  • You can't own a MK3 without being aware of the dreaded golden brown beast that is rust!
So, to stop my beloved MK3 from facing a rusty demise, I decided to take as much of it apart so I could to find all the rust currently present.
Join me on the hunt! 🤣

QOTW - Would you go this far to find rust on your own car?

    • @aaronj2067
      @aaronj2067 3 роки тому +2

I don't think I would go to this extent but as its a project car you're planning on keeping I 100% understand! I had a 106 Quiksilver that needed some rust replacing on the front wheel cavity leading through to the engine bay, we cut it out and patched it up. It wasn't pretty but got the job done

Have a Mk1 Audi TT that I’m building for a track car but I also want to keep it forever so I have taken it all apart to find any rust and fully re protect the underside. Because rust is a bastard!

This one isn't that bad, mine was way worse. You can check it on my page if you want, but prepare for the worst.. Some spots look as surface rust but as soon you'll bring the angle grinder with a brush you'll be suprised. Good luck treating the rust👌

Just got myself a little MK3 too. Mine definitely has rust! But watching you disassemble your car is very encouraging. Hopefully by following your example, I may be able to successfully tackle my rust issues. Thanks for the great video!

For rust problems, the best solution and the one that works best if you know how to do it is to cut the part damaged by rust and weld a piece of sheet metal of the same quality and thickness and then polish until the weld points are covered. Apart from this method you also prevent the rust from continuing to advance.

Ive basically just done this to my Nissan 200sx S14. Its a pain in the ass, but ive managed to find 14 rust holes. Ive welded 8 of them so far, only 6 more to go. One of them is the left sill (the same as you). Luckily im decent at welding etc, so im gonna fix it this upcoming week :)
Im really excited about getting the car fixed up for the summer ;)
Glad you did this to the golf, since its the best "reassurance" you can do for yourself and your car. Loving the progress! Keep it up!

Well, it seems like a was not far off with my estimation. I would do the new arches, front fenders, new sill covers and some tidy up patches on the floor pan and roof all at ones. I would tackle this all slowly in the spring/summer piece by piece yourself. It makes no sense to spend the 900 pounds on a body shop just for the sills. Save some money and buy a MIG welder, gas, wire, pliers, mask, gloves, angle grinder and practice, practice, practice. It's one of the most useful DIY skills you will ever learn as I said earlier. It's gonna pay back itself immediately and creates amazing content! Also, that way your can easily decide what your plans are with the cosmetics. Full (DIY) paint job, just a paint correction (fenders, sills, roof), complete plasti dip or wrap?

I’m most definitely looking into welding, I’ll have to do a lot of learning and I’ll be needing a lot of advice from everyone but I can give it a go 😂
There’s no point spending crazy amounts on the car to be fair!

Could not thank you enough! Im in a process of reassembling one Mk3 to put it back to road as well and the details in your video helped a lot. These are really, REALLY good cars made with common sense and some solid engineering, that cannot be said about later models.

Watching these videos with interest. My Mum's first car was a white 1992 K Reg VW Golf just like this. It was very rusty and the ECU/Computer died at 90'000 miles. Things kept falling off it much to the amusement of the local garage we used. Hopefully you can fix this car and keep it on the road.

Very interesting vid. Not many of these left and most base models have been scrapped since they are now at that age where they need rust repairs. I have a 1994 base model mk3 golf that is currently in for new inner/outer sills, floor pan and chassis legs. Expensive but I can’t let it die it’s properly under my skin

Yes, sills, floor and tailgate on mine. Arguably one of VW's worst cars, I seem to recall they were using some poor quality steel in this era. Mine was put out of its misery in a RTC. bought an '06 Focus - much better drive IMHO!
