In case you dont know, the tube on the side with the ball and hook is for a "rope lighter". a length of braided natural fibre rope is inserted through the tube, with the excess tied up in a knot below. the hook on the little ball is stuck through the rope partially down and the end is charred. When youre in a windy area or somewhere where a full flame might draw sniper fire, you would pull the rope up, and strike a spark onto the charred end to start it smoldering and light your cigarette or whatever else, then pull down on the rope when youre done, making the ball seal the top of the tube and thus smothering it. If you look for rope lighters, you could probably find the kind of rope meant to go in there and you could truly consider this a 100% restoration of the functions.
Fascinating little piece of information! I was wondering what the little side tube was for!
@@davesmith5656 If youve ever heard the old superstition "three (cigarettes) to a match is bad luck" its related to this lighter's popularity. the time for a match to be lit long enough for three people to light a cigarette off of was enough time for a good sniper to zero in on the light at night and take a shot. a rope lighter isnt nearly as bright since its an ember not a flame and thus rope lighters became popular amongst soldiers in ww1
@@TheRestorer ive collected and studied lighters and fire making technology for years, and actually have a few of those old rope lighters in my collection, most are simple tubes for rope with a flint on the side but a couple are ones added onto fuel burning lighters
My Grandpa had a lighter like that, but it was just round. Did not have the carvings on it. He said he got it in the military when he was about 18 or 19. My guess, that lighter is about 100 years old, plus or minus 5 or 10 year. Beautiful work. 10+.👍😎.
Absolutely right! I am 74 years old and I have one like that without the carving on it. Mine still in very good condition and like you mentioned, its about 75 to 100 years old. The restoration work is 10. Thank you.
My parents have one too. I saw one being sold in a war movie about some Berbers who enlisted to fight the Germans in France later in WWII. The lighter obviously was of German origine, also military use. The one my parents have, probably is a forgotten one by a soldier who had his quarters at my grandparent's during the occupation in 40-45...
what a beauty, well done.. You know whoever lost this lighter cried. Thank you for restoring❤
This guy DOES NOT RESTORE ANYTHING... HE TAKES A CLEAN ITEM AND COOKS SUGAR AND DIRT ONTO IT, HE DOESNT EVEN HAVE TO CLEAN IT BECAUSE HE JUST SHIWS WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE. EFOR HE COVERED IT IN FAKE RUST.. ALL HIS ITEMS ARE BRASS.. BRASS DOESNT RUST!
Beautiful lighter. Excellent work. And I love the touch of drama that you always add. A real touch of class.
Te doy un 10.
Es una restauración bellísima al igual que el encendedor.
Esta belleza debe exhibirse igual como hacen en los museos.
Bendiciones y paz.

A permanent or eternal match is a separate metal stick that comes out with the flame burning on it's end.

I love the drama, I give a 10...lost craftsmanship, onlyna few possess it...great video...
I'm really glad you kept original parts, some might not have. I thought you did a great job, so from me an 8. You'll only get better!
This video was really cool I hope there is more content to watch👍i think there is
By adding soda to the vinegar you just neutralized the acid which actually does the cleaning...
Te felicito por tu paciencia y dedicación,,,,,procura tener una caja de guantes,,,,
Reminds me of the old-timey fire extinguisher!
I wonder where you find all that stuff to restore. Amazing job.
Sometimes I buy at auctions, sometimes I buy from people, sometimes I find) Thanks for the comment!)
Great! You restored that beautiful lighter in a beautiful way.
A solid 10!

Nice job…I actually wouldn’t mind having one of those (antique lighter)…thanks
You may want to add an o-ring gasket to the bottom cap, as the fluid will seep out without it.
Other than that, great restore!
Magnifique ça me donne envie de fumer à nouveau !!
Le tue riprese video sono ipnotiche, non riesco a smettere di guardare. Sei molto bravo.
There are many things to criticize or critique but who wants to hear an keyboard warrior ramble on with their own version of "doing it right" when they haven't touched a tool in their life.
Great job my guy!!
A mola feita artesanalmente funcionou!
Truly amazing to see how much you can do with just a rotary tool. How do you prevent lighter fluid from leaking out from the bottom? The cap doesn't seem very air/water tight
8 for me. I thought it was a lovely job from a very damaged beginning to a working beautiful end. I too was wondering about a gasket of some sort to prevent fuel leaking, (having had one or two leaks in my pocket over the years 'I can testify to it's unpleasantness). Well done I look forward to watching more of your finds.
Isqueiros antigos do tempo do nossos avós!! Muito lindas essas peças antigas!!
