A friend of mine is really pushing me to do this to my 840ci. I’m torn as I find the Auto a little indecisive sometimes and would love a manual. But on the other hand I feel that I ought to be keeping the car to original spec!
Good job on the swap! My 8 took me 2 weeks to finish. But 6 months of slowly collecting the necessary parts. What made it so long for me was the prop shaft as well, had to get mine lengthened. I did run a 3.64 rear end, but it was not enjoyable. So I swapped it with a 3.15 lsd out of an e32, and it is perfect in my opinion.
@fila estrada 6" for the front shaft. If you are thinking of doing this, it's best to measure the length needed after installing the manual transmission in the car.
From memory, 4.0 flywheels have T60 Torx and 3.0 V8 are T55. What I do know is, they can be an absolute bastard to get out when removing a flywheel. Before I bought my 840Ci 22 years ago, I drove a 4.0 manual and didn't like it at all. The Steptronic ZF 5HP seemed to suit the old tank better :-) Yes, there is a special 'waisted' socket you can buy from BMW.
@@The777Garage Actually, have a question for you guys. I'm currently looking around for an 850i/Ci project. I've come across a vehicle without a transmission. Is anything required from the original transmission to do a 6 speed manual swap or can the manual trans (such as the Getrag that is used in these applications) bolt in without the use of something like the bellhousing from the 850i's original, automatic trans? Also curious, why is the swap to an E32 diff required? Looking forward to your response, thanks!
Great work Ed, you and your mate made that look easy and I bet it wasn't. Speaking of manual e31s have a look at the one the Old Colonel is selling 💵💵💵💵
If you ever move to the US, I have a left hand drive california 840ci for you to do a manual swap. If you were somewhere in the US, I’d ship it out to you.
Excellent job I really enjoyed watching this video, I just have one question did you use M5 E39 flywheel and clutch?? Or just an 540i manual flywheel and clutch?
@@The777Garage thanks for the reply, maybe the clutch are the same, but when I checked the flywheel it shows only M5 E39 and Z8, I am trying to do the same swap on my 840, I got the gearbox from M5 E39 but not sure which flywheel should I purchase M5 or 540i
Hi Ed not sure how to contact but I’d like to have this done On a late 840ci ‘1999 model. Do you still carry out this work, what parts would you need exactly/ do you have them available and how much do you charge (estimated) to convert a functioning auto box to manual? Great videos by the way. I like that 750il you were restoring too. What happened to that? Thanks very much
did this job on my steptronic 5hp30, recently, and the prop was 150mm extended. my e31 pedal box didn't have the small damper mount behind the clutch pedal blank area, so I changed out the whole pedal box, and it was a complete nightmare! took all day just changing that out! I mounted the e39 remote master cylinder next to the strut tower. to keep it short. I currently still have the inhibitor switch connected, in neutral position, strapped underneath the car. I want this 'built out', and the trans fail safe error removed.... did you do any coding to make it think its a manual?? car is a true GT drivers' car now... love the drive. great vid! p.s. that car has some serious exhaust drone!
Hi! Yeah exhaust quite loud.. Transmission failsafe message still there..not sure how to get rid of it??! Ive tried mapped ecu from my e36 V8 as same engine..only thing i felt higher rpm and thats it ..otherwise behaved same as stock ecu
@@The777Garage as said I’m on later ecu, so still researching. Hope to find solution. There’s a how to on bimmerforums, for the early models and you just ground a brown wire in the tunnel area, and it’s fixed. Looks like that exhaust is missing it’s cats too! Whenever I buy parts from the BMW dealer the parts guys don’t really know what’s needed. I have to give them a shopping list of parts with the numbers. Can’t imagine the dealership coming up with the list of parts needed for a manual conversion.
@@The777Garage I have the opportunity to buy that trans to do a manual swap. I’m just curious if you know if it would be a good fit or not. It’s similar to the getrag 420g
400 for the prop sounds reasonable against getting a second hand one and then getting it machined to fit. Great job!
Well Done Eddie!! Top Job as always!! I knew you were the man for the job!!

Hey any advice on what parts to get and where from if I want to do a manual swap on my 1991 bmw 850i v12
Does the e39 6spd trans work if so what clutch and center support and I going to have to order?
I just finished my 840ci M62 auto-to-manual conversion. What recoding did you guys have to do with the DME to prevent transmission error codes?
Great vid - which gear shifter part was modified ?
None..all selector bits were from dealer
Would this swap be virtually the same for the 850ci?
