    After lots of searching and browsing the internet, I have come to the conclusion that the best available option in the market for flat-footed people are the Asics Gel Kayano 25 and the GT series of shoes. They also provide standard, wide and extra wide versions.

    The suggestions to strengthen your flat feel/fallen arches should be approached with great caution! Before doing any of these, I would certainly ask my podiatrist or orthopedic doc! I actually pulled my right posterior tibial tendon doing an in place jog without any foot support! It's taken over a year to heal and I'm very cautious of NOT going without arch support, even when walking around the house. My podiatrist has told me never to walk barefooted or without support shoes/orthotics. Also, walking on uneven surfaces, like a rocky trail or even at the beach can be very hard on those of us with flat feet. I'm not saying that these ideas are bad for everyone with pronation issues, but having suffered all of my life with fallen arches, which has led to heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, PTTD flexor tendon transfer surgery and large toe joint surgery has made me quite aware of what to do and not to do. Don't EVER go away without your custom made orthoses! Forgetting mine has cost me a great deal of issues with pain!

      I hear ya!!!That does not mean we cannot do some exercises focused on strengthening our feet. Trying to get the right shoe is nice IF we find one but when I started doing some ankle and foot exercises my pain lessened. It is possible to "defeat the feet" problems. I want an easy fix, I'd prefer just to buy a shoe and "go"
      I myself found ONE shoe that offered support without feeling too stiff. La Sportiva Wildcat 2.0 gtx. They are still available I am on my fourth pair.

      Same here, I was born with flat feet and so was my mom. But I just wear arch support insoles that my physical therapist recommended to me and they work great. The brand is called Sole and I use the active medium met pad. You just put them in your shoe and they prevent your arch from flattening. And I also run in a stability shoe since flat feet is basically max level of overpronation. I need all the stability I can get 😂

    My lifestyle is Japanese. Meaning that wearing shoes outside and taking them off are my cultural adaptations I made for myself. But coming to this video made me think and reflect; I do have a flat foot, I tried many ways to strengthen my foot and legs. Like running with zero drop shoes, switching with motion control shoes for easy runs. I'm also trying to walking in different foot positions, willing to strengthen my own foot. This coronavirus lockdown, I am always trying to improving myself without being too intense for fitness. Living in the midtown district in NYC full of homeless people, drug dealers, and less businesses currently. Its hard for me to run to other places like Central Park to changing running surfaces. Not the cleanliness but people and authority. Running for me currently is challenging but also a flat footed problems.

    I like that your advice is to build foot and leg strength and improve posture, rather than layer more and more shoe over your feet as a fix. Personally my arches used to be much lower but after several years of running in vibram five fingers ( I started with Nike Frees) my arch actually rose significantly. I can only assume this has to do with ground feel, running gait adjustments that my body made over time when my shoe had little to no support. When I first got fitted for running shoes they said I needed a stability model, but again, after the more 'barefoot' running, stores told me I would do best in neutral shoes.

Would you recommend trying your drills and will this help the tendon? Thank you so much 😊

    I know this is an older video. But, it makes so much sense to me. I have worn extreme motion control leather shoes for over 20 years. I thought they were great because I could walk again after an injury. I have very flat feet also. So, I kept wearing them. Well this year they finally quit making them. Trying to find shoes has been a nightmare. I have purchased over 12 pairs and have had to send them back. I finally purchased a couple of Brooks neutral shoes. I started to think maybe I need something to strengthen my feet and not have so much control. Slowly, slowly, I am gaining some control of my feet with no pain. My feet also affect my back, so I was worried that I would have problems there too. But so far, going slowly, seems to be helping. So your video kind of affirmed what I have been thinking.

    Cool video... The more I learn about my feet, the more confused that I become. I have flat, wide feet and I am not really pigeon toed, but I am enough such that I walk on the outside of my feet and have been classified as a supinator/under pronator.
    Here is where it gets tricky... I ruptured both of my achilles a bazillion years ago so I know much of my leg stress is from that plus the extra weight.
    I have been walking/running in Asics Gel Nimbus for the last however many years and just found out recently that those shoes are classified as high arch. This has me wondering if their arch support system is preventing my feet from doing the natural arch roll/collapse... Hmmmm...
    This sucks as I finally thought I understood that I needed a neutral running shoe and now I am back at step 1... Sigh....
    I will do some more research . Thanks for sharing your experience.

    I was born with Flat feet but it was not identified until I was 14 years old. I was also obese at this time. Doctors suggested not to run nor to engage actively in any sort of sport, and prescribed arch support for the rest of my life. I've used them for about 4-5 years but lost hope that they would correct my arch, as any shock would have led to the pain in my left knee even with orthotics. However, in the recent times to control my weight I've started running outside/on treadmill as any normal person would do. As I've started shedding some pounds, noticed that I don't feel that weird pain anymore. Also, I think yoga stretches helped much in relaxing the tensed joints around exterior knee.

      some people, like me have had flat feet from pretty much the moment we could walk. That doesn't mean the above won't help, but it will not fix your flat feet entirely. Nor does it need to, you can run just fine with adequately trained leg and ankles that have proper training to support your feet. Like he said pronation is natural, but overpronation is what is known as flat feet. Any lessening of the overpronation will help and if all else fails you have trained your legs a bit more.

      More arch support the flatter your feet, but also don't rely on support too much. Train barefoot to strengthen the feet though, because constantly running with ample arch support can lead to other issues. If you don't have a lot of arch, your feet and legs aren't absorbing the impact of constantly hitting the ground very well. You need the right kind of shoe to enable your foot to impact safely, but you don't want to rely to heavily on that shoe because it can only do so much to help. 👍 buy and wear running shoes/casual shoes that match your arch

    • @saqicheeta

      He’s not the expert. For running we need a medial (inner side) shoe support. We need stability shoes. Different brands offer different shoes for it but all agree on medial arch support. I prefer ASICS

    Here on the gulf coast in the southeast usa. Cheap flip flops and bare feet most year has the majority of the population here with a wider flatter foot. P.s. I've worked at different running stores and seen statistics of shoes sold. In the north more neutral shoes are sold, in the south more stability. I take it as cool weather causes people to wear more supportive shoes longer through the year and the warm weather promotes bare feet and flat cheap flops. Support in shoes warn in the north helps the arch stay hight. Lack of wearing shoes in the south promotes a flat foot to distribute the weight and pressure points from the ground. Genetics is also part of it, I have seen this from fitting families.

      gary146472 same question!

    • @TheRunExperience
      @TheRunExperience  7 років тому +9

      gary146472 hi there! While ultimately the brand choice will be up to you, our main point here is that the shoe shouldn't be what carries you through any distance. Strong, sustainable run form and strong legs and hips will serve you well through many miles. I'd say for anything over an hour of running, find something with more cushioning but not so much so that you can't feel how your foot is striking. Find your best local running store to help you with the final pick!

      You better consult at a running store with a specialist. First: They can analyze your feet and the gait and second they can offer suitable shoes for you. Any major running shoe brand (Asics, Mizuno, Adidas, Nike, Saucony, New Balance) may be good. Reebok and others are not quality running shous. (Imho, reebok are very crap running shoes and I do not know about any local store that would recommend them). You won't find a specialized answer for youvon youtube. Visit a local running store.

      Try running barefoot or with barefoot sandals/shoes. Strengthen your arches with towel exercise/ standing on one leg and twisting. Strengthen your glutes, hamsrings and quads.

    Hey, Thanks for the info, very interesting. I have really bad flat feet. I go jogging quite a bit I wouldn't say long distance but maybe a 20 min jog as I am a beginner, I also go mountain walking quite a bit. Regardless of running or trekking I always get really bed lower leg aches, they have been so severe in the past they have woken me up during the night, its usually the lateral side of my shin that hurts the most. I recently bought flat flexible running shoes but I'm not sure if they are any good. I had a pair of Asics before them but they were really stiff and had a really thick sole and also made my run very uncomfortable. I fear running now because it just does more harm than good. Could you recommend a good pair of shoes that would provide support for my flat feet but also for my running. should they be lightweight or flexible at all ??

      Hey check this video out because it all starts with the runner, not the shoe. ua-cam.com/video/FYyIXX0h3i0/v-deo.html Also try rotating between a couple pairs of shoes for best results. Your local running store should have some good rec's!

    I feel like I have the flattest 5E feet ever but have been lucky that it hasn't kept me from running. On the screwing your feet technique, is that done while walking AND standing? Also, do we screw our feet out or in? I would think in.

    • @TheRunExperience
      @TheRunExperience  6 років тому

      When standing think of screwing them outward, starting rotation from the top of the hip.

    I have flat feet at 61 years old due to severe arthritis - even had to have my left ankle fused. Good shoes with arch support and motion control is essential to me still being able to run. In my case, the shoe has to provided most of the support. Sucks, but that's the way it is. What is the best shoe for me still being able to run?

    • @TheRunExperience

      Hard to recommend an exact type without seeing you run. You might check in with a local running store or even the folks at Running Warehouse. They really break down the shoes and tell you what will and won't work for you.

    With the raft of corrective and stability shoes, how do you get the right shoe for a runner who pronates. IE..Brooks Ravenna has good support, but so bows the Asics 2000, or the Saucony Guide, also there is the Brooks Adrenaline, with even more correctivity, or then Saucony Hurricane. Any suggestions other than trial and error, and costing America a fortune? All suggestions welcome. Thnk You.

      We totally understand how many options there are out there! Everyone is different - we suggest rotating through a couple different pairs (2-3) between runs so that you never get used to any one shoe. Your legs and feet should be focused on doing the work (making the right foot strike, helping to maintain strong posture, etc). The shoe shouldn't be taking all of the responsibility. Hope this helps!

    I started running about 3 years ago. All my life I have had very bad foot pain and very flat feet. The only way I was able to run 3 years ago was by wearing Vibram Toe Shoes. I have been wearing them since and I have 0 foot pain. The problem I have - aside from wearing goofy looking shoes is I hate running in the rain because my feet get soaking wet and I end up running in what feels like wet socks. I have tried so many different shoe type but the foot pain I had comes back.

    Guys flatfeet is not that bad in functionality , many top athletes sports men are FF just to give i example Shoeb akhtar fastest bowler in cricket till today was FF and i was fastest among my friends and i had some FF , i have read it helps to run faster then normal people bcz the contact on ground is more stable that pushes u , the only problem i always had is buying and wearing shoes for long , usualy my shoes will suffer more as they will go out of shape from bottom sole , will have more friction inwards , otherwise its not problem , actually FF are symptom of back instability and SI joint inominate imbalance that transfers below and makes ur leg short or twist knee which twists ur feet below , it can be fixed in most cases unless u have true short leg which is very very rare. go to Physio therapist

    • @TheRunExperience
      @TheRunExperience  6 років тому

      Hey Kyle! Good question. I might go to the root of the problem. Try including some single leg balance/strength work in your routine. This will highlight your weak spots and give you some opportunity for focus on those areas. Overpronation can be a direct result of weak adductors, for example.

    • @arquitetura.urbanismo
      @arquitetura.urbanismo 6 років тому

      Same thing, flat feet with overpronation. Anyone that really understands flat feet knows that overpronation is a consequence. I say really understands it, and don’t go out saying that we have flat feet because we didn’t allow our feet to strengthen.

    hey man I've got to the point where I can't run or go for a long walk at the mall without my feet aching. I have flat feet and I bought high arch soles for my work boots. That seemed to fix the problem. Am I doing more harm than good. Also was looking into ultra boost...want to start running again but I can't even walk for over a couple hrs with out my feet hurting or feel sore the next day; sore heel sore ball from side to side. Will ultra boost fox my problem at least to walk in all day?

      You should check out our beginner running program: therunexperience.com/training-plans/beginner-running It also sounds like you need to start including some mobility and stretch work in your daily routine. Feet need to be stretched and moved just as much as anything else. Unfortunately we can't always jump to a quick fix like shoe inserts, though those can work great in combination with other self-maintenance on the body.

    I was wondering if you recommend casual shoes or sneakers for everyday walking? Or could I wear running shoes? I hear running shoes aren't good for walking because they're more flexible. but then I think this was old information and here have changed over the time. running shoes have more comfort/cushion for ground pounding. I am thinking about looking into ultra boost, asic mens gel, and I'm hearing skeetchers memory foam are good.

      Hello dom ...i am from the Netherlands in europe ...i had the same foot pain because of my flaat feet when standing and walking too since 5 years ago. I would cry from the pain ....The specialist recommended to put my right foot in gips for 6 week in order to give some rest for my foot pain as wel as to easen the pain .... really that helped me 75 procent of the pain was gone yet I had to adjust my special shoe soles arch that special made for me to put in my own shoes by letting the arch some how higher and using a good shoes that give enough support to the feet arches. ..From my own experiences ASICS WALKING SHOES are better than asics running shoes ...I noticed that running shoes brings the pain back again to my foot .....plus asics walking shoes was always the best for me......hope i could share my true experience with you....
