Does anyone really think Rick O'Connell would develop into a stern and disapproving father figure? I rewatched this movie about a week ago and it was honestly the first time I realized how similar it is to Indiana Jones. In that light, while Indiana Jones is a better movie overall, it feels like Evie and Rick are very much in conversation with Indy and Marion and make some definite improvements over their characters and chemistry. Adam Savage described Marion as a woman you can throw the gun to, but Evie is a character in her own right rather than someone who can become useful when the male lead chooses to acknowledge and tag them in. You were absolutely right about the two actors' chemistry being amazing - it's a huge selling point of the film to this day.
    Also, on a side note, huge props to whoever edited the original Mummy. It's pretty tightly cut together, without any bloat. There are a few moments I wish could be drawn out a little, but the movie has the core of what it needs and no extra to tell the story.

    The Mummy (1999) is a perfect blend of genres: it's got action, adventure, horror, romance, and comedy. Most importantly, it does all of them very well. I think very few movies (including Sommers' other projects) are able to shift between so many genres this successfully. It's an incredibly charming and entertaining film that is so rewatchable. I love the characters, humor, set pieces and story. Rick and Evie are so damn charismatic and their romance doesn't feel forced unlike a lot of other 90s flicks. Other characters are very memorable as well: Jonathan, Benji, Ardeth, Anck Su Namun, and of course Imhotep. Even the jokes and special effects still holds up well. While some of the CGI looks a little bit dated, the mummified Imhotep + his priests are still very menacing. It's one hell of a movie.

    Something I really loved about Mummy 2 is how the O'Connells feel like a real family. Rick and Evy actually act like they're married on top of being capable partners, and also clearly love their son who acts like a believable child (and Johnathan is also a believable uncle). The reason to stop Imhotep and the Scorpion King isn't to save the world, it's to get back their son; but Alex isn't just treated as a reason to get from A to B either, Rick and Evy are emotionally distraught at losing their son and never let the audience forget this and Alex isn't a passive kidnapee either.
    Which is why I really didn't like Mummy 3, they didn't feel like a family, just people who were stuck together and told to call each other family. And Alex was so insufferable, his parents went through so much to rescue him as a child, yet he acts like it was no big deal and that he can just dismiss his parents entirely because he's a big boy now.
    How is it that the child portrayal of Alex was less annoying and punchable than the adult version? That has to be worth some sort of prize.

    The craziest thing about the Tom Cruise Mummy movie is the broken trailer was soooooooo much better than the intended trailer and the scene in the actual movie. The lack of audio and only hearing his voice made it seem sureal and feel like we're seeing it from his perspective as everything is drowned out.

    A little aside as to how well the Mummy has withstood the test of time, I taught at a middle-school, where we were allowed to play movies for the kids on Fridays since they were half-days. These are gen z kids, they've grown up with Marvel and endless remakes and sequels. Because of the way the Mummy has basically fallen out of the mainstream, they'd never heard of it, and they absolutely had a blast.

I watched it like 3 months ago for the very first time like in 20 years and I enjoyed thoroughly, everything works so well and in an organic way, from the great performances of every single actor involved to the script and visual effects which I think look pretty good after more than 20 years. Leigh Whannell's 'The Invisible Man' worked because it truly get on with the times. It didn't just set on present day, but also touched topical themes. Cruise's 'The Mummy' just wanted to be another MCU knockoff.
    Sometimes, I fantasize on how I'd do the 'Dark Universe'. Instead of trying to ape the MCU, it'd be closer to the first two 'Conjuring' movies. Less modern day-set action blockbuster, and more of a period-set horror. It may not be topical, but surely would more of its own flair.

      That's a good way to do the mummy. Make him a Dorian Grey type character. Maybe have the guy that's trying to kill vampires go after him, but mummy turns out to be willing to go after others. Then you get your heroes/villians out of it.

    100% agree with the whole "each movie makes me appreciate the previous one more". Mummy 3 was a boring movie (Maria Bello is a good actress but has no chemistry on screen with Fraser), but "The Mummy" with Tom Cruise was honestly one of the worst big-budget movies I've seen in theaters. Just awful almost start to finish, especially the atrocious pacing - only decent part of it was Sofia Boutella, and she doesn't get much. There's a hilarious scene in a bar that's like a Simpsons joke - one of them is playing the skeptical one while the other one is the one trying to convince the other, and then they suddenly flip roles mid-conversation.

    I honestly feel the Mummy still kinda holds up, just like the Sentinels from The Matrix (also 1999, damn what a banger year), because the design is so iconic. The half-rotted effect is so unique that I'm convinced both The Dark Knight and Breaking Bad stole it from this movie. Nowadays the CG is so much better, but the design aspect seems to have taken a dive lately. Just look at Iron Man: they can now render every particle of his nano-suit, but it is nowhere near as cool or memorable as the overlapping plate design from the 2000's. CG will always age, but a good design is timeless.

    Really, the big opportunity missed with all those Mummy sequels IMO was specifically making them about going toe-to-toe with more mummies. They could've easily spun a whole horror action adventure franchise based around the O'Connells going up against other ancient, supernatural horrors. Just imagine Rick getting into some banter riddled gunfight with Dracula, or fending off some reinterpretation of the Wolfman. Instead all that energy went into projects like Van Helsing and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Such a missed opportunity to make a modernized, homegrown cinematic universe that would've actually attracted an audience

    • @ryangale3757
      @ryangale3757 2 роки тому

      Honestly, I'd say the opposite: I think the more they tried to branch out from the original concept, the less it made sense. Rick and especially Evie were perfectly suited to face down against Imhotep - they both knew the environment, he knew how to fight, she knew the mythology and the language, etc. Take them out of that element, and it just makes less and less sense, which the 3rd movie shows pretty well I think.

It's better than the old guys from the 80's and 90's who just won't give it up and just look a bit sad trying to stay as an action star. He's doing great voice work on Doom Patrol which has made people take notice of him again and gotten him some fantastic smaller roles where he doesn't have to do stunts any more, and it's great to see him. But I get depressed when I think about how Hollywood did Brendan SO dirty later on, as well him getting financially dicked in the ass after he and his wife divorced. I recently saw a UA-cam interview with Brendan and he's SUCH a sweetheart and I legitimately got teary-eyed when HE got brought to tears by the interviewer telling him that he may not realize it, but he has a MASSIVE fan base that is rooting so hard for him.
