Rare Lighter Restoration from World War II

- Restoration of an EXTREMLY RARE lighter from World War II Battle of Bulge 1944. This was found near Bastogne and got a very special badge attached to it. This is the Holy Grail of war relics that I have restored. and yes I will make this relic VERY beautiful again.
ABOUT THE RARE LIGHTER
This is a very special war relic from the Battle of Bulge World War 2 in 1944-1945. I have bought it from a family who lives near Bastogne where the Battle of Bulge took place. I got this old lighter and many other cool relics with me home including a Medicine bag a helmet and the famous whiskey hip flask that I already have restored - See the video here: • EXTREMELY Rare Whisky ... .
You can still go certain places in Europe and do some very cool World War 1 and World War 2 founds with and without metal detecting gear. There were millions of tons of military garbage and rare items left behind to be found.
This item was found in the late 60’s early 70’s and brought to a barn where it has been contained together with a lot of other WW2 metal garbage, uniforms, helmets and other rusted materials. I was lucky to be able to buy a whole lot of relics from this family.
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I was very curious about the badge who was attached to the lighter so I started cleaning this. When brushed off there was wings with a big A and some snakes and a needle maybe as old as World War I but I am not 100% sure. I have been told now by some of my subscribers from the US that it’s a WWII US Army Officer Ambulance Corps Medical Department Collar Insignia badge.
I heated the lighter to remove the Ambulance Corps Medical badge which were soldered to the lighter and there after I removed all screws. They were hard to remove I had to use force and some flames to get things apart.
I sandblasted the lighter using a mix of glass beads and baking soda and after the sandblasting I grinded the lighter with 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit. I polished it blank and added all the small parts again. I equipped it with a new cap for the wick since the old one seems to be missing. I used my metal lathe and I used brass to match the material used on the rest of this war relic. I also added new wick, cotton and a new flint spring to ensure that it will lit.
The beautiful Ambulance Corps Medical badge was cleaned in vinegar and 40% alcohol before it was attached to the lighter again.
I hope that you enjoy this restoration video as much as I did. Please subscribe if you want to see more cool upcoming projects 🙂 And DON’T FORGET TO SEE my RARE Whisky Hip flask Restoration - • EXTREMELY Rare Whisky ... - This come from the same batch as this cigarette lighter.
Thanks for watching my channel. See you soon.
Best wishes and stay safe ❤ Martin

That "A with wings" means army medicals
Funny how they chose the wrong symbol for the medical Corp.
A wings Means Army "ambulance"
@@jeffreyphillips9303 actually it comes from Administration. MS was Medical Specialist, D dentist and so on. And i think the letters were black on gold.
@@tristanflynn4014 Its not the wrong symbol at all...
The insignia is Medical Administration Department est in 1907. Almost all Dr's and field medics carried this lighter.
Another amazing restoration. Thank you for sharing it with us, This caduceus was for a member of the US Army Medical Administrative Corps.
thanks for your comment I am glad you liked it :)
I spent about 20 minutes googling to find this information... 🤣 Then I googled your channel, found this vid to pass it on, only to miss the boat by a day. Oh well!
@@AwesomeRestorations It's an Ambulance Corps. Med Department pin.
@@MrCardcon2 The A means Administration.
My grandfather was in the 99th Infantry and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. This is incredible, thank you for sharing!
You're doing great. Restoring antiques is not only a hobby, but also a deepening into history. It's very interesting to watch your videos.
thanks a lot I am glad you like it :)
As usual you’ve completed an incredible restoration. You’ve brought M. Johnson back from the dead. We know and have said his name. He is being remembered by thousands of people all over the world. Thank you for your extreme care when working on these amazing pieces. Especially on Veterans Day here in the USA. Wouldn’t it be cool if you were to find the family of Mr. Johnson??
There must only be a few (hundred?) million of them 👍🏻
I’m not saying it wouldn’t be difficult as Johnson is the 2nd most common family name in the US (as mustard guy points out 👍).. per census data, 3500 or so of the 500k US troops involved in the battle of the bulge should be named Johnson.
I believe that’s the insignia of an officer in the ambulance corps, so if you take it at face value then there shouldn’t be too many M. Johnson’s to track down.
AR- great job on the restoration, it’s a beauty.
thanks a lot for your comments. I don't think it would be easy to find the original owner
I agree 100%. My deep respect to all Veterans. As I always say, no matter on which side we fought or what war it was.
@@AwesomeRestorations Perhaps, contacting the "Military Times" the newspaper of the US Armed Forces, they could seek out records with their journalist "authority" and track the family down. It might make for a good article.
Just a suggestion.
Very nice selection and sanding. I do like your taste in tools. Isn't "Kingfisher" an Indian beer?
I think we can all confirm that the war has tried a lot of suffering, but also a lot of what we no longer know. The video is a good example with many worth knowing e.g. how all this works and what effort it has cost. Warm greetings from Germany 🇩🇪

I watch you restore and it makes my mind race, where was it bought, who’s used it, how many times was it lost, what it’s seen, what it’s been through, how many times it was used, what it’s lit……. The list goes on and on. But all in all it’s a simple lighter. Is it an Airborne Corpsman or nurse? Simply beautiful!
Thanks for watching and for sharing your knowledge and experience I really appreciate it 😉 im having the same thoughts every time I restore a new object 👍
From 1974 and back the soldiers got mre 24 hour combat. Inside whas a package of 5 sigarettes. most likely they smoked these sigarettes. Also there raincoats where half tents made of canvas. And they used turpentine and beeswax to waterproof there canvas so they would've need a lighter to warm up this solution. And they needed too cook there meal and there coffee. Every soldier had matches but they wanted a lighter instead. They would've used wasbenzine or gas for there lighters back in those days. Hope this helps. Greetings,, Kitty.
the letter shows what function one had in the medical department , for example "D" for dentist, "S" for sanitary and "A" for Administrative
Martin, your attention to detail is so noticeable (the US soldier figure in the cupboard, the Airborne torch can etc), the care and almost a reverence you have for someone's memories is beautiful and so refreshing to see in the 'disposable' world 🌎 we find ourselves. I have often wondered how you get/find your items to restore. Do people send you things to restore for them? Do you search for things where you live? As always may friend, thank you for a wonderful restoration of this historic piece! ❤
Thanks so much I am glad you notice all the small details :) sometimes people ask if I am interested in receiving a certain thing. A few times I have accepted but otherwise I find my projects either on different shops or through contact persons or when travelling :)
@@AwesomeRestorations you know, after I'd posted 📫 my comment/question, I read your Description of your video. The caduceus is the staff carried by Hermes in Greek mythology and consequently by Hermes Trismegistus in Greco-Egyptian mythology. The same staff was also borne by heralds in general, for example by Iris, the messenger of Hera. It is a short staff entwined by two serpents, sometimes surmounted by wings
That is the staff of Hermes, called a Caduceus. The American Military chose that symbol for their medical wing, not really knowing what it actually represented. It's actually a symbol of thieves and gamblers, amongst other things.
The Rod of Asclepius is a single staff, with a single snake coiled around it. That is a true symbol of healing and medicine. It is used in most professional medicine areas as a symbol. The Caduceus is used mostly in private and corporate ones as it is a cool looking symbol.
@Mette B I hope your joking but incase your not, Army the A stands for Army 🤦♂️
@Mette B Ambulance
@@BeardDaddyGrimm No it doesn't , It stands for Ambulance, although it is an Army Pin
@@BeardDaddyGrimm N for Nurse, V for Veternary, D for Dentist, S for Sanitary. All are Army Pins
You,Sir,are a Master of your craft. It is satisfying to see old relics get new life and that lighter would be a lot more rugged than today's lighters.
Beautiful restoration as always! The attention to detail and care you put into this work is a perfect show of respect to the brave men who fought the tyranny of fascism.
Yes and when people actually knew what the definition of the word meant as well : ) Good old days.
Very cool. And respectful to those whom may have passed when Mr.Johnson lost his lighter.
All wars suck, we must remember them and learn to respect one another around the world as you do Martin.
Thank you!
thank you so much for your comment :)
My father was a postal investigator for the US Army during WWII, and spent most of the war in Europe. A German officer surrendered -- along with several of his enlisted men -- and Dad (who was a major) made sure they were treated respectfully until they could be sent to a POW camp. The officer gave him a chrome luger automatic (I think it belonged to a Nazi officer and had been traded to the army officer) in thanks for Dad's help.
I'm sure there was a lot more to the story; my father told us very little about his wartime experiences, but he cherished his souvenirs from the four years he served.
Thank you for the respect you gave the lighter and the soldier who carried it. As Mark Knopfler wrote in one of his greatest songs, we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms.
Как всегда наслаждение для глаз и для ушей. Спасибо!
thank you so much :)

It's a medical symbol. More specifically, it's a symbol for the American Medical Association. He may have been a doctor, nurse or something along that line, given the symbols on his lighter.

Every video is amazing! I love seeing these restorations. I did see the soldier face 👀 who else caught it? That soldier wink at the end scared me 😂🤦
thanks I am glad you liked the video :)
That turned out beautifully!! It’s amazing the quality of build back in the day, compared to all the cheaply made consumables these days! Excellent restoration 👍👏🙏
thanks a lot :)
Actually i think based on how consistent every item he restores looks it's dramatically more likely he's faking the rust etc using chemicals. It's convenient how many items that are HIGHLY corroded seem to have almost no corrosion damage once he cleans them, almost like he just dunks them in a solution for a week or two.
Fine detail does not survive 3mm of accumulated corrosion or the conditions required to get it there.
As always Martin, you do beautiful work! Turned out phenomenal!!
Thank you so much 😀
Dude! Your video production is fantastic. By far the best and most entertaining restorations on the internet. Well done. Looking forward to a full tour of the new shop. Cheers!

It will be strange because of the wrong emblem, the caduceus of Mercury was not a medical emblem, it is the rod of Aesculapius, the correct one.
Also known as the staff of Hermes.

The medical symbol with an A on the front is from the Medical Administrative Corps
The soldiers name was M Johnson so should be relatively simple to find out who he was

Thank you so much ;-)
I absolutely love the history ones; such a beautiful craftsman.
Edit1; The insignia is the Staff of Hermes(Mercury), or The Caduceus,
It has different meanings, depending how you go about it, but the symbol originated when Mercury tried to stop two serpents from fighting, the Staff was thrown and they intertwined.
The "A" is for Army and given the lighter, medic.

Outstanding work! World class restorations!

Very classy work, my friend, long live the hands, you are a fountain of creativity
To answer the question “do you know what this is?” - it’s a caduceus symbol which means the lighter was probably owned by a medic. I’m guessing the “A” is for Army
Edit: or A for Airborne
A is definitely Airborne. This is a WW1 tommy style trench lighter owned by a medic. Absolute beautiful piece of history .😍😍
@@Johnanzuoni Yes, in the other side of the lighter there is a red cross (tipycal in army medical division)
The A stands for Medical Administrative. I was given a few from a nurse that did service there and she told me what the A stood for. The A came in different enamel colours and meant different depending on the color, but I forgot that story.
The lighter seemed like lost in that condition. You made magic with it 👍❤️
Fantast
Did you learn about that symbol from Black Dynamite too? Lol
The A could be the company as in "Able" company.
Love the new man cave / creative studio / work shop. Enjoyed your restoration of lighter. M.Johnson would be proud and happy to use/own lighter again.
