  • In this video I am using casting plaster of paris, but you can also use builder's plaster either.
    **PLEASE NOTE YOU WILL NEED TO WEAR A PARTICULATE RESPIRATOR AND WORK IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA. DO NOT MIX CONTAINERS OR SURFACES USED FOR FOOD. DO NOT DRY SWEEP FLOORS/SURFACES. ALWAYS WET CLEAN. DO NOT POUR PLASTER DOWN DRAIN-ALLOW PLASTER RESIDUE TO SETTLE IN A BUCKET OF WATER AND DRAIN OFF WATER**
    This video is made for my glass students at UCA but is open to all to take technical direction and inspiration from. This is another making method you can do at home during lock down. The video shows the glass blowing mould making process. This is a process I learned whilst on an internship in Estonia. If looked after correctly these plaster, toilet paper pulp and saw dust moulds can last to 30 + units. If you are interested in the glass blowing process, or the glass design process then this video is great to go through to get an idea of how digitally designed and 3D printed forms can be realised in glass by the blow mould process. If you have any questions or feedback please leave them in the comments below.

      Thanks for your lovely comment! I haven’t actually ever tried my moulds with boro, but I guess I should! If I do, I shall feed the info back here 😁

    This is so cool to see! thank you for sharing. I am used to making plaster moulds for ceramic work but am so curious about glass... would love to get a chance to have a glass blower make something from my own mould

      Hey Mary! Thanks for your comment! Plaster moulds are great for mould blowing. You should reach out to your nesarest glass studio and see would they blow into a mould for you perhaps! Best of luck :)

    Thank you for such a good video. What is the mould release you use when blowing the glass into the mould? You mentioned graphite spray. Is there a brand that you recommend?

      Hi Guy! I use Graphit 33, which is German I think. I'm based in the UK and order it through an electrical parts company. Be careful not to get graphite lacquer. Alternative resists are cola or sugar water, or skimmed milk brushed onto the mould surface. Once it burns and turns to carbon it acts as a resist! Hope this helps!

    I just started researching & this is very helpful thank you so much it’s been a challenge to find someone making glass blow mold. Would you use a recipe of 1/3 water, plaster and silica flour? This is the only one I’ve seen where you don’t use silica flour

    • @lauraquinndesign4706

      Hello! thanks for the question! I have used the recipe you describe with silica, but I find that these moulds are more prone to cracking. Of course silica, or quartz is necessary for glass moulds going in the kiln, but it isn't for blow moulds, so personally I avoid using it for health reasons also! Hope that helps!

      I’ve been running into that. I’ve heated them up and they all crack, I have mold that need a lot of detail. Is it necessary to heat them up to get it or can I still capture the detail if the mold is room temp?

    • @lauraquinndesign4706
      @lauraquinndesign4706  3 місяці тому

      @@90snebula Ah! I go into all my moulds at room temperature with this recipe. There are such things as hot blow moulds but the glass stays in them, gets knocked off at the jackline and then the whole thing goes into the kiln to anneal, but those moulds are usually 1 part moulds and are one used only.

      Hello! Thanks for your question. Do you mean the mould mix? It is plaster. I used regular builders plaster here during lock down when I couldn’t get a hold of fine casting plaster.

    Hi! Great video, truly informative and complete! The last part u mentioned that u need to coat the molds with something that glass doesn't adhere to, you said graphite spray or what?

      Hey! Thanks so much for the kind words. I coat mine in Graphite spray yes 😁 Graphit 33 is the brand I use but I’m sure you can find an equivalent where you live. Best of luck 👍🏻
