In 2009, my wife and I flew Taimane out to San Diego to have her perform at our wedding party. She played for a total of about 3 hours. Her entertainment made the party something for all invited to remember for the rest of their lives. We even received thank you cards for a wedding celebration - never heard of that! She is an amazing artist and was a protegé of Don Ho before he died. Go Taimane!
Taimane uses five picks on her right hand. They are long, acrylic fingernails. She also plays a 5-string uke with two low G strings. Besides her virtuosity, she has an irreproducible, unique style. Go Taimane!
Taimane moving as a rock-star, singing as an angel, playing ukelele as a flamenco and/or shamisen artist, she is awesome and virtuoso ! thanks for sharing
I'm not sure what I just watched but it's amazing and out of this world. She is playing a instrument that probably had never been played at this level. She blew my mind. BRAVO!!! 👏👏
A goddess on my favourite instrument. Listening to Taimane dancing on her Ukuleles takes you away, out and into a world of beauty, excitement and dream.
Gawd. My new favourite. So dulcet, so forgiving, so necessary and timely. I've died and gone to heaven and it's beautiful. Thanks Taimane for letting me into your head!
I don't care if you call her a virtuoso or not. And why should she be in competition with James and Jake - they are great players. So is she. And perhaps that is enough. I am mesmerized by her playing and the energy she brings to the uke. Thanks for an inspiring, sensational performance!
As a musician I hate when people compare musicians, they all have their thing. People comparing can't even play themselves! Can one compare Coltrane to Charlie Parker? NO 2 different styles and both monsters.
My daughter went to school with Jake, Kaimuki High and we were walking through Kahala mall one day when Jake was like 15 years old and playing with a trio, I am a musician myself and told my daughter that I want to give a card to him as this kid is gonna make it he is a genius, My daughter said he is a teen why would he want to play with an old fart hehe,, Kids got to love em right? I should have given my card! Oh well! LOL!
Amazing... I've been playing guitar for longer than this lady has been alive and I'm nowhere near where she is. I love seeing people with an almost super human command of instruments like she has.
for those saying she isn't very good- i can play jake shimabukuro's arrangement of bohemian rhapsody but there's no way i could strum like her- she is very talented
@@DaRedeyeJedi808 I agree. He wouldn't be so renowned if just anyone could play like he does. I have seen him twice, including this past September. I have to admit it got kind of boring the second time around. If you think of it in terms of someone playing what he does on guitar, there are probably a lot of guitarists who can do Bohemian Rhapsody. He shared the stage with a friend, who played guitar and sang, was pretty average. I used to live in Hawaii, miss the local players of Hawaiian roots music. Still, Jake is great, and a really decent, sincere guy. By the way, the flamenco tune she is playing is Malagueña, sometimes known as Malagueña Salerosa. There is an interview on UA-cam with Keith Richards where he says the first song he learned was Malagueña, taught by his uncle. I used to play a cruder version of it, far down from the skill level of Taimane Gardner or Keith Richards, but still great fun. She would be great to see live.
The flamenco techniques go quite well with the ukulele.. never heard it played this way before. Interesting variety of styles. Well done , you definitely blew my mind and inspired me to have a go.
I think if you discount her movements on stage as showy or arrogant you're totally missing the point... it's part of her art. This is performance art, not just music or Uke playing. I think she's awesome. I've been blessed to do two shows with her (which she steals every time!) and this is just scratching the sufrace of what she can do.
You would be surprised how many people are good at playing and have it hidden inside of a room where they practise all day and don't share it. There are plenty of people much better than her that no one may not even know about it.
Such is the paradox of being a musician....... No matter how hard you work or how great you may become, there is always someone somewhere who can make you look like a rooky......
I bought a Uke a few years ago after seeing her on face book performing ! Total amazement . I got a Baritone Uke so I could play guitar stuff on it ! After 54 years of p;laying guitar I have a new fun outlook with the Uke . Love her playing !!!!!
You bring tears to my eyes - your playing is so joyful!! That talent is so beautiful to watch and inspiring .... I love every performance I can find of Taimane Gardner ..... love LoVE LOVE!! YOUR STYLE! Keep going .............................

She is great!!!! Ao expresive and strong, the instrument is part of her body..so please, keep up writeing and playing songs, this is wonderfull!
Oh my... She is so creative and different, as if she has connected her spirit with mother earth, she wears no shoes she's so cool she found herself deep within all the conformity
Definitely very different - UNIQUE and yes really good. Another way to use the ukelele. Well done Taimane. Sure beats wasting time dishing out crap comments.
Watching this video in Year 2024.. this person is amazing player and singer.. never heard of anybody this good with this instrument.. she played so effortlessly..
The idea worth sharing is that seemingly small things (the uke for example) can be used to the max and amazing things can come out of it. So often the notion that we need some great complex or expensive apparatus to achieve our goals... yet look what this person does with something seemingly so common and rudimentary. If not a virtuoso, than certainly expressing the virtuoso attitude. Go forth and be powerful Taimane!
Michael Erickson I thought the idea that she is presenting, albeit on a more subtle level is that if you practice, practice, practice, practice, you can discover great things in what might have appeared to be something ordinary,
This was mesmerizing! I felt like in the second song, my entire brain was Neptune and my skull was he nearest point of empty space laying just above the outer limits of Neptune's atmosphere and Taimane - was a swirling storm flowing through the atmosphere of my brain.
She is a well rounded performer and ukulele player. I have never heard anyone play like her before. She is absolutely wonderful! I am a senior female and love and always have loved classical music of all types. Although what she is demonstrating at this time is not in the classical genre I am familiar with, it is still wonderful what can be played on the ukulele. I will be tuning in to more music by the ukulele on other UA-cam videos by her as well as others. I am looking forward to being educated in the ukulele. Have a great day everyone.
I really enjoyed this. Keep up the good work. You are an inspiration to others. The people who are knocking your abilities probably don't have the same amount of talent in their pinky toe. Bravo.

I'm intrigued at just how many classical / Flamenco guitar players moved over to Ukulele. The styles work well, but what drew me to a Ukulele in the first place was the "Virtuosity not necessary" element of it, and how simple it was to play. Once you play it like a guitar, you might as well play guitar. Important to keep it fun.
Saw her on Tiny Desk and had to see more. I love the flamenco arrangements, harmonic minors on a Hawaiian instrument it is meant to be. Keep shredding!
okay. the visible scratch marks under the sound hole tells a story of grueling long hours of playing that probably came with a painful hand. and anyone who discounts that with just a "girl playing ukulele" or compares her to other great talents is just being a jerk. I respect all the great uke players we have today and we should learn from them instead of comparing them like fruits.
Beenthere Donethat oh i know the difference of playing with steel strings. played guitar for 14 years before i fell in love with the uke. but even if it's nylon, practicing long hours would still result to sore fingers. some might be able to endure it better. but learners and beginners would atest to that.
I was just noticing that 3 strings were silver colored which might indicate your assumption is correct. I also noticed this instrument has 5 strings with the bass string being doubled. I am assuming this may be the same as how a 12 string is tuned with each pair of strings positioned to be fingered together.
sparkimoto You are correct, but I was just going to say that the "bass" string is actually the second down. The top string is actually higher than the second.
