    One bit about Jonathan's character: Given his age & class, he was probably a junior officer in WWI, with his drunkedness & attitude being a result of the horrors he saw then. Also accounts for his moments of bad-assedry, like when he grabbed Rick's pistols to fight the mummy priests, or his rifle marksmanship in the 2nd movie.

    • @Freakears
      @Freakears 9 місяців тому +44

      I've heard that a lot, and it makes perfect sense that he'd be a slightly shell-shocked veteran of WWI. Another point in favor of that is in his very first scene, he responds to "Have you no respect for the dead?" with "I'd rather like to join them." Soldiers that experienced that war had a very fatalistic outlook on life, informed by the unprecedented carnage they saw, which often included seeing a lot of good friends die.

  • @mycroft16
    @mycroft16 10 місяців тому +23

    This movie was kind of the Pirates of the Caribbean of its time. It came out of nowhere and was essentially perfect. Mixed some extremely dark moments with really great humor, etc. And it manages to be as good now as it was then. The VFX teams knew their limitations and so they didn't try to do things they couldn't do well so the effects hold up really well too.
    Brendan Fraser was everything back then. Literally. He was on top of Hollywood. He could sell all the action stuff, and yet he has extremely good comedic timing, great facial expressions, can act. And he was just a decent nice human. It's why when he made his comeback everyone was going nuts over it. It was so good to see him rising again. But everyone in this is just awesome. Rachel did the whole stereotypical dowdy librarian to whoa mama really well. Johnathan was great in his role as the still very knowledgable but not as much as her, and still great at action but not as good as him role. Benny is slimy as hell but also great comedic relief. Imohtep did a great job. It's just fun and the right amount of dark and scary. A perfect movie.

    There's a reason it feels scary compared to other films like it. Originally, The Mummy was supposed to be a violent horror film directed by Clive Barker that was "dark, sexual and filled with mysticism" before the studio stepped in and the director opted to move away from imitating the original. I do like that the movie still retains some horror elements to it though, it makes it stand out from other action adventure films.

      It is really unfortunate just how often Film Trailers can make or break a Film.
      All too often Trailers will depict an ‘action adventure” that in reality is a rom com, or depict a ‘spooky horror” that is actually a cerebral character study…
      Such Trailer Trickery has absolutely destroyed the potential of several Great films to be financial successes, and likewise has unfortunately made terrible or otherwise mundane films become far more financially successful than they rightly deserve.
      At best it is terrible trailer production, and at worse it’s false advertising…
      Audiences dinae like their expectations being so blatantly toyed with.

The actor also plays the engineer in Deep Rising, and is funny there too. Edit: The thing to know about the director Stephen Sommers is that he adores old-style pulp horror and cheesy monster movies from the 40's-50's. I saw this movie in theaters and it was a blast. Brendon & Rachel had great chemistry which was lovely to see, you get more into the story if you like the characters. Like you said it knows what kind of movie it is and doesn't take it's self too seriously but there are still genuinely creepy scary moments. It's just a well paced and well written great ride of a movie. I was super into archeology at the age I watched this so I did get a little annoyed when they used real peoples names like Imotep, Pharoah Seti I, and Ancksunamun ( Ankhesenamun) with no correlation to actual history lol But I got over it quickly and had fun.

      What? No...just...no.
      Brendan's comeback has centered on his acting capabilities, rather than any of the badassery, tomfoolery or sex appeal he had when this was made. And frankly, I'm glad, because he's a phenomenal actor. These kinds of movies ruined his physical health, and the treatment he got from producers and others ruined his mental health.
      The only way it would reasonably work is if the movie were about their son, and Brendan and Rachel were only supporting characters. They're just too old for this shit. Everyone is. Everyone needs to learn to let the fuck go and move the fuck on.
      And I say that as someone you enjoys Brendan Fraser both as an actor, and as a human being. But he's already been through this. And in his current condition, there's just no compelling and responsible way to do what it is you're asking for. And it's kind of an asshole thing to do to ask at all.
