A beautiful lens that I have had in my bag for over 3 years and it has earned its keep. I frequently shoot a lot of action, airshows, rodeos and other events where this hunk of glass sings. Definitely worth the $1700 that I dropped on it. Often for a few extra mm’s, I will slap on a 1x4 or, yep, even a 2x tele-converter, with decent, useable results. That said I would like something with a longer reach and have been toying around with the idea of picking up the 100-400mm, but I am not a huge fan of telescoping lenses, still if I can snag a good deal, I might just pull the trigger. Bottom line, if you’re shooting action with Fuji, the 50-140 is a must.

Hi and thanks for the comment. I have used that lens a few times for some nature and wildlife work, but noting professional. I did enjoy it, but the question for me would be if it’s fast enough. In ideal conditions, yes. Anything less than that I would be as confident.

@@wondersandwilderness I have both. 100-400 is heavier and it struggles with light..better the 50-140 with 1.4 Tc it goes to 200 mm APS

As a TOTAL amateur with no intention of doing anything professional I doubt this lens is for me (although I would LOVE to own it) but this was a very interesting and informative video John. Thanks.

Thank you so much for the comment. I totally understand your perspective and agree 100%. It’s a great lens and a useful one for many situations but by no means is it essential.

First of your videos I’ve seen. I’m not a pro but have shot portrait and engagement sessions as well as multiple events. I am selling my beautiful 90 f/2 and 16-55 to get this lens for the reason you mentioned: it’s easier to use short primes and longer zooms. Great video! Subscribed.

Hi Brown, and thank you for the comment and for subscribing! I have definitely found that to be true over the course of my career, for sure. Those are two great lenses you're letting go of, but you're going to love the 50-140!

Great review John. I have the 55mm - 200mm, being only an amateur, however the better I get with my Xpro-1 the 50mm - 140mm is looking like the next upgrade. The option of the tele-converter is a big plus.

Hi Sean and thank you for the comment. You're right, it's all part of our growth in photography. The better we get with our skills, knowledge and confidence, the more we feel we can expand the possibilities. We start seeing images in our mind, and we learn what tools would make that vision easier to bring to life in a photograph. The 55-200 is a fabulous lens and very capable, but you're right, what we can do with a faster lens, the 50-140 in this case, opens up even more possibilities! You make a great point here for photographers of every skill level.

The 50-140 is by far my favorite lens - BUT in situations where I know there will be plenty of light AND I will be shooting for maybe hours, I take my 55-200 instead (which I've been known to use a small piece of masking tape on to lock in the wifty aperture ring). I shoot a lot of indoor performances from the back, and the 50-150 is so consistently sharp wide open.

Hi James. Thank you for the comment. Great idea regarding the 55-200. And you’re right, the 50-140 is super sharp wide open! I’ve noticed that as well.

Thanks John, but you forgot to rave about the OIS. Oh yeah, that was another channel. Actually one reason I'm a fan of your channel is you don't rave too much ; )

If the video title is about a lens, why is the video about a talking head?
