Matthew Kelly of Kingfish/ Rat Dog and session work with the Grateful Dead opens up and talks story with our host Dave D at Talking Heads Pod Cast Studios Pattaya,Thailand.
Matthew Kelly began his musical career in the late 1960s, playing harmonica with some well-known blues artists, including Mel Brown, Champion Jack Dupree, Johnny Lee Hooker, and T-Bone Walker.
During this period, Kelly was also involved in the burgeoning rock music scene in the San Francisco Bay Area. He played electric guitar and harmonica in several different psychedelic rock bands, along with fellow South Bay musicians Dave Torbert and Chris Herold.
Subsequently, Kelly lived in England for a number of months, and was a member of the rock band Gospel Oak. Upon his return to California, he renewed his association with Dave Torbert, who was then playing bass in the New Riders of the Purple Sage. Kelly would also sometimes hang out with a boyhood friend of his, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. During this period Kelly occasionally performed as a guest musician with the New Riders or the Dead. He appeared on one track of the 1973 Dead album Wake of the Flood.
In 1973, Torbert left the New Riders of the Purple Sage, and he and Kelly formed the band Kingfish, along with Chris Herold, Robbie Hoddinott, and Mick Ward. In 1974, the Grateful Dead went on hiatus, and Weir became a full-time member of Kingfish, recording and performing with the band extensively. In 1976, the Dead started touring again, and Weir left Kingfish. Kingfish continued playing many live dates, occasionally with Weir in the lineup, and released several more albums. In 1978, Kelly played on a few tracks of the Grateful Dead album Shakedown Street. He also played on several songs at the December 31, 1978 Dead show that was later released on CD and DVD as The Closing of Winterland.
Kingfish disbanded, for a time, in 1980. In 1981, Kelly became one of the original members of Bob Weir's band Bobby and the Midnites, and appeared on the band's self-titled first album, along with Brent Mydland, Billy Cobham, Alphonso Johnson, and Bobby Cochran. In 1983, Dave Torbert died. The following year, Matt Kelly reformed Kingfish. From that time on, Kelly led a gradually evolving lineup of musicians, as Kingfish intermittently toured and released live albums. In 1987, Kelly also released a solo album, A Wing and a Prayer.
In 1995, Bob Weir formed a new band, Ratdog. Kelly was an original member of that band, along with Rob Wasserman and Jay Lane. Kelly played guitar and harmonica in Ratdog until 1998.
The intermittent existence of Kingfish, led by Matthew Kelly, continues to the present time. In 1999, the band released a studio album, Sundown on the Forest. They have also released a number of live albums of older material.

Jerry Garcia was a beautiful soul I met him when they played in my home town in the 1990s. He’d sit at the bar where I worked for hours after their concerts and hold court.

So many of us have or had many many problems of all different issues. That's why I believe we gravitated to the GRATEFUL DEAD. I just want to remember Jerry and the boys for all the grate fuckin times the good people I met along the way and let Jerry finally rest in peace.
    Peace to all.😎✌🤪💨💨💨🌈🐻

Really fond of that little harmonica interlude by Matt in the jam on Weather Report Suite on Wake Of The Flood. Of course, the Garcia guitar solo is just transcendental.

To infer that "we didn't know the real Jerry" or that he had some malignant inner life is to not understand addiction. Drug addiction didn't make Jerry a "bad man". He was a rich addict and rich addicts have the best dope and never run out. Ask Keith. It's the junkie lifestyle that kills you, the war on drugs.

jerry liked his own band and grisman better...he would have kept doing those...

Class act Matt Kelly. Honestly I often wondered how did Jerry get his stuff going from town to town, did he have permanent hook ups in each town or did they have to hunt whatever he wanted down. So Matt saying this about his Doctor girlfriend hooking Jerry up all the time makes sense. You would think someone like Jerry would have no problems getting what he wanted when he wanted it. I’ll speak for myself but if I was a popular world renowned artist and was wanting or doing or just plain hooked on drugs the option of having someone like a doctor constantly taking care of my needs in that area would be the way to go. I have been through substance abuse so I get it. Imagine the pure clean medical grade stuff he got, wow! I bet when she would walk into the dressing room jerry would be like oh hell yeah it’s going to be a great night, at least on some occasions, i remember that feeling myself. BUT, then there’s tomorrow or the next day, all out. Or I wonder in his case did she get enough to last a long time? Iam fascinated by all this, idk why but it’s just interesting to me how he and Brent would get taken care of, or any “rockstar” for that matter I guess it’s a life I just don’t know anything about. Iam sure it was good bad and ugly though. Is there any way we could get the whole interview?

Jerry knew every single day, what they were doing,
They knew they were fighting slavery,
But it is very hard to set a slave free, and not have that slave that is now free mistake you that he perceives as setting him free, as a messiah

Jerry died from diabetes. I wish the truth was told, the coke and heroin were simptoms of the diabetic issue, his horrible eating, non-stop cigarette smoking is also what contributed, however, not correctly staying on top of being a diabetic is the real reason Jerome John died early is from not correctly addressing the diabetes. I wish everyone would realize and tell the truth. He was a diabetic. He died because of it, not the drugs.
