Taimane Gardner, the Ukulele Virtuoso | Taimane Gardner | TEDxMaui

  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Captivating ukulele virtuoso Taimane Gardner shares two performances: one, a frenetic, dazzling medley of recognizable classical tunes, and the second, a haunting and powerful composition of her own entitled "Neptune Storm".
    Dazzling and innovative ukulele virtuoso and songwriter
    Taimane Gardner picked up her first ukulele at the age of five-and it was love at first strum.
    Demonstrating her impressive musical chops as a young street performer in Waikiki, Taimane (which means “diamond” in the Samoan language) was a diamond in the rough until Don Ho discovered her at the age of 13. The budding songstress soon became a featured performer with the legendary Hawaiian crooner, playing alongside him at venues in Las Vegas and Palm Springs. From there her popularity grew, and Taimane has since performed in many parts of the world, dazzling audiences far and wide with her cutting-edge style. Her performances have been described as elegant and energetic, while her stage presence is simultaneously overwhelming and captivating.
    In addition to playing her own distinctive versions of well-known pieces, Taimane also writes her own songs and adds fresh material to her sets.
    Known for her unique musical vision and innovative ukulele style, Taimane shows the versatility of an instrument that is often viewed as limited or simplistic. She has the ability to blend musical genres-from classical to classic rock to flamenco-without missing a beat.

    In 2009, my wife and I flew Taimane out to San Diego to have her perform at our wedding party. She played for a total of about 3 hours. Her entertainment made the party something for all invited to remember for the rest of their lives. We even received thank you cards for a wedding celebration - never heard of that! She is an amazing artist and was a protegé of Don Ho before he died. Go Taimane!

      @@DaRedeyeJedi808 I agree. He wouldn't be so renowned if just anyone could play like he does. I have seen him twice, including this past September. I have to admit it got kind of boring the second time around. If you think of it in terms of someone playing what he does on guitar, there are probably a lot of guitarists who can do Bohemian Rhapsody. He shared the stage with a friend, who played guitar and sang, was pretty average. I used to live in Hawaii, miss the local players of Hawaiian roots music. Still, Jake is great, and a really decent, sincere guy. By the way, the flamenco tune she is playing is Malagueña, sometimes known as Malagueña Salerosa. There is an interview on UA-cam with Keith Richards where he says the first song he learned was Malagueña, taught by his uncle. I used to play a cruder version of it, far down from the skill level of Taimane Gardner or Keith Richards, but still great fun. She would be great to see live.

    The idea worth sharing is that seemingly small things (the uke for example) can be used to the max and amazing things can come out of it. So often the notion that we need some great complex or expensive apparatus to achieve our goals... yet look what this person does with something seemingly so common and rudimentary.
    If not a virtuoso, than certainly expressing the virtuoso attitude.

    I'm intrigued at just how many classical / Flamenco guitar players moved over to Ukulele. The styles work well, but what drew me to a Ukulele in the first place was the "Virtuosity not necessary" element of it, and how simple it was to play. Once you play it like a guitar, you might as well play guitar. Important to keep it fun.

    okay. the visible scratch marks under the sound hole tells a story of grueling long hours of playing that probably came with a painful hand. and anyone who discounts that with just a "girl playing ukulele" or compares her to other great talents is just being a jerk. I respect all the great uke players we have today and we should learn from them instead of comparing them like fruits.

      Beenthere Donethat oh i know the difference of playing with steel strings. played guitar for 14 years before i fell in love with the uke. but even if it's nylon, practicing long hours would still result to sore fingers. some might be able to endure it better. but learners and beginners would atest to that.

      You can hear based on the string noise from her sliding up and down in positions that those are likely wound (steel) uke strings.

      I was just noticing that 3 strings were silver colored which might indicate your assumption is correct. I also noticed this instrument has 5 strings with the bass string being doubled. I am assuming this may be the same as how a 12 string is tuned with each pair of strings positioned to be fingered together.

      @junabeeevods 7 років тому +7

      sparkimoto You are correct, but I was just going to say that the "bass" string is actually the second down. The top string is actually higher than the second.

      I could be mistaken, but it sounds to me like she is using a low-G tuning rather than re-entrant tuning.

    It is really amazing, as written in the generic, to play the classic songs on a four string instrument. Sound is rich as much...
