As an employer who does NOT hire solely from a resume I agree with the 7 second assessment. I want to quickly see that the candidate pays attention to detail (consistent format, no grammatical errors). I am also looking for average length of employment. The BULK of the information used to make my hiring decisions come while reviewing emailed content (is the candidate personable, intelligent and well written), interacting with the candidate during the in person interview (are they on time, dressed for success, knowledgeable about my company and able to answer questions - well spoken).

It's an employers market. I've this format of a resume, but I'm 53 and I've been jobless for 1 1/2 months. I was terminated after 7 years with a fortune 500 company (HD) with top pay and several awards. D.O.L. gave me my unemployment that week because of the reason they put on the separation notice. I want a Job now, but my funds are very low. I was replaced by 2 1/2 part timers with no experience. How should I take all of my wisdom and knowledge and put it into a resume according to the job

What's the point of listing on job boards if employers primarily offer jobs through networking, as this seems highly inefficient for both parties.

I'm finishing up writing a cover letter and a resume for a position I'm applying for, I have a question. Since the cover letter is the letter that the employer sees before flipping the page to my resume, do I have to include my contact information on both the cover letter and the resume? Meaning at the top of my cover letter the contact, email and address is listed and then the exact same format and contact information is on the resume at the top as the cover letter as well? Should I only include my contact, email and address on the cover letter and not on the resume portion or do I need this same information on both documents? Seems redundant... :S

Here is my issue with "quantifying results and accomplishments", everyone does not have the experience in sales or management to have numbers. Plenty of sample resumes include that. That isn't good. However, being the creative person that I am, I may do a blog strictly for those of us who have no experience in sales and management.

Hello ChasSanders, As I read your expressed opinion regarding writing/reading resumes and cover letters, I'm left to wonder what sort of job(s) you have or have had where numbers achieved can not or are very difficult to translate into accomplishments? In other words...Wouldn't you agree that in every interaction with the public one generates a margin (something won or lost)? Now the public is not always who exchanges money for services with another - for it could be a customer is one's boss, could it not?

We I.T. folks often face a similar problem. We have to be creative about how we turn our projects into positive ROI for the company, and I think we have to start the process for a given project BEFORE work on the project starts. Get ahold of the presentation that was used to convince the business stakeholder that the project would improve their bottom line. That will tell you what THEY are looking for in the results - what their priorities are. Ask the stakeholder's direct reports what it costs them to get those results currently - or if they can get them at all. Make sure to draw a concrete line between your tasks and their priorities (as many as apply) every time you communicate to anyone about the project, to reinforce those correlations in the listener's mindset - and in your own. After a while it becomes second nature.

Now most all the job applications are performed thru the computer. There is no personal contact anymore. 80% more or less of a persons attitude is physical. Eye contact, the way a person shakes your hand, and so forth. That's how I could always get a job in less than 3 days after being laid off from two other jobs or searching for a better one. Now that everything you now see a person thru is numbers or letters or who you know. That is how an app. is usually pulled out of thousands of apps.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 *📝 Resumes and cover letters are marketing documents, and employers typically spend only about 7 seconds skimming them.*
00:41 *💼 When deciding whether to prioritize education or experience on your resume, consider which is more marketable.*
01:08 *💡 Use accomplishment statements on your resume, starting with strong action verbs, emphasizing your impact, and quantifying your achievements.*
01:51 *📄 Cover letters should be one-page, highly customized, and answer why you're the right fit for the specific position and organization.*
02:19 *🌐 Networking is the top job search strategy; don't rely solely on reactive job applications. Networking helps establish connections and increases your chances of being noticed by employers.*

Employers that don't recognize outside the box thinking in a resume may be running a failing business. What this means to me is that it maybe wise to think outside the box when writing a resume.

Keywords are important .. include as many keywords as possible relevant to your background and position you are seeking.
Think about this - what keywords is the recruiter likely to search for if they are staffing for your intended position? Then put those keywords or combination of keywords into your resume, preferably at the top. ... . .
