Videos like this make me appreciate the effort and sheer creativity that went into blending 3D models and CGI. It was like a competition between studios to trial different methods and create the most realistic shot. I have nothing against the use of CGI today, but this is certainly a cool aspect of what was.
Man you have to get this guy back on the show again! I would love to see him explain so many of his other movies, his energy and personality match the show so so so much! Great content!
I'm gonna say it.....best guest you've had. All of them have been absolute treasures but alex has this balance of ease and enthusiasm that just makes him incredibly watchable. Get him back every so often whenever you can go through his portfolio!!!
90s VFX: Star Trek Deep Space 9 episode “Trials and Tribble-ations”, where the crew goes back in time and are pretty seamlessly inserted into an episode from the original series in 1967.
I think this was after the 90s but the van Helsing movie with Hugh Jackman blew my mind when I was young it definitely doesn't hold up now, but I remember I walked out of the theater and thought it was just the coolest thing ever. That would be a good example of how far the digital effects have come in such a short time
Dude, I freaking love The Mummy Returns! Mummy 3? Not so much, but even that one remembers to keep it lighthearted. For all its flaws, it's still very entertaining. Tom Cruise Mummy.. I forgot it existed until this comment
Wish this video was waaay longer too. Just love the comfort and chemistry they share from kinda having a colleagues dad on the show. And the way he tried to get reactions out of them too. And those drawings just pure art
Alex is the best guest I've seen on for awhile! What an incredible look at his beautiful art and contributions to one of my favorite movies ever. AMAZING episode guys, would love to see Alex again on the show!!
Some of the shots of the city transforming in dark city are so mindblowing - so many little details selling the illusion (and no doubt getting your eye to focus away from the jankier aspects). The art direction is so cool too! from the neo noir lighting, the retro architecture; the villains "flying" seems to be pretty standard wirework but their stillness is so intimidating and iconic!
Speaking of the 5th element, Adam Savage just put out a video on his channel today looking at a replica model of the Mondoshawan ship and it's pretty incredible.
I love the Mummy movie, even all of them.😅 Thanks for Alex to join you guys in. I have a few recommendations from 90's: Coneheads, The Borrowers, Inspector Gadget, Bicentennial Man and Sleepy Hollow (1999 - Johnny Depp's movie).
90’s Movies to React to: Dark City (arguably one of the most underrated movies of the past 30 years, with INCREDIBLE vfx), Fifth Element, Men in Black, and Star Trek: First Contact (the scene with the Borg queen and Picard)
I’d love to see a werewolf transformation supercut: Wolfen, Howling, Lon Chaney Jr’s original, etc. and of course the king of them all, An American Werewolf in London… Transformation can make or break a werewolf movie, I’d love to see the best and the worst!
What a great guest! Huge fan of the Mummy and even with fandom aside this was truly one of the best ever episodes from this channel!!! What inspires and enthralls me the most about film and especially this channel is getting to see the overview/intersection of all this crazy talent from different departments coming together to create something special. It’s all such incredible work to see!
When I saw Niko and Wren guessing how the miniature shot with the sphinx and building was made, I smiled so hard! One of Universal Studios Hollywood's shows actually brings up how they made that scene and even show (probably not the original) the sphinx miniature with the blue screen behind it. I always went to that show and knowing Wren and Niko were a bit stumped on that shot made me so excited XD.
You guys need to react to Godzilla throughout the years. So many different iterations and interpretations of the same character and concept. PS INCEPTION HALLWAY SCENE
Honestly, the fact that Wren loves Brandon Sanderson makes me so happy. I've been listening to Sandersons books, after having read many of them multiple times anyway. They're so good.
Wren has worn Stormlight shirts on the show so many times, he's clearly such a huge Sanderson fan. I'm just waiting for the day he busts out some insane Cosmere video like he did for Attack on Titan.

"The Mummy" is a classic of action comedy adventure movies. I love that so much
Even after 2 years this is still one of my favorite episodes. I hope you bring Alex back again. He is such an awesome guest
I'm legit speechless 😦 This has got to be one of the most insightful episodes so far!!
90s VFX: Star Trek Deep Space 9 episode “Trials and Tribble-ations”, where the crew goes back in time and are pretty seamlessly inserted into an episode from the original series in 1967.
oooh! that's a good one!
Yes please! What an episode!
In a similar vein: the various Borg Queen and Data scenes from First Contact.
100%, love that episode. still holds up now, did a rewatch of Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space 9 and Enterprise over lockdown
I wanna see that one so badly
I think this was after the 90s but the van Helsing movie with Hugh Jackman blew my mind when I was young it definitely doesn't hold up now, but I remember I walked out of the theater and thought it was just the coolest thing ever. That would be a good example of how far the digital effects have come in such a short time
I love that Alex Laurant brought the real art and pictures from the movie, awesome stuff.
The first Mummy movie was a true masterpiece. On the other hand, even the sequels are really great when compared to Tom Cruise's disastrous movie 😆
Dude, I freaking love The Mummy Returns! Mummy 3? Not so much, but even that one remembers to keep it lighthearted. For all its flaws, it's still very entertaining. Tom Cruise Mummy.. I forgot it existed until this comment
@Steven you are lucky to have forgotten about it, for some of us ,the unlucky ones , that things is seared to are minds like a child trauma.
The the first Mummy kills it. The second is pretty good also.
I've always LOVED The Mummy Returns! The fight sequences between Nefertiti and Anck-Su-Namun were 👏😘😍 lol
I think those 2 statements belong on the same hand.
Wish this video was waaay longer too.
Just love the comfort and chemistry they share from kinda having a colleagues dad on the show. And the way he tried to get reactions out of them too.
And those drawings just pure art
I hope they make more videos with him, it was very enjoyable!
Alex is the best guest I've seen on for awhile! What an incredible look at his beautiful art and contributions to one of my favorite movies ever. AMAZING episode guys, would love to see Alex again on the show!!
this one was one of my favorites. I love when you guys bring on people with a heavy hand in their respective projects. Thanks guys!
‘90s films I’d like CC to look into: The Fifth Element, City of Lost Children, Delicatessen , Dark City , Species
some of my favorite movies in that list
Some of the shots of the city transforming in dark city are so mindblowing - so many little details selling the illusion (and no doubt getting your eye to focus away from the jankier aspects). The art direction is so cool too! from the neo noir lighting, the retro architecture; the villains "flying" seems to be pretty standard wirework but their stillness is so intimidating and iconic!
Speaking of the 5th element, Adam Savage just put out a video on his channel today looking at a replica model of the Mondoshawan ship and it's pretty incredible.
Second that
Oh my gosh, City of Lost Children, yes! And Dark City.
Please have Alex on more. I feel like his personal connection to you guys makes him so much more willing to really share how things were done.
This was legit one of the most interesting guests you had in the show, Nick's dad is awesome!
Beat me to it on all counts
I was literally going to suggest Dark City, Fifth Element, and First Contact. Excellent suggestions!
Lol, I just posted Dark City as a suggestion as well, before I saw your comment. That movie is god tier.
Men in black yeah 🕴🕴🏾
Dark city is very underrated indeed. Visuals and storyline still holds up to this day.
Can’t recall ever seeing an episode with any reactions to small soldiers. Would be awesome to see you guys break down some effects from that movie
Halt who goes there
Greetings. I am Archer. Emissary of the Gorgonites.
Holy moly I just watched this movie for the first time in about 15 years just a few days ago. Do it!
Wren holding that drawing of the mummy looks like a little kid on Christmas after getting a light-up lightsaber
I rewatch the movie back after watching this episode. Really makes me appreciate the work done for this movie
I’d love to see a werewolf transformation supercut: Wolfen, Howling, Lon Chaney Jr’s original, etc. and of course the king of them all, An American Werewolf in London… Transformation can make or break a werewolf movie, I’d love to see the best and the worst!
I love the American werewolf in London. Also I think that they need to do the Fly movie with Jeff goldblum and the OG fly movie
Can't forget about Trick r' treat.
That’s an awesome idea!
Add Underworld to that list and we’re golden.
Awesome idea! Maybe release the video on the day of a full moon
The Mummy movie is fantaaaastic. My respect has gone further up after knowing all this. This guy is an amazing artist.
Brandon Sanderson is hands down the best author I've come across. These are the only sponsorships I watch
Wren has worn Stormlight shirts on the show so many times, he's clearly such a huge Sanderson fan. I'm just waiting for the day he busts out some insane Cosmere video like he did for Attack on Titan.
You mean to tell us Nick has been sitting on this hidden gem of a human that is his Dad all this time?? Alex is incredible, and he's worked with some of the best creators of the 90'/00's
Wow! One of my favorite episodes! The Mummy was one of my most beloved movies as a kid. Thank you guys for these insides and the concept arts. Wow! Just... Wow!
The skin beetles in the Mummy always scared me as a kid
YES! I don't know why, but those beetles (along with stage 1 Imhotep) gave me nightmares growing up! Still absolutely loved the film so much and easily Brendan Fraser's best work!
@@Survivor_of_DMVdrivers Totes gave nightmares too. Also, Diablo 2 wasn't too far behind this movie and fighting those Act 2 scarab beetles, oh man, would flashback to the Mummy beetles all the time!
I had nightmares about it for a month lol ! I'll never forget that movie
What an underrated movie, also this is the first I'm hearing of Nick's dad being in the industry, who also worked on the movie like what!? Is it wrong of me to want to have more of Alex on the show or maybe Adam Savage? Since ya know dude just casually dropped that bomb on us.
They should post a VFX Reacts every day, all while asking Adam Savage to join, until they convince him too.
Maybe not that much but maybe someday. It was cool just to get alrx and other industry pros on im hoping for some returning faces than anything
Underrated movie?🤔
Underrated? Where did you get that from? Literally no one underrates the mummy
I think it just needs to be said once more. RIP Grant Imahara
What a great guest. The mummy is my favorite movie of all times! Really enjoyed this, thx.
I had a giant grin for most of the episode. It was so awesome seeing the artwork(amazing btw), the technical hurdles they faced, the fact that Alex worked at ILM working with Adam, Grant, and Tory. I could literally watch this all day!
Thanks for your work Alex, The Mummy (1999) is a legit timeless classic on par with Raiders.
Didn’t expect to see Grant in this video, now I’m crying 😢 Wish he was still with us.
Same thing bro 😢
Has to be one of my top favorite VFX Artists React... You can here Alex Laurant love of his craft !
