Rider Wheel is not accurate, should’ve be the 8 Spokes Real Rider Wheel just like in the show, not the 6 Spoke Real Rider Wheel.
Just my opinion, the AE86 from Tomica - Tomica Dream is more realistic & legit, they even have two version of it, one is Takumi AE86 from stage 1 (full stock no carbon hood) and the other one is after Takumi join Project D (with carbon hood), the doors can open too.
Once u had it u won't regret.
It takes a lot of balls opening up treasures like this. Big respect.
Love how hotwheels dipped its toes into initial d! I personally like the card art better than the casting. Too bad its so exclusive, otherwise i’d definitely pick it off the pegs in a heartbeat! I also think the wheels on the japan historics 3 skyline rs would’ve made better watanabes, just make them black instead.
I was kinda thinking the same thing (8-spokes), but the tires on those wheels are kinda fat they may not fit under the casting. A set of 8-spokes shrunk down to the size of the 4-spoke wheels would be perfection! 👌

That particular car WITHOUT the Watanabe styled wheels makes it NOT WORTH that type of money... any TRUE Initial D fan would agree!

I have the full initial D set from Jada Toys released back in 2004. It was actually the only die cast toys I collected til 2017. It included the 86, the fc, the fd, the sil80, and the Evo. Also, go watch in Hulu!
I was only able to get the BNR32 GT-R on 1/24 from Jada when they were new. Jada did a really good job on them
I have the FC and Evo myself that I cracked open as l did with all my diecast 10-15 years ago, crazy prices on a carded ones now, better detailed than most other 1:64 scale renderings of these, despite the scale inaccuracy.
As soon as that AE86 with the headlights popped up was released, I knew it was gonna be in Initial D livery at some point. I’m just surprised at how limited it is.
One of the 1st few Hot Wheels AE86s did like the initial D car.

Or you can just go and collect the Jada Toys 1:64 Initial D collection which had 6 cars released.

$400 for a 1:64 scale?! I’d spent that on a 1:18 scale AutoArt AE86 instead. I just wish that Hotwheels can make all InitialD cars as a set! That would be awesome!! They have the tooling for em so why not make em?
You should totally start cutting the blister instead of ripping it to preserve that cardwork I do that with all my premiums 😀

I'll never understand how a Hot wheels car can be so expensive.
Step 1) Take an existing 5$ premium model. Step 2) Slap branding on it. Step 3) Profit.

Tip for the future , put 94% alcohol on the back of the cardboard where the glue is and it will pop off . After that u can just glue it back together with paper glue .

I've cracked $40,000 hot wheels, albeit when i was a kid and they were only a quarter and now go for many thousands of $$$ and it doesn't feel any different than cracking a $1 car. the excitement of cracking cars as a child can not be duplicated. and i think that's what everybody that opens cars are trying to repeat.
they do have the 8 spoke wheels in a small size. they were used on the classic batmobile premium.
HW has yet to fail pissing me off with these releases. Parodies on this subject are hilarious.

Honestly this is probably the best limited exclusive. One had to get every rereleased Initial D manga volume and keep the coupons to redeem to get this.
As a fan of one of the best animes ever made; I hope this gets rereleased someday. Probably without the Fujiwara Tofu shop sign on the side.
There is ZERO reason why Hot Wheels can't release a pseudo Initial D set. The cars without the decals. We know what they are.
They’ve kinda done this in releases of the AE86 boulevard and the yellow Fd they released in mainline and that one premium series. They just wouldn’t release them in a series together without making it obvious it’s an initial D series

Just saying...for a special release like this, that's "worth $400+"...you shouldn’t just ripped off the card like that. You could have still keep it somewhat intact by cutting that cover portion only.
As an AE86 owner, $450 is a bit spicey for me but I do like me som HW and I am a fan of the Euro Beats. Way cool of a find.
The Tomica, is cheaper, have better proportion and its more detalhed. And have the Watanabes
You can get it for lesser amount if you have good connection! I purchased 3 of these and all around $230.

I would buy this, no matter the price. They could get the watannabe look if they got the rims they used on cars like the 959 dakar and the rs200.

Pretty sure Hot Wheels has had a Real Rider 8-spoke wheel design extremely reminicent of the Watanabes since at least 2011... They're on the Ford Rally Team Set, on both Escorts and the Supervan.
Toyota Corolla AE 86 Trueno and Mercedes Benz are my favorite cars are the best.

Darnit, i have all Initial D manga volumes released in english by tokyopop, many models from cars, would like to get this AE86 as well but 450$ for one HW. Nope, to expensive.

I never had tomcia cars with I was kid but I want to buy hot wheels I like that initial d AE86 . I like that cars❤❤❤
The way to get this was to get all the manga from Amazon Japan. There are 26 volumes at around $10 each. So if you lived in Japan it would have cost about $260, but you were getting the manga, so it was essentially a free give away. It was limited though. Currently Jada has the Initial D license in the US. I think they can fit the Watanabes in there if they used low profile tires. I need to test this, but I think it would work. I'm building my own and I did grind the wheel wells out for the thick tires.
you weren't actually guaranteed the hot wheels car if you bought all the manga, it actually was a lucky draw item,
"all the manga" means it's over 700 chapters worth of content.
and it just makes you eligible - not guaranteed - to obtain one.

even if it's not a 100% copy, the context makes the price worth it, in my opinion.

Get the Hobby Japan version, it has the water cup inside, an engine display and an acrylic box with the Tofu Shop background.

They do not anymore. I got the set. Poor condition, but I enjoyed em on my desk for a decade.

Mattel should have used the 8 spoke Panasport-style wheels that are on numerous premium castings, from the Real Riders 510 to the Forza Alfa GTV to the Fast & Furious Escort. Basically the exact same design as Watanabe RS-8's as available optionally on the AE86 in period in Japan, and as depicted in the anime, manga and even the live action movie. Oh well...
To some that black & white car might be "worth" that kind of money, but I wouldn't want it in my collection even for free 'cuz I have zero interest in such cars. Each to their own, right?

When it comes down to it though, the Jada Toys 1/64 scale is way more accurate. Wheels, correct paint for what it advertises, etc.
